Time for Some Summer Fun!

President’s Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Fellow Members, I am writing at another time of transition at GCC as we undertake to identify a new General Manager. While we are in very good hands with CFO Michelle Lunney serving as our Interim GM, it is essential of course that we engage a permanent GM to lead our Club. The search process is already underway and we have received a number of resumes from highly qualified candidates. We hope to complete the process as quickly as possible, but at the same time we are not in a rush to fill the GM position. We are fortunate to have terrific staff in place who have stepped up with smiles on their faces to help us as we work through this time of change. Please thank our staff for their dedication when you have the chance. They are a super group of very capable professionals who are incredibly committed to our Club. The GM job at GCC is a very attractive one and is well known as such in the club industry. We will find the right person.

May | June 2018

In the meantime, while our GM search is ongoing, the Board is moving forward, in conjunction with our consultants, Chambers USA, to finalize a Strategic Plan that will serve as a roadmap for our future direction. We had hoped to be releasing the Strategic Plan in early spring, but circumstances have slowed our progress, so it will be a little further down the road before the Plan, which has been developed using findings from our recent membership survey, is adopted and ready for implementation. One component of the Strategic Plan will be to begin to address some of our aging facilities. We will be prioritizing based on the age and physical condition of certain assets (such as our Irving Park pool and associated amenities) and making recommendations to the membership on where best to deploy our capital resources as we undertake to responsibly maintain and improve the facilities in our two-campus model. We are confident that we have a great opportunity to move forward with some projects that will be significant long term enhancements for our Club and that will be very exciting for our membership and enjoyed for years to come. We look forward to sharing these recom-

mendations with all of you as soon as they are further developed. Our Club is a true hub of activity as we move into the spring and summer. We especially want to welcome the 80+ new members that we have added through invitation since we launched our recent membership initiative. These new members are using and enjoying our facilities and they are helping to provide us with the level of financial resources that we need in order to deliver a best-in-class Club experience to our membership. The success to date of our membership drive has been a team effort, and for that we thank everyone who has been involved in sponsoring or endorsing our new Members. Please keep up the good work! On behalf of your Board I want to thank all of you for your support as we address our administrative leadership. We are of course happy to take your calls and we welcome your suggestions. We look forward to completing this process and are very excited about the future of our Club.   I will look forward to seeing you soon at one of our many venues! Welcome to springtime at GCC! Sincerely yours,

Thomas C. Watkins President

Your Senior Leadership Team is as strong as ever and we are looking forward to an outstanding 2018 at the Club. Our wine dinners continue to be a huge hit with our Chateau Montelena wine dinner selling out. Be sure to sign up for the Rombauer Wine Dinner and Cakebread Cellars Wine Dinner soon, as these events are filling up quickly! It’s time to celebrate the warmer weather by heading outdoors whether it’s the courts, the course or the pool. There are so many opportunities to celebrate spring here at the Club. The Spring Carnival is right around the corner as well as the Cinco de Mayo party at the DRT. Be sure to join us for Mother’s Day and the Memorial Day Pool Party. The Tennis Spring Fling had an excellent turnout and clinics are now in full swing. Dear Members, Spring is back, and with the new season brings a full new slate of ingredients to offer from the GCC culinary team. Both the 1909 and Family Grille menus included new selections in April that include healthy options like grain and smoothie bowls, while our evening menu continues to focus on fresh takes of classics like our stroganoffinspired ribeye, chicken marsala pasta and scallops primavera. The Sunset Dining Room also had a fresh spring revamp to focusing on the finest “center of the plate” ingredients available, plus a larger emphasis on our inhouse, dry-age program. As we continue to hone our skills at dry aging, look for unconventional dry-aged items like mahi mahi, bluefoot chicken and karabuta pork tenderloin to be featured on the special board. With warmer weather taking hold, the Donald Ross Terrace is sure to be one of our best attended venues. This year the Donald Ross Terrace menu has a fresh look with our Taqueria section, and as always, woodfired pizzas are always a hit with our custom hearth oven.

In addition to new menu offerings, I’d like to introduce our new Executive Pastry Chef Ben Shelton. Chef Ben is the former Pastry Chef of the Year recipient, current nominee for the award again in 2018, as well as a former instructor and program director for Virginia College. Ben brings a wealth of knowledge and skill, plus a passion for teaching and mentoring young chefs. Please join me in welcoming a great chef to GCC! As always please send your feedback. Comment cards, emails and phone calls all work really well to help us customize our offerings to the tastes of a great membership! Happy Cooking, Shayne Taylor, CEC, CCA Executive Chef

Incorrect

Correct

When placing your left hand on the club be sure to grip it like you would when holding a suitcase. This means that you will curl the fingers of your left hand around the grip and place the heel pad on top. Proper placement in the fingers will lock the club in place to reduce tension and help you to properly square the clubface at impact. This tip will also help your gloves last longer because now that worn spot will be in the proper place on top of the grip.

Congratulations to the following junior golfers that have passed from their division in the spring semester of Operation 36:

No One is More Surprised Than Me

May | June 2018

While I mentioned the risk of winter related damage in my last newsletter it has now become very apparent I had it somewhat wrong. My focus or primary concern back in February was that the cold snap in December and January would result in measurable damage to the unprotected Bermuda on the tees, fairways and rough. At the time, I was fairly confident that our covering strategy would protect the greens from any type of widespread damage. Even during the coldest period, we never witnessed soil temperatures below the covers at a one-inch depth go below 28 degrees, which is well within the Ultradwarf's acceptable cold tolerance rating. What we didn’t or couldn’t measure was the temperature right on the surface where the single digit temps obviously made it through to anything the cover was touching. We now know covers clearly have their limitations with extreme cold weather events. It is now early April and I once again find myself reaching for what to tell the membership to expect going forward on the issue related to winter damage.

As this is a somewhat unique and rather large-scale event, we have little to go off of at this stage in the process to aid us in the development of any concrete plans. Our efforts to date to grow out plugs from affected areas on the greens have met with disappointing results. As such we are currently working on plans to close the course in late May and re-plant the greens. Assuming we are forced to follow through with another grow-in we will need to shut down to plant new sprigs and we expect a sprig grow-in will require us to close the course for the better part of June and July. By the time you read this letter I am sure our formal repair plans will have been communicated to the membership. As for the tees, fairways and roughs, we are seeing several areas that will need to be repaired with sod, but for these areas this will not be an abnormally largescale repair event like we experienced in 2015. Rather it will take a lot of labor and several truckloads of sod to repair some of the shady, wet or heavily trafficked areas. In an average year, this alone could cause several nights of restless sleep, but this is not a normal year and as such, my primary concern continues to be focused on restoring the Farm greens to a healthy and high quality putting surface in as quick a fashion as possible.

What we now know is the cold snap in December and January was a recording-breaking event that resulted in the greens at the Farm going completely dormant in most areas. The abnormally warm February brought to light what had occurred with some areas starting to Doug Lowe, CGCS grow and others laying dormant. The month of March Director of Golf Course Maintenance was abnormally cold, so much so, it ended up being colder than February. We are now in early April and the greens look almost exactly how they looked in early March. We do find some comfort in the fact that we have a lot of live stolons beneath the surface that in theory could flush out and eventually lead to a recovered putting surface. But my many years of experience tells me it may be a little too optimistic to think we can grow-in an entirely new surface from below ground stolons after the event in January and the prolonged cold temperatures extending well into April. As I write this update, we are scheduled to cover the greens this weekend (4/7 – 4/8) due to subfreezing temperatures in the forecast. Early April Ultradwarf Damage

Options for Younger Swimmers Mini Dolphins Swim Program *NEW THIS YEAR*

The GCC Mini Dolphins grew significantly in 2017, and this year we are adding an instructional component that is designed to help swimmers under the age of 6 learn “the basics” so they will be prepared to join the Blue Dolphins when they are old enough. The Mini Dolphins program will consist of two 10-day sessions. Phase I: June 4th - 15th, Monday-Friday, will aim to teach young swimmers how to be comfortable in the water within the first 10 days. Phase II: June 18th - 29th, Monday-Friday, will focus on breathing, kicks, and beginning stroke progression. Once the child has reached a level approved by coach Allison, the swimmer advance will receive detailed workouts designed by the assistant coaches and swim lesson coordinator. $15 per day or $125 per phase

Mini Dolphins Day Camp

The Mini Dolphins Day Camp will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Irving Park Pool during the last two weeks of the summer months. This would be an opportunity for young swimmers to hone their skills and a chance to have fun with their friends and members of the Youth Activities staff. The day camps will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m., and will include free swim, instruction, lunch and a movie. $40 per day or $100 per week Dates are as follows: June 19th - 21st; June 26th - 28th; July 17th - 19th; July 24th - 26th; August 21st - 23rd; August 28th - 30th
