Member Spotlight: Kerry Reaves & Doug Dohner
Balancing out all the responsibilities of daily life can be difficult, but you both manage to workout several days a week. In your experience, what has been the biggest benefit of making time to exercise?
Kerry: The biggest benefits for me have been overall health and wellbeing really, especially with having three young kids. I wake up in the morning and feel better when I’m working out regularly, and just mental health-wise, you feel better when you’re working out consistently. As you get older its really important too so that keeps me coming back.
Doug: The mental and physical aspects, releasing stress, boosting confidence and really just all the health benefits. My father had heart problems so it helps keep me healthy, I’m not 25 anymore.
What motivates you to keep showing up day after day?
Kerry: Keeping up with my kids and being a role model for them. It’s been great for them, and now they are starting to come with me to workout. My girlfriend Courtney has also been one of the biggest motivating factors in my life as well. Her experience with exercise includes yoga and teaching spin classes and she has gotten me to try doing things I’d never do on my own before like stretching that have really helped me out a lot as well.
Doug: The results are really what keeps me coming back, its not really a grind so much for me anymore. If you make it part of your lifestyle, it gets much easier. It makes me you feel better so that you actually want to do it. Having accountability was a huge part for me, if someone is counting on you showing up, that will keep you coming.
You recently tried a program written by Zack, did this change your motivation in any way? Or how did this affect your experience working out in general?
Kerry: Since I started coming to the Fitness Center after it reopened, I’ve lost around 30 pounds and I’ve gone down two sizes in my waist. I got fitted recently and the measurement differences are huge. Having someone to workout with, like Doug, has been really important to my success as well. We started to plateau though after a while and the program with Zack really helped us progress even more. Just having someone who knows what they are talking about structure a program for you makes all the difference in the world. I saw a big difference in six weeks of doing the program and I’ll still mix in some of the exercises he showed us from time to time.
Doug: It gave me different things to try that also give me good results. It helped switch up my routine; I like to switch things up about every month or so and Zack’s program helped with that. It helped stop the plateau in the results I was seeing. I don’t need a trainer necessarily after a certain point, but you’ll see guys that go for their monthly tune up with a golf pro, you should do the same with a trainer. You’ve got to learn somewhere!
