Membership Message GCC Membership is off to a strong start in 2017! Often, January and February are seasonally slower months for new membership; however, we have accepted five new, well-qualified members and have two applicants posted. My thanks to the staff, the Membership Committee, and all the Members who are supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. While we have good momentum into the New Year, we have suffered four resignations year-to-date. New members help sustain our capital model and are essential to the capital budget, allowing us to enjoy, improve, renovate and expand the fantastic facilities we all enjoy. Together, we need to assume the responsibility to grow our membership. Now that the renovation of the Farm Clubhouse is complete, I encourage you to experience the Thursday night buffet in a newly designed setting. The St. Patrick’s Day party (March 17th), the NCAA March Madness special menu (beginning March 7th) and the Adelsheim Vineyard wine dinner (March 8th) would serve as an excellent opportunity to invite guests and their families to showcase our Club. Having a healthy, participating membership is the lifeblood of any great club. We are presently interviewing for a new Membership Director and in the interim, please feel free to contact either me or Brenda Seal (b.seal@greensborocc.org) if you have any questions regarding how someone can become a member of our Club or how we can help promote our Club to a prospective member.

Matthew Rankin, Chairman Membership Committee

Remember to check our membership page on the website and the bulletin board downstairs to see all posted members. If you have any comments or concerns in regards to posted members please contact Brenda Seal at (336) 275-8506 or b.seal@greensborocc.org.

Welcome New Members Randolph (Randy) and Cherrie Ariail Joseph and Lauren Crowder Matthew and Michele Slaine

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506

March | April 2017

Dear Members, As spring approaches, we look forward to gorgeous weather to enjoy the outdoors playing tennis, golf, paddle tennis and becoming more active in general.

to Bermuda Ultradwarf. This new grass will provide you with a faster and better golf game and gives our Members a choice of playing golf at two completely different greens. We are also building the teaching facility we promised for our golf enthusiasts.

Have you played paddle tennis yet? Paddle Tennis is on fire at GCC. We had 130 members in our paddle tennis league and we have had challenges with the Forsythe Country Club. We also have two events in March, our Paddle Party Game Night on March 3rd and on March 11th we have our inaugural Member-Member GCC Paddle Tennis Tournament! We are planning for the Member-Member Tournament to be an annual event. Are you getting hungry while playing paddle tennis? You can now order directly from the courts and have your order delivered to you with our special paddle tennis menu. We thought of everything you may need while enjoying the facilities of the Club.

During this spring season you will see more activity than ever at the Farm campus, as we work to promote more events there. Our Event Sales team is hard at work booking weddings in the beautiful Clubhouse and outside terrace areas. Your dining experiences at the Farm with Thursday night buffet and our Sunday Brunch offerings will be better than ever with the new bright ambiance, and you will never miss a game at one of five televisions at our expansive bar.

I am also proud to announce that our new Executive Chef has arrived. Chef Shayne Taylor comes to us from South Carolina where he was the Executive Chef for Hampton Hall Club. I am very excited to have Chef Shayne at Greensboro Country Club where his talent and artistry in food will soon amaze even the most discriminating palette.

Robert Lesinger General Manager/COO

While our construction effort is completed at the Farm, we are now focusing on making a minor facelift to the Sunset Room, Bar and Terrace, and the Family Grille areas. We are freshening up our spaces to give you a more modern and open feeling, so you and your guests can feel even more welcome at our dining facilities. We are also preparing to close our golf course at the Farm on May 22nd for 13 weeks to convert our Bentgrass

Page 4

Please continue to provide me with your feedback as we remain on track to make improvements to both campuses for our Members and Guests! Have a wonderful spring season!

Greens Renovation

The renovation of the Farm greens to Ultradwarf Champion Bermudagrass that will take place from May 22nd to August 17th, will add another dimension to your golf experience. No longer, during the height of our golf season in the summer, will you putt on Bentgrass greens that are slow and soft due to the constant watering and raising the height of cut required to keep them alive in the heat. The Bermudagrass loves the heat! The hotter the better. What you will experience post renovation are greens that roll true and fast almost the entire year. There is a time period in the spring when the greens come out of dormancy and the grass is outgrowing our ability to keep it cut (this is a short period of time that will be managed effectively by Doug Lowe and his team). The new greens will be firmer than what you are accustomed to. For the first two years or so, you will need to play for the ball to release once it hits the green. This firmness is due to the lack of organic (thatch) build-up under the surface. Once there is a managed layer of organic material under the surface, the greens will become much more receptive to shots hit into them. To counter this firmness, we will also manage the location of the cups cut into the greens. Mostly, we will keep the hole locations away from the fronts of the greens. This will allow you to land a shot on the front part of the green and have it release toward the hole. So prepare yourself for great putting greens virtually the entire year!

Reciprocal Clubs During Farm Course Closure

During the closure of the Farm course, several area clubs have graciously agreed to provide access to the GCC Membership. Access and rates will be communicated at a later date. The following clubs will be part of our reciprocal program:

Alamance Country Club, Burlington Country Club of North Carolina, Pinehurst Bryan Park Golf Courses, Greensboro Sedgefield Country Club, Ross Course, Greensboro Sedgefield Country Club, Dye Course, Greensboro Starmount Forest Country Club, Greensboro Old Town Club, Winston-Salem Carmel Country Club, Charlotte Carolina Country Club, Raleigh Governors Club Chapel Hill, NC

Learning Pavilion Update

The construction of our new Learning Pavilion will begin soon. This also is an exciting new feature to the golf operation. We will have an indoor hitting bay that will allow you to take golf lessons using the latest video and launch monitor technology. And there will be three under cover stations for members to practice. This area will have roll down doors that will be up during the summer, complete with ceiling fans to cool you. In the winter, the doors will be rolled down, complete with heaters to keep you warm.

Golf Shop Renovations

The Irving Park Golf Professional Shop has been completely renovated, with new fixtures, paint on the walls, added access to the outside and new furniture. The goal of the renovation was to provide an upscale shopping experience with an “Americana feel to the Golf Shop. The Farm Golf Shop will also undergo a renovation this summer when the golf course is closed for the greens renovation. The new spring merchandise will be arriving soon, so please stop by and see what we have to offer. Bud Taylor, PGA Director of Golf

The Year in Review

March | April 2017

In my last few newsletter articles I touched on the Ultradwarf conversion project on the Farm course. When I wrote my first article in the fall it was just a mere topic under discussion and up for consideration. In the January newsletter I spelled out that it had been approved and we were moving full steam ahead with planning. We are still in the planning stage with our final step that involves assembling a detailed construction document to go out to bid to the three highly qualified contractors for our final cost estimate. Included in that document will be two noticeable changes. The most notable change will be the complete redesign of the number five green complex. This is a unique green design that features a small sized green with more slope than normal and a unique pitch from front to back that was intended to defend what is the shortest hole on the course. This design works well with a receptive Bentgrass surface but may prove to be too difficult for the average golfer with a firmer Ultradwarf surface. Another area of concern that was discussed by a large representative group of members that was assembled to study the issues related to a conversion was the right side of 14 green. This is the only other area of the greens throughout the course that also has a front to back pitch. The conclusions of that group and the Green and Grounds Committee was the large mounding guarding the right side of the green and the bunker should be softened by lowering these features to prevent any unfair bounces onto the green that may result in the ball rolling through the green. Billy Fuller, of Billy Fuller Golf Design, has been retained for all our new design work on the Farm course. Mr. Fuller is a very accomplished designer and he is very familiar with the course as he served as our primary construction consultant during the 2009 Donald Steel renovation. This is a very important change for the Farm course, and as such, there will be much more to come out on this topic from Bud Taylor and myself as the season progresses. At the same time the conversations related to changes of the greens were being discussed, another smaller group was assembled to begin researching the various

Page 20

varieties of Ultradwarf grasses on the market to determine which type would best suit Greensboro Country Club and its membership. After much research, which included multiple site visits, meetings with various superintendents currently growing the different varieties, university researchers and the sod growers themselves we have narrowed down the selection to Champion or a newly released variety of Champion called G12. Champion is the primary grass of choice for courses here in North Carolina including the more prestigious clubs here in Guilford County. As demonstrated by these clubs, if it is managed properly Champion will produce an exceptional putting surface year-round. The Ultradwarf conversion is not the only thing going on outside at GCC. The new golf learning center has had several design revisions and we hope to begin work on the construction of this new facility sometime in late winter. It is expected to take 90-120 days from ground breaking. We are also currently putting together a proposal for Board consideration to upgrade the short game area at the Farm. If approved, this project would be included along with the Ultradwarf conversion project and would be completed by late summer. The Irving Park staff is currently working on a small landscape improvement project for the area around the three lower clay courts that we hope to have completed before commencement of spring play on these courts. There will also be some additional minor landscape improvements to the side entrance of the main clubhouse which we hope to conclude before spring planting season. In addition to the several improvement projects taking place, the staff at each course continues to work on select tree removals, refurbishment of a large number of golf course accessories, which is all done in conjunction with our daily maintenance practices on the course. The weather thus far this winter has been very good with the exception of one small cold event in early January, so I hope everyone has had a chance to get out and play the courses, and if not dust off those clubs because spring is right around the corner.
