General Manager’s Message Happy May! If “April Showers Bring May Flowers” it should be beautiful around Irving Park and the Farm properties in May. As we transition from a pollen-laden spring and leave the fun of our first Carnival at the Farm and fairways happily strewn with over 6,000 eggs and many enjoying our “Wonka-themed" Easter, I just want to say “thank you” on behalf of the entire staff for your strong support Steve Matlaga, CCM General Manager/CEO of GCC. Our Oyster Night established a new record in the Sunset Dining Room (171 dinners) Willy Wonka's and when we had the opportunity to open the Easter Egg Hunt DRT and you came out and had fun. When the sun came out you fought cabin fever by filling up the Tennis Courts and Golf Courses and Fitness was especially busy when it rained. Operationally, through the first quarter, I am glad to report that we are ahead of budget with great revenue support from you and good expense control from the GCC Team.

May | June 2015

We are not without our challenges going forward as the weather seems to always be a wild card. The abnormally cold February (10 degrees below average) this season impacted us and other area golf courses negatively with a high rate of “winter kill.” I encourage you to read Doug Lowe’s article in this newsletter and follow his blog at http://douglaslowe.blogspot. com to understand and receive updates regarding our turf recovery plan. We will also send you an email when he updates the blog.

Page 4

As I visit with Members around the Club at various events the questions I get the most are when is the Donald Ross Terrace opening for the season and what is going on with the Master Plan. The plan for the Donald Ross Terrace this year was to open when the weather allowed in April and then open for season in late May. We intend to have “pop-up” openings at the Donald Ross Terrace as weather and operations allow in May until we open for the summer on Memorial Day weekend. You will notice on the back page of this newsletter that we will be moving to a full schedule of six days per week starting this year in response to

your requests. In regard to the Master Plan, the Committee, Board and team are working diligently to complete viable options by late summer/early fall after which we will schedule “Town Hall” meetings with the Membership to get feedback and ensure we have the “better and best” options outlined. It is important to understand that there is no timetable to start any project, but rather a commitment to identify, define, communicate and present the best possible options to the Membership for the future relevance and sustainability of the Club. Be on the lookout for a more in-depth update from Mr. Holt Gwyn (Master Planning Committee Chair) later in the season. We are fortunate to have a great team at GCC and I want to recognize our own Tom Cascarano who will be inducted into the Carolina’s USTPA Hall of Fame in May. Please join me in congratulating Tom on such a special achievement. May promises to be extremely busy with Member Guests, Cardboard Boat Races, Wine dinners and of course Mother’s Day. We hope to be a part of your plans to have big fun and special times at GCC. In reading Chef Greg’s column, I can attest to the difference our new Executive Pastry Chef is having and we are all looking forward to select fresh, local, high quality seasonal products in our food and beverage outlets. We remain focused on being your destination of choice for all things Food and Beverage including hosting all of your private event needs. Please join me in wishing our culinary team good luck as they compete in the “Fire in the Triad” competition representing our great Club. Watch for more communications as we follow their journey to take the win! Until then, see you around the Club!

Dining From the Chef

I am sure everyone is as excited that spring has finally come to the Piedmont. We are getting daily deliveries of local strawberries and asparagus, and look forward to a full offering of local produce in the near future. It’s all about the food and staff preparation as we quickly approach the snack bar and Donald Ross Terrace season. I am excited about our new hours this summer as we learned a lot about membership preferences for the outdoor dining venues last season. We are opening six-nights-a-week in the Donald Ross Terrace and all day on Tuesdays accompanied by the Family Grill Snack Bar so we are able to deliver quick and creative food for all ages. In the Donald Ross Terrace we will feature some of the favorite offerings from last year with some great new offerings. We will also feature nightly fresh fish entrées from day boat suppliers that will be flown in from around the world directly to the Club. I am proud to announce that we have a new Executive Pastry Chef. Ben Shelton has been with us full time since April 1st. Chef Ben is responsible for the beautiful chocolate and blown sugar displays featured in the lobby at the Christmas and Easter holidays. Ben is quickly getting acclimated to the demands of our busy Club. Our first focus is creating fine a la carte dessert offerings in all restaurants while creating new, consistent and fresh pastries for banquets and special events. We will be working on new banquet desserts for our fall season and will continually grow our offerings. Not to worry - we can still make a wonderful caramel cake!

Fire in the Triad

After taking a season off it’s is time for me to pass the toque to our culinary sous chef team led by Alex Pierce (Sunset), Billy Cain (Family Grille) and our secret weapon Ben Shelton. For those who may not know, we entered this state-wide culinary competition two seasons ago. It is structured very similar to the Food Network's “Iron Chef” show where you have a three-person team competing against another team with a secret mystery ingredient(s). All of the themed ingredients are North Carolina products, which stay in line with our farm to table philosophy. This is an elimination format, win or go home. This is truly a

Page 10

wonderful learning experience for the team as they rub shoulders with other local chefs from around the Piedmont area and try to take home the coveted red jacket. We will keep you informed as we encourage everyone to come dine, vote and support our GCC team. Many of you have been asking about cooking classes so I have scheduled a few for the summer months while the kitchen is slower so we can invite you behind the scenes for an interactive culinary experience. Our first class is "The Hole World is a Doughnut." This class will be geared for children ages 10 and up that are interested in cooking (or maybe just doughnuts!) We will be making various doughnuts from around the globe. We will start with nutritious smoothies because heavens know we will need it. Additional classes are listed below. I hope to see you there! Golf Golf Update The Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is a free initiative open to boys and girls ages 7 to 15, of all abilities, competing in separate divisions in four age categories. PGA members and their facilities like ours hosted local, sub-regional and regional qualifying over the past year to narrow the participants down to 80 finalists, vying for their respective division titles at Augusta National Golf Club. In total, thousands upon thousands of youth participated in qualifiers spanning all 50 states and 41 PGA Sections. Additionally, registration is now open for the 2016 Drive, Chip & Putt Championship qualifiers, which take place May through August of 2015. We hope to have a large representation at the National Drive, Chip and Putt qualifiers across our area. There was a change in the dates for Drive Chip & Putt for the Greensboro site. the Guilford County School System has decided to push back the last day of classes to June 16th based on the many days they missed because of the snow. The Bryan Park qualifier was moved to Thursday, June 18th. You can see all of the dates and locations on their website.

Member Milestones

Great shot! Anne Fox made her first hole in one on March 16th on the 3rd at Irving Park. Playing 117 yards, she, Sherry Marus and Debby Adams watched the ball stop toward the back of the green, then slowly start to roll back down to the front hole location and into the hole! John Watson continues his streak of good luck with the oneshotters. He aced the 12th at Irving Park recently. Followed by another hole-in-one on the 5th at the Farm on March 29th. This makes his tenth hole in one for his career golfing. John claims his luck is coming from playing along with Robin and Vincent Tosco and his wife Laurie. This is the third ace he has made playing with them!

Eskimo Open Winners

Congratulations to Randy and Billy Buchanan for their play in the Eskimo Open conducted on March 6th. Posting a fine 3 under par 69, the father-son duo won by a single stroke

over Lawrence Hicks and Don Smith. In the net competition, Bob Hudson and Ken Overbey (who flew in from Manhattan just to participate) were stellar in posting a 64 tie Tyson Pugh and Parker Burke for first place.

We are excited to get all of our juniors out on the golf course to enjoy some new events this year!

The format will be an 18-hole stroke play (gross and net) event pairing an adult with a junior player who is not an immediate family member. Juniors must have competed in junior events both at the Club and away. Flights will be determined by the junior’s age and the adult’s handicap will be utilized for scoring the event. Adults will play from their respective tees based on USGA handicap guidelines and juniors will play from tees based on age. Entry Fee: $15 per player (includes prizes and refreshments following play) Adults sign up as an individual or a team. Please call the Farm Golf Shop at (336) 288-4470 to sign up.

Member Reminder

Sunday, May 31st | Irving Park 1:00 p.m. Shotgun Start / 18 Hole Format Register to host your guests for this enjoyable afternoon at GCC by Wednesday, May 27th.

Tuesday, May 19th | Irving Park 9:00 a.m. Shotgun Start To continue to grow participation, please invite another GCC Club Member who does not regularly participate in ladies golf to join you at this month’s Combined Captain’s Choice. Everyone will enjoy a morning of golf and optional lunch. (Monthly team format with a combination of the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Ladies Golf groups.)

Tuesday, June 9th & Wednesday, June 10th Irving Park Instead of the monthly Captain’s Choice format, the 18 holers and 3 Fore 13 will play a fun team game where you can pick your two partners and score one best ball of the three players.

Helpful information for the staff when turning in your scorecard for handicap posting: • Please put both first and last names on scorecards. The member number is helpful for clarification, but the full name is more helpful. • Please specify tee played and note if players played from different tees within the group. • Please “cross out” those persons not wishing to keep a handicap such as a guest.

Ladies 18 Hole Opening Day Ringer Tournament - Tuesday’s 18 Holers

Tuesday, May 26th | 9:00 a.m. Shotgun Tuesday, June 2 | 8:30 Shotgun - Farm See how low you can score as your first round’s hole by hole score may be improved with the second round’s play. (“3 Fore 13” will have their own Ringer Tournament in September.)

Turf Talk Spring Is Finally Here! Although spring has been here for several weeks now, as I write this those beautiful 75 degree days have been few and far between and the memories of a brutally cold February are still fresh on my mind. It would be very surprising if we didn’t experience an above-normal amount of winterkill to our warm season grasses due to the well-below-average temperatures in February. However, it is still too early for any type of accurate prediction. Nonetheless, the threat of snow and brutally cold temperatures has disappeared and we have officially moved back into our in-season maintenance mode.

May | June 2015

Aerification

The Farm greens were aerified in early March and are making a slow recovery due to the cool temperatures. The Irving Park greens were aerified just three short weeks later. We attempt to get this first aerification completed as early in the season as possible to allow for a minimally uninterrupted spring golfing season on our Bentgrass putting greens. Our greens core aerification program is built around university research that demonstrates we need to impact 20% of the surface on an annual basis to regulate the appropriate amount of organic matter accumulation at the soil surface. This is critical because that same research has shown once organic matter accumulation exceeds 3% problems begin to arise due to too much water retention. High levels of organic matter retain too much water resulting in less oxygen diffusion and ultimately anaerobic conditions that result in root decline and increased disease pressure. In order to achieve our goal surrounding organic matter management we aerify greens three times each year: once in early spring, once in late spring and once in late summer.

Bunkers

Once the snow finally disappeared this winter, the staff began working on bunkers throughout the two courses. The first thing they began work on was adjusting the sand depth throughout all the bunkers. Bunkers lose

Page 18

sand each year and that loss of sand is generally due to three primary reasons. The first is due to days with high winds that occur at various times throughout the year. The second is where the players shot can dislodge the sand to an area outside of the bunker. Just take a look at the practice bunker on the short game area at the Farm if you want to see an accelerated version of this. Another big source of sand loss is from the constant use backpack blowers to keep the bunker clear of debris. A significant amount of sand also slides down the slopes every year from wind, rain and irrigation cycles. As a result of this sand loss and movement, the staff spends numerous hours every year adding sand to bunkers to get them back to the proper depth and moving sand back up onto the thin slopes. When we move a significant amount of sand onto the slopes of a bunker we follow that up with running a small compactor over these areas to minimize plugged lies. We are also experimenting with a new raking method referred to as the Australian method. This method concentrates our raking efforts more towards the center and subtly sloped portions of the bunkers. With the staff spending less time loosening the slopes and edges of the bunkers, the sand in these areas has the ability to setup and become more firm. The goal is to produce less fried egg type lies in the face of the bunkers and less lies left up against the edges.

Etiquette

As many of you will be coming back to the game after a long winter’s reprieve, please keep course etiquette at the top of your list. Always repair your ballmark and at least one more. Always remember to fill your divots with divot sand or if the divot is thick and still firmly in tact, place it back and lightly tamp on it. Please remember the ninety degree rule means to drive along the path until you get to your ball where you then make a ninety degree turn (shortest route possible) directly to your ball. From there continue down the fairway until you have hit your last shot or reached the cart exit post and then return directly to the path. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Tuesday, June 9th through Thursday, June 11th & Tuesday, June 16th through Thursday, June 18th 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | Irving Park Pool and Pavilion

Mini Dolphin Swim and Fit Camp is for children ages 3 to 6 who are comfortable in the water but who are not yet ready to swim independently or for the Blue Dolphin Swim Team. The camp is designed to keep campers active in a fun and safe environment. Each day of camp includes a group swim lesson with a GCC swim instructor, a fun fitness class, and fun games and activities in and out of the water. Each day of camp is limited to 10 campers. Check our website for schedule, group and private swim lessons and more swim information or contact Kelley Holoman at k.holoman@greensborocc.org.

Blue Dolphin News

Summer swim season officially begins with our first outdoor swim team practice on Monday, May 18th at the Farm Pool. We hope all swimmers can join us for the first practice of the season. This practice will be a special combined practice to celebrate the start of the Blue Dolphin Season, and for swimmers to get to know their coaches. Following practice, stick around for food, dessert and more!

Parent volunteers are a vital part of summer swim meets, and we encourage the entire swim team family to come out for Swim Meet 101. This is our first Saturday practice will be dedicated to helping parents learn about what it takes to run a swim meet including the different volunteer jobs they might be interested in signing up for during the season and an informational session with Coach Katie. Swimmers in all age groups will swim practice heats, and the times they get will help coaches determine entries for our first swim meet on June 9th!

Swim for Cancer “The Million Dollar Challenge”

In 2014, for the twenty-sixth consecutive year, the GCC Blue Dolphins earned the first place trophy in the Community Swim Association’s Swim for Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The Blue Dolphins raised over $41,518 in 2014 to bring our 26-summer total to over $954,000! This would not be possible without the hard work of all of our swimmers and the generosity of GCC members. We encourage all of our swimmers and their families to participate in this wonderful fundraiser because if we each do a little, our team can do big things. 2015 could be an even more exciting year for our Swim for Cancer fundraiser. The Blue Dolphins could be the first team to break the $1,000,000 mark! If we all work together, we can raise the additional $50,000 for the American Cancer Society and become the first swim team to raise over a million dollars for cancer research! For additional pool information, including Swim for Cancer, pool party packages, swim lessons, team calendar and bus schedule visit our Club website at www.greensborocc.org. See you at the pool, Lindsay Pegg Director of Aquatics & Youth Activities
