Greensboro Country Club has entered a new era with the arrival of Robert Lesinger in the position of GCC's new General Manager/COO. Many of you met Robert at his reception last month and his article in this newsletter will give you an even greater insight into his background, expertise, style, personality and commitment to excellence which will drive our Club to even greater heights. Our great staff has already responded most positively to his team-oriented leadership philosophy and has accepted his challenge to make the member experience and value proposition at Greensboro Country Club among the very best in the country. I encourage you to take the opportunity to introduce yourself to Robert if you can catch him in his office, though your best bet will be to visit with him as he makes his rounds throughout the Club.

Membership Membership Message I want to thank all of those members who have been sponsors and endorsers for new members as a growing membership base is vital to the future of our Club. At the time of this writing, we have welcomed 23 new members year to date and our total membership count is 1,321. Please continue to promote our two-week trial membership for prospective members and their families to experience our Club during a time which is convenient for them. We have some very exciting upcoming events such as the Labor Day pool party, Silver Oak wine dinner, Joymongers Brewing Co. beer tap takeover at the Donald Ross Terrace, Oysters and Wine Night in the Ballroom, and the Halloween Hayride at the Farm (to name a few) that would provide an excellent opportunity for you to invite guests or their families to showcase the wide variety of activities at GCC. Over the last few months, we have received several inquiries regarding our Significant Other and dating policies and understanding the difference between the two. Simply put, to become a Significant Other the requirements include an application, endorsers, an interview by members of the Membership Committee and Board approval (please see full definition under Club Rules and Regulations on the website). Once approved, the Significant Other is granted full membership privileges (including enjoying all facilities unaccompanied by the Member).

General Manager's Message Dear Members, Thank you for such a warm welcome as I begin my career at Greensboro Country Club. I am extremely excited about moving to Greensboro and starting work for the breathtaking Greensboro Country Club. I can assure you that you will have my full efforts, loyalty, dedication and determination to make the Club a meaningful and memorable place for the Members for years to come.

To give you a little background, I am from Germany, where I finished Mechanical College in Stuttgart. While on vacation in Croatia, I met my beautiful wife, Murisa, and shortly after we were married. Together we traveled to visit a friend in Charlotte, North Carolina. We fell in love with North Carolina and the United States and decided to go back to Germany and pack our belongings to move to the United States. On February 16th, 2012, we completed the most inspiring accomplishment of our lives and were honored, thankful and extremely proud to become US citizens. While continually working to establish ourselves in the United States, we had a son, Edi. He is a current high school graduate with plans to attend the University of West Florida in the fall.

I finished my Chief Operations Officer certification and dove into the Club Associations Industry. Learning from one of the best General Managers in the world at Charlotte Country Club, I gained invaluable leadership experience and an expansive understanding of country clubs. After nine years working at the Charlotte Country Club, I left North Carolina and moved to Florida to become the Chief Operations Officer at Pensacola Country Club. During my three years at Pensacola
Country Club, we formed an unstoppable team who produced a country club with new, respected and indispensable standards of excellence. I am looking forward to working for Greensboro Country Club's superior Membership and to working side by side with an excellent team. Together, I am confident we will bring new levels of brilliance to the Greensboro Country Club. With kind regards and tremendous respect,

Capital Project Update
Our maintenance team continues to make great strides in improving and updating our facilities this year. Most items are being done in-house, with the exception of specialty work such as plumbing and electrical, which has allowed for a substantial savings for the Club. The following is a brief summary of the progress we have made and the projects slated for the remainder of the year.
Roof Replacement
The shingles on the Farm Clubhouse roof and the single-ply roof surface on the IP Clubhouse have been replaced. In order to combat nature’s elements and ensure the longevity of both of the Clubhouses, this scheduled maintenance must be addressed every few decades, and is a normal course of action in maintaining both building’s integrity.
Capital Project Update [Capital Project Update Continued]
The former laundry room in the IP Clubhouse has been repurposed into a new bakery, which has freed up space in our existing kitchen while providing an adequate and safe workspace for our professional pastry staff. This work began in July, and is currently complete and operational. We hope you enjoy the sweet smells and delicious new treats we are now able to offer in our dining rooms.
Ladies Lounges
The existing lounges in the IP Clubhouse are being renovated. The ladies restroom on the lower level has not been updated since the Club was renovated in 1986. Therefore it is receiving a much-deserved face-lift. This ladies restroom is receiving a complete makeover with a new floor, wall coverings, partitions, counter-top and sinks. On the main level, the tile and counter-top has been replaced in the ladies lounge, and the existing furniture is being refurbished. Once complete in September, you will notice new accessories and a fresh new atmosphere in both of our ladies lounges.
Paddle Tennis
The Paddle Tennis craze is sweeping the nation! We are excited to announce that we are currently building two paddle tennis courts at Irving Park. Construction began August 19th and will be complete the first week of September. We have scheduled a date for the grand opening and exhibition with national paddle tennis player Mike Rahaley on Friday, September 23rd from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. With the ability to play in the winter as well as the summer, this will be a great new sport for GCC.
Renovation of Farm Clubhouse Interior
In order to provide a more welcoming and functional interior space at the Farm, we will be renovating the interior of the Clubhouse. The bar will be relocated to the interior wall across from the fireplace and updated to create a more organic gathering and social area. Retractable glass will be installed on the exterior wall, allowing for beautiful panoramic views of the Donald Steele golf course, in addition to opening the room for unimpeded access to the back porch. This will allow for indoor-outdoor Club events and entertaining with a new character. The interior of the Clubhouse will be updated with a wood dance floor, and new wall coverings, carpet, draperies and seating. We anticipate completion of this project at the end of the year. Please note that all work will be done in phases so that Members will be able to continue to utilize the Farm Clubhouse.
Golf Teaching Facility at the Farm
The Club will be adding a new golf teaching facility at the Farm driving range. This new building will have three hitting bays: one for instruction with state-of-the-art technology (the latest golf ball launch monitor and video assessment equipment available), and the other two for Member use. This new facility will provide year-round access for Members to practice and hone their golf game. The facility will also house a club repair room and bathrooms. This project will begin in October and is scheduled to be completed in early 2017. More information will be available once we begin this project.

Special Events From the Chef We have had a great summer at the Club! Our summer season was very productive with the opening of our new bakery where we will be producing all of our freshly baked desserts and pastries for both campuses. We are now able to produce specialty cakes, and will also be offering custom wedding cakes for events at the Club. Pastry Chef Lucia Bobby and Keefe Fillerup will be offering two pastry cooking classes this fall so you can come see our new space and create your own pastry delights.

I would like to welcome a new member to our team, Family Grille Sous Chef Reed Gordon. Reed most recently worked at Lucky 32 and has worked throughout all three Weaver properties over the past eight years. Reed will be working with Chef de Cuisine, Ron Gordils, and the rest of the Family Grille culinary team to keep things fun and fresh.
Donald Ross Terrace Hours of Operation The Donald Ross Terrace will operate normal hours through September 5th (Labor Day). After Labor Day, it will be open Friday and Saturday evenings for pizza and “shareables” (weather permitting). The Bar will be open from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. and the food menu will be available from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. We will feature live music every Friday night through September.

It's finally fall, and I'm sure we are all looking forward to putting those steamy temperatures behind us. Our fall schedule is now in place at Irving Park:

USTA Junior Team Tennis
GCC is preparing for the USTA Junior Team Tennis this 2016 fall season. This league gives our juniors a chance to compete against other junior players of their ability throughout the city in a team format. Teams will compete in the age groups of 10-Under, 12-Under, 14-Under and 18-Under team competition.

Once registration is complete, the GCC professional staff will place our GCC juniors on appropriate teams according to ability and will be notified to what team will be a part of the first week of practice. Matches and team practices will begin the first week of September. Matches will be played on Friday afternoons throughout September and October. Please note that juniors will need a current USTA Membership to participate in team competition. The GCC Tennis Staff hopes to see your child as a USTA Junior Team Tennis participant this fall!

Golf Golf Update
Putting
The summer is moving along faster than a Bubba Watson tee shot! The Golf Program has been in full-swing with the junior golf program, tournaments and special events.
Since my arrival last September, many members have scheduled lessons to work on their putting. Through these lessons and listening to members describe their overall play, the first question one should ask when analyzing how they are putting is how close to the hole they are hitting their approach shots.
Junior Golf
This summer we have seen a record number of juniors participate in the summer camps. We have had both “golf only” camps and “all sports” camps. The emphasis is on fun, fine tuning motor skills and then translating that into swinging a golf club. The juniors have responded positively to it and we are excited for the fall clinics and activities. The clinics are paying off for many of our juniors, as we had fantastic play in the Junior Club Championship. Championship week was full of golf, basketball games, a movie night (thank you Kevin Carlock), corn hole games, a contestant dinner with a press conference, post-round interviews and a post celebration pool party. Congratulations to all of our juniors for participating.

Caddies at GCC
It has often been said that the most enjoyable way to play a round of golf is to walk with a caddie. That opportunity is coming to GCC through the use of hands-free robotic caddies. These robots, called Rovers, allow the golfer to enjoy the game walking with the Rover following safely behind. With the switch of a small transponder worn on the back of your belt, the Rover uses state-of-the-art sensor technology and wireless transmission to follow along. The Rover also carries sand bottles (for filling divots), a small cooler and a GPS devise that will provide measurements on each hole to the front, middle and back of the green. Your professional staff will provide a brief tutorial on the use of the Rover. They are very simple to use and will provide added enjoyment to the game for those that use them.
A jump off the page data point from the PGA Tour is every putt a tour player makes from 25 feet they will 3 putt from the same distance an equal amount. The best putters in the world 3 putt from 25 feet as often as they make putts from 25 feet. So if you are hitting greens in regulation outside of 25 feet and 3 putting a handful of times it may not be how you are putting that is causing the extra putts, but how you are hitting your approach shots. Another jaw dropping statistic related to PGA Tour players is they make 50% of eight foot putts. From eight feet they make as many as they miss. Pause for a moment and think about how many eight-foot putts you make and you may not be far off from the best putters in the world. Finally I will leave you with what Nick Price used to say all the time, "the better I drive it the better I putt." Call the Farm Professional Shop to schedule a lesson. Shotgun Starts | Farm Open to all GCC Lady Golfers – This annual two-lady team event with better ball between the two partners format will begin in a 9:00 a.m. shotgun for our 18 hole division then joined by our 9 hole contingent at 11:00 a.m. The field will then assemble for an awards luncheon together. Junior Golf Junior Stroke Play Club Championship Part of this year’s excitement was the inaugural Junior Match Play Championship. The juniors were all in one division, with juniors teeing off from different yardages depending upon age. The inaugural event was won by 10 year-old Charlie Plate! Charlie outlasted 17 year-old Thomas Mayes in the final to capture his first Junior Club Championship title. In the Stroke Play Junior Club Championship, Tatum Neff defended her title as the Girls Overall Champion with a 88-86 = 174 total for 36-holes. And Nick Poole won his first Junior Club Championship Boys Overall title firing an impressive 4 under par total of 67-71 = 138 total for 36-holes.

Turf Talk Summer Course Conditions

I am pleased to report that both courses are doing well with the exception of a few small areas on a limited number of greens that give us trouble every year. Most golfers from this area know that green speeds on courses with Bentgrass greens slow down during the peak summer months but most don’t really understand as to why. The are several basic reasons with the first being a management decision to raise the mowing heights up slightly when we enter into what we think will be a prolonged abnormally hot period of weather. The second is the humidity during the hot summer months often results in a more succulent plant that yields a sticker putting surface and a plant that is much more susceptible to disease activity. The last big reason is the Bentgrass plant is a cool season plant and as such the roots begin to dieback each year when soil temperatures exceed 77 degrees. With July of 2016 being the second hottest July on record, we reached the 77 degree threshold very early in the month and have witnessed significant root dieback ever since. As of the end of July, healthy roots were very hard to find and the few that did exist were well below an inch in length. This is down from the peak roots in May that are prolific and typically 4-6 inches in length. With that said, history shows that if we manage everything perfectly we can generally get through the worst summers with only minor damage. But to do so requires not only experience and dedication from the staff but also a little bit of patience and understanding from the golfers as well.
While a good portion of our manpower during the summer months is spent maintaining the greens and the course as a whole, this is also the time of the year we try to make improvements as well. This year we installed over an acre of

new sod on the Irving Park course to finish out a few repairs that were deferred from the winterkill in 2015 and to clean up some of the areas where trees were removed this past winter. On the Farm course, we installed around a quarter acre of sod in an effort to repair a few worn or damaged areas. The Farm has also installed close to 1,400 linear feet of new French drainage on holes 9, 12 and 16. We hope to continue adding more drainage before the end of summer on holes 1, 3 and 8. Drainage on a golf course is seemingly a never ending necessity and our drainage plan attempts to prioritize the worst areas on the course and breaks them out into multiple years based on funding limitations. Both courses underwent cultivation on the tees and fairways this summer with the Farm course fairways undergoing two aerifications. As good a grass as Zoysia is to look at and play off of, it is equally as difficult to manage to a high standard. Although it is known as a slower growing grass than Bermudagrass, it produces thatch at a much higher rate than Bermudagrass. If the thatch level is not managed it will result in poor drainage, higher disease susceptibility and a grass that becomes puffy and difficult to mow at lower heights. As the grass is very slow to recover from verticutting, and topdressing with sand is not affordable, an aggressive aerification program is our only option to manage unwanted thatch. Greens will be aerified August 29th & 30th on the Irving Park Course and September 12th & 13th on the Farm course. This is done to relieve stress and promote new root growth during the critical fall growing season. We do this as early as possible to provide the membership with the best possible fall playing conditions. The rough mowing heights went up in late August to ensure good winter definition and increase winter hardiness. Player-friendly mowing heights are maintained nearly nine months out the year. Depending on rainfall, the membership should expect more "tournament like" playing conditions during the fall golfing season, especially on the Farm Course. There is a lot of passion and enthusiasm about college football this time of year. Is your team the one with the most spirit? We plan to find out which college actually does have the most spirit for their football team. Every time you wear your favorite team logo into the Fitness Center during the month of September you will be entered into a drawing for a team logo tailgating chair. We will have six major college teams in NC represented and a single category for all other college teams. The more you workout, the more you could get your name in the drawing being held on October 1st. Let's see your spirit!
Everyone Needs a Little Motivation…Right?
New to the Club? Never been to the Fitness Center? We want to see you! Beginning September 1st, when you come into the Fitness Center or try a group exercise class for the first time ever, stop by the reception desk to receive a special GCC Fitness gift. And, if another member brings you in to try us out for the first time, they will receive the same gift as well. We are looking forward to seeing all of the newly motivated faces!
Teen Orientations
All 13 to 15 year-old teens will now be able to earn the ability to utilize the Fitness Center without being accompanied by a parent! We invite all teens to join us in the Fitness Center! By simply attending two consecutive Fitness Center Orientation sessions, teens can earn a junior fitness badge that will allow them to utilize Fitness without being accompanied by a parent. Orientation sessions will be held Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. starting September 7th (some dates may be excluded). Required orientations will be offered consecutively throughout the month on the first and second Wednesday of the month and the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month. The $30 fee includes both sessions. Teens who have not attended both consecutive sessions will not be allowed access to the Fitness Center unaccompanied, so be sure to sign up by calling the Fitness Center at (336) 6915825.
