Greensboro Country Club September | October 2018
President’s Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Fellow Members, In 2017, GCC engaged Chambers, a nationally recognized firm that focuses on planning for the private club industry, to assist the Board of Directors in developing a comprehensive Strategic Plan that would set out a strategic vision and roadmap for the future of GCC. This planning process included industry research, a market study of the Greensboro area, professional insights from Chambers into trends in the private club industry, and detailed discussions with the Chambers team. We also conducted member focus group sessions and a targeted membership survey that were designed to give our membership an opportunity to speak up and provide input on their levels of satisfaction with the current GCC facilities and services and their desires for the future of our Club. Many of you participated in both the survey and the focus groups, such that we received a good representative sampling of member comments. Please know that this was a very collaborative process, and I want to thank specifically current directors Ross Harris, Monty Hagler, Matthew Rankin and Ted Tewkesbury for their service on our Strategic Planning Committee, as well as past presidents Gail Bernstein and Billy Nutt and former director and treasurer Jason Bohrer, who also served as Committee members.
September | October 2018
As a result of this planning process, the Board of Directors at its July meeting adopted a Strategic Plan for GCC. The Plan is intended to be a living document that will be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure that it serves as a relevant framework for the ongoing operation and structure of our Club and our planning for the future. An update on execution of the Strategic Plan will become a regular agenda item for our Board meetings. The Strategic Plan focuses on the following six areas: 1. Board Governance, Club Management and Staff Development. 2. Enhancement of Facilities within a Two-Campus Model and Financial Stewardship. 3. Membership Retention and Recruitment. 4. Recreational Experiences. 5. Dining and Social Experiences. 6. Communication and Brand Awareness. Within each area, the Plan prescribes detailed action steps that are designed to help ensure the implementation at GCC
Page 2
of best industry practices in the management and operation of a private club. A copy of the complete Strategic Plan will be made available on our website, where it may be accessed by all members. While we intend to move forward with implementation of all phases of the Strategic Plan, we are currently focusing in particular on initiative #2 – Enhancement of Facilities within a Two-Campus Model and Financial Stewardship. In that regard, we are working to address our facility needs, as identified in our membership survey and in the focus groups. The focus on our facilities is also driven in significant part by the age and condition of some of our existing assets, in particular our swimming pool and associated amenities at the Irving Park campus. We are now at a point in the planning process where we will be convening a series of Town Hallstyle meetings to update the membership on conceptual plans for improvement of our facilities and related financial considerations and to seek additional member input on our direction. Please know that no decisions have been made regarding any particular improvement and that no such decisions will be made until there has been ample opportunity for member input and ultimately member approval of any major facility renovations or improvements. Please watch for further communications on this important subject and please plan to participate in the planning process. We need to make some significant decisions that will have a major impact on GCC’s future for years to come, and in this process the Board very much needs feedback from our membership. We are also very pleased to have the Chambers firm working with us to provide guidance on best practices and developments within the club industry. We believe that their capabilities and access to information will be a very valuable continuing resource for us. I look forward to seeing you soon at the Club. We have a lot going on and lots of good reason to be very excited about the future of our Club. Sincerely yours,
Thomas C. Watkins President

Welcome fall! I hope you’ll take advantage of all the fun events the Club has planned for our members and their families over the next two months! The greatest reward of serving as Membership Chair for our Club has been the opportunity to meet so many interesting perspective new members and their sponsors. As part of our due diligence process, the Membership Committee hosts a small reception each month to visit with individuals and their spouses or significant others to discover more about them and their families. These informal events are filled with laughter, conversations, and never fail to produce new friendships. I want to thank the staff, the Membership Committee, and every member who is supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. Please reach out to individuals who will appreciate, enjoy, and value all that our Club offers. Please let me, the Membership Committee, or Membership Director Lori Frasier know if you have any questions regarding our current initiative, how someone can become a Club member, or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member.

Message from the Membership Director We have two great events coming up to celebrate membership at the Club. Our first event is to honor our 1909 Club Members. Those invited to this event have a combined membership tenure and age totaling at least 100. The 1909 Club event will take place on Wednesday, September 19th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Farm. Prior to the event, we are asking members to stop by the Membership Office with their old GCC photos for us to scan and share with the other members at the event. It will be a great way to reminisce! If you have any questions, please contact me at (336) 275-8506. Our New Member Mixer will be held at the Donald Ross Terrace on Friday, October 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All new members since January 2017 are invited to come out to the Donald Ross Terrace to meet and greet other new members and enjoy some time outdoors. Come out to make new connections, meet new friends and have a great time! Watch for details coming on your invitation in the mail soon! Lori Frasier Membership Director

General Manager/COO's Message (336) 275-8506
Dear Members, It is exciting to be writing my second newsletter article for GCC. As I mentioned in my first article, the first 100 days would be filled with observations and one-on-one interviews with Director-level staff, line staff and all Board members. These interviews allowed me to gain insight of the nuances and culture of GCC. I am not telling you anything you do not know but GCC is a very special place; the welcoming Membership, the feeling of community, and wonderful activities. There is a real spirit of inclusiveness. In addition to being supportive, my style is managing by walking around - people and paperwork in priority order. You can connect and have great informal conversations with all members in different venues and keep in touch finding useful information to make positive changes. On opening day at the Farm on July 28th, when greeting everyone with Bud, I gained tremendous insight.
September | October 2018
In the next few months I will implement some best practices in all departments, addressing processes and procedures to streamline efficiencies and standards. The staff at GCC is wonderful but I am finding many of the processes and execution to give exceptional service on a consistent basis are inhibited by antiquated systems and outdated policies. All of this takes time to identify, discuss, and ultimately change, though we are sure you will like the results. I look forward to a change of season, something I have not experienced for 12 years from living in Arizona! Please keep me informed, this is your Club and knowing of challenges and recommendations only make GCC a better place. It is the not knowing and telling others which hurt and hinder an operation. I am here and available. I look forward to seeing you enjoy your Club! Warm personal regards,
Terra S. H. Waldron, CCM, CCE General Manager/COO

Champagne Taittinger was established in 1931 by Pierre Taittinger on the foundations of Forest-Forneaux, itself established in 1734 and the third-oldest wine producing house of Champagne. Taittinger is today proprietor of approximately 600 acres of vines among which are included parcels in the one hundred-percent rated villages of Cramant and Avize in the Cote des Blancs; and Bouzy, Mailly, Ambonnay and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. The Taittinger Estate is one of the three most extensive in the Champagne district, and the firm's major holdings in Chardonnay vineyards are the physical expression of the Taittinger philosophy and style. $150 per person 72-Hour Cancellation Policy in Effect

Gary Player said, "There is more to read in the bunker than there is on the green." In the bunker you still have uphill, downhill and sidehill slopes. However, you also have different conditions and levels of firmness of sand. When you walk into the bunker be on the lookout for clues to help you gauge whether or not the sand is soft and fluffy or firm and hard. If you see a large trail the ball left as it rolled through the sand it is likely soft. If you see wide and deep footprints or wide doughnuts where balls have landed it is likely soft. When you walk you can feel and hear the sound of hard/ firm sand vs. soft/fluffy sand.
For soft fluffy sand try the following adjustments: Use a sandwedge with more bounce, open the clubface at address, and lean the handle slightly away from the target to add bounce and promote more glide. Since the ball will come out softer make a longer swing. For firm and hard packed sand: Use a lob wedge with less bounce, keep the face more square, and lean the handle slightly towards the target to create dig. On hard sand the ball will come out faster so make a shorter length swing compared to the soft sand. Robbie Fritz Director of Instruction

Fall Can't Get Here Fast Enough
September | October 2018
The summer of 2018 will surely be one to remember for everyone that is somehow related to golf here at GCC. The Golf Maintenance team was faced with a daunting scope of work early in the year and they met that challenge head on. The Farm course was closed on May 20th and re-opened on schedule on July 28th. The week before and the week after opening were very wet weeks with nearly 10 inches of rainfall recorded in a 13-day period that somewhat dampened our high expectations for a course that played closer to tournament conditions. While the Farm greens opened to a full and dense surface and good roll speeds, they are
Page 16
still very young and will only get better over time and we continue to groom the surface creating a firmer and faster conditions. All in all, the turnaround of conditions at both courses were seen by most as a successful endeavor. The late summer and fall golf schedule will be busier than normal due to the necessity of deferring certain events and the golf course maintenance team is looking forward to producing some really good playing conditions for these events.
