Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Li le Prince is part of the Grandi spe acoli per piccoli project at Teatro alla Scala, which aims to get children into the theatre and accustomed to music. A childhood classic with music by Pierangelo Valtinoni, the show is directed by Polly Graham, sets and costumes are by Basia Bińkowska, and the Children’s Choir is conducted by Bruno Casoni.

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO

Teatro alla Scala

The Marriage of Figaro is the first of three opere buffe by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and has been a hit with audiences here since the 1981 version starring the great Riccardo Muti. Now it returns to Milan’s opera house directed by Giorgio Strehler and with Luca Michele i as Figaro. The female leads are Olga Beszmertna as the Countess and Benede a Torre as Susanna.

An all-round artist who has released over 50 albums and sold millions of discs all over the world, as well as receiving nine Grammy Awards. Gilberto Gil’s is a unique musical style with influences from pop, rock and jazz; Aquele Abraço comes to Milan as part of his European farewell tour, revisiting the most significant places in a legendary career.

We enter the Duomo from the western side and move towards the apse, which faces east. When we enter the cathedral we make a choice to walk back in time in spiritual terms to reach the rising star, Christ resurrected, represented by the Raza: a radiant sun at the centre of the rose window in the apse and a religious symbol for the faithful, which also had political significance as the emblem of the Visconti dynasty. Proceeding down the central nave between the 52 columns - one for every week of the year - we’re figuratively moving in the opposite direction from death; we’re moving towards life.” With these words, Monsignor Gianantonio Borgonovo, archpriest of the Duomo since 2012, introduces the cathedral. He talks of spirit and substance, architecture and the soul, art and tradition, but he also lets

us in on some fascinating details. “I’ll tell you a couple of things that not many people know.

Near the main entrance there’s a sundial on the floor. A beam of sunlight comes through a gnomonic hole in the ceiling and falls onto a long brass line, marking midday at any time of year. Although it’s very old - it was installed in 1768 - thanks to recent adjustments, the sundial is still accurate to this day. The second curious thing is the red doorway at the centre of the vault in the apse: this is where a precious relic is kept: a nail from the True Cross. Every year, on the Saturday before 14 September, the Rite of the Nivola takes place: the Archbishop of Milan ascends to the tabernacle in the Nivola, a unique wooden ‘li ’ in the shape of a cloud, painted with angels in 1612 by Landriani, to remove the relic, which is

displayed in the cathedral for veneration by the faithful for three days, until the following Monday a er Vespers. It was St Charles Borromeo who first carried the Holy Nail in procession during the plague in October 1576; a wooden crucifix was built for the purpose, which can be seen today in the parish church of Trezzo sull’Adda.”

Monsignor Borgonovo makes special mention of the stained glass windows which - even more than the Duomo’s terraces - have a specific spiritual significance: “In the past, stained glass windows were the Biblia Pauperum, in other

words the Bible of the poor, since until the early 20th century many people were unable to read and write. So the windows were a part of the catechism along with the sermons; later, with the advent of electric lighting and the spread of education, they became, paradoxically, a Biblia Agnosticorum: skilfully backlit from the inside, they acted as an advertisement of the Faith for ina entive passers-by, who might pause and admire the spectacular kaleidoscope of colours and figures… that’s the hope, anyway!”

And of course we have to talk about the Madonnina,

the symbol of the cathedral and the city itself: “On the night of 27 December 1774, as the Milanese slept, the golden statue of the Virgin Mary appeared on the very tip of the highest spire. Can you imagine what the weather was like? 27th December, in Milan, at that height…! The Madonnina up there, the first among all the faithful, reminds us believers that we’re gradually moving eastwards, towards God, the ultimate destination of our journey.

“But the Madonnina also has enormous sentimental and popular value for the inhabitants of Milan, and there is a custom dating

back to the 1930s, when the first skyscrapers began to be built in the city: no building can be higher than the statue.

To this day, although the skyline of Milan is studded with tall buildings, when any exceeds 108 metres, the tradition is to place a small replica of the Madonnina on the roof, reminding us that we may have risen, but She, the Mother of God, remains closest to heaven. It’s an oxymoron, to say the least… like saying infinite finitude”. To learn more about the history of the Duomo, you can visit the adjoining Museum: 26 exhibition rooms and

a chronological itinerary that follows every stage of the cathedral’s construction, from its foundation

in 1386 to the 20th century. In a recent innovation, the Duomo becomes 0.4, offering new digital opportunities: an extraordinary vir-

tual experience to explore the Candoglia quarry, source of the marble used to build the cathedral, using special headsets available at the museum; or a stunning immersive guided tour that takes us to the age of St Ambrose, reveals the workings of the sundial and ascends to the Holy Nail in the Nivola, while exploring the faces and facades of the cathedral through the centuries. Lastly, October brings two very special events: a playful tour for children on Sunday 8th and a visit to the cathedral’s Great Organ on Sunday 15th, to mark the Duomo’s birthday.

Just hop on street car n.3 from the Duomo and you will reach Largo Mahler, the square that is dominated by the Auditorium di Milano, the home of Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, the city’s orchestra. At the Auditorium, music is played every week. The Symphonic Season, the heart of the Orchestra’s artistic offerings, features weekly concerts on Thursday nights, Friday nights and Sunday a ernoons, performed by top internationally-renowed musicians, at a theater whose acoustics are considered to be among Italy’s best. Fondazione Furla and GAM - Galleria d’Arte Moderna together again, for the new edition of Furla Series - an exhibition project providing a unique opportunity for past masters and protagonists of the contemporary scene to come face to face - which this year brings to the spaces of the prestigious museum the works of Suzanne Jackson with Somethings in the World, the first exibition to be dedicated to the artist an European Institution, which can be visited until December 17.

In show, a selection of iconic works, previously unseen works and new productions that enter into dialogue with the museum context and its own collection.

search that retraces key moments of the artist’s career, from her dreamlike paintings of the 1970s to the radical experiments of the most recent, free-hanging ‘anti-canvases’.

Her initial figurative production evolved over the years, progressively approaching abstraction, until arriving at the elab-

oration of a very personal vocabulary in which painting takes on both a sculptural and environmental dimension.

A figurative production which is the nourished result of her experience in dance, theater and poetry, where abstract references to the nature and life are always evident with a creative sensitivity with which the artist expresses herself by delicate metaphorical shapes.

Suzanne Jackson was born on 1944 and she grew up in the Yukon which became a federal state of Alaska on 1950. She moved to California enjoying the local artist community to the point of opening her own studio: Gallery 32 one of the major reference point for the underground art scene.

Visiting the Ca’ del Bosco winery it is also a wonderful experience for the eyes. Berlucchi with its fascinating bricks and arches, dug ten metres below ground level, is a must for any wine lover. FRANCIACORTA IS AN AREA RENOWNED

FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SPARKLING

WINES OF THE SAME NAME

Renowned for its sparkling wines produced according to the traditional method, Franciacorta is the ideal destination for an eclectic holiday with walks in nature, art, wonderful outdoor excursions and wine experiences. It is a li le piece of paradise overlooking Lake Iseo, and only one hour from Milan.

VILLAGES, CASTLES AND ABBEYS

Following an itinerary or meandering through the hills, you will discover small villages, ancient villas and monasteries starting from the Strada del Franciacorta: 90 km of amazing landscapes to explore by bike, trekking or horseback among rows of vineyards, old villages and well-preserved castles such as those of Bornato, Passirano or Gussago. The Olivetana Abbey in Rodengo Saiano is definitely worth a stop. In this imposing monastery you can visit its three cloisters as well as its church, the monastery’s underground tunnel and a workshop for the restoration of ancient books managed by the

monks, who also produce honey and herbal liqueurs. Only a few kilometres by car, you can reach Provaglio d’Iseo where you will see the beautiful monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa perched on a rock spur overlooking the marshy area of Torbiere del Sebino. You can also spot red heron and the swamp hawk on the lake. A few more kilometres will take you down to the plateau and up to the mountain hut and the li le church of Madonna del Corno but you will be rewarded with the breathtaking views of the whole of Franciacorta and the Torbiere nature reserve you can admire from the square in front of the church. The mountain hut is usually open on Sundays and public holidays. CASTELLO SFORZESCO

It was originally a fortress built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the 15th century. One hundred years later, Francesco Sforza made it his noble residence a er taking possession of Milan. Ludovico Sforza founded one of the most sophisticated courts in Europe and called the best artists of the time to embellish the castle, including Leonardo da Vinci and Filarete. Located in the square that shares its name, the Duomo is dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente and is Italy’s largest church. Symbol and protector of the Milanese people, the Madonnina is made in beaten and gilded copper plates, today supported by a framework of stainless steel. The Madonnina has stood on the main spire of the cathedral since 1774. The building has 135 pinnacles and contains

Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, this shopping center’s foundation stone was laid in 1865 by Vi orio Emanuele II, hence its name. From its inception, the Galleria was a meeting place for the Milanese bourgeois, earning it the nickname Milan’s living room. It has a cross plan with an octagonal iron and glass roof, 47 metres high. The visitor’s gaze is drawn toward the floor mosaics, which represent the coats of arms of Rome, Flor-

NECCHI CAMPIGLIO HOUSE MUSEUM

Nestled in a large private garden with swimming pool and tennis court downtown Milan, Villa Necchi Campiglio was completed in 1935. It was designed by architect Piero Portaluppi for the Necchi Campiglio family, members of Milan’s wealthy and elegant upper middle class in the 1930s. THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. The bicycle is a green and convenient way of ge ing around in the city. Bike Sharing is available, either from fixed collection and drop-off stations, or with free-flow bikes. The BikeMi service operated by ATM and the Municipali-

METRO

With five lines, 111 stations and 94.5 kilometres of rails, Milan’s metro system is the largest in Italy. It operates every day from 6:00 to 00:30 (7:00 to 19:30 on 25 December and 1 May). The frequency of trains at major stations varies from 2 to 4 minutes, depending on the month and the timetable.

TRAIN

Milano Centrale station is the main hub connecting Milan to major Italian and European cities, and Cadorna station offers links to destinations in Lombardy. Other state-run railway stations are Garibaldi, Lambrate, Milano Rogoredo and Porta Genova. The

main overland stations correspond with the metro lines, making travel in the area easy and quick.
