Short Game Many members have asked how to hit various short game shots around the green and specifically why they are unable to hit short game shots consistently. Questions regarding 40yard bunker shots, executing high, soft lob shots, 30yard pitch shots or delicate chips from poor lies in the rough just off the green are common. Understanding your full swing tendencies will help you perfect your short game. The same reasons why you hit drives off line or are not quite hitting solid iron shots are the same reasons why you inconsistently hit shorter shots from 50 yards and in to the green. Unlike a full swing shot you don’t have as much time to compensate to somehow square the club-face through impact when executing a short game shot. Full swing tendencies also filter into and affect putting as well. To understand how to have fun, enjoy the game more, play more often and get results in your short game schedule a lesson by calling the Farm Professional Shop. The professional staff would appreciate the opportunity to help you get the results you want in the game!

Champions Crowned... 2016 Four-Ball Match Play Championship

Another great match play series comes to an exciting conclusion with a fitting end as the 58 teams narrowed to just two. The final match was yet again a very closely contested match as so many were this season. The finalists were even at the turn. Ed Sartin & Steve Warren were later two-up with three to play. Richard Beard made a 40 foot putt on the sixteenth to tie the hole and keep them in the match. Then partner, Daniel Craft almost aced the seventeenth. Craft’s tap-in won the hole and brought them to only one down with one hole remaining. Ties at the eighteenth secured Ed Sartin and Steve Warren the title for 2016 in dramatic fashion. The other semifinalists included Brad Penn and Shannon Michael and Walker Sanders and Jon Wall.

Summer Course Conditions Fall Leaves

First of all, it is hard to write a November newsletter article without making some minor mention of the fall leaf season, so let’s get that out of the way. With 300 plus acres inundated with trees, this time of the year keeps the staff extremely busy blowing and often times collecting leaves. As always, some days are better than others but we are always cognizant of the need to keep the course as clean as possible and appreciate the membership’s understanding on this issue until the last leaves fall and the final cleanup takes place, which usually takes place sometime in early January.

Golf Learning Center

November | December 2016

The new Golf Learning Center will be just getting under way by the time November rolls around. Not unlike any other large building project, there are a lot of things that needed to happen over the last several months to allow us to stay on schedule for opening this new facility by late winter.

Ultradwarf

The time has finally come for Greensboro Country Club to begin discussing the pros and cons of the new Ultradwarf Bermuda putting surface that so many of the clubs in our region have now switched over to from their prior Bentgrass putting surfaces. My role as Director of Golf Course Maintenance is to provide the best possible greens with whatever surface the membership desires, and more importantly, not to put the membership into a position where they are forced to make a decision based on the failure of the existing greens. It is also part of my role as Director of Golf Course Maintenance to offer recommendations that relate to improving business operations relating to both financial aspects and overall membership satisfaction. With that said, I believe a Bermudagrass conversion at the Farm would be a good business decision based on the fact our highest participation levels occur throughout the summer months. I believe a conversion would also increase the overall satisfaction of the golfing experience based on the quality of these putting surfaces I have personally witnessed at nearby peer clubs. Physiologically, the Bent and Bermuda grasses are near polar opposites with Bent being a cool season C3 plant and Bermuda being a warm season C4 plant. Therefore, one of the most glaring benefits of the new Ultradwarf Bermudas is that they provide a superior putting surface throughout the summer months when the golf program is at its most active participation level and Bentgrass greens are in their most vulnerable state. Also, over the past several years, the new Ultradwarfs have proven they can weather tough winters with turf covers being installed on really cold days, and the speed on non-overseeded dormant greens is also better than once thought. With everything that we have learned over the past several years regarding the Ultradwarfs that are now prolific in the area, it only makes sense that the Club move forward with this conversation and determine if Ultradwarfs might be a good fit here at Greensboro Country Club. When it is all said and done, it comes down to what the membership thinks is best for the course.

Work on the building site began the week following this year’s Member-Guest. The building will be constructed on the left side of the practice tee and will be a joint effort of Greensboro Country Club staff and local sub-contractors. Earl Wadell will serve as contractor for the Club on this job as he has on several previous construction projects. Utilities such as gas, electrical, water, septic and phone service will need to be extended to the new site. Existing infrastructure on the tee such as drainage and irrigation will need to be relocated and redesigned. The building itself will include two hitting bays, one of which will be equipped with the latest video teaching equipment technology as well as two restrooms that will be easily accessible to everyone on the range tee. I am sure once completed the membership will benefit greatly from this new Doug Lowe, CGCS Director of Golf Course Maintenance addition to the GCC golfing experience.
