Time for Some Summer Fun!

President’s Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Fellow Members, It is hard to believe that summer is gone and that it’s time for back-toschool, college football and the Carolina Panthers! So, let’s take a look at some of the things that happened at GCC while the summer flew by: The biggest project of the summer was our conversion of the Farm course greens to Ultradwarf bermuda. The Farm reopened on schedule on August 16, and I hope that many of you were able to attend our grand re-opening event at the Farm, which included a Sunday afternoon chat with noted golf writer and Greensboro native Jim Dodson. The Farm now has the best greens anywhere around and our upgraded practice facilities are there to improve your game. You have no excuse for not lowering your handicap! If you haven’t enjoyed the “new” Farm course yet, I hope that you will be able to do so soon. It is clearly a facility of which we can all be very proud. Please thank our Director of Golf, Bud Taylor, and our Director of Golf Course and Greens Maintenance, Doug Lowe, when you see them for all they did this summer to make the Farm conversion a successful and timely reality.

September | October 2017

The Donald Ross Terrace was a big hit and a wonderful amenity again this summer. We had plenty of music and some attractive dining options (Music, Modelo and Margarita Nights @ $5.00!) that, based on attendance, were very wellreceived by our members. If you see Chef Shayne, please don’t hesitate to thank him for the excellent menu that we were able to enjoy at the DRT this summer as a direct result of his culinary talent, which we are starting to see at all of our dining venues. Also, please take a minute when you can to thank our staff for all they did during the summer to make the DRT such an enjoyable outdoor dining experience. Our summer youth programs seemed to have delivered big time for our children and grandchildren. Our Blue Dolphins and their families had a great experience together and enjoyed a fast-paced summer of competition on the water, finishing undefeated in the regular dual meet season and enjoying a good showing in the City Meet that should position us well for next year. Our youth golf championship was very well received and masterfully run by our golf professional staff (especially the priceless online “interviews” with our winners!). Congratulations are definitely in order to all involved for a bunch of hard summer work that really paid off!

From a staffing standpoint, Michelle Lunney our new Chief Financial Officer, and Lori Frasier, our new Membership Director, both continue to settle in as key members of our management team. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself or just say hello when you see either of them on campus and thank them for being an important part of what it takes to keep GCC running smoothly. As we move into the fall, your Board of Directors will be gathering for a fall retreat at the GCC facilities (not an offcampus boondoggle!) to review the recently completed member survey and to work on our Strategic Plan for the future. We thank everyone who participated in the survey (we received responses from a very good cross-section of our membership) and shared their ideas with us. We look forward to reporting back to the membership soon with the Board’s reactions to our survey results and your comments (thank you for being candid!) and with our recommendations for a Strategic Plan and related initiatives for the future. This will continue to be structured as a memberdriven process, so please continue to share your ideas with any member of the Board or our staff as our Strategic Plan is discussed and developed and as we consider action steps for capital improvements and other enhancements at the Club. Your input is vital to our efforts in this regard. After the fall comes the holidays and we expect to have a very full calendar at GCC during the holiday season. Please start your seasonal planning now so that our staff can reserve our facilities for you and help you plan that special event. We are anticipating holiday sell-outs at many of our venues, so we encourage you to book your functions now, while we still have good date and time availability. We want no one to be disappointed! We are looking forward to our fall and winter calendars at GCC and we are excited about the Club experience that our staff is looking forward to delivering to our membership. I hope to see you enjoying our facilities soon. Sincerely yours,

Thomas C. Watkins President

Membership

The greatest reward of serving as Membership Chair for our Club has been the opportunity to meet so many interesting perspective new members and their sponsors. As part of our due diligence process, the Membership Committee hosts a small reception to visit with individuals and their spouses or significant others, and discover more about them and their families. These informal events are filled with laughter, conversations, and never fail to produce new friendships. I want to thank the staff, the Membership Committee, and every member who’s supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. Through July, we have welcomed 25 new members and their families. This momentum has unfortunately been offset by 31 resignations and one death. Please reach out to individuals who will appreciate, enjoy, and value all that our Club offers. Without your invitation, non-members can’t experience our Club. We’re working on providing more venues like the Music, Margarita and Modelo night, where Members can invite perspective members and experience the vibrancy of our Membership. As a reminder, we have several initiatives that will expire at the end of this year: a Legacy trial membership (six months) for those under the age of 40; a 2-week “guest” membership for prospective members (as a way to experience our Club when convenient); and an initiation fee that is amortized over 10 years and is interest free. Please let me, the Membership Committee, or Membership Director Lori Frasier know if you have any questions regarding our current initiatives, how someone can become a Club member, or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member.

General Manager's Message (336) 275-8506

Dear Members, Labor Day marks summer’s end and the arrival of autumn. It has certainly been a very hot, active and glorious summer here at Greensboro Country Club and we have much to be proud of. Please join us for our End of Summer Bash on September 15th. We will present summer appetizers, rosÊ slushies, a member-sign bar and entertainment by Liquid Pleasure. Our greens at the Farm were converted and although our Farm course was closed for a number of months, we feel the wait was worth it. We know you avid golfers will enjoy the new greens and your games will improve dramatically. If your game is still less than desired, call the Golf Shop to book a few lessons with our new golf teaching pro, Robbie Fritz. If you would like to learn more about our greens conversion and the many benefits of our new grass, please read Doug Lowe's blog at http://douglaslowe.blogspot.com. We invite you to come to the Farm, play a round and get a feel for the new surface. While at the Farm, please enjoy the Thursday night buffet, have lunch or Sunday brunch which is relished by many!

September | October 2017

We recently remodeled our Boardroom and we are very proud of this incredible transformation. We present a beautifully updated and elegant space for your next dinner or lunch meeting complete with a Smart TV for your presentations. Please speak with Samantha Brookshire at extension 171 in our events office to book this delightful room for your next event. Our Blue Dolphins Swim team made a huge splash and was undefeated this season, and what a terrific swim season we had featuring our new swim coach, Frances McEachran. We are so proud of our swimmers, coaches, lifeguards and the Swim Committee for doing an outstanding job this season. We saw many adults and kids enjoying themselves and frolicking outside at the pool. Nikki Ludwig, our Communications Director, has been very busy with some new technologies to expand our member communication touch points. We launched our new website which has an elegant look and feel we know you will love. Our new mobile app will enable our members to book a tee time, book a table in the Sunset Room, see what events are happening at the Club, feature push notifications and allow

a one-time sign in. We are excited to be offering you more ways to make your lives more enjoyable at the Club and the mobile app will facilitate this. I want to personally thank each and every one of you for filling out our member survey. The main purpose for the survey was to obtain your feedback on what you enjoy at the Club and what you want us to offer you in the near future. The member feedback is going to Chambers USA, who we partnered with for both the Boardroom remodel and the member survey. We look forward to a long standing relationship with the award-winning Chambers group. If you did not have the chance to fill out the member survey, please feel free to speak to me in person in the coming weeks. I welcome your feedback about both of our Clubhouses and outdoor amenities. The fall season is right around the corner and there is much to look forward to. October will bring our famous Halloween Hayride at the Farm on October 27th. It is not too early to plan ahead for this coming holiday season either. The events team is ready to book your events at Irving Park or the Farm. Please do call early as we are already booking holiday parties, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and much more. Thank you again for all of your donations and cards for John Centore. He is overwhelmed by your kindness and well wishes for his speedy recovery. Kind Regards,

Robert Lesinger General Manager/COO

The Farm Course Is Open!

There is tremendous excitement about the course reopening, and in such fantastic shape. A huge thank you to Director of Golf Course and Grounds, Doug Lowe, Farm Course Superintendent, Brooks Turner, and their staff for their tireless effort with the renovation process!

“We are Talking About Practice!” Is it frustrating that you can hit the ball well at the practice facility, but it doesn’t seem to transfer to the golf course? A slight modification in the way you practice will help improve your next round of golf.

Did You Know…

The most common way to practice is known as block practice. Block practice involves hitting multiple shots from the same spot at the same target with the same club. A math example of block practice would be if you were studying for a math test and you kept repeating, “what’s 2+2? = 4.” “What’s 2+2? = 4, etc.” Block practice typically results in lots of good shots and it raises expectations for your next round of golf. However, because this type of practice doesn’t simulate actual play on the golf course it isn’t always the best in terms of long term retention and transfer.

Adult Participation for the Junior Club Championships

A harder, but more effective way for you to practice your golf is to do random practice. Random practice involves changing clubs and targets every shot. Warning: when you do random practice you will likely mishit more shots on the range when compared to your normal block practice sessions. It is much harder to change targets and clubs every shot. However, research shows that because this type of practice better simulates actual play on the golf course it will transfer better to your next round of golf. I think we would both agree that the goal is to reduce missed shots on the golf course.

It was supposed to be the easiest of all the projects but on day one we hit a large solid slab of bedrock.
