Greensboro Country Club May | June 2017
Time for Some Summer Fun!
President’s Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Fellow Members, Greensboro Country Club was founded 108 years ago because of a developing local interest in the relatively new game of golf. As is recorded in our history, during a summer excursion to Maine in 1905, Greensboro businessman A. W. McAlister first witnessed the game of golf being played and liked it so much that he purchased some clubs and brought them back with him to Greensboro. The rest is history, with the founding of GCC dating back to 1909 discussions among McAlister and other local enthusiasts for the new game. GCC had about 100 charter members when the club was formally incorporated, with dues of $2 per month for regular members and $3 per month for golfers.
May | June 2017
Our commitment to the game of golf obviously remains very true today. We have two wonderful courses and, with the greens conversion and improvements that we have in process at the Farm, our golf facilities will be second to none in the area. We have obviously come a long way since A. W. McAlister’s nine-hole, pitch-andputt course with sand greens, dating back to our origins in 1909. It is critically important, however, that we recognize that GCC today must be far more than a golf club. Interestingly, a club offering more than just golf was perhaps envisioned by our founding fathers. Our history recounts that GCC’s early organizational documents describe the mission of the club as the “promotion and encouragement of outdoor athletic games and exercises, including golf, tennis, croquet, automobiling and all other forms of wholesome and healthful sports, games and amusements.” Although our early bylaws also provided that “no game shall be played on the club’s property on Sundays and no intoxicating liquors shall be kept, sold or drunk on the grounds of the property belonging to the club,” there is also ample evidence that these constraints were not strictly enforced. A 1915 Open House invitation, for example, called for dancing at the “Masked Ball” until 1:00 a.m. (you can use your imagination!). GCC has certainly evolved far beyond these early
Page 2
governing provisions and has changed with the times, but there can be no doubt of our current need to consider all forms of “wholesome and healthful sports, games and amusements,” as suggested by the documents filed by our founders more than a century ago. The future of GCC today is being charted by a strategic planning process that will guide us as we make decisions about our mission, our facilities and how GCC as a Club can best serve its membership. Our members have been participating in focus group sessions to discuss the Club’s future and we hope to be engaging in a comprehensive survey of our members very shortly, using information that has been provided to Club management in the focus group settings. Our goal is then to move quickly to develop a member-driven strategic plan for the future, which will have an implementation timeline that will be feasible for GCC. Against the backdrop of this strategic planning process, our ongoing high levels of enthusiasm and activity at GCC are very exciting to see. We have an incredibly talented and dedicated staff in place, most recently including a new executive chef and a new chief financial officer, and, with our new team ready to go, we are extremely well positioned to execute upon any strategic or master capital plan that emerges from the very deliberate process that we are undertaking to shape our future. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to encourage all of our members to continue to share with any of us on the Board, and with General Manager Robert Lesinger and his staff, your own visions and suggestions for the future of GCC. Our membership at GCC is diverse and creative, and we really need your input. I hope to see you and your families at the Club soon, enjoying “wholesome and healthful sports, games and amusements,” as envisioned by our founders more than 100 years ago. You have a lot to choose from! Very truly yours,
Thomas C. Watkins President

Membership Message Spring is here, and with it I’m pleased to report that new Membership applications are coming in! Year to date, we have accepted 11 new, well-qualified Members, and at the time of this writing, we have five applicants posted. My thanks to the staff, the Membership Committee, and all the Members who are supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. I’d also like to share two new Membership policies approved by the Board. First, the Club is implementing a sixmonth trial Membership (no initiation fee, no monthly dues, and no capital dues) to any legacy child under the age of 40. The applicant’s parents must be current Members, and will be financially responsible for any expenses unpaid by the applicant after the trial period ends. Accepted applicants will enjoy all facilities and privileges granted to Members, including the ability to invite guests to the Club in accordance with our guest policies. Secondly, we have restructured how the initiation fee can be paid by incoming members. For the categories of Senior New Issue, Intermediate, and Young Professional, the amount of the down payment for the initiation fee has been reduced, and the number of years by which to amortize the remaining balance has been extended. Additionally, a 20% discount on the initiation fee will be granted to those applicants who elect to pay the entire initiation fee up front. These incentives are available through the end of 2017. I hope you will encourage your children, friends and colleagues to take advantage of this opportunity. Finally, I am delighted to report that we have a new Membership Director! Please be on the lookout and provide a warm welcome to Lori Frasier, who joined our GCC family on Monday, April 24th. During Lori’s transition, please feel free to contact either me or Brenda Seal (b.seal@greensborocc.org) if you have any questions regarding how someone can become a Member of our Club or how we can help promote our Club to a prospective Member.
Matthew Rankin, Chairman Membership Committee
Remember to check our Membership page on the website and the bulletin board downstairs to see all posted Members. If you have any comments or concerns in regards to posted Members please contact Brenda Seal at (336) 275-8506 or b.seal@greensborocc.org.

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, It’s finally springtime, and the weather is slowly getting warmer, which means it’s time to get outside during the day and play tennis, swim, and of course golf! For those who enjoy the indoors, we have lots of fun events happening at both of our Clubhouses for you and your guests to enjoy! In March we celebrated the newly renovated Farm Clubhouse with the Farm Reveal Party. Thank you for coming to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a vodka tasting and live music. Your feedback was instrumental in our remodeling efforts. The Farm has seen a significant growth in attendance at Thursday Night Buffets and Sunday Brunches! You will be seeing more events at the Farm in the future, with weddings, rehearsals dinners, and of course our Member Golf Events which we hold annually at the Farm campus. In April we had our favorite spring activities in the great outdoors, our Easter Egg Hunt at Irving Park and the Spring Carnival at the Farm. We know you and your families enjoyed them tremendously!
May | June 2017
May is bringing us special events with Mother’s Day Buffet, the President’s Cup and also the Memorial Day Pool Party. We had to drain our Irving Park pool this March to make some much needed repairs to get ready for our summer swim season. We are excited about this year's Blue Dolphins team, and are sure they will have an outstanding season led by our new Coach Frances McEachran. Please stop by and say hello to our Aquatics and Youth Activities team when you are in the vicinity of our newly done Pavilion! Katie, Jon and Paul are hard at work planning kids activities, birthday parties, the ever popular Arcade Night, and Kids Nights Out on Fridays, just to mention a few of many happenings in Youth Activities. We are also excited to have a new Tennis Pro join our Club, all the way from Australia, via San Diego, California! Emma Cioffi will make a great addition to our already terrific team of tennis professionals. Speaking of tennis, we have more tennis programs
Page 4
than ever, with Ladies Gate City Clinics, Tennis 101, Future Stars, Superstars and Junior Tennis Training. Our tennis courts are freshly paved, striped and we are ready to go! We are also proud to offer our paddle tennis enthusiasts some much needed refreshments while on the paddle tennis court. We have had rave reviews about our court-side food and beverage offerings, and will continue with these amenities for the foreseeable future for your enjoyment. Our planning efforts are underway at the Farm, too. As we renovate the greens to provide extraordinary surface on the new turf and build a short game area, we invite you and your guests to the Irving Park course to enjoy golf rounds and taste cuisine from our award-winning Chef, who is really setting the fare to a very high standard. Some of you participated in our Focus Groups which have enabled us to tailor the Clubs future needs to what you said you want to enjoy and we are listening. Our focus was to first complete the Farm facilities and then do a minor touch up to our Board Room where all our Past Presidents reside in picture format. In the last newsletter we said we are going to remodel the Sunset Dining Room, Bar and Terrace. We have decided to put off any major renovations until our Strategic Plan is done and we have foresight into the future of the Club industry and what your desires are. When the Board Room remodel is finished we encourage you to reserve it for your company meetings and small parties. A reminder to our golf enthusiasts about playing at our neighbor courses. Please let me or Bud Taylor know if you would like to play a few rounds at one of our reciprocal clubs in the area. We are happy to accommodate you and your guests any time for an outing. Please continue to provide me with your feedback about our staff and customer service. Our goal is to provide extraordinary service each and every day.

March
Dallas Fardel has worked for the Greensboro Country Club since 2014. He started out working in our golf department as a golf cart attendant. In the summer of 2015 he moved upstairs to work as the HR intern, and after he graduated in May 2016 he moved on to other opportunities. In September of 2016 he returned to work as the HR Coordinator, and he continues to be in that position today. When Dallas isn't at work you can typically find him working out at the gym, enjoying a concert, or hiking in the mountains.
+1 Program March
Brandon Nowak, Head Golf Professional at Irving Park, demonstrated a very selfless act voluntarily (and without prompting) by assisting the landscape crew in laying the pavers adjacent to the tennis courts. Brandon has been witnessed doing many things that are not in his job description. He is quick to offer help to anyone needing it.
April
Justin Paitsel works in the Men's Locker Room. He has worked in many areas of the Club including banquets and the dining rooms. Justin goes above and beyond the call of duty. He is always there with a smile on his face when members and staff need him.
What’s Happening at GCC?
In addition to the newsletter, Greensboro Country Club uses a wide variety of technology-based communication tools to keep you up-to-date regarding events and activities, as well as to provide you with important Club and member information.
Website & App
GCC is excited to announce that we will be launching a new website in June! This website launch will be a few weeks ahead of a new App that we will roll out to the Membership in July. Once you download the App from the App Store or Google Play, you will be able to make tee times, court times, receive notifications from the Club and more. Your username and password will not change, and you will still be able to make tee and court reservations in addition to enjoying the functionality of the website that you are accustomed to. Watch for more information in the coming weeks regarding this wonderful upgrade!
Email Communication
One of the most vital communication avenues used by the Club to communicate with the members is via email. This is the fastest way to reach the membership for everything from Club events to important operational information. We understand that members often receive a number of emails from various sources each day, and the Club has made a concerted effort to combine emails whenever possible. Interest-specific emails are sent to members who have elected to receive those emails by using the “Opt-In Groups” function in your member profile on the website. To get to your profile, log in to the internal website, click “Directory” and then find “My Profile.” Select which opt-in groups are best suited for how you use the Club, and then you will only receive those emails when we send out information pertaining to your specific groups. You can opt-in or opt-out of these groups at any time, allowing you to truly personalize your GCC email communications.
Bridge Notes Ladies Day Cards
Join us for a morning of socializing and Bridge at Ladies Day Cards on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Lunch is offered for all attendees. Upcoming dates include May 10th & 24th and June 14th & 28th. Guests are welcome.

Spring is here, and with the new season brings a new slate of offerings from the GCC Culinary Team. We are excited to have a whole new collection of ingredients to offer. With menus changing twice a month you are sure to see something fresh and new that will pique your taste buds. Our local farm list includes pork from Heritage Farms in Goldsboro, NC, produce from Windmill Farms in Mayodan, NC, and micro greens from Fare Share Farms in Pfafftown, NC. In April, we rolled out the new Family Grille menu for brunch, lunch and dinner. You will find an emphasis on seasonal ingredients with a comfortably creative approach. Our Sunday Brunch Buffet in the Family Grille has many enhancements including the addition of an omelet and waffle bar. Also new in the Family Grille is the Prime Rib Night offered on the first Saturday of each month. And if you’re in the mood for the finer things, the Sunset Dining Room and Terrace may be your destination. New items are always being added to the menu, so be sure to come back often! Lastly, please make reservations to attend a new and exciting event, "A Taste of GCC" on Tuesday, May 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We will showcase all of our venues at Irving Park, including the Farm (in the Irving Room). There will be small plate food stations, drink pairings, and of course friends! This will be a great night. Have a great spring, and I'll see you in the dining rooms!

Perched on top of soaring coastal ridges that border the Pacific Ocean, Flowers Estate Vineyards were some of the first planted on the extreme Sonoma coast in 1991. Flowers Vineyards rise up just two miles from the rugged Pacific Ocean cliffs at elevations up to 1,875 feet. The Maritime breezes and coastal fog cool the vineyards during the heat of summer allowing fruit to fully mature with fresh, complex flavors and lively acidity.
Château d’Esclans is located on an exceptional site, on elevated land near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty five kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast. The château is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavor than do the younger vines. As the elevation to where the lots are situated increases, so do the age of the vines. At the highest elevated lot, vines are as old as 90 years.

New Greens
Greens Chairman, Kevin Gunter, Board Member, David Egerton, Director of Greens and Grounds, Doug Lowe and I have spent time traveling the southeast in search of the ideal grass to put on the Farm greens. We have spent time at facilities that have all three types of the leading ultradwarf greens, and have spent much time in consultation with the leading experts in growing this type of grass. Through Doug’s blog, many of you are aware of the decision to plant Champion Ultradwarf Bermudagrass. Having worked at a club in south Florida with Champion and then seeing this grass perform in our region of the country, I believe GCC will have unrivaled playing conditions at the Farm. With the zoysia grass tees and fairways, and now Champion greens, GCC is making changes to enhance the playing experience for all members.
Gross Winners: Tom Henley, Bill Lyon, Steve Warren & Bob Hudson
Net Champions: Mike Mattingly, JR Wiswall, Bill Burling & Walt Howell

Spring on the Courses
May | June 2017
Spring officially arrived on March 20th this year, which means the days have started to once again become longer than the nights. With that should come warmer temperatures and, most importantly for our membership, more opportunities to get out and play some golf. For the golf and grounds maintenance team, spring denotes a time of the year to begin picking up the pace and concentrate on all the many tournaments and projects planned for this year’s growing season.
Seventeen out of eighteen of the greens will be converted via a no-till conversion method, which essentially means there will be no changes to the existing surface. The one exception to the no-till method will be the green on hole number five. For this hole, the entire green complex will be rebuilt to eliminate the current steep slope that works from the front towards the back of the green. The new slope will be flatter in nature and therefore more receptive to incoming shots. Also, an entirely new green (in addition to a new practice bunker) will be built on the chipping area. The construction of these two new greens will force them to be planted three to four weeks later than the remaining greens, and therefore Ultradwarf Update The Farm course is set to close on Tuesday, May 23rd to they will be several weeks behind all the other greens allow for the conversion of the greens from Bentgrass on opening day. With that said, the membership to Ultradwarf Bermuda and to make a few significant should not expect the same putting quality on these improvements to the short game practice area. The first variety is the original Champion The Ladies Opening Day event kicked off the season that has been used at hundreds of courses over the by playing from the new forward tee locations on the past 20 years or so. The second variety is their newest Irving Park course. The new forward tees were put in release that was planted at Quail Hollow last year and place for anyone who wants to enjoy a shorter course is slated for planting at several more courses in 2017 to include men, women and children alike. The current including but not limited to Eagle Point, Yeaman’s yardage is around 4,000 yards at Irving Park. The Farm Hall and North Ridge Country Club. There are a few course will measure slightly over 4,200 yards. The key factors that make up a short list of pros and cons current plan is to keep the Irving Park tees very between the two types of grasses and we will continue simple by using a combination of existing tees along to research this decision to ensure we choose the best with mowing out small areas in the rough and fairways grass for Greensboro Country Club. We expect to make to create shorter holes. The plan for the Farm course a decision on the final selection of grass by sometime is to build new teeing grounds wherever existing tee in early May. boxes do not provide the appropriate shortened distance. Fortunately for GCC we removed a great many trees during the 2009 Douglas Lowe, CGCS renovation, which meant we had less than 20 on our Director of Golf Course and Grounds list of removals. The majority of these trees have already been removed with only a few remaining.
