“Dedicato a tutti coloro che fanno o hanno fatto parte di C14” Non è come in miniera, ma non c’è dubbio che il lavoro qui a C14 sia duro. Nessuno, però, si risparmia. I Magnifici 7 [Alexander (sì, ci sono anch’io), Matteo, Alessandra, Federico, Elisa, Giulia e Floriana] - con i quali ho condiviso anni di sanguinose battaglie, non si tirano mai indietro. I più giovani, le cui vite sono ancora nel pieno del farsi, seguono a ruota.

Ma seguono sul serio, quasi imbarazzandosi se si accorgono che il loro impegno è riconosciuto e apprezzato.

Per descrivere tutto questo e per illustrare la qualità e il dettaglio di un progetto contemporaneo C14 ho scelto di dedicare l’intero numero 14 a un unico caso rappresentativo del nostro stile e modus operandi. Si tratta dell’originale e eclettico LIA, LIFE INSPIRATION AND ART, a Seoul, Gangnam-gu, 1F 420, Dos.an-daero.

Un lavoro elettrico, difficile, entusiasmante e completo. Abbiamo pensato a tutto, dalla prima scintilla dell’idea alla sera dell’inaugurazione, quando viene stappata l’ultima bottiglia di Champagne. La velocità poi da record, risultato di una collaborazione perfetta tra capacità italianissime nel design e nell’arredo, e super coreane nell’organizzazione e nei tempi di realizzazione. Un ringraziamento va a Theophilus Suh, che si è dimostrato un imprenditore illuminato e geniale. Ma, specialmente su questo ultimo punto, non ho mai avuto dubbi ;) Enjoy “Dedicated to all those people who are, or have been, part of C14”

It’s not like working down the mines, but there’s no doubt that work is hard here at C14. No-one is spared. The Magnificent 7 - [ Alexander (yes, me too), Matteo, Alessandra, Federico, Elisa, Giulia and Floriana ] – people with whom I have shared years of bloody battles, never bail. The younger ones, whose lives are brimming with promise, follow close behind. And follow they do, almost embarrassed when they realise that their work and commitment is both recognized and appreciated.

To describe all this and illustrate the quality and detail of a contemporary project C14 I have decided to devote the entire issue to a single case which represents our style and modus operandi. I’m talking about the original, eclectic LIA, LIFE INSPIRATION AND ART, in Seoul, Gangnam-gu, 1F 420, Dos.an-daero. This job was electric, difficult, exciting and complete. We were in charge of everything, from the first spark of an idea to the launch party, when the last champagne cork was popped. Everything happened at record speed, the result of the perfect working collaboration consisting of quintessential Italian design and super Korean organisation and performance. Heart-felt thanks go to Theophilus Suh, who proved himself to be a luminary, genius entrepreneur. Actually, I never doubted him for a minute, especially regarding the part about being a genius ;) Enjoy

Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua Historical headquarters

U

na volta, ero ancora un giovane studente di architettura, andai a visitare un palazzo veneziano del ‘500 ristrutturato da Ettore Sottsass. Quello che mi colpì di più, e che ancora oggi ho impresso nella mente, fu il suo amore per il dettaglio. Ogni cosa era pensata nel suo materiale, e ogni materiale era studiato per armonizzarsi all’ambiente. Tutto era coerente, giusto. Il particolare era parte di un insieme e sembrava nato per stare lì dove io lo vedevo. “Ecco, così voglio progettare un giorno”, pensai. Ed è da qui che nasce C14. Anno dopo anno, abbiamo costruito investendo tempo, energie e risorse con il fine di possedere il progetto dall’inizio alla fine, di poterlo esprimere nella sua forma migliore e più perfetta, senza compromessi, senza esitazioni dovute alla mancanza di competenze specifiche. Quando un “profano” entra in un ambiente di design lo può ammirare, ma difficilmente ne potrà comprendere le difficoltà, potrà vedere la “resistenza” che i materiali hanno opposto alla realizzazione dell’idea. È una battaglia che viene combattuta perché non vinca il più comodo, il già fatto, la soluzione più semplice ma meno aderente a ciò che il progetto vuole esprimere.

Once, when I was still a young student of architecture, I went to visit a sixteenth century Venetian palace renovated by Ettore Sottsass. The thing that really struck me, and even today it’s still clearly imprinted on my mind, was his love of detail. Every aspect was considered in its material, and every material was designed to harmonise with the environment. Everything was consistent and right. The details were part of a whole which seemed to belong there where I saw it. “There, that’s how I want to design one day”, I thought. And that’s how C14 was born. Year after year, we have designed and invested time, energy and resources with the aim of owning the project from start to finish, to be able to express it in the best possible way, without compromises or hesitation caused by a lack of specific skills. When a layman enters a design environment he can admire it, but it’s unusual for him to appreciate the level of difficulty, he can see how the materials have “resisted” the completion of the idea. It’s a battle which needs to be fought so that the easiest option doesn’t win, the Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua Historical headquarters

i questa guerra, alla fine, non c’è più traccia e come per magia tutto appare lineare, modulato, coordinato e armonico. Di questa armonia andiamo fieri. In questa armonia ho investito tutti i miei sforzi. Lo potrei definire amore per i particolari, se la frase non fosse troppo usata e abusata anche nel quotidiano. È amore per il progetto, un amore tout court, che va dall’inizio alla fine, dall’idea a tutte le sue applicazioni, dalle linee generali al più minuto dettaglio. Questa premessa era necessaria per comprendere la gioia che mi dà presentarvi, con questo numero della rivista, il lavoro che abbiamo svolto in Corea per Theo Suh e il suo LIA. Una felicità motivata dal fatto che il progetto è stato seguito interamente da noi: se qualcosa non vi piacerà, sarà solo colpa nostra. Theophilus Suh l’ho conosciuto per caso. Un amico comune, due chiacchiere e la sua voglia di conoscere il nostro punto di vista sulla sua idea. “È esattamente quello che cercavo”, mi ha detto, felice, quando gli abbiamo mostrato il concept. Il progetto, però, era difficilissimo, perché lo spazio non è grande e le funzioni che avrebbe dovuto svolgere molto numerose: fra le altre necessità vi era quella di dare coerenza all’immagine di LIA inserendo, insieme, tutti i brand che al cliente interessavano. Come permettere una suddivisione degli spazi senza privarli della loro unità?

Abbiamo pensato a dei pannelli che, montabili e amovibili, consentissero la partizione e la modularità degli ambienti. Un nodo complesso, per noi, è stata l’ingegnerizzazione di questi elementi: ci siamo occupati, infatti, anche della stesura del progetto costruttivo, ossia della definizione della parte meccanica del lavoro. Devo riconoscere che ho trovato nell’impresa coreana responsabile dell’aspetto realizzativo un partner eccezionale: abbiamo avuto un confronto continuo e costante, uno scambio davvero costruttivo sotto ogni profilo. Al lavoro di immaginazione è seguito quello di scelta dei materiali e, conseguentemente, di selezione dei fornitori. Volevamo qualcuno che sapesse raccontare la storia dell’artigianato italiano e, in particolare, veneziano: siamo stati quindi in Laguna, a cercare chi facesse al caso nostro.

At the end, there’s no trace of this war, as if by magic everything looks linear, modulated, coordinated and harmonious. We’re proud of this harmony. Personally, I have invested all my energy and hard work into this harmony. I could define it as a love of detail. If this expression weren’t so over-used and abused on a daily basis. It is a love of the project, love tout court, from start to finish, from the initial idea to all the different applications, ranging from the general outline down to the minute details.

This premise was necessary to explain the sheer joy it gives me to introduce, via this issue of our magazine, the project we completed in Korea for Theo Suh and his LIA. My happiness is due to the fact that we were in charge of the entire project: if there’s something that you don’t like then we’re to blame. I first met Theophilus Suh purely by chance. A mutual friend, a chat and his desire to hear our point of view regarding his idea. “It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for”, he told me, happily, when we presented our concept to him. The project though, was incredibly difficult, the space was limited and many different functions were required to take place within it: one requirement was to make the image of LIA consistent by bringing together all the brands clients were interested in. So how could we create the different spaces without detracting from their unity? We came up with modular removable screens that could be used as partitions to create areas within the space as a whole. The engineering of these elements was something of a brain-teaser for us: in fact we were also in charge of drawing up the building plans, in other words, the definition of the mechanics of the design. I must say that the Korean company responsible for carrying out the building work proved to

bbiamo girato per calli e campielli senza risparmiarci e, alla fine, siamo stati premiati: davanti ai nostri occhi si è aperto il mondo senza tempo della Fornace Orsoni. Angelo Orsoni, il fondatore dell’azienda, parte nel 1889 alla volta di Parigi: ha un’idea, stramba ma luminosa. Vuole presentare all’Esposizione Universale un pannello multicolore che mostri ai potenziali clienti il suo campionario di smalti e di ori musivi. Nel tempio della tecnica proiettata al futuro, Angelo vuole che l’arte antica del mosaico abbia un posto tutto per sé. La Fornace Orsoni continua il suo lavoro oggi come allora: il grande spazio si apre al visitatore che rimane incantato a osservare i maestri artigiani i cui movimenti, resi morbidi dal tempo e dall’esperienza, hanno acquisito il fascino di una danza. E ancora Rubelli, con i suoi preziosi velluti, e Bevilacqua, da cui abbiamo acquistato stoffe per i rivestimenti della zona lounge. Una storia avventurosa, quest’ultima: da quasi cinque secoli la famiglia Bevilacqua lavora nei tessuti, ideando e adottando soluzioni avveniristiche per i suoi tempi. Da cinque secoli, però, Bevilacqua conserva anche le proprie tradizioni e le trasmette alle generazioni più giovani.

Oggi, in azienda, si trovano ancora i telai che si usavano nel Settecento e, volendo, possono essere impiegati per dare vita e forma a prodotti identici a quelli del tempo che fu. Orsoni, Rubelli, Bevilacqua e tanti altri ci hanno aiutato a dare vita alle nostre idee. La scelta dei materiali è un momento fondamentale per tratteggiare la personalità che lo spazio andrà ad acquisire e, inoltre, è il punto di partenza per la definizione degli arredi.

C14, da qualche anno, progetta e realizza pezzi custom che aggiungano personalità e unicità agli ambienti: abbiamo iniziato per gioco, cercando di venire in aiuto ai nostri clienti che magari facevano fatica a trovare

un arredo specifico, e continuiamo con passione, con un divertimento sempre maggiore. Chi lo dice che, un domani, non diventeremo brand? Definito ogni aspetto progettuale, il cantiere è filato poi liscio: d’altronde, avendo già fissato la data di inaugurazione, i tempi erano strettissimi. Stavamo per partire con i lavori. Ho chiamato Theo e gli ho detto che sarei stato in Corea con lui, per modificare e perfezionare, eventualmente, in corso d’opera. Gli è venuto un colpo. Con gli inviti già spediti, aveva il terrore che io gli rallentassi i lavori!

L’impresa coreana ha realizzato il LIA nel corso del mese di agosto, in poco più di venti giorni. Hanno lavorato giorno e notte, traducendo perfettamente le nostre intenzioni. Non c’è stata mai la minima incomprensione, il più piccolo scarto tra idea e materia. L’ultimo, fondamentale passo riguardava la serata di inaugurazione, che abbiamo seguito sia nell’organizzazione, sia - con molta soddisfazione nel suo svolgimento. Con LIA ci siamo stati sempre, dall’inizio alla fine. Perché un progetto, per me, è questo. Un grande insieme di scelte, che vanno dal pensiero al suo farsi, senza soluzione di continuità.

E si esplicano in ogni dettaglio, in ogni particolare appunto, che al tempo stesso deve essere originale e inserito compiutamente nel tutto. Per ottenere questo non basta progettare, bisogna avere una competenza specifica e approfondita delle fasi, delle parti, delle materie. Bisogna avere il controllo su ogni operazione, sulla resa concreta di ogni materiale. Negli anni ho investito per costruire una squadra non solo di talenti, ma di eccellenze in ciascun campo della progettazione.

Per avere sapienza costruttiva in ogni angolo del nostro design. Perché se vuoi che le cose siano fatte come vuoi, devi farle tu, devi seguirle tu, passo passo, come un bambino che cresce.

Dalla A alla Z be an excellent partner: communication between us was continuous and consistent, the exchange of ideas and information was truly constructive in every way. The concept phase was followed by the choice of materials and consequently, the selection of suppliers. We wanted someone who could tell the story of Italian craftsmanship, and Venetian craftsmanship in particular: so we took ourselves off to Laguna, in search of the right people for the job. We tirelessly combed the calli and campielli and in the end, we got what we were after: before our eyes unfolded the timeless world of Fornace Orsoni. Angelo Orsoni, the company’s original founder, set off for Paris in 1889: he had a wild yet wonderful idea. He wanted to go to the Exposition Universelle with a multi-coloured panel and show his samples of enamel and gold mosaic tesserae to potential clients. Within that temple of forward-looking techniques, Angelo wanted the ancient art of mosaics to have a place all to itself.

Today, Fornace Orsoni carries out its business just as it did then: visitors entering the large-scale working space are fascinated by the activity of the master craftsmen, their fluid movements, honed by time and experience, are like a graceful dance.

Then there is Rubelli, with its luxurious velvets, and Bevilacqua, from whom we purchased the fabric for the lounge. The latter is a story of adventure: for almost five hundred years the Bevilacqua family has been working in the textile industry, designing and employing futuristic solutions for the time. For five centuries though, Bevilacqua has preserved its traditions and handed them down to the younger generations. Today, the company still has looms which were used in the eighteenth century, and can be used to create products that are identical to those of the past. Orsoni, Rubelli, Bevilacqua and many others have helped us bring our ideas to life. The choice of materials is a crucial moment when deciding on the personality of a space, futhermore, it is the starting point for defining the interior. For some years now, C14 has been designing and producing custom-made pieces

which add character and uniqueness to interiors: at first it was merely us trying to help our clients who were struggling to find specific pieces for the interior, we carried on doing it with a passion, and we enjoy doing it more and more. Who knows, we might become a brand one day? Once we’d defined all the aspects of the design, the renovation work went smoothly: after all, we’d already set the date for the opening and we were on a tight schedule. We were just about to start. I called Theo and told him I would be in Korea with him, in case there were any alterations to carry out during the renovation work. I think I scared him, he’d already sent out the invitations and he was worried I’d slow everything down! The Korean construction company completed LIA during the month of August, in just over twenty days. They worked round the clock and followed our specifications to the letter. There was never even the slightest misunderstanding, never the tiniest difference regarding ideas and materials. The final, crucial step was the launch party, we were involved in it in terms of its organisation and, satisfyingly, on the night itself.

We’ve always been with LIA from the start to the end. Because that is what a project is, in my opinion.

A big collection of decisions, ranging from ideas to creation, with no solutions of continuity. And they are expounded in every single detail, which at the same time must be original and fit within the whole. This cannot be achieved by mere design, one must have specific skills regarding the stages, the parts and the materials. One must have control over every operation, over the actual performance of the materials. Over the years, I have invested in the formation of a team, not only people showing talent, but excellence within every area of design. So as to have constructive knowledge in every corner of our design. Because if you want something done the way you want it, you have to do it yourself, you have to oversee it yourself, step by step, like a child growing up.

A

ncora oggi la Corea del Sud finisce sulle prime pagine dei giornali più spesso per motivi connessi alle crisi internazionali o a questioni legate ai suoi confini che per il Paese stesso, il suo sviluppo economico e sociale, per la intraprendenza imprenditoriale e la cultura dei suoi abitanti. Niente di più sbagliato.

La Corea del Sud è uno dei paesi asiatici di più antica tradizione (la sua capitale risale al XVII secolo a.C.) e a più alta scolarizzazione. La sua apertura al mondo, unita a una radicata attenzione per le proprie origini e per la propria matrice culturale, ne fanno uno dei paesi più interessanti e all’avanguardia. Nel panorama non solo asiatico ma vorremmo dire globale.

Nelle arti figurative come nel cinema, nella letteratura come nel teatro. Basta citare artisti come Nam June Paik, uomo veramente cosmopolita e tra i fondatori della video art. O più di recente Hyungkoo Lee (che pochi anni fa ha avuto uno spazio d’eccezione proprio alla Biennale di Venezia) che interpreta felicemente la sintesi tra i più interessanti fermenti della scena artistica contemporanea e la grande tradizione secolare coreana. Non sarà inutile ricordare registi come Kim Ki-Duk o Park Chan-wook. Ci sono sudcoreani tra i vincitori dei grandi festival internazionali occidentali, tra cui proprio il Festival d’arte cinematografica di Venezia. Anche la produzione di entertainment è tra le più potenti e evolute dell’Asia, sia a livello di prodotti televisivi, molto esportati, che musicali.

Today, Korea still makes the headlines mainly for reasons related to international crises, or issues connected to its boundaries rather than the country itself, its economic and social growth, for its people’s entrepreneurial spirit and culture. This really couldn’t be more inaccurate.

South Korea’s traditions are among the most ancient of Asia (the capital dates back to 18 B.C.E.) and its education system is the best in Asia. Its openness to the rest of the world, combined with a deep-rooted focus on its origins and its own cultural framework, makes it one of the most interesting and advanced countries today. Not only in Asia but on a global level. South Korea features strongly in the figurative arts as well as in film, literature and the theatre. Examples of its artists include Nam June Paik, a truly cosmopolitan man and one of the founders of video art. Or more recently, Hyungkoo Lee ( only a few years ago he was given his own prestigious space at Venice’s Biennale) who joyously interprets the relationship between the most interesting movements within the contemporary art scene and ancient Korean traditions. We should also remember directors such as Kim Ki-Duk and Park Chan-wook. South Koreans feature amongst the winners of important international festivals in the western world, including the Venice Film Festival. Also, the production of entertainment is amongst one of the most evolved in Asia, both in terms of television production and musicals, which are heavily exported.

industria - dopo la prima fase di industrializzazione con le grandi chaebol, le imprese possedute da poche potenti famiglie e con attività molto diversificate - si è poi rivolta in particolare all’hi-tech e agli investimenti nelle nuove frontiere della tecnologia, che fanno del paese forse il più avanzato tra quelli che un venivano chiamati “le tigri d’Asia”. È sufficiente citare Samsung, il colosso che per primo ha sfidato Apple con una produzione di smartphone di eccezionale qualità. O LG che produce la maggior parte degli schermi televisivi al mondo. Chi non conosce le automobili Hyundai o Kia e la loro straordinaria evoluzione tecnica degli ultimi anni? Nel settore della cosmetica, i prodotti coreani per lo skincare sono tecnologicamente fra i più avanzati al mondo. La Corea è anche uno dei paesi più connessi, nel quale la rete di fibra ottica è più estesa e la velocità di connessione migliore per la popolazione. È una terra in piena crescita, che “vede” il futuro, dove si guarda al domani con ottimismo e si costruisce oggi il mondo che verrà. Seul è stata definita la città più felice del mondo, nonostante la vita sia spesso stressante per il ritmo imposto da una crescita vertiginosa.

Industry – following the first stage of industrialisation and the great chaebols - fa mily-owned conglomerates operating in very diversified types of business – then concentrated on hi-tech and investment in pioneering technology, thus becoming probably the most advanced of those economies once known as “Asian tigers”.

Take Samsung, the digital giant, the first brand to challenge Apple with its production of premium- quality smartphones. Or LG, which produces most of the world’s television screens. Who hasn’t heard of Hyundai or Kia cars and their extraordinary technical progress over recent years? In the cosmetics industry, technologically speaking, Korean skincare products are some of the most advanced in the world. Korea is also one of the most connected countries, its fibre optic network is the most extensive and the connection is the fastest. This country is booming, it can “see” the future, it looks forward with optimism and is building tomorrow’s world today. Seoul has been described as the happiest city in the world, despite the fact that life is often stressful there because of the frenetic pace of life imposed by spiraling growth.

Also from a political standpoint, South Korea stands out for its lively dynamic people who often take to the streets to defend their rights and obtain true democracy. This country is proud of its traditions yet has a deep attraction to western aesthetics, the result is an insatiable thirst for beauty and innovation.

Dalla Corea di oggi alla Venezia di ieri

A

nche da un punto di vista politico, la Corea del Sud si è distinta per la vivacità e la forza della sua popolazione che spesso è scesa in piazza per difendere i propri diritti e ottenere una piena democrazia. Un Paese fiero della sua tradizione, con un grande amore per l’estetica occidentale, che si declina in una sete inesauribile di bellezza e di novità.

Arriviamo in Corea pieni di entusiasmo: il nostro interlocutore è Theophilus Suh, visionario imprenditore con il vizio del successo, già proprietario di showroom che rivendono design italiano. La sua richiesta, però, è nuova: non più uno spazio commerciale, ma un’idea culturale forte, mai sperimentata. Al suo showroom ci chiede di affiancare un contenitore multifunzionale dove sia possibile rilassarsi e ricevere ospiti, ma anche organizzare eventi e mostre, in cui l’arte possa essere davvero un ponte tra le culture: un luogo da vivere, da assorbire, da capire e non un mall in cui comprare. Uno spazio in cui gli oggetti di design trovino casa, e si mostrino nella loro più sincera natura: non oggetti del desiderio fine a se stessi, non status symbol acquistati e non compresi, ma handy things, le belle cose utili cui è abituato chi ha soldi, gusto e cultura. Theo Suh vuole mostrare ai suoi connazionali un modo di vedere il mondo, vuole far respirare loro la cultura occidentale.

We land in Korea full of enthusiasm: our client is Theophilus Suh, a visionary entrepreneur with a taste for success, he already owns showrooms selling Italian design elements. His request, however, is new: not a retail space, a culturally strong idea, something which has never been attempted before.

He asks us to add a multifunctional space alongside the showroom where one can relax and receive guests, but also hold events and exhibitions, a place where art really can bridge the gap between different cultures: a place to experience, to absorb and understand and not merely a mall to shop in.

A space where design objects have a home, their authentic nature on display: not desirable objects simply for the sake of it, not status symbols, bought and misunderstood, but useful things, beautiful things people with money, taste and culture find handy. Theo Suh wants to show his fellow countrymen a different way of looking at the world and introduce them to western culture.

reare un luogo per l’arte e la cultura a Seul ha rappresentato quindi, per noi di C14, una doppia sfida. Da un lato abbiamo dovuto trovare la chiave giusta per mostrare il gusto italiano, il suo stile, le sue radici in un paese che ha senso critico, che è capace di giudicare e, se deluso, di bocciare senza appello. Dall’altro siamo stati chiamati a una complessa prova tecnologica: ogni dettaglio del nostro lavoro, a partire dalla scelta dei materiali, si è giocato sull’equilibrio sottile tra tradizione e innovazione, classico e moderno, occidente e oriente, sensibilità europea e visione asiatica.

Siamo partiti da una chiave interpretativa forte, capace di imprimere una direzione decisa a tutto il progetto: abbiamo scelto di ricostruire in senso contemporaneo la classicità italiana. L’Italia come patria del Rinascimento, come custode e testimone dell’arte classica. Ma a quale dei tanti tesori delle città italiane attingere per rappresentare il nostro Paese?

Abbiamo deciso di portare con noi in Corea il ricordo della più gloriosa fra le Repubbliche, storico ponte verso l’Asia e le culture dell’est: Venezia l’orientale, simbolo gemmato e magnifico della nostra cultura e dei suoi rapporti fecondi con il resto del mondo.

Creatin g a place for art and culture in Seoul was a two-fold challenge for us at C14. On the one hand we had to find the right approach to showcase Italian taste, its style, rooted in a country with critical sensitivity, which knows how to judge and, if disappointed, to reject without clemency. While on the other hand, we faced a complex technological challenge: every single detail of our work, starting from the choice of materials, influenced the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, classic and modern, the west and the east, European sensitivity and Asian vision.

We started out with a strong interpretative approach which gave the overall project a clear direction: we decided to give classic Italian style a contemporary twist. Italy in terms of the Renaissance, as the custodian and cradle of classical art. But which of the many treasures present in Italian cities should we refer to so as to best represent our country?

We decided to take the memory of the most glorious republic of all with us to Korea, the historical connection to Asia and its culture: Venice, the magnificent jewel of Italian culture and its thriving relationships with the rest of the world.

a nostra Corea è magica, affascinante, tutta protesa al suo futuro. La nostra Venezia è egualmente magica, allo stesso modo affascinante, ma tutta immersa nel suo glorioso passato.

Simmetrie e contrasti ci stimolano, la nostra fantasia è - a fatica - imbrigliata dalle competenze del mestiere. L’architetto è sempre un equilibrista, gioca sul filo ma non perde lucidità. Portare la Serenissima a Seul è un esercizio critico non da poco.

Partiamo da una considerazione di carattere generale: a Venezia la classicità si sposa e l’arte incontra l’architettura e l’urbanistica, in un connubio che non conosce fratture.

Ecco da dove nasce l’idea di utilizzare l’arco a tutto sesto. La grande invenzione di Roma, che lo esportò per ogni tipo di edificio monumentale in Europa, a Venezia trova un impiego frequente proprio laddove la praticità si deve unire all’estetica, il commercio alla bellezza: per esempio nelle entrate nobili dei palazzi, che a Venezia rigorosamente si affacciano sull’acqua. Ma ancor di più nella scansione geometrica delle procuratorie, che circondano la grande piazza San Marco, sede di ogni rappresentazione pubblica. Dove il peso della pietra assume, grazie agli archi, la leggerezza di un merletto.

Our Korea is magical, fascinating, its face turned determinedly towards its future. Our Venice is equally magical, just as fascinating, but utterly immersed in its glorious past.

We are stimulated by symmetry and contrast, our imagination is – with difficulty – tethered to the skills of our profession. An architect is always a sort of tightrope walker, walking a fine line while maintaining a sense of balance. Taking Venice to Seoul was quite a tricky exercise.

Let’s start with a general consideration: in Venice classicism marries and art meets architecture and urban design, a relationship with no rifts.

This is where the idea to use the round arch came from. Rome’s great invention, exported for every type of monumental building in Europe, In Venice it was used often, in instances where practical requirements had to combine with aesthetics, trade and beauty: for example on the main entrances to buildings, which in Venice always overlook water. But even more so in the geometric pattern of the procurator of St Mark’s, surrounding the larger square, the seat of government offices. Where, thanks to the arches, the heavy stone looks feather-light.

bbiamo scelto di riprendere questo effetto posizionando su tutto il perimetro delle sale un filtro in rete metallica con frame ad arco, verniciato grigio scuro esternamente e bronzato nella parte interna. I pezzi in esposizione trovano posto su pannelli amovibili (binari a soffitto) o direttamente sul perimetro in rete.

Le serie di elementi in metallo sono una soluzione raffinata e unica per imprigionare la luce, ammorbidendola, e incanalarla verso le opere d’arte: il risultato, di grande suggestione, ricorda lo scintillio dell’acqua nei canali della Serenissima e, insieme, crea un collegamento forte tra contenitore e contenuto.

Anche la pavimentazione è un omaggio a quella della piazza veneziana, nella scelta dei materiali come in quella dei colori. Il lastricato che si può ammirare oggi in San Marco è frutto di un rifacimento settecentesco cui si integra un ulteriore restauro negli anni 1888-1890: i materiali ivi presenti erano la trachite euganea (spesso utilizzata a Venezia perché particolarmente resistente all’azione della salsedine e, inoltre, antiscivolo) e la pietra d’Istria, mentre l’intervento ottocentesco prevede la selciatura con macigni e fasce di secchiaro. I colori e la resa materica dell’originale, quindi, sono stati le linee guida del nostro progetto: la pavimentazione è dell’azienda vicentina Trend Group, fondata nel 2000 da Pino Bisazza e specializzata nella lavorazione del mosaico, mentre per il soffitto si è scelta una colorazione rosa/arancione dalle sfumature ricche di eco.

We decided to reference this effect by placing a metallic mesh within arched frames all along the perimeter of the rooms, painted dark grey on the outside and bronze on the inside. The display pieces are housed on removable panels (on ceiling tracks) or directly on the perimeter mesh.

This series of metal elements is a sophisticated, original way to capture the light, soften it and channel it towards the works of art: the result, which creates a very strong visual impact, echoes the sparkling surface of the Venetian lagoon, and also creates a strong connection between container and content.

The flooring also pays homage to that of Venetian squares, both in the choice of materials and the colour palette. The paving today in St Mark’s Square is the result of a seventeenth-century renovation project, it was added to again between 1888 and 1890: the materials therein were Euganean trachyte ( often used in Venice because it is particularly resistant to the corrosive effects of salt, furthermore, it is non-slip) and Istrian stone, while the nineteenth century intervention included paving with boulders. Therefore, the original colours and materials guided our own design: the flooring came from Trend Group, founded in 2000 in Vicenza

by Pino Bisazza and specialised in mosaics, while for the ceiling we chose an evocative pinky orange.

l vetro fluttuato, cui si sovrappone un top in ottone bronzato, è il protagonista del bancone bar, punto centrale dello spazio espositivo che è, anche, luogo destinato all’incontro e alla convivialità. Un omaggio all’acqua di Venezia, allo scintillio delle onde che si rincorrono fra gli stretti canali della città: la luce trascorre lungo la superficie del bancone inserendosi con armonia nel progetto complessivo di interior.

Comprimarie silenziose ma ricche di personalità sono le porte scorrevoli in vetro extrachiaro, nel quale l’ottone bronzato sottolinea e riprende il motivo ad arco. Trasparenze cui si alternano leggerissimi pieni, spigoli smussati e morbidi chiaroscuri: C14 interpreta Venezia restituendone al pubblico coreano la sottile arte del dosaggio della luce unita al gusto per il dettaglio. In una parola tutta la magia che ha reso la città lagunare un unicum nel mondo.

La scelta cromatica che caratterizza la pavimentazione la ritroviamo anche nella reception: per il bancone si è voluta riprendere la grande tradizione dei mosaici veneziani, la cui cultura deriva direttamente dall’Impero romano d’Oriente, di cui (parliamo di alto medioevo, prima del Mille dopo Cristo) Venezia fu suddita. Ma come riprodurre l’antico sapore dei preziosi mosaici in modo da ricreare il senso profondo della loro storia? Abbiamo fatto ricorso alla Fornace Orsoni, l’ultima fornace storica della Serenissima ancor oggi viva e attiva, che utilizza - dal 1888 - sempre lo stesso metodo per la produzione di mosaici a foglia d’oro e smalti veneziani. Il mosaico utilizzato, nella nuance di rosso veneziano tipico della ditta, stupisce e suggestiona il visitatore: un omaggio alla millenaria tradizione artigianale italiana e all’eccellenza di Orsoni che impiega, oggi, gli stessi antichi procedimenti che i maestri vetrai si tramandavano di generazione in generazione, come un geloso segreto.

Fluted glass, above the bronze brass counter, is the main feature of the design of the bar, the central point of the display area and a place to meet and socialise.

Here we pay tribute to the water in Venice, the glittering waves flowing through the narrow canals of the city: the light spills over the surface of the bar top and the piece sits comfortably in the overall design of the interior.

The glass sliding doors have a non-speaking role in this production, nevertheless their visual impact is secured by the bonze brass which echoes the arch motif.

Transparency alternates with lightweight solid volume, rounded corners and soft chiaroscuro: C14 interprets Venice and reminds Korea of the subtle art of dispensing light combined with attention to detail. In short, the magic which made the city of Venice unique.

The colour palette of the flooring is repeated in the reception area: with the bar counter we wanted to reference the grand tradition of Venetian mosaics, which originally derived from the Roman empire in the Far East, of which (the high Middle Ages, before 1000 A.D.) Venice was part. How could we reproduce the ancient feel of precious mosaics so as to recreate that profound historical meaning? We turned to Fornace Orsoni, the very last remaining functioning furnace in Venice, it has always used - since 1888 – the same production method for Venetian gold-leaf mosaic tesserae and enamel. The mosaic we used, Venetian red, a classic shade from the company, amazes and engages visitors: it is a tribute to centuries-old Italian craftsmanship and Orsoni’s excellence, a company which even today, still employs ancient techniques, handed down from generation to generation by master glass-makers, like a jealously guarded secret.

ottone bronzato invece ritorna nel top del bancone garantendo sia la continuità materica, sia il gusto del distacco cromatico con la decisa tonalità sottostante. Dietro, gli archi sono chiusi dai magnifici tessuti Rubelli, qui scelti nella sfumatura dell’argento Ruskin Silver Color che, con la sua lucentezza appena velata, evoca il ricordo del glorioso passato della Serenissima.

In ingresso trova posto una grande libreria, studiata per il corretto posizionamento degli oggetti anche in una possibile temporary gallery, così da non dover necessariamente ricorrere a espositori esterni o a altre sovrastrutture mobili in caso di necessità.

Oltre la zona in cui avviene l’accoglienza si apre la lounge. Si tratta di un’ampia sala riservata, destinata a meeting e incontri più formali. È un luogo che deve ispirare esclusività ma anche intimità, per coinvolgere le persone in uno spazio che sia prestigioso ma che renda anche possibile una conversazione più profonda, un libero scambio di idee e pensieri, in cui la mente possa sentirsi naturalmente rilassata e a suo agio.

The bronzed brass is repeated on the bar counter thus ensuring both consistency and pleasing chromatic relief from the bold colour underneath. At the rear, the arches are enclosed by sumptuous Rubelli fabric, the shade used here is called Ruskin Silver Color, its soft shine evokes the glorious past of the world’s most romantic city.

The entrance is home to a large bookcase, specially designed to display objects, like a temporary gallery, thus eliminating the need for external display furniture.

Beyond this reception area lies the lounge. It is a large closed room, for meetings and more formal engagements. This place should express exclusivity as well as intimacy, to engage people in a space which is prestigious yet still allows for deep conversation, where ideas and thoughts can flow freely and where people feel comfortable and relaxed.

er questo abbiamo optato per i morbidi tessuti di Bevilacqua, ospitati nel mobile in vetro retrolaccato nero (un omaggio alla tradizione orientale) e utilizzati per il rivestimento di tutti i pannelli laterali. L’intera sala risulta, così, quasi foderata, in modo da eliminare anche otticamente ogni possibile sensazione di rigidità. L’azienda veneziana ha radici nel mondo della tessitura che risalgono al 1499, anche se la fondazione della Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua è della seconda metà del 1800: ancora oggi, l’antica Casa utilizza telai manuali d’epoca che vengono impiegati per la produzione dei tessuti più pregiati in catalogo.

Il celebre velluto soprarizzo, ad esempio, è realizzato con una lavorazione di estrema complessità che avviene a mano su 18 telai settecenteschi provenienti dalla Scuola della Seta della Repubblica di Venezia.

Gli eleganti mosaici Trend Group tornano nei rivestimenti dei bagni, con una scelta che permette di regalare un’impronta di assoluto design alle toilette senza perdere le sensazioni dei materiali già presenti nelle sale.

Anche sul tema degli arredi C14 ha voluto dire la sua: abbiamo realizzato una serie di pezzi custom capaci, a nostro avviso, di farsi interpreti dello spirito di LIA e della sua ispirazione più autentica.

For this reason we opted for soft Bevilacqua fabrics, found in the black retro-lacquered glass cabinet (a nod to Eastern tradition) and covering all the side panels. The whole room looks almost lined, so as to eliminate any visual feelings of hardness. The Vicenza company has had roots in the textile industry since 1499, though Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century: even today, the company uses antique manual looms to produce the most prestigious textiles from their catalogue. The famous soprarizzo velvet, for example, is the result of an incredibly complex process and is made by hand on 18 eighteenth-century looms from the Scuola della Seta della Repubblica di Venezia.

The elegant mosaics from Trend Group also feature in the bathrooms, this gives the bathroom a definite design imprint without compromising the feelings created by the materials already present in the other rooms.

Regarding the furniture, C14 had something to add to the conversation: we produced a series of custom-made pieces that manage, in our humble opion, to interpret the spirit of LIA and its most authentic inspiration.

ltre a questi, fanno bella mostra di sé i divani DePadova e Rubelli, orgoglio italiano oltre che brand che il cliente diffonde in Corea. Ceccotti Collezioni, storica impresa toscana, è presente in esposizione con una seduta doppia dal design retrò, le cui linee sinuose ben si sposano con l’ambiente immaginato da C14. La rana di Promemoria fa bella mostra di sé completando la presentazione a Seul della solida tradizione artigianale nostrana, cui imprenditori illuminati hanno saputo regalare respiro internazionale.

Il grande lampadario che, incorniciato dagli archi a tutto sesto, attira l’attenzione dei passanti è firmato Venini e, inserito in una stanza specchiante in cui anche il pavimento riflette la sua luce, rappresenta un biglietto da visita di inarrivabile fascino per il grande spazio di LIA. LIA è un sogno innovativo, uno spazio ambizioso in un paese - la Corea del Sud - che ha fatto del gusto per il futuro la sua più avveniristica tradizione.

Se brilla un’idea, C14 si affretta a essere della partita: abbiamo molto amato il progetto LIA e speriamo che possiate amarlo anche voi.

In addition to these elements, the space is enhanced by sofas from DePadova and Rubelli, the pride of Italy as well as brands sold in Korea by the client. Ceccotti Collezioni, a traditional Tuscan company, features here in the shape of a retro two-seater sofa, its curves perfectly match the environment imagined by C14. The Promemoria frog takes pride of place and completes our presentation of Italy’s solid tradition of craftsmanship which luminary entrepreneurs have managed to imbue with global appeal.

The large Venini chandelier, framed by the round arches, catches the attention of passersby, It is located in a mirrored room, even the floor reflects its light, this is LIA’s calling card, a calling card of unsurpassed seduction.

LIA is an innovative dream, an ambitious space in a country – South Korea – which has made its taste for the future its most futuristic tradition. If an idea shines, C14 can’t wait to take part: we absolutely loved the LIA project and we hope you’ll love it too.

a oggi anche a Seul, la capitale futuribile di una delle Tigri d’Asia, il pubblico può ammirare gli arredi custom disegnati e realizzati da C14. In questo caso, il tema che lega il design immaginato dai nostri architetti è quello di un materiale antico e modernissimo al tempo stesso: l’ottone bronzato. Un materiale amato da C14, che difficilmente non trova posto nei progetti curati dal nostro gruppo: si pensi soltanto, a titolo di esempio, agli store Peuterey. In questi eleganti negozi, sottili barre in ottone a sezione circolare, iterate in modo fluido e sinuoso - disegnate per riprendere il fitting dei modelli del marchio - accompagnano il cliente dall’esterno fino al cuore degli spazi vendita.

Negli uffici dell’imprenditore Tony Lu in Cina, un altro esempio luminoso. Immaginato come un omaggio agli anni Cinquanta (“Gli anni della passione, in Italia: la stessa passione che c’è oggi in Cina”, spiega Alexander Bellman) lo spazio operativo è stato impreziosito da una pavimentazione in graniglia a disegni geometrici con dettagli in ottone. Ma ottone troviamo anche nei grandi shoowroom ForD. Casa a Hangzhou, dedicati all’arredamento e immaginati come un’esperienza di design totale.

Negli arredi custom disegnati da C14 a Seul il gusto italiano incontra il pubblico della Corea del Sud, al quale presenta con orgoglio tutta l’eccellenza dell’artigianato nostrano.

As from today in Seoul, the futurist capital of one of the Tigers of Asia, the general public can admire C14’s custom-designed and produced furniture. Here, the common element in the design imag-ined by our architects is a material which is both ancient and utterly modern at the same time: bronzed brass. C14 is extremely fond of this material, it often finds a place in projects managed by our group: one example is the Peuterey stores. Within these elegant boutiques, slender brass hoops are repeated to create a fluid and sinuous rhythm – designed to echo the lines of the brand’s creations – they accompany clients from the outside right into the heart of the retail space. The design pays tribute to the Fifties (“the passionate years in Italy: the same passion found in China today”, explains Alexander Bellman) the space was enriched with geometric terrazzo tiled flooring and brass detailing. Brass also featured in the large-scale ForD. Casa showroom in Hangzhou, devoted to furniture and intended to be a total design experience for visitors.

With the C14 custom-designed furniture in Seoul, Italian taste meets the people of South Korea, we proudly presented Italian arti-sanal excellence.

er troppo tempo in Italia il lavoro artigianale è stato visto - perdonateci l’espressione come figlio di un dio minore, un mestiere da delegare a chi non riesce a far altro, posto decisamente in secondo piano rispetto alle arti considerate più intellettuali e quindi più alte. Ma l’artigianato in Italia ha costituito nel tempo una vera specificità in molti settori: è portavoce e depositario di una tradizione unica, che il mondo ci invidia. Esiste in Italia una sapienza realizzativa che raggiunge punte di assoluta eccellenza con tutti i materiali della tradizione. Per questo motivo C14 ha fortemente voluto che gli arredi venissero prodotti esclusivamente e direttamente in Italia, con un controllo costante e meticoloso dei passaggi e delle lavorazioni necessarie. In modo da portare anche nell’estremo oriente la sapienza del nostro lavoro con oggetti preziosi, ma potremmo dire proprio inimitabili.

Gli arredi sono stati studiati in ogni dettaglio, per restituire un’immagine attuale e sofisticata del design italiano: la Corea del Sud, paese straordinario, sta conoscendo uno sviluppo enorme nella ricerca architettonica, in una direzione volta spesso a ripensare il rapporto tra spazio pubblico e dimensione privata. A Seul, città in fermento e con una altissima densità abitativa, si studia la progettazione di luoghi di vita collettivi che siano declinabili in diverse modalità di fruizione. Se il privato può divenire pubblico, anche il pubblico deve saper rispettare il privato, come lo Yin e lo Yang della vita collettiva.

For far too long, craftsmanship in Italy was con-sidered – pardon the expression - son of a lesser God, a craft was performed by someone who was unable to do anything else, placed on a lower level compared to arts which were deemed more intellectual and therefore more elevated. But Italian craftsmanship has long been highly specific in many sectors: it speaks for and acts as a depository for unique traditions envied by the whole world. In Italy, production know-how using all the traditional materials is at a level of absolute excellence. For this reason, C14 was adamant that the furniture should be exclusively produced directly in Italy, with constant and meticulous control of the various stages and techniques of production. We wanted to take our know-how, we could even say our inimitable know-how, regarding precious objects to the Far East.

We studied the design of the furniture right down to the last detail, in order to create a modern, sophisticated image of Italian design: South Korea, an extraordinary country, is developing architecturally at an astonishing rate, often in terms of rethinking the relationship between public areas and private space. In Seoul, a densely populated, thriving city, collective living spaces are interpreted in terms of different functions. If private space can become public, then public areas must also respect private space, like the Yin and Yang of collective living.

er il bancone del bar abbiamo immaginato 12 sgabelli con struttura in ottone bronzato e seduta imbottita in velluto Rubelli color terra bruciata, che richiama le tonalità del mosaico a pavimento pur senza sovrapporvisi acriticamente. La collaborazione con la storica azienda Rubelli regala un grande valore aggiunto al nostro lavoro: l’abbinamento cromatico tra il metallo e la preziosa stoffa si allinea alla scelta stilistica dell’intero spazio e contribuisce a ricreare quel senso veneziano che era il nostro obiettivo.

Per la lounge abbiamo desiderato uno spazio informale per chiacchierare attorno a alcuni tavolini disegnati e realizzati da noi.

Gli elementi di arredo sono stati immaginati diversi nelle dimensioni e nei colori, anche se per tutti la base è in ottone bronzato con piano in vetro e inserti in marmo: quest’ultimo dettaglio è costruttivamente complesso da realizzare, ma è un’idea cui teniamo molto perché capace di regalare fascino senza appesantire la linea dell’oggetto. Il primo tavolino è in vetro retrolaccato rosso scuro con marmo statuario, il secondo in vetro grigio fumé trasparente con marmo nero Saint Laurent, il terzo in vetro laccato blu notte lucido con marmo sodalite.

Tutto intorno, il comfort degli arredi DePadova e Rubelli.

For the bar we imagined 12 bar stools made of bronzed brass, up-holstered with Rubelli velvet in a burnt sienna shade, to gently echo the colours in the mosaic floor without being too heavy-handed. The professional collaboration with the historical Rubelli company added immense value to our work: the chromatic juxtaposition of metal and precious fabric was perfectly in line with our style choices for the entire space and helped to recreate that Venetian feel we were aiming for.

For the lounge we wanted a relaxed space where people could chat around tables designed and created by us.

The furniture elements are all different sizes and colours, though they all have a brass base, glass top and marble inserts: the latter detail is rather complex in terms of construction, but we really be-lieved in this idea as it adds appeal without weighing down the lines of the object. The first table is made of dark red retro-lacquered glass, the second one smoked grey glass and black Saint Laurent marble, the third table is made of glossy inky blue lacquered glass and sodalite marble.

All around, comfort is provided by furnishings from DePadova and Rubelli.

eguendo il fil rouge dei materiali, e in particolare come dicevamo dell’ottone bronzato, per la VIP Room abbiamo scelto di realizzare una nuova edizione di un pezzo illuminante che nel 2011 era stato accolto con favore e interesse. Si tratta della lampada a sospensione Three Balls, pensata originariamente per Mattia Cielo, gioielliere per il quale avevamo progettato un innovativo spazio a Milano.

Three Balls nasce da un’idea di Alexander Bellman sulla base di una volontà precisa: permettere agli ospiti di sedersi attorno a un tavolo senza che vi sia alcuna barriera fra loro. Three Balls consiste, infatti, in un corpo illuminante centrale a luce diffusa cui si aggiungono 3 corpi per luce puntata, comandabili ciascuno con il semplice tocco della mano.

La struttura in ottone bronzato regala suggestivi giochi di luce e, con le sue linee pulite costituite da un’alternanza sapiente di forme curve e lineari, ben si sposa con l’ambiente di LIA. Il disegno, che presenta un’allusione scoperta alla struttura del cosmo, vuole essere, qui, un omaggio alla grande tradizione lagunare di studi astronomici e geografici: si ricordi, almeno, il celeberrimo mappamondo veneziano di Fra’ Mauro, un grande planisfero circolare databile attorno alla metà del XV secolo e oggi conservato presso la Biblioteca Marciana.

Following the fil rouge within the range of materials, and in particu-lar bronzed brass as we said before, for the VIP Room we decided to make a new edition of a lighting piece which was well-received in 2011. Three Balls is a suspended light and was originally designed for, Mattia Cielo, a jeweller’s for whom we came up with a design for their innovative space in Milan.

Three Balls is the brainchild of Alexander Bellman, based on a very specific idea: allow guests to sit round a table without any barriers between them. In fact, Three Balls consists of a central element which emits soft light, together with 3 spot lights, each one controlled by a simple touch of the hand.

The bronzed brass structure creates interesting light effects and its clean look composed of thoughtful alternation of curves and lines suits the LIA setting perfectly. The design, which openly alludes to the structure of the cosmos, pays homage to the great Venetian tradition of the study of astronomy and geography: at the very least, it references the renowned Ventian map of the world by Fra’ Mauro, a large-scale circular planisphere drawn on parchment which can be dated back to the mid-fifteenth century, today it is housed in the Biblioteca Marciana.

spirata alla forma perfetta dell’uovo, la lampada Egg impreziosisce la zona del lounge bar con tre pezzi posizionati sul bancone. Il prototipo, realizzato da C14, sarà in produzione con Artemide e consiste in una lampada a sospensione con struttura a gabbia in ottone bronzato in cui è inserito un piano di vetro strutturale. I primi prototipi prevedono un raffinato “gancio” direttamente ispirato da un idea della nostra amata Anna Maria Conticelli. La sorgente è nascosta da un vetro in pirex antiri-flesso satinato, cob led 2700 K, 15 W, sostenuto da un cavo in acciaio: una citazione degli antichi lampadari a soffitto (anche qui la mente corre a Ca’ Rezzonico e al salone centrale dei palazzi vene-ziani) in cui il vetro trasparente schermava la luce e il calore delle candele poste all’interno.

Un lavoro duro, quello di C14 sugli arredi, fatto di notti in studio, di disegni, di chiacchiere, di passi sbagliati e di curve che, inaspettatamente, si aprono sulla via tanto cercata: ogni dettaglio è però, per noi, la nota fondamentale per completare l’armonia. Abbiamo lavorato, con Theo Suh, perché LIA fosse uno spazio nuovo, stupefacente, con un’atmosfera piena di echi del passato ma nella quale risuonassero, forti, le voci di un futuro che è già vita: a voi dire se ci siamo riusciti.

Inspired by the perfect shape of an egg, the Egg lamp adds rich-ness to the lounge bar with a series of three examples positioned on the bar top. The prototype, created by C14, will be produced by Artemide and consists of a suspended light inside a bronzed brass cage which also contains a structural glass shelf. The first prototypes feature a sophisticated “hook” which was directly inspired an idea from our beloved Anna Maria Conticelli. The light source, hidden by anti-glare brushed pyrex, is a 2700 K, 15 W COB LED bulb connected to a steel cable: a clear reference to antique ceiling lights (here too one immediately thinks of Ca’ Rezzonico and the main hall in Venetian palaces) where clear glass shielded the light and heat of candles placed within.

That was a hard job we did on the furnishings, made up of late nights in the studio, endless sketches, talks, mistakes and going off on a tangent which unexpectedly opened up the avenue we’d been pursuing all along: every detail though, for us, is essential for the completion of the harmonious whole. We worked with Theo Suh because LIA is a new, stunning space, its atmosphere filled with echoes from the past, but also strong sounds, the voices of a future which is already life: we’ll let you decide if we pulled it off.

La mia Venezia odora di cipolla. Puzza d’aceto. Ha la consistenza cremosa del baccalà mantecato e quella croccante delle piccole lische che scrocchiano sotto i denti. “Cuel que se maña co gusto, no l fá mai mal”, dicono in laguna, e io mi fido.

Fra i mille aspetti emozionanti di questa città, a me piace e colpisce godere della sua storia attraverso i sapori e i profumi della sua cucina. La tradizione culinaria veneziana è antica di un millennio: costruita sulle acque, isolata, senza la possibilità di coltivare frumento, Venezia è comunque riuscita a sviluppare una gastronomia di prima altezza, che per molti secoli è stata tra le più importanti del mondo.

Il problema della conservazione dei cibi orienta l’evoluzione della cucina marciana: da una parte, infatti, qui non ci sono sotterranei e cantine asciutti in cui stipare gli alimenti, dall’altra i lunghi mesi di navigazione necessari al mantenimento di un’economia basata sul commercio per mare rendono inevitabile lo sviluppo di sistemi di conservazione alternativi.

La cucina della laguna veneta, quindi, si caratterizza sin dai suoi albori per l’abbondanza di spezie e di aceto impiegati nelle preparazioni: la più celebre ricetta locale, le sarde in saor, unisce il pesce alle cipolle, all’uvetta, ai pinoli e all’aceto, consentendo ai marinai di portare con sé in viaggio una pietanza gustosa, ricca di calorie e commestibile per diversi giorni dopo la partenza da casa.

Circa cinquemila tonnellate di spezie transitano ogni anno per il mercato di Rialto, nell’epoca d’oro di quel commercio: fino al 1500, quando il primato passa al Portogallo, Venezia è dominatrice degli scambi con l’Oriente. Semi, piccole bacche, foglie essiccate, minuscoli fiori dal profumo intenso vengono sapientemente miscelati dai maestri spezieri e confezionati in combinazioni già pronte all’uso da parte del cliente. I sacchetti veneziani sono celebri in tutto il mondo e il loro contenuto è ampiamente impiegato sulle tavole delle osterie.

“Venezia in cucina”, bellissimo saggio di Carla Coco, racconta la storia del gusto locale “dalle ostriche rinascimentali coperte d’oro alla moda seicentesca degli chef francesi, dalla cioccolata amara in tazza che impazzava nel Settecento all’aperitivo con lo spritz, importato dagli austriaci”. E ancora: “La cucina veneziana è una fusione, frutto del vivace scambio di merci, ricette, cuochi che caratterizza da sempre lo stile di questa città, multietnica per vocazione storica”.

Si sente il gusto del mare, seduti al bancone di un vecchio bacaro, ma filtrato da tanti e diversi sapori altrettanto penetranti, che raccontano una storia unica e avventurosa: mi piace immaginare la nostalgia, ma anche l’eccitazione, la sfida, la paura che agitavano il cuore del mercante in partenza per scoprire terre nuove, per assaggiare cibi sconosciuti, per arricchire se stesso, il suo popolo e la sua città.

A me piace cucinare e mi piace anche mangiare: la conoscenza, per me, passa - non solum verum etiam - dai sensi.

My Venice smells of onions. It reeks of vinegar. It has the smoothness of creamed cod and the crispiness of tiny fish scales against your teeth. In Venetian dialect, the saying goes “Cuel que se maña co gusto, no l fá mai mal” – what you eat with relish, will do you no harm, and I believe it.

From amongst the thousands of thrilling aspects regarding this city, I’m attracted to exploring its history via the flavours and perfumes of its food.

Traditional Venetian cooking goes back a thousand years: built on water, isolated, with no way to grow wheat, nevertheless Venice has managed to develop fine cuisine, which for many centuries was one of the most important in the whole world.

Problems relating to conserving food guided the development of Venice’s cooking: in fact, on the one hand there are no dry cellars in the city where food can be stored, and then, on the other, the long sea voyages on which the economy was based meant that alternative ways of storing food had to be developed.

So, right from the beginning, Venetian recipes were characterised by an abundance of spices and vinegar: the most famous local dish, in saor sardines, combines fish, onions, sultanas, pine nuts and vinegar, thus allowing sailors to take a tasty meal with them on ship, which was high in calories and edible for several more days out at sea.

Approximately, 5000 tonnes of spices flowed into Venice, to the Rialto market, each year during the golden years of the spice trade: up until 1500, when Portugal took the lead, Venice dominated trade with the Far East. Seeds, small berries, dried leaves and tiny flowers were artfully mixed by master spice merchants and packaged into blends that were ready to use by customers. Known as Sacchetti veneziani (Venetian sachets), they were famous all over the world and their content liberally used in restaurants.

Venezia in cucina, a wonderful volume by Carla Coco, tells the story of local food “ from Renaissance oysters covered in gold by French chefs following the seventeenth-century fashion, to bitter drinking chocolate which was all the rage in the eighteenth century, to the spritz aperitif, , imported from Austria”. Also: “Venetian food is real fusion cuisine, the result of an enthusiastic exchange of goods, recipes and cooks, this aspect has always characterised the style of this city, its historic multi-ethnic vocation ”.

You can taste the salty air, sitting at the bar of an old bacaro (traditional wine bar), it’s filtered by a wealth of different flavours which tell a unique story about adventure: I like to imagine the nostalgia, as well as the thrill, the sense of challenge and fear that stirred the hearts of merchants as they set sail to discover new lands, to taste new foodstuffs, to enrich themselves, their people and their city.

I love cooking and I also like eating: knowledge, I think, comes - non solum verum etiam – from the senses.

The new project by Maxxi tells the story of the development of con-temporary architecture as from the end of WW2: how did the idea of living change in only seventy years? Seven decades which changed changed people’s lifestyles and mindsets, making today’s world practically unrecognisable compared with that of the time. This our job, imagining lifestyles and it’s nice to observe the small steps which took us far. We’ll be there because our designs today rest on the revolutionary ideas of yesterday, that post-war period of poverty and dreams.

Come spesso accade, i meno giovani fra noi ricordano esattamente dov’erano e cosa stavano facendo quando il telegiornale ha mostrato le sconvolgenti immagini di un momento storico: quando il popolo della capitale tedesca ha abbattuto quel muro che, dal 1961, divideva la loro città in due parti, due mondi, due pesi e due misure.

There is a Korean phrase meaning “Even the sight of Mount Kumkang (one of the most beautiful mountains in Korea) must wait until after the meal”.

I would recommend a good Korean meal with Soju (one of Korea’s alcoholic drinks). It would be a great start.

INTER Cosa si trova alla base della sua scelta di raccogliere, in uno stesso showroom, numerosi e celebri brand italiani di arredamento?

Ho selezionato i brand con l’intento di portare al pubblico coreano le emozioni, la meraviglia, lo stupore che suscita il design italiano. Uno showroom deve, a mio avviso, operare una rigida selezione preventiva dei marchi da esporre, perché essi siano ben armonizzati fra loro, così da restituire un’idea di stile complessiva e armonica. La tradizione artigianale italiana ha una storia stupefacente: ci sono aziende che lavorano ancora a mano per ottenere la perfezione del loro prodotto.

Penso a Bevilacqua, per esempio: la produzione del loro velluto è tanto impegnativa che un artigiano non può tesserne più di mezzo metro al giorno.

Una lavorazione autenticamente artigianale è impegnativa, difficile, richiede molto tempo e conoscenze approfondite: la qualità, però, appaga i sensi e offre una resa che si mantiene inalterata a lungo. È importante che la memoria delle lavorazioni artigianali sia preservata e rispettata: è un patrimonio culturale di enorme valore.

Obiettivo del LIA è portare tutto questo in Corea.

Che valori vuole trasmettere tramite LIA? Un giornalista, intervistando il violoncellista Pau Casals allora novantenne, gli chiede: “Perché, dopo tutto quello che ha realizzato nella sua vita, ancora pratica sei ore al giorno?”. E il maestro: “Per amore. Oggi, il lavoro mi piace ancor più che in passato”. Quello che conta non è (solo) il prodotto finito, ma la passione che si mette nel farlo. La soddisfazione che si prova ammirando un oggetto perfettamente realizzato non è nulla in confronto al piacere che regala il lavoro artigianale nel suo svolgimento, che coinvolge l’ispirazione, la competenza, la manualità, il gusto artistico e la sapienza tecnica del singolo. LIA vuole testimoniare e, se possibile, insegnare alle nuove generazioni questo gusto per il saper fare.

What prompted your decision to bring together numerous famous Italian furniture brands in the same showroom?

I chose the brands with the intention of showing Korean people how Italian design arouses wonder, amazement and excitement. A showroom should, in my opinion, be very strict concerning the brands it puts on display, they should fit into a harmonious whole, so as to create an idea of an overall, balanced style. Traditional, Italian craftsmanship has a spectacular history: there are companies which still work by hand to achieve perfection in their products. Take Bevilacqua, for instance: the production of their velvet is so demanding that a craftsman cannot weave more than half a metre a day. An authentic artisanal process is demanding, difficult, it is time-consuming and requires specialist skills: the quality, however, gratifies the senses and offers a return which stands the test of time.

It’s so very important to preserve and respect craftsmanship: it is cultural heritage and has enormous value. LIA’s aim is to introduce all this to Korea .

What kind of values do you want to express via LIA? A journalist, when interviewing the violinist Pau Casals, who was ninety at the time, asked: “Why, after all you’ve achieved in your life, do you still practise six hours a day?”. And the maestro replied: “For love. Nowadays, I enjoy working more than I did in the past”. What counts, is not (only) the finished product, but the passion you put into making it. The satisfaction you feel when admiring a perfectly executed object is nothing compared to the pleasure afforded by craftsmanship process which includes inspiration, skill, manual dexterity, artistic taste and technical knowhow. Come nasce il progetto per LIA? LIA Lounge è il risultato di una moderna interpretazione del sentimento di Venezia.

Di Venezia riassunta in un’idea. La chiave interpretativa che abbiamo scelto è stata quella di restituire la modernità della città con lo spazio del LIA. Il pavimento dello showroom, per esempio, è una rivisitazione di quello di Piazza San Marco ottenuto con la collaborazione di Trend Group: abbiamo voluto ricreare i colori e la materialità dell’originale. La Tessitura Bevilacqua ha fornito stoffe preziose, incorniciate come un quadro, realizzate come ai tempi degli antichi Dogi. I pezzi d’arredo uniscono materiali diversi come marmo, vetro e metallo in un’armonia di consistenze giustapposte. Il progetto LIA nasce con l’idea di creare uno spazio in cui potessero trovare posto arte, design, performance, fotografia: ho voluto un ambiente che si adattasse a ogni esigenza, quasi una pelle capace di assumere, a seconda del contesto, sfumature nuove ma sempre autentiche.

Avete progettato il lighting design del Duomo di Milano nei primi anni 2000. Cosa ricorda di quel lavoro?

Io amo gli scacchi, la matematica, la fisica e la luce: i primi tre elementi che ho citato sono alla base del mio lavoro sul quarto. Il Duomo e Piazza della Scala sono capolavori architettonici molto rappresentativi, famosi in tutto il mondo: curarne il progetto di illuminazione è stato, ovviamente, assai impegnativo sia sotto il profilo tecnico-artistico, sia dal punto di vista della pressione che avvertivo su di me e sul mio lavoro. Ricordo, però, che sono stato guidato da un’ispirazione profonda, molto sentita, e questo mi ha aiutato a superare le oggettive difficoltà del momento. Il premio internazionale vinto nel 2001, assegnato proprio per il miglior intervento per l’innovazione tecnologica applicata ai beni culturali, è stato una bellissima sorpresa e mi ha confermato la correttezza delle mie intuizioni.

How did the LIA project come about?

The LIA Lounge is the result of a modern interpretation of the sentiment of Venice.

Venice encapsulated within an idea. Our interpretation was to restore the city’s modernity via the LIA space. The showroom floor, for example, is a reworking of the pavement found in St Mark’s Square, we created it in collaboration with Trend Group: we wanted to recreate the colours and materials of the original. Tessitura Bevilacqua supplied the precious fabrics, framed like a painting, and still produced today using the same methods that were used centuries ago. The furniture combines different materials, such as marble, glass and metal to form a harmonious whole of juxtaposed consistencies . The LIA project was born from the idea of creating a space where art, design, performance and photography could find a home: I wanted an environment that could adapt to any need, almost like a skin that that according to the context could assume a different, yet always authentic, guise .

You did the lighting design for Milan Cathedra almost 20 years ago.

What do you remember about that project?

I love chess, maths, physics and light: the first three elements I mentioned form the basis of my work on the fourth. The Cathedral and Piazza della Scala are very prominent architectural masterpieces, famous the world over: being in charge of the lighting design was, obviously, extremely demanding from a technical-artistic perspective as well as in terms of the pressure I felt personally and professionally.

I do remember however, that I was guided by a profound sense of inspiration, this helped me overcome objective difficulties at the time. The International award I won in 2001, for the best intervention in technological innovation applied to cultural heritage, was a wonderful surprise and confirmed that my intuition was right.

TREND Group nasce nel 2000 da un’idea di Pino Bisazza che, insieme ai suoi collaboratori più esperti, decide di dar vita a una nuova realtà in grado di sintetizzare - nel rispetto dell’ambiente la tradizione artistica italiana con le più innovative tecnologie produttive. Oggi quell’idea si è trasformata in un’azienda che si posiziona tra i leader nella produzione di tessere di mosaico di vetro colorato, smalti veneziani, tessere a foglia d’oro 24K e agglomerati di vetro, quarzo e granite. Orsoni Venezia 1888 rappresenta il fiore all’occhiello di TREND e produce la linea di mosaici più esclusivi del gruppo. L’antica fornace Orsoni è il simbolo dell’eccellenza dell’artigianato veneziano dove, oggi come nel 1888, si ripetono gli stessi gesti che portano alla creazione degli smalti veneziani e dei mosaici a foglia d’oro 24 carati. Un bagaglio culturale importante, che ritroviamo nel gusto e nell’eleganza di tutta la collezione di prodotti a marchio TREND. Proprio quest’anno Orsoni Venezia 1888 entra a far parte come socio fondatore dell’associazione Alto Artigianato Venezia con l’intento di preservare, sviluppare e diffondere le attività e i prodotti unici che rappresentano un legame tra cultura, artigianato e la città di Venezia. Tutti obiettivi già profondamente radicati nella sua passione per l’eccellenza e raggiungibili solo in presenza di un approccio sostenibile e rispettoso del territorio. La “Biblioteca del colore” di Orsoni è un luogo senza tempo che conserva più di 3.500 diverse tonalità e sfumature di smalti veneziani in pasta di vetro dalla quale è nato il celebre pannello realizzato dal suo fondatore Angelo Orsoni. Quest’opera d’arte è stata presentata per la prima volta all’Esposizione Universale di Parigi del 1889. Anni dopo, fu di ispirazione ad Antonio Gaudí, l’architetto spagnolo, per la decorazione della Sagrada Familia con l’impiego di smalti Orsoni. Fin dal principio della sua attività, Orsoni produce i mosaici impiegati nel restauro della Basilica di San Marco: oggi è l’unica fornace che può produrre “l’Oro San Marco” destinato al restauro artistico della Basilica. Il nome di Orsoni è legato alla realizzazione di importanti opere come il Trocadero e la Basilica del Sacro Cuore di Parigi, la cattedrale di Saint Paul a Londra, la Tomba di Rudolf Nureyev e molti altri capolavori musivi della cultura architettonica araba e orientale. Gruppo C14 ha interpretato perfettamente il mood dello spazio LIA riportandolo alla tradizione veneziana espressa in chiave contemporanea. I prodotti TREND Group si inseriscono molto bene nel concept: TREND Origina grazie all’estetica moderna e alle elevate prestazioni tecniche è il materiale ideale per i pavimenti che, con l’inserimento degli smalti veneziani, creano un disegno unico ispirato a Piazza San Marco. I bagni realizzati in mosaico sono un’interpretazione di design dalle forme suggestive. L’azienda è stata entusiasta di incontrare la creatività e la professionalità di C14 per realizzare lo showroom LIA, un progetto che rispecchia i nostri valori di artigianalità, sostenibilità e etica del lavoro.

TREND Group was born in 2000 from an idea by Pino Bisazza who, togeth-er with his most expert associates, decided to launch a new idea able to com-bine – whilst still respecting the environment – artistic Italian tradition with cutting-edge production technology. Today, that idea has turned into one of the leading companies in the field of mosaic tesserae made of coloured glass, Venetian enamel, 24-carat gold leaf tesserae and agglomerations of glass, quartz and granite.

Orsoni Venezia 1888 is the feather in TREND’s hat and produces the most exclusive line of mosaics in the group. The ancient Orsoni furnace is a sym-bol of excellence in Venetian craftsmanship where, today just as in 1888, the same gestures are repeated to create Venetian enamel and 24-carat gold leaf mosaics. A hefty cultural legacy, the evidence of which can be found in the tasteful and elegant Trend product collections.

In fact this year Orsoni Venezia 1888 will become a founding partner of the Alto Artigianato Venezia Association, whose aim is to preserve, develop and spread unique products and businesses which link culture, craftsmanship and the city of Venice. Objectives which are already deeply rooted in its pas-sion for excellence and which are only achievable in the presence of a re-spectful, sustainable approach.

Orsoni’s “Library of Colour” is a timeless space housing over 3500 different colours and shades of Venetian glass enamel and which inspired the famous panel created by the company’s founder Angelo Orsoni. This work of art was first presented at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. Years lat-er, it acted as inspiration for Antonio Gaudí, the Spanish architect, and the decoration of the Sagrada Familia using Orsoni glass enamel.

Right from the very start Orsoni has produced the mosaics used in the reno-vation of St Mark’s Basilica: today it is the only furnace which may produce “San Marco gold” destined for the artistic renovation of the Basilica.

The Orsoni name is linked to the creation of important works such as the Trocadero the Sacre Coeur in Paris, Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London, Ru-dolf Nureyev’s tomb and many other mosaic masterpieces from Arab and Eastern architectural cultures .

Gruppo C14 perfectly interpreted the mood of the LIA space and expressed Venetian tradition from a contemporary point of view.

The TREND Group products sit very well with the concept: thanks to the modern aesthetics and elevated technical performance TREND Origina is the ideal material for the flooring which, with the addition of Venetian enamel , creates a unique pat-tern inspired by Saint Mark’s Square. The mosaics in the bathrooms are an interpretation of a design with seductive shapes .

The company was very happy to experience the creativity and professional-ism of C14 and create the LIA showroom, it is a project which mirrors our values of craftsmanship, sustainability and work ethic.

VENINI prosegue il suo percorso di espansione globale, con la sua significativa presenza nel nuovo e prestigioso show room LIA in Corea del Sud a Seoul, inaugurato il 1 ottobre 2019. Venini, storica e rinomata fornace, è una bandiera nel mondo del made in Italy e dell’antica arte vetraria di Murano. La sua tradizione parla di opere d’arte vetraria ed importanti lampadari artistici che dal 1921 donano emozioni. Arte, Colore, Qualità, Unicità e Artigianalità sono i suoi punti di forza che, grazie anche all’incontro tra sapienti maestri soffiatori e designer di fama internazionale, hanno contribuito e contribuiscono in maniera significativa alla cultura del vetro. Le opere di Venini sono presentate nel suggestivo e accogliente spazio, pensato per essere punto di riferimento per il mercato locale, in cui il dna di VENINI, dal 2016 parte del Gruppo Damiani, si integra in perfetta armonia. Fra i prodotti Venini spiccano importanti chandelier, fra cui l’Esprit sferico da ben due metri di diametro, complessa opera tecnica e vetraria ricca di decori floreali, e pezzi scultorei provenienti dal Museo Venini fra cui opere di Tadao Ando, Alessandro Mendini ed Ettore Sottsass, per citarne solo alcuni. In questo percorso espositivo Venini ha avuto il piacere di affiancarsi allo studio di progettazione C14 con cui ha potuto condividere la passione per il design, l’ alto artigianato, la ricercatezza e più in generale per il bello, che hanno condotto al risultato di un luogo all’insegna della raffinatezza e della sobrietà in cui VENINI mette in scena la sua passione per il vetro e racconta il suo modo di interpretare l’abitare e il décor attraverso la secolare tradizione artigianale che la distingue.

VENINI continues with its plan for global expansion with its strong presence within the new, prestigious LIA showroom in Seoul, South Korea, which opened on 1 October 2019. Venini, the historical, renowned furnace, is a standard bearer the world over for Italian made products and the ancient art of glass-making from Murano. Its tradition consists of glass masterpieces and important artistic lamps which have excited people since 1921. Its strong points are Art, Colour, Quality, Originality and Craftsmanship, and together with the skillful union between, master glassblowers and internationally renowned designers, the company has contributed significantly to the culture of glass. Venini pieces are displayed in the characteristic, welcoming space, designed to be a point of reference for the local market, where the Venini DNA, part of the Damiani Group since 2016, is perfectly integrated.

From amongst all the different Venini products, the stunning chandeliers really stand out, such as the spherical Esprit, with its diameter of 2 metres, it is a perfect example of technical, glass work, rich with floral decorations. Then there are sculptural pieces from the Venini Museum, including works by Tadao Ando, Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sotsass, to name just a few.

During this display journey Venini had the pleasure of working alongside the C14 studio, with whom they share a passion for design, fine craftsmanship and generally speaking, for beauty. The result was a place in pursuit of class and understatement where VENINI displays its passion for glass and tells the story of how the company interprets interiors via the centuries-old craft which distinguishes it.

La Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua è stata fondata a Venezia attorno al 1700, anche se la tradizione tessile della famiglia è iniziata molti secoli prima, almeno nel 1499. Sugli originali telai appartenenti alla Scuola della Seta della Serenissima ancora oggi si continua a tessere a mano il prezioso velluto soprarizzo con le stesse tecniche e lo stesso livello qualitativo imposto dai Dogi. L’archivio storico Bevilacqua conta più di 3500 disegni ed è fonte d’ispirazione per i più famosi stilisti e designer di tutto il mondo. In una continuità tra passato e presente alla produzione manuale, che tuttora ha luogo nella sede storica dell’azienda affacciata sul Canal Grande, dagli anni ‘30 è stata affiancata una produzione meccanica eseguita sempre su disegni esclusivi Bevilacqua con l’impiego di particolari tecniche per garantire la qualità ed il prestigio del marchio. In questo contesto si inserisce la collaborazione con LIA, brand che non si propone solo di importare il Made in Italy di lusso in Corea, ma un vero e proprio modo di vivere e di concepire l’ambiente, in cui gli oggetti d’arredamento si possono considerare dei pezzi d’arte creati dalle eccellenze italiane ed essere fonte di ispirazione per chi li vive.

C14 è stato perfetto interprete di questo sentire, arredando gli spazi della Lounge con alcuni dei tessuti Bevilacqua più iconici in un concept moderno che segna una continuità tra passato e presente, in cui il passato è denso di storia ma non per questo vecchio, ed il presente guarda alle nuove tendenze senza per questo perdere le radici con la tradizione ed il savoir faire dell’alto artigianato italiano.

Rubelli nasce a Venezia nel 1889. Nel corso dei secoli l’azienda veneziana ha saputo rinnovarsi senza mai rinnegare le proprie origini. Da sempre porta avanti una scrupolosa attività di ricerca finalizzata a realizzare tessuti di altissima qualità, in grado di coniugare estetica e funzionalità. A inizio 2019 abbiamo lanciato un’ampia collezione di tessuti innovativi e performanti che conservano intatti l’essenza e la preziosità di quelli “artigianali”. Sono textures ad alte prestazioni, resistenti all’usura, lavabili in acqua, solidi nel colore anche in esterni, resistenti al fuoco, pensate per progetti indoor e outdoor e soluzioni lineari ed eleganti sia residenziali che contract. La nostra azienda segue un processo di continua innovazione, rimanendo però sempre “fedele” alla tradizione.

Oggi, nella nostra tessitura di Cucciago (presso Como), accanto a 31 telai jacquard elettronici di ultima generazione sono ancora presenti e perfettamente funzionanti quattro telai a mano del ‘700 trasferiti dalla laguna negli anni ’90. Il valore aggiunto del nostro brand è proprio che è 100% Made in Italy e questo va di pari passo con l’eccellenza dei materiali e della produzione. All’incontro con C14, al Salone di Milano un paio di anni fa, è seguita subito una fortunata collaborazione.

Per lo showroom LIA Rubelli ha messo a disposizione tutta la propria esperienza nell’interior decoration grazie a un team interno di designer e architetti. Il concept LIA è incentrato sul prodotto italiano, artigianale e di alta qualità, che sono anche i valori che da sempre contraddistinguono le nostre collezioni. Prodotti unici che nascono in Italia dalle capaci mani di maestri artigiani. L’unicità di un prodotto fatto a mano, esclusivo, fortemente personalizzabile grazie all’ampia gamma di tessuti disponibili. La possibilità di creare un Lifestyle completo che oltre a due brand di mobili include il tessile, le carte da parati, i tappeti e l’illuminazione. Il risultato conseguito con LIA è, per noi, del tutto soddisfacente: le scelte fatte in termini di brand sono coerenti con il concept di base e gli showroom rappresentano al meglio l’identità di ogni azienda. Rubelli was founded in Venice in 1889. Over the centuries the Venetian company has managed to reinvent itself yet still remain true to its origins. It has always carried out scrupulous research aimed at producing premium quality fabrics which are both beautiful and functional. At the beginning of 2019 we launched a wide collection of highperformance innovative fabrics which perfectly encapsulate the essence and preciousness of “artisanal” fabrics. They are hard-wearing, washable, highly pigmented, fire-resistant, designed for indoors and outdoors, linear, elegant solutions and residential as well as corporate projects .

Our company follows a process of constant innovation, while always remaining faithful to tradition. Today, in our weaving factory in Cucciago (Como), next to the 31 state-of-the-art electronic jacquard looms still stand four eighteenth- century perfectly functioning hand looms that were transferred here from Venice in the 1990’s.

Our brand’s added value is that the products are 100% Italian-made and this goes hand in hand with the excellence of the materials and the production.

After we met C14, at Milan Design Week a couple of years ago, there followed a fortuitous working collaboration.

For the LIA showroom Rubelli offered all its experience in interior decoration, thanks to its in-house team of designers and architects.

The LIA concept focuses on Italian artisanal, high-quality products, qualities which have always characterised our collections. Unique products which are produced in Italy from the skillful hands of master craftsmen. The uniqueness of a handmade item, exclusive, highly customisable thanks to a wide range of fabrics. The chance to create a complete lifestyle which, apart from two furniture brands, also includes textiles, wallpaper, carpets and lighting.

The result we achieved with LIA was, in our opinion, very satisfying: the choice of brands is consistent with the basic concept and the showrooms fully represent the identity of each brand. C14 and the team at LIA were essential to the success of the project in spite of the tight deadline.

Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua was founded in Venice around 1700, although the family’s textile tradition started many centuries before that, at least in 1499. The original looms at Venice’s School of Silk are still used today to weave precious soprarizzo velvet using the same techniques and to the same standard of quality imposed by the Doges. Bevilacqua’s historical archives boast over 3500 different patterns and designs and are a source of inspiration for famous designers the world over. The continuous flow between past and present and manual production, which still takes place in the historical location of the company overlooking the Grand Canal, since the Thirties has been flanked by mechanical production. The exclusive Bevilacqua designs are the same but the process includes particular techniques to guarantee the quality and prestige long associated with the brand. It is within this context that the professional collaboration with LIA was inserted, a brand which does not only focus on the importation of luxury Italian-made products to Korea, but presents an actual lifestyle, a way of understanding interiors, where furnishings are perceived as works of art created by Italian excellence and sources of inspiration for people.

C14 was able to interpret this mindset perfectly by using some of Bevilacqua’s most iconic fabrics for the lounge areas to create a modern concept which underlines the continuity between past and present, where the past, while dense with history is not old, and the present looks forward to new trends without forgetting its roots in tradition and the savoirfaire of fine Italian craftsmanship.
