letter from the Associate Publisher Expand Your Horizons – Travel!
March is a month of transition, when the days become longer and the weather begins to warm, bringing with it a sense of renewal and growth. The world around us starts to come alive again, with brighter days and fresher air as we emerge from the cooler winter months. As the sun shines brighter and the days grow longer, we can look forward to the many activities surrounding our beach community.
At VIP Destin Magazine March is one of our busiest months, as people are eager to get out and participate in social events. I laugh to myself as I write that; February was a whirlwind of activity, and yet we know the next month will be even more hectic. In this issue, you will see that our team covered a variety of events, from Brunch Fest to the Emerald Ball. As we move through the next few weeks, our photographers will attend as many social gatherings as possible and we will end the month with our very own Black Tie Ball celebrating the winners of Best In Destin 2023.
As tourists plan their trips to visit us at the beach, I’m curious to know what many of you have planned for your annual travels. Obviously, we all go to different places for our vacations, so I’m interested to hear where you’ve been. Every adventure should leave you with great memories to share. Drop me a note if you have some good ones to share.
I eagerly anticipate the nal weekend of March, as it marks the start of my annual adventure motorcycle ride in the mountains. Every year, I travel to Tennessee to reunite with old friends and revel in the beauty of the mountains, streams, and forests. Riding on dirt roads and trails provides me with a unique perspective of the area, allowing me to witness and experience things that the average tourist would never come across. As I ride along, I can’t help but think of the classic Southern meals that await me at the local eateries nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. I know I won’t be losing any weight as I indulge in fried chicken, cornbread, and Memphis-style barbecue. As you plan your summer remember -- once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.
If you know of a non-pro t or charity holding an event you would like to see featured in VIP Destin Magazine, please call me. It was a magical scene at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, with gorgeous blooms and shades of emerald green filling the resort’s aptly-named Emerald Ballroom. The Emerald Ball, the annual event hosted by Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, took place on February 4 with dinner, music, dancing, and much more.
Dozens of guests dressed to the nines gathered in the ballroom’s foyer for cocktails and mingling before the dinner began. The event was black tie and attendees were encouraged to wear shades of green. Proceeds from this year’s ball are benefiting the acquisition of a state-of-the-art CT scanner for Pediatric and Adult patients at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach. This event is one of four major events organized by the foundation each year. The foundation was formed in 1984 to enhance the future healthcare needs of the Gulf Coast. According to their most recent annual report, foundation donors and fundraisers brought in nearly 40 million dollars between fiscal years 2017 and 2021.
Ellison McCraney Ingram FOUNDATION DINNER
Iin November 2021, 9-year-old Ellison McCraney Ingram came home from school the same as any other youngster would, however, after a walk with his dog he was rushed to the ER where his mom was told he had a bleeding-brain tumor. After being airlifted to University of Florida Health Shands Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery, sadly Ellison passed away.
Ellison’s parents had a passion for supporting children’s organizations in the area, and as a result of their example, family friends formed the Ellison McCraney Ingram Foundation (EMIF). On February 7, Marina Cafe hosted the foundation for their inaugural dinner fundraiser. “This is our first annual fundraiser, and we are grateful for everything Danny Bilger and his staff have done,” said Paul Barcus, President, EMIF. “We are hoping to raise a lot of money for the foundation and tonight we will be awarding three scholarships worth up to $40,000 each.”
As the host for the event, Marina Cafe donated the dinner, which included sauteed Gulf grouper and filet mignon. “We are honored to provide the meal for the foundation,” said Troy Klamerus, General Manager, Marina Cafe. There was a silent auction with items ranging from a namesake wine to a stay at an area condo. As the evening progressed, wishes and dreams came true when EMIF awarded its first scholarships to area seniors Kaleb Hollins, Caily Mitchell, and Gabriel Patterson.

story by Anna McGauley StocktonImagine this, you’re cruising on a yacht along the crystal-clear waters of Destin, shades on, drink in hand, being waited on hand and foot by an attentive staff. Well, imagine it no more, Holloway Yacht Charters is here to make that dream a reality.
Holloway Yachts is a dream all its own for owner Ryan Holloway. He grew up boating and always wanted a yacht to call his own. Ryan unknowingly laid the foundation for his company when he purchased his first luxury boat, a Sea Ray Sundancer. After thoroughly enjoying this boat and everything that went along with it, Ryan decided he’s “going to need a bigger boat” and purchased a Hatteras 45. A trip to the Miami Boat Show would further pave the way to realizing his potential in luxury yachting and building a business that would create an experience for others to enjoy yachting as well. He was living in Montgomery, Alabama at the time, yet memories of vacations in Destin navigated Ryan to decide on the Emerald Coast to be the home base of his new business, Holloway Yacht Charters.
Holloway Yachts now boasts a beauty of a vessel, their flagship yacht, Propensity, a Princess V72. This 75’ yacht has three staterooms along with three full bathrooms. With a sun pad, swim platform, and a central stereo system, there’s plenty of outdoor space to enjoy while the upper salon with a table and banquette has plenty of room to take the party inside. Princess Yachts are British luxury yachts known for their high-end materials, attention to detail, and unique layout. No two of their yachts are exactly alike.
Whether you want to tour around the area for a few hours, a full day, or just want to cruise around and catch one of the gorgeous Destin sunsets, Holloway Yachts has a trip option for you. Multiple-day and travel charters are also available for those who want to extend their luxury yacht experience. Each of these charters includes a Captain and crew, fuel, snacks, fruit, and of course, a champagne toast to kick off your cruise. To take your experience over the top, Holloway Yachts has partnered with private Chef Nathan Davis of Polished Chef 30A. The staff’s goal is for guests to be able to sit back and enjoy the views while they tend to your every need. Holloway Yachts’ motto is “If you ask for anything, we failed.” They stress to their staff to make sure your day is absolutely perfect and it will be one of the most memorable days of your life. Propensity is arguably the prettiest boat in Destin and many guests have proposed, celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, or just wanted a romantic or family day. The yacht has also hosted girls/ guys days out, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and weddings.
It’s up to the you on how you’d like to spend your charter and Propensity’s crew is more than happy to accommodate. You can cruise the gulf or the bay and then anchor along the beach or a secluded island for some peace and quiet. If you want to be part of the crab island party, our captain can anchor at Crab Island or have the yacht’s SeaDoo zoom you over to enjoy the island fun. A large variety of water toys, including a B inflatable floating dock will ensure you get the most water fun possible on your charter.
In 2022, Holloway Yachts expanded and now operates Craft Yacht harters, adding a yacht to the fleet. his month, they also added a 2023 31’ Sportsman center console. Adding to their expansion, guests may now also choose to fish or have a fun in the sun experience with a Crab Island specialty charter.
Owner Ryan Holloway, an USCG licensed Captain himself, his wife Heather, and their children make Holloway Yachts a family affair. Heather, an operating room nurse, and both children, students at Auburn University, are all hands-on deck at high season to help charters run as smoothly as possible ensuring everyone has the best experience. Their daughter is a Phi Mu majoring in law and justice and is planning a future in Homeland Security. Their son attends Auburn’s Honors College majoring in economics.
Ryan graduated from Auburn with a degree in finance and international business, continuing with his Masters in Finance. While Ryan is a 5th generation graduate from Auburn, Heather is a Troy alumnus. They are involved with their local church and the Auburn Club Board of Directors. The Holloway family believes firmly in keeping the area s beaches and harbors clean to leave the best environment for future generations to enjoy the waterways as they have.
Philanthropy is at the heart of the Holloway family. They are very involved with Alzheimer’s and ALS research as well as donating to Montgomery Catholic Prep, the school their children attended, to fund a scholarship for economically disadvantaged children to attend the school. Donating to local food banks is also a heartfelt cause they support. Ryan is a member of Tigers Unlimited, Auburn’s top athletics donor organization where he gives back to the university that has meant so much to his life and other generations of his family. He is also a trustee member in the Destin Chamber of Commerce.
Tarpon Beach Expansion Celebration
Areal estate transaction, negotiated by the nonprofit, Trust for Public Land, has brought three acres of prime beachfront property back into the public’s hands. To celebrate the event, commissioners, locals, snowbirds, and the Destin mayor gathered on February 3 to talk about how the purchase came about and the future plans for the Tarpon Beach Park.
In the fall of 2020, an interlocal agreement was established between Destin and Okaloosa County to improve beach access by purchasing parcels in Crystal Beach. Following that, another agreement was established in 2022 to purchase a parcel with almost 340 feet of access; the proposed Tarpon Beach Park parcel. “This is another example of the great partnership between the Destin locals and our county. Together we are buying back as much beach as we can,” said Mayor Bobby Wagner. He continued, “We now have another additional 300 plus feet of beach access for locals and all the visitors that come here.”
Since Okaloosa County’s sugar-sand beaches are such an attraction, and a legacy asset, the Tarpon Beach Park, along with future similar developments, will continue to be a priority for the county and local municipalities. “I believe that for generations to come, buying parcels like this and returning them to beach accesses is the highest and most productive thing we can do,” said Mayor Bobby Wagner.

Big events start with big dreams. In 2022, LaShana Chaisson Douville of The Event Room in Fort Walton Beach teamed up with her friend Felicia Scaif to host an event for community leaders that work behind the scenes. With the success of year one behind them, this dynamic duo set in motion plans for an even bigger second year. Held at The Event Room on February 17, this sold-out crowd enjoyed music and dancing, along with a catered meal by Southern Yankee Queen.
While Real Woman Radio covered the event and Kelsey Coffey (WEAR-TV, Channel 3 News) prepared to emcee, LaShana and Felica opened the formal program. “This event recognizes those who aren’t normally in the spotlight,” said LaShana. Since they are the ones normally behind the scenes, the nominees and winners were chosen by the community, without any influence or persuasion from the hosts. As the program progressed, Kelsey announced the winners. Trailblazer Awards were given to community leaders under 40 (Ta’ki Brown, Andre II, and Roshana Lynn), while the Woman of Influence Award included nominees over 40 with the community’s choice being Natoya Lane-Pitts
“Our hope is to continue and expand this event by collaborating with businesses and members of the community,” said Lashana. Events such as the Galentine’s Day Gala not only recognize people making a difference, but they also encourage others as well.

GRAND OPENING
Campus Life by Dr. Nan Liu
The Mattie Kelly Arts Center Galleries were packed with people on January 27, for the grand opening of the new exhibit Campus Life by Dr. Nan Liu. The exhibition included oil and Chinese-style paintings of Liu’s students at Florida A&M University. Liu, a classically trained Chinese painter and contemporarily trained portrait painter displayed his proficiency in both traits during the opening night event.
“As an artist, your subject is what is most important, what you choose to paint,” said Dr. Nan Liu during his artists talk. “Searching my surroundings, I see the students here; they are so colorful and upbeat and so full of energy. So that is how I started this series of oil paintings for Campus Life.”
After art enthusiasts perused the gallery, Nan Liu’s wife Dr. Haiqiong Deng played traditional Chinese tunes on the 27-stringed Chinese instrument the gu zheng. Following the musical repertoire, Liu talked about his oil painting techniques and then took the crowd into the adjoining gallery for a live demonstration of traditional Chinese painting. To round out the evening, Liu did a live portrait painting.
In his artist statement, Liu explained that Florida A&M University is an historically African American college and most of his students are African American. He said he is inspired by their youthful energy, bold colors, creativity, and sense of self and that is what he hopes to capture in his portraits.
“I try to alternate styles of art every January,” said Mattie Kelly Art Galleries Curator J. Wren Supak. “I wanted to honor black history month and I also wanted the faculty here to have different media to be able to teach from.”

story by Anna McGauley StocktonC
ognac has always had the reputation of being a bit stuffy, a drink for the upper crust of society to sip as they discuss their thoroughbred racehorses and whether they prefer their vacation home on Nantucket or the Hamptons. But times they are a changin’, and cognac is getting the attention it deserves for being a full-bodied, sophisticated drink, all thanks to most recently, ummmm, Busta Rhymes?
Cognac is in fact, a brandy, but a very specific one. Just as not all wine is champagne, not all whiskey is scotch, not all brandy is cognac. Brandy can not only be made anywhere in the world, but it can also be made using fermented fruits beyond just grapes, like apples, cherries, raspberries, and pears. Cognac, however, has strict rules to be worthy enough for its name. Cognac must be made in the Cognac region of France, more specifically, from the state of Charente, using grapes from that region as well. Most commonly used are the ugni blanc grapes. Wine made from these grapes is distilled twice then left to sit in French oak barrels for at least two years -- any less than two years and it cannot be called cognac. Once this process is over, the real fun can begin as some cognacs have special tasting committees. For example, a committee of seven people meet for two hours a day to taste samples of Hennessey Cognac and ensure consistent quality. It takes ten years of training before a person is allowed to be on this committee, and I would think part of this intense training is learning how to function for the rest of your day, once the sipping time is over.
Cognac distillers label their bottles based upon how long the products age in the French oak barrels. If you see VS on the label, that stands for “very special,” which means the cognac has aged two years in the barrel, the shortest amount allowed and still be called cognac. The VS cognac is better used in a mixed drink, rather than sipping alone. VSOP means “very special old pale,” and is aged for four years. This is also a good quality to be used with mixers but can stand on its own as well. If your label says XO, this means your cognac is “extra old,” aged over 10 years in an oak barrel. This is the best of the best and is also referred to as Napoleon. To mix this would be an abomination against cognac as it should be enjoyed neat or over ice.
Cognac’s history starts in the 16th century when the Dutch were frustrated that the wine they were bringing back home from France wouldn’t keep for the long journey. They decided to distill the wine and ended up with what they called brandewijn (burnt wine). This name morphed into brandy. By the 18th century, cognac houses started to pop up, with these houses buying only the grapes or brandy that fit their strict cognac standards. Cognac became very popular, especially with people in the UK, but high taxes on imports forced residents to take matters into their own hands and smugglers became the biggest importers at the time. In the 1870s an outbreak of phylloxera, an insect that attacks the vine root and kills the plant, nearly devastated the cognac industry. During prohibition, cognac saw a resurgence in demand with the popularity of drinks, such as the Sidecar and the Corpse Reviver. Cognac’s demand ebbed and flowed with the times but saw another large push when Busta Rhymes came out with the catchy tune Pass the Courvoisier, and thus cognac became popular with a whole new generation.

Fore Her Pink Walk
Many gathered at the Village of Baytowne Wharf on a sunny but cold morning to raise money for breast cancer. The Fore Her Pink Walk took place January 28, and saw participation from supporters of breast cancer research, families of those who have experienced the disease, and survivors themselves.
Runners and walkers, dressed in pink attire raced through Sandestin and returned to the entrance of Baytowne for their medals. Then it was time to celebrate! The after party took place in conjunction with the weekly Baytowne Farmer’s Market. Vendors for both events wrapped around the village center. Guests strolled through the area visiting booths, tasting snacks and trying beverages from vendors such as Black Rifle Coffee Company, Palm Folly Hard Seltzer, Charlie’s Cafe, and many more.
This is an annual January event. The proceeds go to support breast cancer patients in financial need on the Emerald Coast. The 5K kicks off the event, followed by the Survivors’ Stroll, and the afterparty.
Fore Her is a nonprofit organization that was started in memory of founder Amy Walsh’s mother and aunt, who both lost their battle with breast cancer. The organization originally began as a gathering of Walsh’s family for a golf outing to celebrate their memory in Michigan, but later transformed into a charity. When Walsh moved to the Emerald Coast, she wanted to continue to make an impact. That is when she founded Fore Her.
The organization now uses three signature events -- Tea Fore Her, The Fore Her Golf Outing and the Pink Walk -- to raise funds and financially assist local individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treatment. Funds raised are used to pay for mortgage/rent or utilities or helping with auto repairs for patients to get to treatments.

Legendary Marine in Destin hosted Shelter House’s 7th Annual Palate & Palette on February 4.
“We are proud to host this event and we are excited for what this means to the community,” said Fallon Ellender, Events Coordinator at Legendary Marine. Offering an elegant setting surrounded by beautiful watercraft, Legendary Marine was the perfect site for attendees to support Shelter House’s programs and services.
“We are so thrilled to be hosting this fundraising event,” said Rosalyn Wik, CEO and Executive Director of Shelter House. “The funds that are raised are used to support survivors of domestic violence in Okaloosa and Walton counties.” In the mid 1980s, Shelter House was established, and in January of 1992 the organization opened the emergency shelter’s doors. It was discovered that the rape crisis services for Okaloosa and Walton Counties were being discontinued, so Shelter House filed a letter of intent to be the area’s service provider. As the area’s only statecertified domestic and sexual violence center, Shelter House offers services ranging from counseling to advocacy and shelter.
Palate & Palette offered a 5-course meal prepared by 5 of the top chefs along the Emerald Coast. Paired with wines from Elite Worldwide, attendees enjoyed a meal with courses ranging from duck confit and blueberry galettes to peanut butter buttercake with warm strawberry compote. “This is an incredible opportunity to bring our community together to benefit those who need it most,” said Rosalyn. Due to support from the community and signature events such as Palate & Palette, Shelter House’s services are free.

photos & story by Savannah VasquezFor the past 50 years, Rhodes Auto Repairs has been a staple in the Destin Community. The repair shop was founded by Luther and Donna Rhodes in March of 1973 at its present location, 327 Mountain Drive. Eventually, their son Scott took the reins and together with the help of his father, continued the family legacy.
In 1994, at the age of 16, Ben Causton started working at Rhodes. It all started with a broom, cleaning shop oors, packing bearings on boat trailers, changing oil, and nally making his way up the ladder to work on cars. He told Mr. Rhodes he was going to buy the business one day. Luther laughed and said, “Get to work, boy.” In 1999, Ben’s father told him it was his last chance to attend college, or he would not be paying for it. Ben’s mentor, Luther, encouraged him to go to college and said, “You will always have a job here, but you need to go to college,” and with that reassurance, Ben went to college. During his school breaks and summers, Ben continued his work at Rhodes Auto Repairs part-time. After receiving a degree in business administration in 2003 and meeting his future wife Nichole, he went to work for the corporate side of NAPA Auto Parts. For the next 15 years, Ben and his family moved around parts of Tennessee and Texas, living the corporate dream before deciding it was time to move back home to Destin. But even during the years Ben Causton and his family were away, they weren’t far from the Rhodes’ thoughts, and through the years the families remained close. When the Rhodes were off on one of their adventures in their RV, they made it a point to stop by and have dinner with Ben and his family. The same was true for Ben, returning during the holidays to visit family, he would go and see Luther to catch up and talk through life’s journeys and dreams.
After moving back to Destin, Ben went to work for the Porsche dealership until 2018 when he received the call from Luther he’d been waiting for his whole life. The Rhodes had decided it was time to settle down and nally enjoy retirement. After careful thought, they decided it was time to pass the torch and Luther’s rst call, of course, was to Ben. After a few months of negotiations, Ben made his dream a reality and took over ownership of Rhodes Auto Repairs in October of 2018. The following year, Ben’s wife, Nichole obtained her real estate brokerage license and founded Go Coastal Realty. Together they operate two businesses at 327 Mountain Drive where ONE family with BIG dreams helps other families with the biggest investments they make; automotive and real property!
Here’s to 50 more years and an awesome legacy of dedication to family, dedication to the community, and a steadfast promise of quality automotive care that you can depend on.
You're Right Up Our Alley
What do bowling pins, gardens, and pies have in common? They were all a part of the talk at the “You’re Right Up Our Alley” bowling competition on February 3. Held at Hurricane Lanes in Destin, over 100 bowlers came together to raise money for projects in the Destin Community. “We are here with the Destin Forward Class of 2023, which is sponsored by the Destin Chamber of Commerce, to raise funds for our class community-service project,” said Cynthia Garber, Senior Manager of Leasing, Destin Commons. “This project entails overhauling the Destin Mainstreet Community Garden. Additionally, we are also going to be doing some facelift items for the American Legion Post to support our veterans. We have a great silent auction, and we are excited to have everybody here.”
Laughs and shouts could be heard across the lanes as people teased each other over strikes, missed pins and gutter balls. While everyone enjoyed the breakfast provided by Ruby Slipper, some were there for other reasons. Kayla O’Leary, Waypoint Title, Director of Business Development said, “I am here for comedic relief.” Along those lines there was another fundraiser taking place outdoors where Mayor Bobby Wagner was getting pies in the face for a donation to the event.
Destin Forward is the Chamber’s 9-month hands-on experience where members learn from area professionals while developing and producing a class project by graduation in May. The Chamber takes about 25 students and information can be obtained by contacting the Chamber directly.

Blue Dog At Bijoux
Bijoux Restaurant & Spirits in Miramar Beach offers an elegant and intimate setting for any event and on February 3, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) supporters gathered for a luncheon with Wendy Rodrigue Magnus. Sharing her love for others and the art of her late husband, George Rodrigue, Wendy’s stories were a hit from the first spoken word.
For almost 20 years Wendy’s presentations have reached tens-of-thousands of people and during the Blue Dog At Bijoux event Wendy talked about facing her fears; fears which in many cases arose before or during her tours. Fears ranging from navigating through Dallas, Texas to dealing with a broken tooth, to breaking her kneecap just before she departed for a tour. Learning from these events, Wendy realized that everyone has fears and can relate to what each other is going through.
Zandra Wolfgram, Director of Marketing and Communications, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, introduced Wendy by explaining the reason for the event. “Our art-education foundation supports events like this one today and other dynamic performances and visual art initiatives. These initiatives support K-12 students, special-needs adults, and military; all in our local community.” Zandra continued, “Every MKAF concert, every festival, every artfuldining experience supports the ArtsReach program.” Empowering and inspiring people, the ArtsReach program brings the arts directly to community members that may not have the opportunity to attend regularly scheduled events.

OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity
What is the OSCO Sheriff’s Star Charity?
The OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity was founded in 2014 by members of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Of ce. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization dedicated to assisting members of local law enforcement with unplanned life-changing events as a means of giving back to those that work so hard serving our great community.
The charity also provides nancial and labor assistance to other charities and charitable causes in our community as determined by our Board of Directors.
How did this organization come about?
The OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity was created and implemented by leadership at the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Of ce. Our charity was created so there was a plan in place to serve those that serve our community.
What impact does the Sheriff’s Star Charity have on the community?
Most certainly, we have a positive impact on the community. We are involved in a number of wonderful events that occur in our community that many people may not be familiar with. For example, we have an agency member who started the ‘Hospice
Tree’ program. We help purchase miniature Christmas trees that she will give out to be decorated. Once complete, the decorated trees are turned back in where they are given to Hospice patients. In addition to that, our Charity partners with School Resource Of cers for the ‘Angel Tree’ program where they identify students whose families may be facing nancial hardship. They make sure each child is sponsored to ensure they have a Merry Christmas. We also make monetary donations to local charities to ensure they know that OCSO Star Charity is here to support them.
What are some future goals?
Financially, we would love to be able to offer a local scholarship. While we have not ironed out any details or criteria, being able to support the education of local youth would be fantastic. We are also looking into having annual sponsorship options to support our missions.
What are some challenges your organization faces?
I would say our biggest challenge is fundraising. A majority of our donations are received by Sheriff’s Of ce employees who make voluntary donations through payroll. Our charity is also staffed by volunteers so any fundraising we do is done as volunteers and is separate from our normal work hours.
What events does your organization host? Are any open to the public?
Currently, the OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity holds several events and/or fundraisers. One of our most popular events is the ‘OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity Outlaw 2 Gun Match.’ In this event, shooters come from all over the panhandle to compete in this one-day shooting match consisting of multiple stages. It is open to all competitors, and we have different categories for everyone. We also have the 30 Days of Christmas Gun Giveaway where we give away 30 guns in 30 days. This is also open to the public; however, you must be able to possess a rearm and pass a background check.
We are also in the process of getting involved with pickleball. We are looking into hosting a tournament this fall, so keep an eye out for more updates!
What is your role and how did you get involved with the OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity?
One night we had a new deputy come to work and you could see that he was upset about something. After sitting down and talking with him, I learned that his father was just involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Tennessee that ultimately led to the death of his stepmother. The charity was able to step in and assist this deputy and you could see how grateful he was to have an organization in place that supported him in his personal life.
After that incident, I knew I wanted to be a part of the OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity. Shortly after, I became the Treasurer of the charity, where I served for four years. In October 2022, I was selected as the President where I will serve through 2024.
What would you like our readers to know about the OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity?
I would like the readers to know who they have representing their community. Our charity has 19 total board members that consist of members of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Of ce. All these members volunteer their time to support local law enforcement and our community. Nationally, there is so much negative media about law enforcement that it is important for us to reinforce that we serve you and we serve our community. How can someone get involved and/or support your nonprofit?
If you would like to be involved with the OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity, you can follow us on Facebook OCSO Sheriff’s Star Charity or online at https://ocsostarcharity.com. If you would like to make a donation, you can donate electronically to PayPal by scanning the QR code, or you may mail donations to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Of ce.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions at charity@ sheriff-okaloosa.org or call (850)651-7410 and request to speak to Dennis Fields.

“We are so happy to finally be in our permanent home,” said Alaqua Founder Laurie Hood. “We have welcomed the animals to their new sanctuary and now we want to welcome our community to come see what their love, fundraising, and support throughout the years has built. After eight years of creating this space, we invite everyone to come ‘Celebrate Alaqua’ and honor this momentous move for our organization.”

There will also be kids’ activities including a wildlife scavenger hunt, face painting, and birdhouse decorating.
Okaloosa County School District Announces Education Staff Professional of the Year
The Okaloosa County School District is proud to announce this year’s Education Staff Professional of the Year is Ms. Shawna Crist, Media Assistant at Plew Elementary School. Mrs. Crist spent thirteen years in the classroom before becoming a mom and choosing to become a full-time volunteer at Plew Elementary, where she received the 2012 Senior Adult Volunteer of the year award. Now, in her eleventh year as the Media Assistant, she shares ideas with others throughout our District and is known to staff and parents as a “cheerleader for readers who strives to keep students from falling through the cracks.”

“Our Education Staff Professionals play a vital role in our schools and across our District. We have so many employees who give their all to impact the lives around them positively, and Ms. Crist sets that example every day,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers.
patterns of these rays is important for the conservation of the species. “Anything we can do to assist in the advancement of an endangered species in Northwest Florida, is oin to be a benefit or all o us said Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Trey Goodwin. “We are lucky to have a team of marine biologists in Okaloosa County’s Tourism Development Department that understands how important these rays are to the collective marine ecosystem.”
In November 2022, Mote Researchers, along with the Okaloosa County Coastal Resource Team, found rays and tagged seven of them with acoustic tags the size of a small battery. Tracking the movement of the rays will help determine why the rays migrate to the Destin-Fort Walton Beach area in the fall and winter months.
Okaloosa County’s Coastal Resource Team with Destin-Fort Walton Beach Tourism recently initiated and assisted a team of researchers in identifying and tagging devil rays in the Gulf of Mexico.
Mrs. Crist was chosen as Support Person of the Year for Plew in 2018, is the creator of the school news show, Violin Club sponsor, Mrs. Crist-mas Shop sponsor, Plew Planters Team lead, and Plew Parent Leadership co-president. Plew Elementary Principal Tammy Matz stated, “Mrs. Crist is an icon; a person widely admired especially for having reat in uence or si nificance here at lew Elementary. I could not think of anyone more
While installing three miles of sand fencing on Okaloosa Island in 2021, members of the Coastal Resource team noticed a number of devil rays swimming close to the beach. The Coastal Resource Team’s curiosity into the migratory patterns of these rays prompted them to contact researchers from Mote Marine Laboratory Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida.
For the past years, Mote Researchers have been collecting data on three pelagic ray species: spotted eagle rays, manta rays, and de il rays. All three species are classified as “Endangered.” Understanding the migratory
“It will be great to have some answers for the locals and tourists that constantly stop us on the beach asking questions about this very visible species. Hopefully we will see these devil rays returning to our coast year after year and we can determine why they overwinter in our waters,” said Alex Fogg, Coastal Resource Manager for Destin-Fort Walton Beach.
This multi-year collaborative study aims to tag 30-50 devil rays. The data will be analyzed to not only provide some insight into the movement ecology of this endangered species but also guide coastal management throughout their range. This is just one of many cooperative projects the Coastal Resource Team engages in with re ional uni ersities and scientific partners.

Business Before Hours
Early mornings are made for coffee, smiles, and fellowship and on February 10 all 3 were present as the Destin Chamber held its monthly Breakfast Before Hours at LuLu’s in Destin. Sponsored by HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, the February meeting covered everything from heart care to a wide variety of education issues.
Cardiac-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Eric Sandwith, gave the sponsor’s presentation and began his talk by introducing everyone to the hospital. “We are taking care of individuals, one patient at time.” He continued, “We have an amazing administrative staff which allows us to become more than we were yesterday.” There are no cookie-cutter programs for heart care, and Dr. Sandwith put it this way: “Everyone deserves special care.” To illustrate this, he talked about the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) conducted at the hospital and how heart disease includes more than just the structural parts of the heart, it includes the plumbing and the electrical.
A second presentation was given by the principals of Destin High and Destin Elementary Schools. Using a panel setting, Chamber Board Chairman Jason Belcher asked the two principals several questions about education and its effect on commerce and the community. Jason also asked the principals what the business community could do to support education and the answer was simple: mentor struggling students and assist with the integration of the increasing number of international students.

Destin’s Leading Professionals in the Business of Luxury and Financial Matters
Twenty years ago, Heather Luzansky decided to make a change and move to paradise, Destin, Florida, to be close to her twin sister, Heidi. Shortly thereafter, she completed a major goal and obtained her bachelor’s degree in business administration. Her life took a turn as she moved away for 6 years while working with small businesses and eventually with the government, living in both Las Vegas and England during these years. Heather’s career then brought her back home to the Emerald Coast with her previous spouse and two children. She continued her career with the government for another 5 years before meeting her now husband, Mike Luzansky, and taking a big step to pursue working side-by-side with him at Street Legal Golf Carts. Since last summer, she has accomplished helping her husband expand their golf cart business to two locations on the Emerald Coast and winning Best in Destin this year. She is looking forward to the coming year and hopes to establish a third location and grow the business even more.

In 2017, Mike Luzansky felt he needed a change of pace and decided moving from Los Angeles was a much-needed step forward in his life. After exploring the Emerald Coast on a cross country RV trip with his kids, he quickly discovered this was the place for his change. With a passion for traveling, tourism and customer service, Mike started renting golf carts as a side business in 2018 to diversify from his years of running E-commerce based retail companies. Two years later he started customizing his rental carts during the off season, which then led to him launching and branching out to open his dealership, Street Legal Golf Carts, as well as expanding service for its customers. Although business and entrepreneurship run through his mind most of the time, he is first and foremost a dad, husband, and son. With his wife as his partner and best friend, they have expanded to 2 locations, one being in Miramar Beach and the other in Santa Rosa Beach. He is anticipating a third location to be opening soon.

What sets him apart is that he has worked in many different restaurants, with many different languages, with many different menus, and many different people. He has worked as a leader, mentor, manager, trainer, consultant, and most importantly, always as a friend.
Simple pleasures and new adventures are what inspires and brings passion to Chef Efrain’s life, which can be easily seen in the presentation of his sushi.

Heather LuzanskyLuxurious Luggage
We rarely think much about luggage, well, until we need it. But luggage is one of those things in life that you shouldn’t skimp on. A good piece of luggage can last you for years and choosing a classic and luxurious piece will ensure you look put together and stylish for all your jet-setting trips to come.
story by Anna McGauley StocktonBackpackin’ It
Attention fellow non-adventurers, just because you have a nice backpack for travel doesn’t mean you actually have to go backpacking, so you can keep reading. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, backpacks are a handy way to store all your needs for a quick trip or to bring everything you need onboard for a long flight. There’s plenty of room for electronics, snacks, books, and even extra clothes in case you end up being forced into an overnight stay at your connecting airport, and if you traveled at all in the summer of 2022, you’ve probably had that pleasure. But just because it’s a backpack, does not mean it can’t be luxurious and stylish. Posh leather backpacks are always a nice, classic look that will stand the test of time.
Weekender Bag
We are all familiar with du el bags, they are great for going to the gym or an overnight stay at a friend’s house. One step up from a du el bag is a weekender. A weekender is basically a du el that is larger, roomier, has more pockets, and really likes to travel. Small enough to bring as a carry-on, yet large enough to bring everything you need for, you guessed it, a weekend away. This bag is versatile and a must-have for your luggage collection. Weekenders tend to be more colorful, a bit fancier than their du el cousins, and can be found in all price ranges, and by most designers. From Gucci to Louis Vuitton to Fendi, weekenders are a stylish way to pack for your weekend getaway.
Spacious Suitcase
Everyone needs a large suitcase for those long trips, family trips, or if you’re simply an over packer like me. Because even though I haven’t worn that sweater in 3 years, it might be just perfect for a night out during my beach vacation. The good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice luxury and style at the expense of functionality. Many luxury brands o er large suitcases in di erent styles to choose from, such as rolling suitcases, hard side, soft side, and the classic old-school non-rolling suitcases. Make sure you check the weight of the suitcase before you commit to buying though, some can be heavy and will allow less weight available for clothing, souvenirs, and of course, overpacking.
Hanging Garment Bag
Garment bags have come a long way, baby. They are sleeker and better designed than ever before. Disguised as a mini suitcase or weekender, these garment bags unfold before your eyes and show o your crisp, clean, and unwrinkled clothes. This, along with pockets and compartments for the rest of your gear, a garment bag may be all you need for a quick trip. Whether you go with a classic leather or something a little flashier with a luxury logo, it is what’s on the inside that counts when it comes to modern day garment bags.
Matching Sets
Having a matching set of luggage gives an unparalleled look of class and sophistication. Not only does it have a luxurious look, even if you did not actually spend that much, it gives the impression you have it all together (no one needs to know if you don’t). Building a matching set can also be done slowly by buying pieces over time, especially with luxury brands like Louis Vuitton or Gucci, as you can get the same classic print for years.
Vintner Dinners
Supporters and members of Sinfonia Gulf Coast -- the area’s only professional symphony orchestra – gathered in multiple locations around the Emerald Coast to participate in celebrity vintner dinners on February 24. This event is just one part of the annual cultural extravaganza, Crescendo!
The dinner destinations included Sandestin, Churchill Oaks Clubhouse, Kelly Plantation Owner’s Club, Seagar’s and Bijoux. This exciting weekend-long celebration is organized to raise funds for Sinfonia’s educational and community-engagement programs. Known for presenting the highest quality concerts on the northern Gulf Coast, Sinfonia ‘redefines’ charitable events with this experience that celebrates the cultural and culinary arts by showcasing world-class vintners, celebrity chefs, expert spirit purveyors, amazing auction items, and award-winning musical guests.
This three-day event culminates with the Crescendo! Main Event, held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa on Sunday. This year’s theme was black & white ball, and it showcased hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, a silent auction, a seated lunch, and a musical performance.
Proceeds from Crescendo! benefit Sinfonia’s programs which include Sinfonia Youth Orchestra, Arts in Medicine with Sacred Heart Hospital, and elementary school programs in Okaloosa and Walton Counties.

5th Annual Hard Hats & High Heels
Teresa Jones, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Walton County said, “Our area is suffering from an affordability issue, but for women especially, those who serve as the head of their families, they face obstacles that make accessing decent affordable housing seem impossible.” To address these needs, on February 10, Habitat for Humanity of Walton County held their 5th Annual Hard Hats & High Heels luncheon. Hosted by the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, Presenting Sponsor Vacasa, and Founding Sponsor The Merchants of Rosemary Beach, brought a sold-out crowd together to raise funds to support Habitat’s vision that everyone needs a decent place to live.
“We are so grateful for our generous sponsors, donors, and women that show up to support Habitat and our mission,” said Teresa. “This has become a sellout event year after year, and we are thrilled to host an event that is loved by so many women in our community and helps them build strength, stability and self-reliance.” And with raffles, games, and a silent auction, thousands of dollars were raised to assist families build safe and affordable places to call their own.
photos & story by Harley S. Sampson, Jr.I AM DESTIN Tim Krueger
What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Emerald Coast?
I was born in upstate NY but fortunately my parents decided to move to Florida when I was five so I’ve been here since the 60s, first in Clearwater then Pensacola. I did a stint in Houston from 1980 to 1996 to get my ‘big city’ experience. The irony is I wanted to go back to Pensacola but luckily for me my firm relocated me to Destin.
What is your profession and what led you to choose it?
I grew up poor. Don’t get me wrong, I had a roof and rarely went hungry but that was about it. I learned to hustle when I was about eight -- washing cars and doing odd jobs, but my best venture was my lawn service. I learned if you always did more than you promised you could build a thriving business. As a young man in Houston, I was a partner in an electronics store. I wanted something bigger and got a break when I ran into an old friend from Clearwater who became a stockbroker. I went on an interview in 1983 and here I am forty years later co-managing a billion dollar wealth management team at Merrill Lynch along with my partner Cory Fosdyck and our other fantastic teammates. What I love about the business is that you can always learn something new every day if you keep an open mind.
What are some of your favorite things about Destin?
Destin is special in so many ways. It’s a beautiful barrier island blessed with a large harbor and a pass to the Gulf. I often tell folks that Destin has the best beaches in the world and the best water in the country and I have yet to find anyone who can refute that. Where else can you hop on your boat, in my case a 1995 Cobalt, and run through the myriad of islands between here and Pensacola. That stretch looks just like it has for thousands, perhaps even millions of years. This is one of the biggest benefits of being surrounded by the largest military range in the free world -- Eglin. While one can argue about the pros and cons of the development we’ve experienced, it’s irrefutable that Eglin and Hurlburt have spared thousands of acres of land, a lot of which we can all enjoy.
Three words that best describe you.
Fun-Loving. Thoughtful, Caring and Giving (yes I know that’s three), Impatient
Favorite place for dining or going out?
If its not being on the water, on the jet ski, or aforementioned boat I would say fishing in the gulf with one of our many local charter captains. I also enjoy riding the Harley north of the bay. People tend to forget one of the big positives of the development in our area is we have so many great entertainment venues and restaurants, too many of which to name here. Speaking of which, we do avoid the chains and do our best to support our local establishmants.
What is one thing that you do not go a day without?
A hug from sweet Jill and some exercise to keep the body fit and the spring in my cranium from exploding.
Finish this statement. I AM Destin because…
I believe you shouldn’t complain if you don’t have a solution, which is why I’ve been involved in and even led various committees in the city. I believe if you have the ability to give back you should, which is why I am a trustee of Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation. I support Sinfonia Gulf Coast, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Coast, and Special Operators Transition Foundation, just to name a few.
I am Destin because I made a decision when turned 37 to ‘write a call on my career’ and live where I wanted to raise my children and subsequently retire. While that was a bit scary at the time it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
