Greensboro Country Club March | April 2020
General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, Our Newsletter is filled with activities, programs and fun for all ages. I am pleased to report we continue to add and refine programs as we receive feedback and comments from the Membership. We can’t say this enough constructive feedback is vitally important for a Club to be viable and respond appropriately. As I manage by walking around at appropriate times, it gives me the opportunity to speak and learn from staff and Members in all areas and departments. Recently a few Members asked what my greatest challenges were. I replied challenges are, as they say, opportunities. I narrowed it down to a few areas. The first area being the age of the assets at the Irving Park and Farm locations (in front and back of the house) which is being addressed with the potential renovation, and our comprehensive reserve study which identifies usable life of the current assets on properties. Other areas are governmental regulations in general, health care, the opioid and drug crisis, and things all businesses are struggling with in this decade.
March | April 2020
Another nationwide situation is human resources. We now have five generations of people in the work force who are trained and brought up with different values, manners and lifestyle. This also translates to the Membership for services they request. Our opportunity lies within both arenas. Meaning, what new and different services can we provide now and in the future, and how do we train and adapt the staff? I recently took an educational seminar about this very topic. There are 28 percent less people available for filling positions in the work force. Millennials are the largest number of workers available - Greensboro is no exception - and the way they were raised is different from how most Members' expectations and interactions merge. Knowing this, we can respond in our training for this age group. For the Food and Beverage department (we train appropriately in other areas as
Page 2
well), we hired an age-appropriate skilled trainer onsite, and we do video training. Most millennials learn this way in school. They clock in and out on their smart phones and receive schedules electronically. We do all-day on-boarding about our Brand. We take the time each evening to explain and listen to them. It is insightful and helps them acclimate to the Club culture. Our metrics have proven our strategy is working as turnover is decreasing, consistency is increasing and it is being noticed. We will continue to review and adapt our programs to make member experiences notable in all departments. I am looking forward to a lovely, fun spring for Members and guests to enjoy their Club! Hope to see you soon! Sincerely, Terra S.H. Waldron, CCM, CCE General Manager/COO
