Time for Some Summer Fun!
President’s Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Fellow Members, It’s Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy! Many of you will no doubt associate these famous lyrics with Billy Stewart’s 1966 release of “Summertime,” which quickly became a top 10 hit and helped propel Billy Stewart to fame at the early age of 29. Stewart’s rendition of “Summertime” is certainly the classic, but it is a curious bit of music history that Stewart adapted the song from George Gershwin’s 1935 opera “Porgy and Bess” and that since that original release there have been at least 25,000 different renditions of “Summertime.” Billy Stewart unfortunately died an untimely death at age 33, when his Ford Thunderbird plunged into the Neuse River near Smithfield, North Carolina, resulting in an ultimately settled lawsuit in which it was alleged that the vehicle was defective. Without that untimely demise, Billy Stewart would have no doubt contributed much more to the sounds of summer. At GCC this summer, we are confident that you will find the Livin’ to be quite easy. While it is always nice to get away for that vacation with family or friends, there is so much that you and your families can do right here at GCC:
July | August 2017
• The Donald Ross Terrace is up and running for the summer with a terrific new menu from Chef Shayne. The DRT has proven to be a wonderful addition to our Irving Park facilities and is a great place to relax after golf or a day at the pool or to meet friends for a casual evening. Live Music Saturdays are already set for the summer at the DRT and will be featured on July 15th and 29th and August 12th and 26th. These evenings have been well-received by our membership and do not require a reservation. Please also look for other offerings at the DRT this summer that will be developed “real time” by our staff. • Enjoy First Friday Happy Hours with live music on the Sunset Terrace. These are scheduled for July 7th, August 4th and September 1st and will feature first-class live entertainment that will ease you into your summer weekend. The Sunset Terrace also has a new menu that we hope you will enjoy, and please keep in mind that our new plan is to start changing all of our menus at GCC on a quarterly basis. • For a different experience, please check out our dining options at the Farm. If you have not seen it yet, the Farm Clubhouse and the patio have a fresh new look, and
Page 2
we have a new “farm menu” ready to go for the season. The Farm will also feature some fabulous Thursday night buffets, and, although the Farm golf course is closed for the summer while we convert the greens to Ultradwarf Bermuda and construct our new Teaching Pavilion, lunch at the Farm on Wednesdays through Sundays is becoming an increasingly popular option with our Members. If you have not been out there yet, please try out the Farm for a change of scenery and a nice summer lunch or dinner. • Be sure to get your children or grandchildren involved in our summer youth activities, which will be a focus of our programming for the season. Friday nights will be reserved for kids at the Pavilion with themed activities, dinner and a movie. What a great way for kids and their friends to enjoy the summer in a very casual but supervised setting. Please check the Club website for details about all of our youth activities, including various specially-designed swim and golf programs and some new and nicely priced dining options for our younger eaters. We hope to provide a broad range of summer youth activities that will be appealing both to our GCC children and their parents and grandparents! • Work on your golf game! Please remember that the practice range at the Farm will remain open this summer while our greens conversion project is in process. If you want to have your game in good shape for the fall when the Farm course reopens, our new Director of Instruction, Robbie Fritz, will be thrilled to schedule some lessons with you. We hope that you will take advantage of the teaching and practice opportunities at GCC that only the lazy hours of summer can provide. I hope that all of you and your families will have a wonderful summer experience. As you can see, there is a lot to choose from at GCC and the “livin’ is easy” both at Irving Park and at the Farm. Please let us know if there is anything the GCC staff can do to help make your summer more enjoyable. Sincerely yours,
Thomas C. Watkins President P.S. Not quite sure why I decided to mention Billy Stewart’s “Summertime” in this letter. The list of songs about the summer is obviously endless and so are the memories: “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” “Summertime’s Calling Me,” “Summer in the City,” “Summer Breeze,” “Summertime Blues,” and the list goes on. In any event, please be sure to make some memories of your own this summer at GCC!
Membership
(336) 275-8506
Membership Message Since the Great Recession of 2008, membership at most country clubs has been an uphill battle. The fee associated with joining a club, combined with the monthly dues, creates a real family budgeting discussion, especially with increased competition from local neighborhood pools and tennis facilities at significantly reduced prices. I want to thank the staff, the Membership Committee and every Member who’s supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. Through May, we have welcomed 15 new members and their families. This momentum has unfortunately been offset by 26 resignations. The chart below represents our membership trends over the last decade and illustrates the challenge we face (a net loss of 212 members, or down 14% from our peak in 2007 to April 2017). We make every effort to follow up with those members who resign in hopes of learning how we might improve, and if there is a way to prevent the resignation. The primary reasons for resignation are non-use (which often refers to simply aging out) or relocation.
We encourage you to invite a prospective member to an event at GCC. Be on the lookout for opportunities to bring a guest (and their significant other) to the Donald Ross Terrace or the Sunset Bar Terrace, where your guest can enjoy a fun evening and interact with other members they already know. On select nights, your guest will enjoy the evening free of charge – we’ll be creating several opportunities per month where bringing a guest is fun and easy (while respecting the guest policy limitation of three times per quarter). No Member wants to feel pressured to bring or introduce prospective members; however, there are other forms of “selling” our Club by simply talking about your experiences and sharing your enjoyment. This softer approach can be an equally powerful marketing tool. Please let me, the Membership Committee, or Membership Director Lori Frasier, know if you have any questions regarding how someone can become a Club member, or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member.
Matthew Rankin, Chairman Membership Committee
Welcome New Members Mr. & Mrs. Michael Goodes Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kress Over the last decade, Greensboro Country Club has made great improvements to both facilities and amenities. To continue to upgrade and modernize, and meet our nearterm and long-term planning goals, we must all share in the responsibility for recruiting new members and thereby maintaining our vibrancy and financial strength as a Club. At GCC, funding for capital improvements comes from initiation fees and monthly capital dues, so our new membership headcount is obviously very important to all of us.

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, The summer season is now upon us and we are in the midst of sunshine, swimming, tennis and golf! Spring was quite wet, but we were able to move some events indoors and continue to serve our Members and guests. Whatever Mother Nature brings us during the spring and summer seasons, be assured that we are ready to accommodate you, your guests and your events! Our recent events have been the best in the Club's history and I thank you for continuing to book your occasions and enjoy our Club sponsored events here.
excellence in amenities and facilities, caliber of staff and professional service levels, quality of membership, adapting to changing times and overall experience. It is quite an honor for me and for our Club to be considered and to execute this feat. I am confident that once we attain the Platinum Club status, our Members and guests will forever feel pride and honor to be a member of one of the 150 best Country Clubs in the nation, out of 6,500 Clubs. Have a wonderful summer!

Our Farm renovations are complete with the Bridal Room/Ladies Locker Room now checked off the list and we look forward to the Brides enjoying their luxurious Robert Lesinger surroundings while relishing in their special day at the General Manager/COO Farm campus. During the spring we started construction on our teaching pavilion, which will offer our golf enthusiasts wonderful opportunities to enhance their game in a new state of the art structure. Our Pavilion officially opens in August. While we are talking about change, you may have noticed some changes to the kids menu in the Family Grille, the new menus in the Sunset Room, Family Grille, Donald Ross Terrace and 1909. We recently conducted an online survey to ask what you want to experience at your Club. Thank you for taking the time to participate in the survey, and the focus groups. Please continue to provide your feedback about how we can provide you with better service. Our goal is to provide you with the extraordinary service and amenities. I am happy to announce that the Board of Directors has given us approval to enter the Platinum Club of America program. Being a Platinum Club has universal recognition and is known as a domicile of excellence. When rating a Club for Platinum status, the focus is on

8:30 a.m. Shotgun Each year, we use one of the Tuesday ladies play days as the “state net” tournament. Scoring includes low gross, low net and low putts. Our lowest net scorer will get her name on the perpetual plaque in the ladies locker room and a small gift from the Carolinas Golf Association.
Our Champion is the player with the lowest 36-hole gross score. The remaining awards are based on net scoring among flights of similar handicaps. Everyone can enjoy some fun time on the course and all have a chance to win net awards in their flight.

Spring on the Courses Farm Ultradwarf Conversion Update
As I pen this update we are now in our second week of the Farm Ultradwarf Conversion project. Weather has already been a factor with May being the third wettest month on record for Greensboro, with 80% of that rain coming during the last week of the month or the first week of the project. But as with nearly everything we do on the course, we take what Mother Nature gives us and try and make the best of it.
July | August 2017
When we are talking about weather, we are mostly concerned with rain and more specifically how much and when. Rain early in the process is bad and rain throughout the middle part of the project is desirable. The changes we are making to hole #5, the chipping
Page 18
area and bunker on #14 require a lot of earth moving and in our clay soils, a large rain event simply shuts everything down. The no-till portion of the project is very vulnerable to washing the first 10 days after planting, which is the amount of time a new sprig usually takes to form new roots and anchor itself to the ground. The schedule accommodates for plenty of time to grow in the no-till greens (11 weeks), but due to the scope of work on #5 and the Chipping Green, there is not a lot of spare time to finish these projects, plant the greens and get them open on schedule (seven-week grow-in). Therefore there is a real likelihood that #5 and the Chipping Area will, in the least, be lagging behind the other greens or may in fact not be ready to open for play with our current opening date of August 19th. We are only 10 days into the project, so it is still too early to predict this outcome despite our slow start.

Everything will need to be managed keeping Douglas Lowe, CGCS that very important factor in mind. Director of Golf Course and Grounds The second thing that affects playability is the new firmness of an Ultradwarf playing surface. While this is one of the most attractive features of an Ultradwarf surface, for many it is also something that a lot of golfers struggle with after being used to the receptive nature of Bentgrass greens. While no-till greens are planted on the existing thatch layer left behind from the previous Bentgrass greens, it will still require one to two years before the new Ultradwarf develops its own cushion. Even then, the greens, if managed properly, should on average play much firmer than a Bentgrass green. This one attribute is what takes most golfers the longest amount of time to figure out
