The curious history of the church of the lizards of Lorenteggio
TEXT Ugo Rossi
Like many others of Milan’s districts, Lorenteggio was originally an autonomous town which was annexed to the city of Milan at the beginning of the 20th century.
This district is the location of a small but fascinating church characterised by four unique qualities that make it stand out. We are talking about the Oratory of San Protaso, also known as the gesa di lusert (Church of the Lizards), a name given to it by actor Piero Mazzarella while commenting on its previous state of abandonment. It is the oldest religious building in this district and one of the only two churches in Milan without bells. Also, it is found in quite an odd location: exactly in the middle of a median

along a very busy road – a peculiarity which emphasises its enigmatic nature. And more importantly, it is the smallest church in all of Milan.
Decorated with frescoes from various eras, this medieval gem has survived many atempts of destruction. The last one was the plan to build a M4 metro
stop in its place, but it was averted thanks to the determination of the Amici della Chieseta di San Protaso al Lorenteggio association. In particular, Paola Barsocchi, president of the association and author of a book on the church batled to obtain the veto on its demolition by the Superintendency, thus preserving this historic place. No longer a place of worship, today the Oratory of San Protaso belongs to private individuals and is managed by the Municipality. The church is accessible only on specific dates such as the first Sunday of May and the last Sunday of November. However, even if you are just passing by, do not miss out on the opportunity to take a look at this litle historic gem. You will not be disappointed.
MILAN’S COURTYARDS
A guided tour through the courtyards of Milan, from the historic downtown nucleus to the Navigli area
Milan reveals its beauty in the most unexpected places: concealed in a mural, behind an anonymous-looking door or in an astonishing courtyard. A few of delightful spots to check out? The courtyard of the Pinacoteca di Brera at Via Brera 28, a gem of art and history; the delightful courtyard of Hotel Portrait in the heart of the Fashion Quadrilateral; the elegant cloister of the former Archepiscopal Seminary at Corso Venezia 11; and last but not least the fascinating courtyard of the Piccolo Teatro Grassi at Via Rovello 2. Every one a secret haven of peace and culture in the heart of Milan.
Milan has always distinguished itself from the dashing appearance of Venetian palazzos, the magnificence of Genoa’s buildings, the austere look of Florentine homes, the opulence of Roman villas by lining its streets with seemingly modest facades that hide elegant courtyards, where wealthy families lived quite comfortably, never lacking for anything but without making a show of it. And so, hidden behind the facades of Milan’s elegant palazzos are the most unexpected views, lovely gardens, spectacular interiors and secret courtyards, which are ofen frescoed and adorned with majestic age-old plants, statues and wrought iron gates with decorations inspired by nature and the arts. It was typical of Milanese aristocratic families to have their mansions feature an austere, unadorned facade in contrast to rich and elegant interiors,
a characteristic which gave these buildings a mysterious charm, while avoiding to expose the lives of its inhabitants to prying eyes and excite the envy of the less fortunate and successful. That is the reason why the architectural and artistic richness of Milanese palazzos is nearly always facing the inside, in particular, the courtyard. All spaces in the house revolved around the courtyard, which ofen featured remains of a portico leading to the building’s main entrance. Typically 4 to 5 floors-high above ground, these buildings rarely housed shops or artisan workshops on the ground floor, and the main floor and upper floors were reserved for the private rooms.
The historic nucleus of downtown Milan, of ancient Roman origin, is still a densely populated area. Some of the city’s main cultural institutions are found there, including several aristocratic mansions, converted into city museums: the

neo-Renaissance collection of the Bagati Valsecchi brothers is housed in the palazzo by the same name, while a restaurant and fashion showroom occupy the courtyard. The Poldi Pezzoli Museum contains over five thousand pieces spanning from ancient times to the 1800s, including works by Boticelli, Mantegna and Hayez, but also weapons, suits of armor, jewelry and chinaware. Palazzo Morando, on Via Sant’Andrea, is divided into two distinct sections: an eighteenth-century collection of paintings and furniture and the Fashion Costume and Image Museum. Just a few steps away from here is the imposing cloister of the former Archbishop’s Seminary ( an amazing connection between Via Sant’Andrea and Corso Venezia), which was reopened to the public a few years ago and houses the understated luxury of the Portrait Milano Hotel, in addition to several boutiques, cafés and restaurants.
In the adjoining neoclassical courtyard designed in the late eighteenth century by architect Giuseppe Piermarini (who had already designed the Scala Theater), the historic Pasticceria Cova 1817 opened a lovely ‘dehors’, a sort of exclusive courtyard-in-thecourtyard, where customers can enjoy their morning cap-

puccinos in a “temple” erected to honor Italian culinary excellence and the art of pastry-making. The streets surrounding the glitering Via Monte Napoleone are lined with palazzos from which one can catch a glimpse, through the entrance gates, of the typical aristocratic Mil-
anese courtyards with their atmosphere of understated elegance, and let one’s imagination run wild.
Located in the nearby Corso Magenta area are the remains of an ancient Roman imperial palace, built by Diocletian in the 3rd century A.C. when Milan became the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The Archeological Museum is based here, housed in the former Monastery of San Maurizio. The cloister, at the entrance, contains the remains of an ancient Roman villa. Nearly opposite the museum, at 10 Corso Magenta, in a lovely Art-Nouveau building, there are some beautiful courtyards. Speaking of Art-Nouveau architecture, the Porta Venezia area houses some must-see masterworks: the courtyard of Casa Galimberti, one of the city’s most beautiful Art-Nouveau style buildings at number 3 on Via Malpighi; the garden of the so-called ‘Ivy House’ on Viale

Majno; the entrance to Palazzo Berri-Meregalli at 8 Via Cappuccini with its beautiful large window; the frescoes and mosaics by Piero Adamo Rimoldi, and wrought irons by Alessandro Mazzucotelli. What actually allowed for the more recent development of the city, widely acknowledged as a pivotal hub for global economy, is financial capital mobility, as well as an aggressive real estate market that led to the radical change of buildings’ designated use, from which many areas benefited. For instance, the city’s typical working class housing units, built upon urbanized rural sites, were designed to have a courtyard too. The houses, definitely smallsized and with shared toilets, featured an inner balcony running the whole length of the building on each floor, from which the name ‘casa di ringhiera’ originated. The ground floors opening onto the street always housed shops, while the courtyard

was the center of small manufacturing activity, usually closely related to the housing units. The facade was extremely plain, a simplified version of upper class homes. Today, there are many examples of ‘case di ringhiera’ in the Via Paolo Sarpi, Porta Genova and Isola neighborhoods and Navigli area, which have been converted by architects into design flats, artists’ studios, international art galleries, lovely modern residences and trendy venues. Something similar can be found along Via Lincoln, not far from Piazza Cinque Giornate, amidst brightly colored houses, which have become the city’s most instagrammed buildings. The Deus Café bistro is a sort of symbol in Milan and is housed in a large, converted industrial space, featuring a lovely courtyard with a pergola full of flowers: there’s no sign on the street door and a small entrance leads to this outdoor café-restaurant, fur-
nished with beautiful vintage pieces, which is open for lunch and dinner, drinks and snacks from breakfast to late into the night.
Many people describe Milan as the ‘city of closed doors and beautiful interior courtyards’ and that prety much hits the nail right on the head as a fiting figurative and literal metaphor for the city. We walk through the most picturesque courtyards of the Milanese Navigli, even prettier in the flowering season and with its colorful old-fashioned houses.
Occasionally, these large, wooden, arched doors–sometimes as high as two or three stories–are wide open offering a peak into their charming interiors to us passers-by who don’t have courtyards of our own at which we may ogle Each courtyard we glimpse tug ridiculously hard on our heartstrings, so we thought that today we’d share some shots of these quintessential Milanese vistas.

ively and sophisticated, an irresistible mix between an exclusive residential area and the liveliness of the international and trendy student area, thanks to two of the most prestigious universities in Milan: Bocconi with its state-of-theart campus and the Statale, located within the historic Ca’ Granda, commissioned by Duke Francesco Sforza.
It is no surprise that the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics will be held here, and that the Olympic Village is taking shape, the first part of the great urban redevelopment project of the disused railway yard that will connect Fondazione Prada to Porta Romana through a vast park.
The district takes its name from the old access road along the sixteenthcentury Spanish walls of the city which led to Rome, and is known as one of the ‘food districts’ in the city. You can eat day and night at the many
restaurants, wine bars, cocktails bars and cafes.
A young and lively neighbourhood full of colour with the many murals decorating streets and buildings created by famous artists such as the two wall paintings in Corso di Porta Romana (at number 111 and 113) realised by Cheone - Time to Fly and the building which looks like it is about to melt, reminiscent of Gaudi’s Spanish architecture - or Porta Romana Bella by artist Marco Goran Romano, who tried his hand at mural painting for the first time, which has almost become the symbol of the district. But Porta Romana is also a cultural hub, thanks to its theatres, cinemas, museums and bookstores. The Franco Parenti Theatre founded in 1972 and restored by architect Michele De Lucchi was the first building to bring life to the district. Next to it, there are the Bagni Misteriosi (from the famous series of works by Giorgio de Chirico).

They also form part of the theatre complex and consist of two pools, a small and shallow one, and a larger and deeper one with a wooden deck for sunbathing during the day which in the evening turns into a floating stage. A spectacular seting that this winter will be transformed into a nativity scene and will also be the venue for other events and seasonal activities. Uovodiseppia Milano presents itself as a homage to Sicilian warmth and tradition. “Our restaurant sets out to tell the world about Sicily today, by offering a place where our guests can feel at home, welcomed with all the care of a modern-day mamma”, explains
A
PROJECT THAT CELEBRATES CONTEMPORARY SICILY THROUGH A VERY SPECIAL CULINARY EXPERIENCE
Cutaia, who has designed a menu that reflects all the simplicity and depth of the island’s food. Every dish encapsulates a familiar flavour, evoking the aromas and tastes of its native land, in a constant dialogue between past and present. “Vitorio Borgia and I share a friendship and respect that goes back years. So this project is a natural continuation of our relationship, a way to offer an experience of Sicily that’s extraordinarily authentic.” Vitorio Borgia shares the
same vision. As the founder of the Borgia Group, which stands out for its work to promote Italian gastronomic excellence, Borgia is firmly convinced that this collaboration is just the start of their journey together. “I’m really happy to have Pino here with us. Our shared intentions and our passion for our roots make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience”, he says. “The venue itself already has a Sicilian soul, so it was a natural choice as our first meeting point.” With its warm, friendly atmosphere, every detail of Uovodiseppia is designed to put guests at their ease and invite them to enjoy a completely authentic experience. The mood is that of a welcoming and elegant home, whose every element – from decor to service – reflects traditional Sicilian hospitality, brimming with generosity and warmth.

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI
This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.
Corso Magenta, 12
ARTLINE
Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.
Piazza Elsa Morante
VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI
Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.

BAM
LA BIBLIOTECA
DEGLI ALBERI
A contemporary botanical garden located among the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova with paths that merge with each other forming geometrical patterns, circular forests and flower gardens. The Biblioteca degli Alberi is one of the most representative parks of the new Milan, greener and more sustainable, where you can spend time among nature and attend artistic and cultural events.
BOSCO VERTICALE
The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.
