A

ll forms of life cannot help but communicate. Even in the plant kingdom. Each species - plant, insect or animal - does it in its own way, using its own code, sometimes simply in the form of chemical or electrical impulses, sometimes in more complex ways. Knowing how to ‘read’ this language is the key to interpreting the behaviour of a species, and to understanding its way of life. The human race has predominantly developed verbal language, even losing the ability to cognize, at least on a conscious level, messages that in nature are clearly decipherable. And now that we even entrust the delicate task of convening our emotions to a machine that does not have any, our communication system is in complete breakdown: simply follow any forum on the web to realize how everything is off register. The simplest rules of grammar are abandoned, while the words, not supported by proper vocal intonation, assume more or less importance than they would between two people in flesh and blood: no one would insult a stranger on the street by threating or mocking him. The web can make us scurrilous and ignorant. This happens because of a lack of human interaction, and the digital language does not correspond to our true nature, made of flesh. Our current usus scribendi does not represent us, or at least I hope it doesn’t. If we really are what we type, then we are in a pretty bad state. As usual, the problem is not the means but the use we make of it.

essuna forma di vita può fare a meno di comunicare. Neanche nel regno vegetale. Ogni specie – pianta, insetto o animale – lo fa a modo suo, utilizzando un suo codice, a volte semplicemente sotto forma di impulsi chimici o elettrici, altre volte in forme più complesse. Saper “leggere” questo linguaggio è il segreto per interpretare i comportamenti di una specie, e capire il suo modo di vivere. La razza umana ha sviluppato soprattutto il linguaggio verbale, perdendo addirittura la capacità di comprendere, almeno a livello conscio, messaggi che in natura sono invece chiaramente decifrabili. Ed ora che addirittura affidiamo il delicato compito di trasmettere le nostre emozioni ad una macchina, che non ne ha, il nostro sistema comunicativo è in completa avaria: è sufficiente seguire un qualsiasi forum sul web per rendersi conto di come tutto sia fuori scala. Le più semplici regole grammaticali vengono abbandonate, mentre le parole, non supportate da una corretta intonazione vocale, assumono più o meno importanza di quanta non ne avrebbero tra due persone in carne e ossa: nessuno insulterebbe uno sconosciuto per strada, lanciandogli minacce o deridendolo. Il web ci può rendere vigliacchi e ignoranti. Questo accade perché manca l’interazione umana, ed il linguaggio digitale non corrisponde alla nostra vera natura, fatta di carne. Il nostro attuale usus scribendi non ci rappresenta, o almeno spero. Se siamo veramente quello che digitiamo, siamo messi piuttosto male. Come al solito, il problema non è il mezzo, ma l’uso che se ne fa.
