President’s Message

Garson Rice Club President

Young Donnie Ross, Take that Pizza Outside… If it’s true that we vote with our pocketbooks, then the new Donald Ross Terrace has been a landslide hit with our membership. For example, total Club Food and Beverage sales this past Memorial Day Weekend doubled compared to last year, with the majority of the increase coming from the Donald Ross Terrace – love that wood-fire, oven-baked pizza, y’all! Look for added offerings from the bar as well as new menus for our outdoor kitchen going forward. Speaking of bar offerings, I have found the tap water at the Donald Ross Terrace so disagreeable that I’ve actually had to add large amounts of whiskey just to make it palatable. However, you’ll all be proud to know that through great effort and perseverance, I’m starting to become used to it.

Yell Fore, Score a Six, Jot Down a Five… This was the first year I have ever participated in the Men’s Golf Member Guest and it was terrific. Many thanks to Cabell Poindexter and his committee for a job well done. I’m hard pressed to choose what I liked the best, the fresh “on-course” fried fish sandwiches served under the old oak tree or my blazing third-place finish in my flight. So of the three teams in my flight, I got to both reconnect with some old member buddies and best of all, make some new ones. They all seemed to really enjoy playing and even placing a few friendly bets with me. This is in spite of their obvious hearing issues as they kept calling me “Mark” - even after I reminded them of my name. Anyway, word of my newly found golf prowess must be getting around. Just this week I saw my old pal Flip Ray outside the Golf Shop. “I’ve got the afternoon off, Flip,” I said. “So I can join your group and play if there’s room.” “No thanks, man,” says Flip, “We’ve already got three!”

Hope to see you all soon… ‘round the Club.

Viva Las Vegas and Be Our Guest… This year’s Ladies Golf Member Guest was in a word… a “hoot.” The ladies said that the Las Vegas theme was a big hit with the surprise drop-in visit and photo session by Hugh Jackman and John Stamos only serving to heat things up. (Kudos to Event Chair Kris Flynt and Mary Thomas, Farm Head Golf Professional for hooking that up for our gals.) Ladies, mark your calendar for next year, you won’t want to miss it! Speaking of big hits, the Club has received calls from the Golf Channel, ESPN (Top Ten) and Animal Planet after hearing about Dot Powell’s 175 yard approach shot to the center of the 8th green. ‘Nuff said.

Garson Rice President

Thank You! Thank you members, swimmers, coaches, volunteers and staff for making this year's Swim for Cancer efforts a great success!

Membership Message from the Membership Committee Chairman

In recent months, your Club has taken several steps to support long-term growth. For example, we have put an increased focus on bringing younger members in their 20s and 30s into the Club, particularly single professionals who are just starting out in their careers. The Membership Committee is working with a wide range of young professional organizations in Greensboro to help identify prospective members and create events to expose them to activities the Club has to offer. The Club has put in place a specific monthly fee structure for young professionals (that maintains the $25,000 initiation fee that applies to all new members of the Club) and we will monitor our progress on this front. Protecting the value of your membership is always a top priority for the Board of Directors. We have adopted a new guest policy that allows to allow non-family member guests to use the Club up to 12 days a year (three times a quarter) for dining, tennis, golf, social events or other activities when accompanied by a member. This policy does not apply to

member-sponsored events such as weddings or private functions, children and grand-children under the age of 26 or family members when accompanied by the member. The Club will notify members and the non-member if visitation limits are exceeded, and we ask every member to be mindful of this updated guest policy. In addition, we are now offering members a “Family Week” Guest Pass when hosting out-of-town guests. Family Guest Passes are $100 per week, and allow the out-of-town guests unlimited access to all facilities and services of the Club without having to be accompanied by the Member during that week. Members may also continue to purchase a $35 summer “Babysitter Pass” for use at the Irving Park and Farm pools. Complete information on the new rule can be found online at www.greensborocc.org or by contacting Brittany Mitchel at b.mitchell@greensborocc.org or (336) 275-8506. As we celebrate this summer, continue to bring your friends, business associates and neighbors to the Club. When they enjoy all of the activities that we have to offer – from the new poolside Donald Ross Terrace to special events such as the Wine Dinners – be sure to provide them with a membership application packet! Monty Hagler Membership Committee Chairman

Membership Committee Meeting Dates The next scheduled Membership Committee meetings will be on Tuesday, July 22nd at 5:15 p.m. and Tuesday, August 19th at 5:15 p.m. If you need an application package or have questions regarding sponsorship please contact Brittany Mitchell at b.mitchell@greensborocc.org or at (336) 275-8506 Ext. 104.

June marked the last month of the “Guest Membership” program to help introduce prospective members to the Club. More than 25 individuals and families participated in the program, and a majority of these guests subsequently submitted applications and joined the Club. The Membership Committee thanks all of the members who sponsored these and other applicants, and we encourage all Club members to continue to support our membership initiatives.

General Manager’s Message Dear Members,

Steve Matlaga, CCM

General Manager/CEO

I am sure that like me you can’t believe that the 4th of July is here already. The Club is alive with increased activity and your participation is having a huge impact. Financially, we are on budget through May, and June is looking positive as well. Overall Club revenues through May are at the highest levels in the last 11 years, with food and beverage revenues leading the charge. Golf revenues (carts and guest fees) continue to struggle (winter hangover) so please “get out and play”! As you might imagine, the Donald Ross Terrace has been a big revenue contributor since its opening on Memorial Day Weekend. As of June 22nd, the Donald Ross Terrace brought in over $50,000, and the exciting news is that $47,000 of this revenue is new revenue not revenue stolen or displaced from other locations.

July | August 2014

We are continuing to make subtle improvements to the Donald Ross Terrace based on your feedback (now open until 8:00 p.m. on Sundays) and sales trends. Look for new menus in early July for most of our Food and Beverage locations. We will also have special theme events (Taste of Spain, Shrimp & Mussels Boil) in July and August that you won’t want to miss. We encourage you to send in imaginative ideas for future events at the Donald Ross Terrace.

Page 4

Be sure to sign up early for both the July and August wine events. Each evening will feature the owner/winemaker as a presenter, and I can personally validate the passion and energy they have for their craft! Please also pass along any great wines you have found to John Centore and me, as we love finding “gems” to feature in the selection of the month, and in some cases on the ever-evolving wine list. For those of you with culinary talent, please connect with Chef or me on participating in our second “Chef for the Day” event on August 2nd (save the date!). Last year's Champions

Robert Helms, Garrison Coley and Sous Chef Alex Pierce are prepared to defend their title! The Blue Dolphins are off to a great start this swim season with a number of exciting victories. I am excited to report that many of our swimmers are setting new personal “bests” and team spirit is high. So far this season, two new Blue Dolphin time records have been established! One long-standing record time went all the way back to 1994, so join me in congratulating the whole team for their efforts as well as our new record holders: Davis Knox - 100 Freestyle New Record: 54.25 Previous Record: JJ Marus 55.45 (6/28/1994) Solveig Anderson - 25 Breaststroke New Record: 22.46 Previous Record: Berit Andersen 22.61 (6/6/2007) Please also take the time to support our annual GCC “Swim for Cancer” efforts. Our Club has a rich history of leading the charge in the community for this deserving cause. If you would like to make a donation or support this effort please contact Michelle Sharpe at (336) 451-7838 or asharpe5@triad.rr.com. Our Club has a busy summer in store for you, so please take the time to look at all of the exciting events in this newsletter and join us for some GCC fun! The GCC team and I wish you safe and fun family adventures and travels, and we see you around the Club!

What a terrific week Chairman Poindexter and his Committee conjured up for the members and their invited guests to experience. From the Thursday rain on the practice round day, the players were blessed with perfect golf weather for the formal competition. After more than a decade of playing in the member-guest, Ed Sartin and guest Scott Mitchell triumphed in the shootout and receive the champion’s trophies. A tense battle in the shootout with 20 players all in one group for the clash of alternates shot-making culminating with two teams on the final hole. Rodney Speight and brother Jackie played confidently as they advanced to the final sparring spot on the eighteenth teeing ground to match strokes for the crown. It came down to the third shot for both teams. Ed Sartin had an approach from outside 100 yards that Scott had stroked for the team. A choked down on the grip for control nine iron was solidly struck and the ball was just the precise distance needed for a proximity to the flagstick safely on the green. Jackie Speight was next to play with an effort partially intervened by one of the prominent pine trees right of the fairway. The ball was played with authority and except for it landing a tantalizing two feet too short and then sliding backwards down the precipitous slope to the sandy abyss craftily designed by Donald Steel. Rodney splashed his bunker shot from the hazard leaving a ten foot par challenge. Mitchell then putted first to two feet for Sartin to close the deal. With an impressive stab from Jackie Speight for the par that narrowly missed the 4 1/4” target, Sartin holed the par and seized the victory.

Golf

Congratulations to Mike Murray Jr. who successively defended his match play title with a final match victory against the perennially competitive tough opponent Jim Morgan. In a match closer than the margin indicates, Mike was a 4&3 winner as he positioned himself for the repeat trophy status. Consolation distinction went to Alex Poole who edged ahead of John Kirkman and a 2&1 decision. The President’s Flight honor was gathered by James Mitchell who “putted the lights out of it” according to his opponents. Mitchell’s victory came with a 3&1 decision over Mark Brassfield. In the consolation, Jerry Highsmith and Frank Cheney preferred a marathon match, not just relenting in the stipulated round up to the eighteenth hole. Extra time was needed to determine the trophy recipient. Going to the 21st hole, Highsmith was the ultimate victor. First Flight was dominated by the steady pace of Lee Bentsen as he sliced through the opposition to meet fellow member-guest committee member Cabell Poindexter. In a well fought match, Bentsen forged ahead to be a 3&2 victor. In the consolation bracket, Ralt Bohn had a tough time eluding the ever pressing John Starkey. But Bohn prevailed 2&1. Second Flight championship was a rough and tumble match on the mat as Ken Overbey diligently stayed the course trying to overcome the stellar play of Mikael Svensson to no avail. Svensson was not to be denied as he consistently produced the shots needed at the right time for a 4 & 3 margin. Consolation flight was another match made for observing when Fred Turner repeatedly blocked the efforts of Rick Schneider for a 2 & 1 win.

Bill Burling Repeats as Senior Champion

With steady play amid a chorus of errant shots and miscues from fellow competitors, Bill Burling added a third crown to his senior titles at GCC by winning the Senior Club Championship. With steady rounds of 73-73, Burling edged Gene Grubb by one stroke. The Farm course had lower scores for the first round with John Starkey leading at even par 72 followed by a large contingent of hopeful aspirants within four strokes. But the Irving Park course showed its mettle with the lowest round posted by Burling at two over par. In the net division Lee Bentsen forged a two under par performance for first place honors with 69-72 for his winning margin. Senior Club Champion: Bill Burling (R) Senior Net Champion: Lee Bentsen (L)

News Family Golf

Have you seen the new metal markers on the paved paths at Irving Park and on the first nine of the Farm course? The new Family Course adds two levels of additional tees to each hole well in front of the existing tees. Teeing grounds are marked by a Family Course tee plate on level locations in the fairway. In addition, a smaller locator tee is placed near the cart path to indicate where to find the Family Course tee marker in the fairway. Because the forward tees on most golf courses are approximately 2500 yards for 9 holes, they are too long for kids and adult beginners. With the addition of two sets of tee locations (Level 1 - 1,500 yards for nine-holes and 3,000 yards for eighteen-holes and Level 2 tees - 2,000 yards for nineholes and 4,000 yards for eighteen-holes) all family members are able to enjoy their round. We have been using the Family Tee Markers for our Junior events and our Parent-Child events. We encourage parents to play with their junior golfers from the Family Tees and enjoy the more forward distance.

Turf Talk Member Maintenance - Do the Right Thing

The point is that if everyone takes more pride in our courses by consistently doing all the things mentioned above, then by a huge margin, we - the members - are the ones that benefit the most. No one wants to hit out of an unrepaired divot or putt over a bunch of ballmarks, and they definitely don’t want to hit out of someone’s foot print in a bunker. The Club has engaged in numerous awareness programs on this subject and will continue to do so, but ultimately the etiquette on the golf course will only improve if everyone agrees it is an issue and then takes ownership. The best way to take ownership is to not only make sure you are doing the proper things but to make sure everyone in your group is doing the right things when it comes to course maintenance etiquette. Parents who play with their children should stress the importance of this type of etiquette and hopefully instill an early sense of pride that should come with being a member at Greensboro Country Club. It doesn’t matter if you are a junior, a senior, a lady or a man - everyone should take a few extra minutes out their round to do the right

thing and even more so, they should make sure everyone in their group also does the right thing by speaking up to those who don’t. In the end, DO THE RIGHT THING and everyone will reap the rewards. Thank you and we appreciate your continued support. Kevin Green, Golf Committee Chairman Gene Grubb, Greens Committee Chairman

From Douglas Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course and Grounds Maintenance

Meet One of the Guys Mike Elliott, Farm Course Spray Technician Mike came to Greensboro Country Club in 2006 from Starmount Forrest. Prior to that Mike served short stints at Falcon’s Lair in Wahala, SC and Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. While Mike has many responsibilities involving numerous equipment operations his primary responsibility is in the area of spray applications and with well over 100 plus acres of turf to maintain the sprayer seldom sits idle. Mike has been married for 14 years and has one daughter 14-years-old. Mike’s favorite food is shrimp and his favorite band is Cravin Melon. Mike’s favorite movie is the classic Casablanca and in his free time he enjoys playing video games. The next time you see Mike on the course be sure to thank him for his many years of service for the Club.

The members' expectations for golf course conditions are always high, and rightly so given the reputation and stature of this Club. When members and guests come to the Club to play golf, what can be perceived by some as "work" is the last thing on their minds. But there is a seemingly never-ending conversation surrounding golfer etiquette as it relates to the maintenance of the course. From an operations perspective, when it comes to course conditioning versus the operating budget, the labor line item is by far the biggest limiting factor. In a perfect world, which our golf course maintenance staff always strives for, there would be no divots left unfilled, no ball marks left without being repaired, no bunkers left without being raked, no broken tees scattered across the tee box and no trash left to blow in the wind. In a perfect world there would be enough staff to monitor all these issues throughout any given day. But the reality of the situation is that there is not enough staff to repair ballmarks each morning, and even if there were, the damage would have already been done by the next day. The staff currently rakes bunkers three times a week and spot checks them on the other days. Divots are filled on the tees, fairways and range tee on a biweekly and sometimes monthly basis. The staff also strives to pick up broken tees and trash daily, but it can’t all be done an instant.

Aquatics From the Pool Deck Memorial Day was a success at both pools! “Duct Dynasty” powered by Emerson McCormick and Payton Adcox took home the honors of the Cardboard Cup during our 2nd Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta. We also had record-breaking numbers at the Irving Park Pool and the opening of the Donald Ross Terrace. The Blue Dolphins kicked off the season with a win against Lake Jeanette. We couldn't be more proud of how our swimmers have performed and demonstrated great sportsmanship and “winning” attitudes throughout the swim season. Our parents are a huge part of our team and we want to thank all parent volunteers this season. Looking ahead, we hope for continued safety and success at both pools. Make sure to join GCC for our July 4th Pool Party, and also come out to support our Blue Dolphins as we race for the win during our July dual meets and for the City Meet Championship. See you at the pool! Lindsay Pegg, Director of Aquatics & Youth Activities
