Curried prawns with toasted rice and Mango Chutney of Trattoria Cammillo 18
TUSCAN DISH
TRATTORIA CAMMILLO’S CURRIED PRAWNS Let’s discover the secret ingredients of this favourite dish served by the historic Florentine trattoria TEXT Martina Olivieri
T
rattoria Cammillo’s curried prawns with toasted rice and Mango Chutney are a landmark in the city. They have been serving this evergreen favourite since 1950, when Florence had a large English-speaking community. The dish’s added value is the curry sauce, a culinary preparation that has become an integral part of English cuisine as the influence of the former Indian colony. Trattoria Cammillo’s sauce features a perfect balance of different curry blends, while the mango chutney (another culinary component the British acquired from the former Indian colony) is a special recipe,
and the outcome of extensive and thorough research. This dish (also proposed with a chicken variant) has fascinated customers from all over the world for years. It is a real must-try treat in the city. Preparation. The recipe is simple; the ingredients are what makes the difference. The prawns must be fresh and large. Each portion requires 120/130 g of shelled prawns tossed in flour and quickly “browned” in a pan with a little oil. Then, for each portion, add a spoonful of yellow curry powder and a glass of fresh milk cream, keeping a low flame until the mixture becomes creamy. Boil the rice in salted wa-
ter and drain without overcooking, then grease with sunflower oil and place in a baking dish large enough to allow a 2-3 cm thick layer. Oven bake at 200°C to brown the surface. Serve the rice on a flat plate, presenting it as a ‘doughnut’ with the centre filled with prawns and sauce. Accompany it with mango chutney... a genuine treat! What are you waiting for to try it? Whether for a business or leisure lunch, a stop during your cultural visits, or a more intimate dinner, Trattoria Cammillo will welcome you with the style and timeless flavours that have distinguished it for over seventy years. 19

fashion triangle composed of Via de’ Tornabuoni, Via della Vigna Nuova and Via degli Strozzi: the city’s downtown shopping streets lined with the major Italian and international designer boutiques. Via de’ Tornabuoni is definitely the luxury shopper’s paradise. The imposing Palazzo Spini Feroni, which houses the Salvatore Ferragamo boutique and museum, is the virtual starting point of our tour. A string of fabulous fashion boutiques follows: to the left and to the right Burberry, Celine, Saint Laurent, Gucci, Prada, the Di Loro Piana collections… And the elegant two-floor Dior shop, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Max Mara, the great names of high jewelry such as Tiffany, Omega, Bulgari, Cartier, Pomellato, Damiani, next to historic jeweler’s shops like
Fani Gioielli, the authorized Rolex dealer. From the Santa Trinita Bridge and by continuing down the street to its very end, we reach Piazza Antinori, where the Hermès, Ermanno Scervino and Isabel Marant boutiques are located.
THREE STREETS DEDICATED TO DE LUXE SHOPPING AND FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP CRAFTSMAN SHIP On the nearby Via della Spada, the cashmere scarves and shawls by Faliero Sarti, Dr. Vranjes’ fragrances, the colored home accessories by Mario Luca Giusti (both having another shop on Via della Vigna Nuova). Via della Vigna Nuova, which runs perpendicular
to Via de’ Tornabuoni, houses great fashion names such as Etro, jeweler’s like Giovanni Raspini, the leather creations of high craftsmanship by Benheart. Via degli Strozzi is lined with the Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Dolce&Gabbana, La Perla, Emporio Armani and Patrizia Pepe boutiques. Just steps away, on Via dei Pescioni, the sartorial menswear collections by designer Stefano Ricci, with high quality, artisan processing techniques and a Florentine heart being the brand’s core elements. Not located in the fashion triangle area but definitely worth a visit are the Luisaviaroma boutique- the city’s bestknown multi-brand store, the kingdom of Andrea Panconesi whose shop windows dictate the fashion trends every season- and the Miu Miu boutique, both on Via Roma. 25
LET’S DISCOVER FLORENCE WITH RAFFAELE BIAGIOTTI
As a Chiavi d’Oro Concierge in Florence, here are a few tips to those visiting the city to help them get the most out of their stay.

Born and raised in Sesto Fiorentino, a town located six miles from Florence, I am 44 years old. Passionate about good food and art, I have been always attracted to the hotel business and professional hospitality. Looking back on my career, I learned the basics at the top: I began my first hotel experience in 2008 at the grand opening of the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, where I was hired as a Guest Service. I moved to the Brunelleschi Hotel in 2011, working as a
Receptionist/Concierge, and 3 years ago I achieved one of my goals: the Golden Keys. Special thanks for this to Sergio Iannotta, whom I call my ‘Maestro’. In my private life, I have a 10-year marriage to keep alive. In the spare time, I drive a Vespa, DJ, and take photographs. I can often be found out and about with my DSLR, looking for original pictures to take. And, last but not least, I am the 24-hour non-stop father of an active 7 year-old.

STORIES OF FLORENCE Explore the mysteries, legends and secret sites on a city tour TEXT Martina Olivieri

n open-air museum. Florence is ever amazing and fascinating with its world famous monuments. But the Renaissance city is also a treasure trove of mysteries and hidden secrets. Take a walk looking upwards and observe the most famous buildings. We shall take you on a journey to discover gems and curiosities that will enrich your stay in the city. LA BERTA Nestled as it is in the heart of one of the most beautiful historic city centres in the world, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore risks being overlooked by
passing visitors. Yet it is one of the city’s oldest places of worship, dating back as far as the 8th century. If you happen to pass by the namesake square, at the
FLORENCE IS A TREASURE TROVE OF MYSTERIES AND HIDDEN SECRETS corner with Via de’ Cerretani, look for the severed bell tower, and raise your eyes: you will meet the gaze of a legendary character in-
tent on scrutinising you in turn. The Florentines call it La Berta. The story goes that it has been there since 1326 because of the scientist Cecco d’Ascoli, following a curse he cast on a woman who, by denying him water, had prevented him from escaping the flames. Another legend identifies Berta as a fruit seller who donated a bell to the church to inform the workers with its chimes when the city gates were opening and closing. THE HORNED OX What is a bovine head doing among the statues adorning the Duomo? According to tradition, the statue could be one of the builders’ trib29

A JOURNEY TO DISCOVER GEMS AND CURIOSITIES IN THE CITY utes to the various draught animals used to transport the materials needed to build the Cathedral. However, there is another, more playful, version, according to which the head of the bovine (an ox) is said to be evidence of a betrayal. A foreman working on the cathedral building site is said to have had an affair with the wife of a baker, whose shop was located nearby. When the adultery was discovered, the baker denounced both his wife and her lover to the Ecclesiastical Court. Legend has it that it was the master builder himself who placed the bovine head facing the windows of the jealous baker to daily remind him of the betrayal. GIAMBOLOGNA’S DEVIL At a corner of Palazzo Vecchietti, precisely between Via de’ Vecchietti and Via Strozzi, we find a mysterious little devil keeping an eye on passers-by. It is a flag-carrying devil (the orig30
inal by Giambologna is in the Bardini Museum), commissioned by Bernardo Vecchietti, former owner of the palace, to be installed on the site of an event linked to the life of Saint Peter the Martyr. The Saint was interrupted while preaching by a wild black horse, which could only have been the devil. He managed to immobilise the animal with prayers and crosses. Whether it is myth or reality is of little importance, the little devil is there in memory of this bizarre event. FACE SCULPTED BY MICHELANGELO In Piazza della Signoria, just to the right of the entrance door to Palazzo Vecchio, near Via della Ninna, there is a portrait on the wall of a man in profile. The face bears the signature of Michelangelo Buonarroti, but nothing is known of whom it portrays. Some believe it was somebody who bothered Michelangelo whenever they
met, and others think it is the face of a man condemned to the pillory. THE EVER OPEN WINDOW In Piazza della Santissima Annunziata we find Palazzo Grifoni, which is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman. The story goes that the woman lived in the building with her beloved husband, but one day he was called to arms with the other Florentine nobles. At the moment of departure, she looked out of the window of the house to greet him and watched him leave until he disappeared among the palaces. From then on, the woman never moved from the window, which was always open, and for months she watched the piazza day and night in the hope of seeing her beloved return. Waiting and despair led to her death. When, after her funeral, her relatives went to the house to clean it up, they also closed the famous window, but this gave rise

IN BORGO OGNISSANTI THERE IS A VERY UNUSUAL BALCONY to strange phenomena such as objects flying and furniture moving. The relatives, therefore, decided to reopen the window, which remains open to this day. It is the one on the first floor, towards the corner that links the palace to the Loggia dei Servi di Maria. YOU CANNOT COUNT THE BEES On the back of the pedestal of the equestrian statue of Ferdinando I de’ Medici, in the centre of Piazza Santissima Annunziata, we find a swarm of bees arranged in concentric circles around the queen bee. According
34
to tradition, the bee represents the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (headed by Ferdinand I himself), while the bees are the faithful and industrious Florentines. The work is particular as it seems impossible to count the bees without touching or pointing at them due to the concentric circles and very similar figures that make one lose count. Whoever succeeds is supposed to be extremely fortunate. THE WRONG STONE Facing Palazzo Pitti, move to the left of the entrance door, just after the second window at the bottom you will see a very long stone (it is said to be about ten metres long) flanked by one much shorter than the others. They are not here by chance. Apparently Luca Pitti himself wanted them. The longest stone of all, in fact, symbolises him, joyful and powerful. The shorter one represents his rivals, small and insignificant, envious that Luca Pitti
had been able to accumulate enough wealth and success to build such a princely palace. What he did not know was that his rivals were the Medici themselves, who later became the masters of the palace! THE INVERTED BALCONY In Borgo Ognissanti, at number 12, there is a very unusual balcony featuring inverted architectural elements. The reason for this strange construction seems to have been a confrontation between the owner of the house, one Baldovinetti, who wanted a beautiful and imposing balcony, and Alessandro de’ Medici, who issued an order in 1530 forbidding architectural elements that were too conspicuous and cumbersome, since the streets of the city were rather narrow. Baldovinetti refused to renounce his balcony and, finally, Alessandro de’ Medici authorised him to build the balcony but on one condition, that it would be inverted.

THE FEAST OF SAN GIOVANNI
What’s happening in Florence on 24 June, the day of the city’s patron saint TEXT Teresa Favi
F
lorence’s patron San Giovanni (St John) is commemorated in the city on 24 June. Like any ancient religious festival, the celebrations are a mixture of sacred and secular, and the day has become an occasion of collective recreation for citizens and tourists alike. MORNING: CEREMONY OF THE CANDLES The heart of the festivities is Piazza del Duomo, which sees the Procession of the Florentine Republic, with the city authorities, flag-bearers and musicians parading through the historic centre to the Baptistery.
Here they offer a symbolic gift of candles to the Patron Saint, which are received by the Archbishop of Florence before celebrating Holy Mass in the Cathedral.
FROM THE MORNING TO THE NIGHT HOW TO ENJOY THE 24 JUNE IN FLORENCE AFTERNOON: CALCIO STORICO Calcio Storico is to Florence as the Palio is to Siena. It’s played in teams and there
are three matches in June, two semi-finals and the final, held on the big day, the feast of San Giovanni on 24 June. The rules are closer to rugby than football; the venue is the picturesque Piazza Santa Croce. Fifty minutes of strength, passion, sweat, fatigue and combat (apparently the origins of the game were to keep Roman legionaries fit in peacetime), played in the vivid colours of long ago, which rapidly give way to bare torsos clashing with force and fury on a thick layer of sand which cushions falls but also makes movement heavier. The game features a great deal 37
TRADITIONS
CALCIO STORICO AND FIREWORKS ARE THE STARS OF THE FEAST of physical contact, the setting is spectacular and the atmosphere - especially prior to the start - is solemn and charged with adrenaline. This traditional city event is disputed between teams from the four historical quarters: the Whites of Santo Spirito, the Reds of Santa Maria Novella, the Greens of San Giovanni and the Blues of Santa Croce. The game is played to commemorate Charles V’s siege of the city in 1530, to overturn the Florentine Republic and restore the Medici. At Carnival time in that year, the Florentines organised a match in Piazza Santa Croce as a demonstration of their pride and a gesture of defiance to the enemy army. Ever since, albeit with ups and downs and a long interruption in the 18th and 19th centuries, the tradition has continued. 38
EVENING: THE ‘FOCHI’ From 22:00 to 23:00 on 24 June, Florentine locals and visitors have just one thought in their heads: to watch the Fochi, fireworks, the spectacular pyrotechnics that light up the night sky for San Giovanni. The Fochi are set off in Piazzale Michelangelo, making them visible from many places in the city. The best places to enjoy the show are the banks of the Arno, but also restaurants and bars with terraces on the rooftops of buildings in the historic centre. Alternatively, head to Fiesole, on a hill to the north-east of the city, and watch the fireworks from a little further away. Just one piece of advice: from late afternoon, the traffic around Piazzale Michelangelo and other central areas is affected, and some streets closed. So we recommend getting around on foot or, if you’re travelling by car, avoid the area.

STROLLING AMIDST BEAUTY A walk exploring the most beautiful monuments of Florence TEXT Martina Olivieri
Florence was once called the beautiful. A well-deserved epithet, since its streets, squares and buildings jealously preserve the best expression of the Italian Renaissance. The Tuscan capital is steeped in history and culture, art and beauty, always alluring authors, architects, poets and artists. Since there are so many sites to visit, we shall help you discover the city’s must see monuments. SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE CATHEDRAL We shall start from here. With its dome, the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is the most iconic of Florence’s monuments. Together with the nearby baptistery and bell tower, it forms one of the most precious
architectural complexes of the Italian Renaissance. Construction works on the Cathedral commenced in the late 13th century, carried out by Arnolfo di Cambio, and were completed
HISTORY, ART, AND BEAUTY: THE CITY’S MUST SEE MONUMENTS IN FLORENCE two centuries later with the extraordinary dome. With its impressive beauty and featuring a diameter of 46 m, the dome is the architectural and engi-
neering masterpiece of Filippo Brunelleschi. The white, green and red marble façade echoes the style of Giotto’s 14th-century bell tower. PONTE VECCHIO, THE OLD BRIDGE The symbol of the city, it is the most famous bridge over the Arno, and also the only one that was not destroyed during World War II. A treasure trove of the city’s most famous goldsmiths, these charming little shops line the central passageway. The Vasari Corridor runs above them, along the east side. SANTA TRINITÀ BRIDGE Other bridges within easy reach of the city centre include Ponte alle Grazie, Ponte alla Carraia and, last but not least, 45

Ponte Santa Trinità, which is renowned for its beautiful sunsets. It is centrally placed in a late 19th century painting by Henry Holiday entitled Dante and Beatrice. The work by the English painter Henry Holiday refers to an episode in the Vita Nova, and shows Dante meeting three women on the Ponte di Santa Trinità. The one in the centre is Beatrice. The original bridge by Bartolomeo Ammannati was destroyed during World War II. The present one was rebuilt in 1958, with the original statues of the Four Seasons placed at the two entrances. PALAZZO BARTOLINI SALIMBENI A historic building located on 46
Florence’s Piazza di Santa Trinita. Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni was designed by Baccio d’Agnolo, and marks a turning point in residential architecture in the city; its features were initially criticised, but widely reused and developed in later centuries. Since 2018 the building has been home to the Roberto Casamonti Collection of modern and contemporary art from the late 20th century to the current day. THE UFFIZI LOGGIA The niches under the porticos of the Uffizi Gallery were originally designed by Vasari as purely architectural elements, while Cosimo I wanted sculptures of “Florentines who had distinguished themselves in
battle, letters and civil government”. Only in the early half of the 19th century, on the initiative of the printer Vincenzo Batelli (1786-1858), were the 28 marble statues of illustrious figures chosen from the political, artistic, literary, scientific, judiciary and religious scenes installed. THE VASARI CORRIDOR The elevated corridor linking the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti was built by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de’ Medici and runs for about a kilometre above the city and the river. It enters palaces, encircles the Torre de’ Mannelli, overlooks the Church of Santa Felicità and reaches Pitti and Boboli. While waiting for the new fittings to restore its origi-

nal function of connecting the Uffizi and Pitti Palace, admire it from below during our walk. NEPTUNE’S FOUNTAIN It is the city’s first public work, commissioned by Cosimo I to celebrate the Medici’s maritime achievements. It stands in Piazza della Signoria. The majestic statue of Neptune in white Carrara marble, affectionately called Biancone by the Florentines, is the work of Bartolomeo Ammannati. The god stands on a chariot drawn by four horses and surrounded by a court of bronze sea gods. In addition to Ammannati, numerous sculptors took part in the overall work, adopting the approach of exploiting the nature and colour of a wide variety of materials. The result was subjected to fierce criticism from the time of its completion, while today it is seen as an iconic example of the renewal of Mannerist sculpture shortly after the mid-16th century, as opposed to the prevailing academicism typical of Michelangelo. STATUE OF HERCULES AND CACUS Arriving from the Uffizi, it is the first of the large statues adorning the arengario [government buildings] in Piazza della Si50
gnoria, opposite Palazzo Vecchio. Depicting the hero’s victory over the monstrous being, it was made to celebrate the return to power of the Medici. JUDITH AND HOLOFERNES The original work dates back to 1457. Authored by Donatello, it is preserved in the Gigli Hall in Palazzo Vecchio. The bronze copy of Judith and Holofernes has a place of honour on the arengario of the Palazzo Vecchio for its symbolic value. Indeed, it represents the victory of virtue over evil. STATUE OF MARZOCCO The Marzocco, the lion with his paw on a shield with the Florentine lily, is the symbol and protector of Florence. It is located between Judith and the Fountain of Neptune. A copy of Donatello’s sculpture of 1419 stands majestically in Piazza della Signoria, while the original is preserved at the Bargello. DAVID BY MICHELANGELO The original masterpiece is in the Accademia Gallery. A copy was placed in Piazza della Signoria in 1910, while we find an earlier copy in Piazzale Michelangelo. It dates back to 25 June 1873, and was pulled by nine pairs of oxen. Although they lack the pathos of Michelange-
lo’s masterpiece, the copies are fascinating. If you are already facing the Palazzo Vecchio, the walk to the Piazzale offers a delightful route amidst the city’s vegetation. LOGGIA DEI LANZI Situated on the southern side of Piazza della Signoria, this 14th-century gallery is one of the most interesting examples of Florentine Gothic architecture. Called Loggia dei Lanzi because the German mercenaries known as Landsknechte once found shelter here, since the 16th century it has practically been an outdoor museum of Renaissance sculpture, including statues such as Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1554), the Rape of the Sabine Women (1580), Hercules and the Centaur Nessus (1598) by Giambologna, the Rape of Polyxena by Pio Fedi and the Roman marble statue Patroclus and Menelaus from the 1st century AD. FONTANA DEL PORCELLINO Here, good luck counts more than prestige. A stop at the 17th-century Fontana del Porcellino in the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo to stroke the nose of the bronze boar seems to be a good luck tradition.

ITINERARY
A TRIP THROUGH GREVE, PANZANO AND CASTELLINA IN CHIANTI by tantalizing food and wine shops under the arched loggia. To mention just one, Antica Macelleria Falorni, which has been selling its excellent charcuterie since 1729. The Saturday morning market in the square is fascinating. If you want to eat outdoors in the countryside, among the vineyards, try Terreno, 5 minutes from Greve, where Sofia Bebban Ruhne had the idea of creating this restaurant on the family estate. They have several tables on the beautiful outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyards. Continuing on, here is Panzano, the realm of butcher-poet Dario Cecchini who finds the time to recite Dante’s Divine Comedy between steaks and Chianti “tuna” (an exquisite pork loin, cooked in water and dressed with olive oil). But Cecchini does not just mean a butcher’ shop – now there are three world-renowned ways to enjoy Tuscan meat 56
in all its delicious forms. The Cecchini Panini Truck, a food truck open 7 days a week among its specialties, the MAC Dario, a hamburger in crusty bread served on a bed of salad, baked tomatoes and potatoes, Chianti sushi or Chianti tuna. To eat a proper steak instead, go to his Officina della Bistecca while the airy panoramic terrace and nearby Pieve di S. Leonino delight the eye. After this taste experience, get back on the road and from the crossroads for Radda in Chianti and the delightful village of Volpaia, curves and hairpin bends lined with cypress trees lead to Pietrafitta, up to lovely Castellina in Chianti, and Castello di Fonterutoli, the home of a renowned winery. Siena is now around the corner, ready to bewitch you with its wonders. We recommend setting your GPS: Bagno a Ripoli, Grassina, Greve in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Siena. Have a great trip.
