Greensboro Country Club November | December 2015
Time for Some Summer Fun!
President’s Message Dear Fellow Members,
November | December 2015
It has been my pleasure to serve as your president this year. Inherent in this position is the relationship that one builds with the General Manager/CEO. I have found it to be a real privilege to work alongside Steve Matlaga and to watch him enthusiastically drive the engagement of his team while carrying out our Gail I. Bernstein vision for Greensboro Country Club. It is truly Club President masterful!
Page 2
Under Steve’s leadership along with Chef Greg John and his team, our food and beverage program has thrived. The wine dinners are sell-outs, our menu offerings are creative and delicious, using fresh local ingredients in a variety of dishes, and the Donald Ross Terrace has been a terrific place to gather for fun and fellowship. Through September, F&B sales are up $152,000 (or 6.5%) over last year at this time I am happy to report that overall, we expect to close out 2015 very close to our projected budget, despite the unanticipated $200,000 we absorbed to repair winter kill damage on both golf courses. Our ability to absorb the winter kill expense is mostly due to higher than expected banquet business, better control of labor costs and some deferred costs. We also expect to end the year under budget for capital expenditures. We are ahead of schedule in paying down our bank debt, and expect our net debt to be approximately $3.6MM at the end of this calendar year. The fourth quarter is extremely important to our financial success on the operating side, and I would encourage you to use your Club for your entertainment plans over the holidays. From a golf perspective, many members tell me that our courses have never looked so good. This is largely due to Doug Lowe and his staff who have done an excellent job maintaining our courses and expertly dealing with the
winter kill. I encourage you to bring your friends and enjoy playing our two beautiful courses, take a lesson from our new Director of Player Development Jerome Andrews and sign up for the many golf events offered at our Club. From what I’ve been hearing, Jerome has made a tremendous impact on those who have taken lessons from him. I’ve never played golf myself, but who knows…maybe I’ll give it a try! You all received Jim Deaton’s heartfelt letter announcing his retirement at the end of this calendar year, and while we understand and support Jim in this difficult decision, we will certainly miss him. Jim is the consummate professional, having elevated our golf program and inspired many over the past 11+ years at GCC. We wish Jim and Judy all the best in this next chapter of their lives. Please plan to join us as we celebrate Jim on December 30th at 5:30 p.m. in the Irving Park Ballroom. You will receive more information on this in the coming weeks. We continue to have a strong year welcoming new members and hope to end the year with positive membership growth for the first time in a decade. Many members have taken advantage of our incentive program to receive three months dues credit when they sponsored a friend, neighbor or co-worker for the Club. That dues credit program will be in place until December 31st, so reach out now to a qualified applicant that you know will enjoy the benefits, values and atmosphere of GCC. Finally, as I write this letter in mid-October, I’d like to share where we are with the master planning process. The definition of a master plan is “to develop or improve (land, a community, a building complex, or the like) through a longrange plan that balances and harmonizes all elements.” This year has definitely been a year of laying the ground work for our future through
Club News the master planning process, and while we are not finished with that process, we have made great strides in developing a comprehensive plan for our Club. In addition to working closely with our two architects, we have met with and solicited feedback from Past Presidents, Board members, Committee Chairs and many of our Committee members, as well as our two Master Planning Committees (golf and facilities). With every iteration of the plan, we fine tune the details and come closer to a final product that is truly exciting. Our goal with this long-term plan is to do it once and do it right! We look forward to sharing the plans with you at town hall meetings in early 2016, once the cost projections, phasing and financing options are detailed for our entire membership’s review and approval. This is an exciting time to be a member of GCC, and it has been a privilege to be involved in helping to lay the groundwork for our future. As always, please let me know if you would like to serve on one of our advisory committees to help continue our tradition of a “best in class” experience at Greensboro Country Club. Respectfully,

General Manager's Message
November | December 2015
Just WOW! Here we are heading into the last few months of 2015 with the Holidays just around the corner before I knew it. Time has moved quickly this year for GCC as we have faced "challenges and change" not anticipated last year as we planned for 2015. I know that I speak for the whole GCC team as I express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our Board, Committee Members and all other volunteers Steve Matlaga, CCM General Manager/CEO who have worked tirelessly for the benefit of our great Club. Our Club is about passion in so many ways, and we as a team are very fortunate "Happy Birthday" to work in an environment of mutual respect and shared vision towards a vibrant and special Flash Mob GCC. I am extremely happy that I chose to be a part of Greensboro Country Club, and over the last three years I continue to pinch myself as I see great examples of how special the Membership and staff is on a daily basis. At the end of October, a group of members and staff put together a "flash mob" to celebrate our personal trainer, Sue Haddon's birthday (please view the video on our Facebook page). Thank you to all participants, and it is this type of love and appreciation the staff and members have for one another that means everything!
Page 4
As Members, I hope you take comfort in knowing that you are represented by a talented Board that is dedicated and driven to ensure the long-term success of your Club. There is no doubt in my mind that through the efforts of all previous Boards, the foundation was laid for us to achieve the recognition of “Distinguished Emerald Club of the World” and I am so very proud to be a steward of our continued success and achievement going forward. For the past year, the 2015 Board has been laser focused on membership attraction and retention, a revised "Mission and Vision Statement," important by-law updates and the complex challenge of shaping and developing our future Master Plan. The Board has also been a true partner as the we sought to mitigate the $200,000 impact of “winter kill” with no felt impact to membership services. I am so proud of our mutual efforts and am thankful to our professionals in several areas that worked tirelessly to make this objective
a reality. Through our professionals responding as a team, I believe we will realize a positive financial outcome. Every year I have the honor of working with a new president of GCC. It is a shame that the term of president is only a year as this is a very short time to accomplish a large laundry list of meaningful and lasting objectives that each president brings to the table. Most of my time with the Club President is spent working together to solve the myriad of unbelievable and unexpected challenges that pop up during the year. Trust me, you just can’t make up some of the challenges we face. Gail Bernstein has been nothing less that exceptional in every facet of leadership and support that we could ask for, and it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve the Club and Board by her side this year. Early in the year at our annual awards “Employee Oscars” night, Mrs. Bernstein shared a story covering 30 years of her membership and involvement in GCC and in an unassuming yet clear team-building style, established why GCC is so special to her and to all of us. Thank you Gail for your leadership and guidance - 2015 has been an outstanding year! In addition, GCC won a blue ribbon at CMAA Idea Fair, gained industry and peer recognition as a Distinguished Emerald Club of the World and most importantly created “miles of smiles” for our member families. Lastly, I believe that learning is a lifetime catalogue of experiences and it is our job to translate learning into fun and excellent experiences for you at the Club. Watch for articles detailing our educational experiences. As always, please send along your feedback so we can serve you better. The staff and I wish you and yours a fantastic Holiday Season and we look forward to seeing you at GCC!
Steve Matlaga, CCM General Manager/CEO
Welcome New Members!
With the approach of the holidays, the Club is entering its busiest season with parties, private events and activities for members of every age. It is the perfect time of year to reach out to your friends, co-workers and neighbors and invite them to become part of the GCC family. Dozens of Club members have sponsored new members this year, and there is still time for every member to take advantage of the dues credit program before it expires on December 31st. Any member who sponsors a new member will receive three months dues credit (equal to the dues that are paid by the new member based on their age and membership category). In addition to reviewing and undertaking due diligence for every application that is submitted to the Club, the Membership Committee has continued to focus on making recommendations on rules related to membership. We recently undertook several small but important tweaks in the way we inform members about posted applications and how we conduct due diligence on prospective members. I appreciate the opportunity to have served as Membership Chair for the past three years and to work with so many engaged and interesting members who have served on the Membership Committee during that time. Please thank those committee members when you see them; their efforts help ensure the financial health of the Club. To learn more about the dues credit program, obtain a membership packet or arrange a tour for a prospective member, please contact Membership Director Brittany Mitchell (b.mitchell@greensborocc.org) or talk with any member of the Membership Committee. Dining
Tis the season once again... The culinary team and I have been busy planning events for all ages, interests and occasions. Right out of the gate this November we have the Summers Estate wine dinner. You won’t want to miss it! Then before you know it, Thanksgiving will be upon us. Please plan ahead this Thanksgiving. Many of us are aware of the Avian Influenza (flu) that has affected our poultry and egg supply. We have seen it at the grocery store with egg pricing, and now there is talk of a very tight turkey market heading into the busiest holiday for this protein of the year. Please plan ahead this Thanksgiving! We have secured our inventory of local North Carolina turkeys for the holiday, so please order or buy yours early this year. We will also be offering smaller spiral cut hams and beef tenderloin as options on our Thanksgiving and Holiday to-go menus. I am very excited to announce a new dining opportunity at the Farm in November and December. Starting Friday, November 13th and continuing through December 11th, we will offer a wonderful a la carte dining experience every Friday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. We will have a weekly, freshand-local focus for a five to six entrée menu. The menu will include fresh seafood, comfort food and our trademark steaks. We will also include a soup and salad bar. Seating is limited for a la carte nights so please call ahead. Also at the Farm we will have a Holiday Buffet on Thursday, December 17th, featuring prime rib, shrimp cocktail, fresh soup, salad bar and holiday desserts just to name a few items. We will also offer holiday brunches at the Farm on Sunday, December 20th and 27th. New this season in the Family Grille we will offer a wonderful "Black Friday Brunch" on Friday, November 27th. So stop by the Club before or after you head out to shop until you drop! Also on Saturday, December 26th we will have brunch available from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our regular breakfast and lunch a la carte menu will not be available. So bring your family and enjoy a quick bite during these busy days.
Don’t forget to come to our second annual Holiday Bazaar on Wednesday, December 9th and shop for holiday gifts for your family and friends. We will have many house-made creations to pick from such as peanut brittle, toffee, yappy hour dog biscuits, macaroons, candied almonds, granola, gourmet cheeses and specialty items. Egerton/Lloyd “Slip and Slide” to Four-Ball Match Play Honors
Congratulations to all our teams. Thank you for making this a successful event!
Folds of Honor
Our Cub has been recognized as a major contributor the nationwide campaign funding to provide scholarships and financial assistance to children and families of military who have been disabled or have died in service to our country. This year, we generated over $3,000 in the one-day event. In the golf competition, David Anderson, George Hall, Morgan Dowtin, and Trey Anderson were the wining team with a 56.5 net team total. A scant 1.1 strokes back were B.J. Szafran, Brey Curtis, Jeff Thomas and Ryan Zell with 57.6. A testament to the equity in the scoring was the third place team where a narrow .05 of a stroke separated the next team with a 57.65 as Ed Sartin, David Parker, Jack Sharp and Steve Warren.
Family Club Championship
Congratulations to the Harrington family and the Jones family who were the champions in the Family Club Championship. Dan Jones paired with kids, Samantha, Alex and Daniel to post a gross score of 63 for first place in that division. In the net competition, William Harrington was supported by wife Lori and son Daniel for a sparkling 57 to garner the family crown for 2015.

Get Results - "Posture"
by Jerome Andrews, Director of Player Development Often times the direction and path a player swings the club, hands and arms are directly related to posture. Starting from a balanced and athletic posture position is extremely important and will help players strike shots more consistently solid. Aligning the back of the right shoulder, front of the right knee with the ball of the right foot for right handed players will help create a more balanced posture. Creating this balance line allows the torso and legs to be balanced on top of one another, creates center of gravity in the belt buckle area of the lower stomach muscles and sets the weight in the feet towards the toes. By standing to a mirror as if hitting a shot in the opposite direction a player can work on creating a better balance line when turning their eyes to the mirror and holding a club with their left hand in line with the back of the right shoulder, front of the right knee and the ball of the right foot. This will enable players to see and feel the created balance line simultaneously. Get results, play better and enjoy the game more by creating better posture.

2015 Ladies Club Championship
“Elect to Play” Ladies Member-Member
Winning her fourth Championship, Peggy Flynn-Cook once again is our Club Champion with steady play in rounds of 78, 80. Her prior victories came in 2006, 2007 and 2010. She had a 5-stroke lead over 2014 Champion, Deb Cobb after the first round at Irving Park. In round two at the Farm, they each turned in 40. Jean Kiser was making up ground in the group ahead with a 38 on the outward nine. Like Flynn-Cook, Kiser birdied the 8th, then continued her fine play with a birdie on the 10th and finished with an 80 to tie Flynn-Cook for low round of the day. Jean's net 65 awarded her low net round for the day also and propelled her to be First Flight Net Champion. Jo Kennedy was the Net Champion in the Second Flight as she bettered Carol Boles by two strokes. Carol also had a great gross round of 40 on the first nine at the Farm with natural birdies on the 4th and 8th holes. Becky Campbell and Bonnie (L to R) Jean Kiser - First Flight Net Petersen tied for Champion, Peggy Flynn-Cook - 2015 Club Champion & Jo Kennedy 3rd with net rounds Ladies Second Flight Net Champion of 70 and 73.

Turf Talk My Favorite Season of the Year
Looking forward, the fall is a time where fortunately green speeds seem to take care of themselves with slower growth rates and lower humidity. In fact, the growth rate of all the grasses and not just the greens slow down during this time of the year and our focus shifts in large part towards managing leaf senescence. This means that the leaves turn pretty shades of red, orange and yellow and eventually fall
to the ground and our staff has the responsibility of blowing and cleaning up the leaves from thousands of trees at the Club’s two properties. The leaf cleanup season starts in October and peaks in the months of November and December. While the staff works diligently to stay up with the falling leaves there are always a great many days when we lose the battle. As such, make sure your group has a clear understanding the how you choose to manage the leaf rule before going onto the golf course during this time of the year. Lastly, fall is the time of the year you begin planning for the next year by working on operational budgets, chemical programs and fertilizer programs. Capital budgets also come due this time of the year and can involve items ranging from planning new course improvement projects to the acquisition of new replacement equipment. One of the more interesting planning projects going on right now here at the club is the Master Plan that touches on improvements to nearly every facility at the club with the golf department placing most of its focus on the Irving Park course. By now most should know Keith Foster was retained to create a Master Plan for the Irving Park facility with an emphasis on returning this course to its true Donald Ross character and hopefully that plan will be unveiled to the membership at-large sometime early in 2016. Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course & Grounds Maintenance November | December 2015
For a great many Golf Course Superintendents in our region of the world, the fall season is a time for calm reflection. Most will find the time to look back and think about what went right and what went wrong. This year the clear thing that went wrong was the Bermudagrass that never came out of dormancy in the spring. The thing that went well was the re-establishment of new Bermudagrass throughout the damaged areas in a reasonable amount of time and with a sensible amount of additional resources. Despite the large scale damage experienced at our two courses the cost was well in line with most clubs in our areas and well below some clubs that only have 18 holes to manage. The Bentgrass greens that are so often a primary concern throughout the summer months posed few problems for the staff this year due to a very normal weather cycle. While a lot of the feedback on greens this summer was the speed was slower than many would prefer that was more a result of limited manpower than it was plant management during the stress season. With over a third of our labor budget going to winterkill repairs, there was rarely a week that went by that allowed us to focus on green speed like we would in a normal summer. I believe some of discussions surrounding the summer Bentgrass green speed debate will always take place at courses within our region with a lot of golfers having lofty expectations but I am the first to admit speeds were down this year due in large part to circumstances beyond our control.
