President’s Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Fellow Members, It is hard to believe that the Holiday Season is nearly upon us at GCC! This is an exciting time of the year for our Membership and our staff, and I hope that all of you will be able to enjoy much of what GCC has to offer throughout the holidays. I would encourage you to make your plans for special events at GCC now, while we still have good availability for dates and venue choices.

The greatest reward of serving as Membership Chair for our Club has been the opportunity to meet so many interesting perspective new members and their sponsors. As part of our due diligence process, the Membership Committee hosts a small reception to visit with individuals and their spouses or significant others to discover more about them and their families. These informal events are filled with laughter, conversations, and never fail to produce new friendships. I want to thank the staff, the Membership Committee, and every member who is supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. Please reach out to individuals who will appreciate, enjoy, and value all that our club offers. Without your invitation, nonmembers can’t experience our Club. Our growing membership means lots of new faces not only for members but for staff as well. Please remember to sign your tickets before departing from one of our many venues. Our staff is working hard to get to know all of us, and I ask for your patience as they do. Your signature will help in this regard and is important in being sure your bill is accurate when you receive it. Thanks for your cooperation and understanding! Please feel free to reach out to the membership Committee or Membership Director, Lori Price, with any questions or thoughts you might have!

Ross Harris, Chairman Membership Committee

Message from the Membership Director As we head into the fall and Holiday seasons, we expect to see a heightened interest by potential new members. Please continue to share with your coworkers, friends and neighbors what a great family you are a part of and bring them by to be your guest if they have not had the opportunity to experience something special here. Remember, for every new member you sponsor, you will receive one month’s operating dues credit equal to theirs. There are so many activities to be a part of, so share your enthusiasm! The best is yet to come! The Membership team is always on the lookout for those Members who would like to participate in helping new Members feel at home at GCC. Through our Ambassador Program, you could be paired with a new Member whom you might invite to join you at the Fitness Center for a class, on the tennis court, or for a round of golf. Introduce this new Member to others by having them join you at a GCC social sometime soon. Each time they walk through the door will build closer bonds for years to come. If you would like to participate, I would be happy to help coordinate! Thank you for being a part of the family of Membership at GCC! I look forward to seeing you around the Club. General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Members,

I have met so many members as I continue to visit all areas of the Club on a daily basis. I also travel between the Farm and Irving Park campuses, which is vitally important in identifying the culture of the membership and staff.

I will continue to make improvements and listen to the Membership. Please contact me with recommendations and ideas. Most of all, enjoy your Club.

When I first arrived at GCC, I drafted a 90-to-100-day transition document to review all departments and operations. While I will continue evaluating, I have now have begun implementing positive change. Some minor changes include how we do employee orientation or “on boarding.” Hiring staff is called talent acquisition, and we look for talent. The first 90 days are important for staff to understand service standards, processes, procedures and the traditional culture of GCC. Staff is shown around both locations in all departments and meets all department heads. We are even going back many years, as I have found several tenured employees have never seen the Fitness or Tennis Centers, Golf Courses, or even the Halfway House. We must go back to the basics to look to the future. Additionally, we have retained a trainer in the Food and Beverage department. The trainer has modified the North Star POS (Point of Sale) for ordering to the kitchen to improve efficiencies. She is assisting management on steps of service from beginning to completion. We anticipate great results, but understand training is ongoing and an everyday task. New servers will be identified with a special name tag and progress to the next step. We ultimately will brand everything for consistency in all departments.

Warm personal regards,

Members have found if they make a recommendation and it is feasible I will do it. For example, opening the pool in the summer for longer hours at night on the weekends.

Greensboro Country Club adopted a Strategic Plan with Board-approved initiatives which gives a road map for management to improve service, facilities, operational issues and more. The Strategic Plan differs from the “Master Plan.” The Strategic Plan is a list of things to be done to accomplish a set of goals. The Master Plan is the set of goals which need to be accomplished. The Strategic Plan covers all operations of the Club not just one department or aspect.

Have a safe and wonderful Holiday season!

Happy Holidays! Time is flying by and it's hard to believe, but by the time the December holidays are upon us I will be celebrating my six-month anniversary at the Club.

Also, we kept the pool open in the morning for AquaFit until late October, and open for those who swim laps. If is makes sense and we are able to do it, then great; if not, I will certainly give you an explanation and reason why we may not be able to accommodate the request. Our goal is to provide you and your families with memorable experiences.

Dear Members,

November | December 2018

Fall is here, and with the change of season comes another slate of new menu offerings at the Club. Two changes you’ll notice right away are in the Sunset and 1909/Family Grille dining rooms. While the Sunset menu gets refreshed with new features that focus on our in-house dry-aging program, fresh fish and locally sourced small plates, the 1909/Family Grill menu is where you’ll see the biggest changes. In preparation of the new menu we were able to spend a significant amount of time and attention surveying membership for direction on menu variety and selection. So, I’m very happy that we were able to put together what I feel is the best designed menu we’ve had to date. The hallmark of the 1909/Family Grill will be that its a member driven dining experience that features some of our best local favorites, as well as American classics and Club traditions. Thank you to all the members who took time to share their thoughts - they were much needed, and much appreciated.

Farm Dining Sunday Brunch Buffet

Sundays in November & December

11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. | Farm Join us every Sunday of the month for our Sunday Brunch Buffet. Our chefs will create a varying array of breakfast and lunch favorites each week in addition to the popular chef-attended omelet and waffle bars. Adults $20 | Children $8.50 | Children Under Four - Our Guests

Weekly Thursday Night Buffet

On an important operational note, the food and beverage team would like to make mention of the Club's 72-hour policy regarding customized takeout orders. Please know that the policy does not apply to restaurant menus, rather only customized banquets items that are not listed on the Sunset or 1909/Family Grille menus. Our mission in observing the 72-hour policy is to ensure the best-most consistent services we can, which will lead to better planning and execution of orders, as well as help us better manage the Club’s resources.

6:00 - 9:00 p.m. | Farm Join us every Thursday night as the Farm chefs create a wonderful buffet dinner with a new menu each week that mixes the best of new and creative dishes inspired by local seasonal ingredients with our existing Club favorites. Each month concludes with our Prime Rib Buffet on the last Thursday.

Out from behind the scenes the GCC culinary team has been making a BIG impact in the Triad community. On September 30th Reed Gordon, Chef De Cuisine at the Farm was featured in the 6 Degrees of Southern, Community Table dinner featuring some of the best chefs in the Triad. And, on September 22nd we had 12 chefs from the Club participate in the Tour de Chef fundraiser held by the American Culinary Federation. Many of the proceeds were immediately filtered back into community programs like the ACF’s Chef and Child foundation. Not only did we get great participation from the chefs, but we had the chance to see quite a few of members at these events too - so thank you!

Champagne Taittinger was established in 1931 by Pierre Taittinger on the foundations of ForestForneaux, itself established in 1734 and the thirdoldest wine producing house of Champagne. Taittinger is today proprietor of approximately 600 acres of vines among which are included parcels in the one hundred-percent rated villages of Cramant and Avize in the Cote des Blancs; and Bouzy, Mailly, Ambonnay and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. The Taittinger Estate is one of the three most extensive in the Champagne district, and the firm's major holdings in Chardonnay vineyards are the physical expression of the Taittinger philosophy and style.

GCC Junior Golf Academy Powered by Operation 36

76 junior golfers are participating in the fall semester of Operation 36! This is a tremendous turnout, as we have seen the program grow from 16 juniors to 76 Equitable Stroke Control As golfers, maintaining an accurate handicap is an in one year! This comprehensive program provides important element of the game. Recording all scores a long term road map for junior golfers to grow and played, whether 9 or 18-holes, is important to reflect excel in the game. your true ability. Many members use the United States Golf Association (USGA) GHIN app to record their own scores. This complimentary app is available in the App Store. You may also return your scorecard to either golf shop, and the Professional Staff will record your score.

November | December 2018

When recording your own scores, please make sure you are using Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). ESC is an adjustment of individual hole by hole scores (for handicap purposes) in order to make your handicap representative of your potential ability. Course Handicap Maximum Score 9 or less Double Bogey 10-19 7 20-29 8 30-39 9 40 and above 10 In addition, if you play 7-12 holes, you must post a 9-hole score. Golf Tip

Ladies Mountain Trip

Solid Contact

The ladies had a wonderful trip to the mountains. Even though the second round was rained out, everyone enjoyed the round at Grandfather Golf & Country Club as well as the camaraderie and fun!

One of the keys to solid contact that differentiates the tour players from us humans is the skill of hitting the ball first and the ground second. The first step to accomplishing this task is having the right picture or concept in your mind and then the next step is to practice it with feedback.

September 10 - 11, 2018

November | December 2018

When striking irons crisply off the turf, picture the club brushing the ground slightly on the target side of the golf ball. Practice this by placing two golf tees just outside the golf ball creating a line perpendicular to your target line. Take practice swings and pay attention to where the club brushes the ground in relation to your line of golf tees. To help you get the “brush” in the right spot make sure your body through impact is different than it started at address. This surprises some golfers, but if you returned your body into the exact same position at impact from where it started then it would be very difficult to get the divot on the correct side of the golf ball. At impact, your weight should be shifted more towards the target with your left knee and left arm more forward (towards the target) than where it started. A good way to feel this shift is to roll or bank off the inside of your trail foot on the downswing. Striking the “little ball” (golf ball) first and “big ball” (earth) second increases your chances of being green high with your approach shots. Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Winter's Return The month of December marks the end of fall, which always seems to be the shortest season of the year. I’m sure the leaves have been falling heavy for sometime now and by the end of the month the trees will be nearly bare. Throughout the months of November, December and January the teams at each place will blow, vacuum and haul away nearly 80 dump truck loads of leaves in an effort to clean the two courses of all the fallen debris.

still holds true for late season covering as the plant is much weaker towards the end of winter. Another general rule of thumb will be when we approach sub 15-degree temperatures, we will be pine strawing all the greens. As such, we will have 1500 bales held on reserve for us for a quick delivery. Pinestraw applications will stretch the amount of days the course will be closed by at least one on the front end and two on the tail end. As we have not done this yet it could be as much as two on the front end and three on the tail end.

September and October

While we felt like we had a good sense of moisture management last year, this year we will do everything we can to ensure greens are at field capacity prior to any long term covering. This year we took the mowing Winter Preparations A lot of people want to know what we learned from heights up 30-thousandths higher than last year prior our bad winter experience on the Ultradwarf greens in to dormancy. This year we also bought extra covers for 2018. The first thing is new greens are more sensitive what we feel are our five worst (shadiest) areas of the than established greens. The second thing is you can’t greens and we will be installing these in sub 20-degree rely on the weatherman when it comes to accurately temperatures in combination with spot pine straw predicting exactly how cold and how long any colder applications. than normal weather system will be when it finally I’m hoping for a normal winter this year but preparing settles in and eventually moves out. for another winter like we experienced last year That means we have to be extra conservative this and everyone is already talking about the "Farmers' year when deciding on the protective measures we Almanac" prediction, which is for another colder-thanenact for each weather event. We will lower our early normal season. season covering threshold to 23 as a lot of new research says the grass is better off early in the season Doug Lowe, CGCS if it can naturally harden off. November | December 2018

These months were especially hot this year with a lot of rain and cloudy weather, which yielded some difficult grass-growing conditions. The Farm Ultradwarf greens fared well through this period but the cloudy days yielded less than ideal growth. The Irving Park Bentgrass greens actually went backwards during this period, which is typically a period of ideal growth. While winterkill on Bentgrass is not a concern, the loss of a long fall root growing season does cause some concern. Hot, wet conditions during this time of year result in slower green speeds and a shorter spring 2019 root system, which can in turn result in a tough 2019 summer on Bent.
