President’s Message (336) 275-8506
November | December 2017
Dear Fellow Members,
changing our standards for membership in any way and we will remain as an “invitation only” Club. Our Membership Director, Lori Frasier, would be delighted to speak with you about prospective candidates for membership and about the details of the new campaign.

You continue to provide our Club with terrific ideas and valuable comments and your work is very much appreciated by the Board of Directors and our Club staff. Thomas C. Watkins President As you know from earlier newsletters and other communications to our membership, our ability to attract new members to GCC is critical to our longterm success. In recent years, we have been losing Table of Contents members on a net basis, which is not a healthy trend for any organization. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since Gail Bernstein asked me if I would serve as Membership Chair for our Club. Let me assure you that I was certainly hesitant! Not only was I concerned about the time commitment to perform all the duties required, but I would be following in the footsteps of Monty Hagler (who did an incredible job serving as Chair). But, who can say no to Gail?
families. Ross Harris, your next Membership Chair, and I have been working with the Membership Committee to propose a membership drive to our Board of Directors, which we hope to roll out in November. Ross, a current Board Member, will be an excellent ambassador for membership at GCC, and I am confident she will serve our Club well as Membership Chair. As always, please let me, Ross Harris, the Membership Committee, or Membership Director Lori Frasier know if you have any questions regarding our current initiatives, how someone can become a Club member, or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member.
Now that my term is coming to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible opportunity and experience it has been to serve GCC in this capacity. I was able to meet so many new members and their spouses or significant others, visit or reconnect with their sponsors, and get to know our truly special and talented Club employees on a different level. I’ve been Matthew Rankin, Chairman fortunate to work with our membership committee, Membership Committee who are passionate and dedicated, to try and shape policy where needed, and balance our marketing efforts with the structure of our membership-by-invita- Welcome New tion only club. We have committees representing every aspect of our Club, from Food & Beverage (a personal favorite) to Entertainment, Fitness, Grounds, and all of our sporting venues. If you haven’t considered joining a committee, I would encourage you to investigate an area of our Club that interests you and learn how you might get involved to share your input. It is no secret that, today, membership trends at all country clubs are facing strong headwinds, and our Club is no exception. Since January, we have accepted 32 new members (of which three were reinstatements), yet received 43 resignations for a net loss yearto-date of 11. This year will mark the 11th year in a row of net annual losses in membership. Financially, GCC is strong. However, we need to stay competitive and position ourselves for the future by incentivizing young

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, As we say goodbye to 2017 and welcome in 2018, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible year we have had. We brought many new and refurbished amenities to both campuses to provide you with fresher and more appealing facilities. We completely remodeled the Farm campus from head to toe, which took most of the year to complete and with great appreciation from many. We now have a full functioning wedding venue complete with a Bridal Room, brand new furniture, beautiful views of our Farm greens and more televisions for your game watching obsessions at our elegant and modern bar! Since remodeling the Clubhouse we have seen many more people attend our Thursday Night Buffets and Sunday Brunches.
November | December 2017
We converted the greens at the Farm, despite the 19” of rain we received over the summer, to bring you a completely different golfing experience. Our Teaching Pavilion at the Farm is a must-see, unique building which draws many to our state-of-the-art facility. At the Irving Park Clubhouse, we opened our minds to what members wanted and created Kids Corner and remodeled the Pavilion to accommodate kids of every age, built a nursery and kids arcade which has been incredibly popular with kids and their parents. Over the summer we did a small renovation in the Boardroom and added technologically advanced audio visual capabilities, installed new carpeting, wallpaper and lighting. This is your perfect new meeting destination or locale for an intimate business dinner. To afford you a sense of how we did in 2017 at both of our Clubhouses, we had 2,100 events between Irving Park and the Farm, served 75,000 Members and Guests, served 5,000 bottles of wine, hosted 12 weddings and served 1,750 people since the Farm Clubhouse reopened in February. Financially speaking, the country club industry is flat across the nation and has not seen any significant growth since before the recession. To combat the slump, remain open and offer you the best amenities possible at competitive pricing, we look at the state of the economy, growth in the city of Greensboro and the current membership trends at the surrounding clubs and at our own Club, then we make adjustments that make sense for our membership and our Club. Chambers helps us with these efforts and as we continue to work with them on our Strategic Plan for
Page 4
Greensboro Country Club, we will keep you apprised of what’s coming in the future. We are now midway through this process with Chambers, and we have analyzed the surveys you have taken and we are developing strategic tenets. As always we value your feedback and comments so please continue to communicate your experiences to me and our Department Managers. We are now in the midst of the Club’s busiest time of the year. We look forward to hosting you and your friends and families at our traditional Halloween Hayride, Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Christmas Buffet, Holiday Gala and Breakfast with Santa! We know you love these events so be sure to call the Reception Desk to make your reservations early. I wish you and your families a safe and healthy holiday season. Kind Regards,
Robert Lesinger General Manager/COO
GCC Mission Statement To be the premier Country Club in the Triad by providing a full range of outstanding dining, recreational and social opportunities for our Members, their families and guests in exceptional settings at both the Irving Park and Farm campuses.

Dear Members, With the fall season quickly approaching we’re certain to get some colder weather, fortunately for us the new season will also offer a new selection of ingredients that will be featured by the GCC culinary team. In the Family Grille and Sunset Dining Room you’ll find new menus featuring these ingredients as well as more local meats, seafood and produce than ever before. One company in particular is our new local mozzarella company, Siano. Located out of Charlotte, Siano uses 100% Italian buffalo milk and traditional preparation methods to produce the best mozzarella products (Mozzarella Di Buffala, Burrata, Stracciatella) I’ve tasted. Stracciatella (or the inside of the Burrata) will be featured on our Sunset menu in the form of a Fall Caprese that will also feature salt-roasted beets, persimmons, prosciutto and basil.

Golf Update The Golf Program has had a spectacular summer! Not only has the Farm course reopened to rave reviews, we have had many other things to be excited about! Robbie Fritz, Director of Instruction, has been here just over three months and you have warmly welcomed him to our GCC family. He has been busy helping many of you, and if you haven’t seen him, please schedule some time by calling the Farm Golf Pro Shop. Operation 36 is off to a great start with 13 juniors in our inaugural semester. This new approach to teaching junior golfers the game is developing players that are learning all aspects of the game so they will play better golf their entire lives. Investing in the next generation of players is something with which to get easily excited!

The Teaching Pavilion at the Farm has been well used for practicing in the shade (undercover) and for golf instruction in the teaching bay. Our TrackMan launch monitor and video equipment has been getting plenty of use. Whether out to play a round or practice, please let a Professional Staff member give you a tour of the facility.
The new chipping/pitching green at the Farm and the improved practice bunkers have also been well received. This area is a great place to work on the shots that can equate to 50% of the total shots taken during a round. Bud Taylor, PGA Director of Golf
Page 16
“Thinking vs. Doing” This instructional tip was inspired by a student that made me smile after mishitting a shot and saying, “that was a thinker and not a doer.” As golfers we have all experienced what it is like to have too many swing thoughts on the golf course. Excessive “how to” thoughts can over load us causing our movements to be uncoordinated. The fix is to play golf with pictures, images and feels while saving the thinking for the appropriate times during and after the round. During your pre-shot routine it is perfectly okay to be thoughtful and analytical when checking the lie of the ball, the distance, the wind, etc. However, once you step into the shot it is best to only let positive feels and images enter your mind. For example, there is a big difference between feeling the pressure shift between your feet and recreating that feel as opposed to verbally thinking or telling yourself “how to” shift. I’m also reminded of a quote from Bob Toski and Jim Flick’s book, “How to Become a Complete Golfer” which is, “you, the golfer must be both mechanic and driver, but not at the same time.” In other words, you can’t drive a car and fix it at the same time so when you are on the golf course don’t swing the club and try to fix it at the same time. Pull the car over and come to a complete stop before fixing it or go to the practice facility after your round to work on your swing and take a lesson. If you would like to schedule a lesson with one of our Golf Professionals, please call the Farm Golf Shop at (336) 288-4470. Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Fall Golf factor into the decision of covering and uncovering. An average range of days covered in our region will be somewhere in the 12-20 days covered throughout the entirety of the winter season.
The Irving Park greens were aerified in late August and have long since recovered with speeds that we expect to maintain near 11 feet for the foreseeable future. Mowing heights on the warm season grasses have been raised slightly to strengthen the plant prior to everything going dormant after the first few frosts, The autumn season also brings with it the senescence which typically arrive in late October. of leaves on the numerous hardwoods located across each of Club’s two courses. Typically, courses that go through these types of conversions begin to see firmer surfaces and faster speeds somewhere around the middle part of the summer, one year after the greens were originally planted. The remaining changes to hole numbers 5 and 14 and the new improvements to the short game area have also been received very favorably. These improvements, in addition to the new Golf Learning Pavilion, are all clear examples of the Club’s on-going commitment to the golf program here at GCC. One last thing to mention is the new Ultradwarf greens will need to be covered this winter. A very general rule Douglas Lowe, CGCS of thumb is to cover when nighttime temperatures are Director of Golf Course and Grounds expected to drop below 25 degrees. The fall golf season has arrived, bringing in some really good golfing weather. Fall’s more moderate weather conditions usually provide for some of the best golf course conditions of the year. That certainly seems to be the case this year with both courses displaying some really enjoyable playing conditions in recent weeks.

Tennis Update As we move forward from the outdoor season to the indoor tennis season, I would like to thank you our GCC members for the support and participation during 2017. The success of our spring and fall Ladies Gate City, Men’s Night and our Socials was due to the reception of our Members and hard work of the tennis staff. The Junior Development Program in 2017 has had great growth and will continue to grow as we move into 2018. Our opening of our paddle tennis courts was an overwhelming success and the membership has been very excited about what will be offered with leagues and events in the near future…stay tuned! We are already brainstorming and preparing for new and exciting events next year. Thank you GCC members for your continued support of the Tennis & Paddle programs.

Tennis Reminders Appropriate Shoes for the Indoor Courts
The surface of the indoor courts at the Farm is a Neoprene rubberized court. Due to the expense of this surface, we would appreciate all members wearing the appropriate shoes when playing on the indoor courts this fall and winter. The appropriate shoes are flat-soled tennis shoes only, no running shoes and no cross trainers. Cross trainers and running shoes leave black marks that cannot be removed from this surface. Thank you for your cooperation in this manner.
Cell Phone Policy
Please note that use of cell phones is not permitted on the Indoor Tennis Courts. Please remember to turn off your phone before play.
Guest Policy
A guest must play with a member or a junior player or with the spouse of a member. The guest fee at Irving Park and the Farm is $5 per guest. Members and junior players must sign a guest fee ticket in the Tennis Pro Shop before play. In any calendar quarter, a member or junior player may not have more than a total of four guests at Irving Park and at the Farm. (Same guest only four times per calendar quarter.) Thank you for your assistance with these policies. We hope everyone enjoys the indoor tennis season.
