mountains, the green of vineyards and lush gardens, the purple of gorgeous frescoes in palaces, churches and stately homes, and the brown of castles and villages where time stands still. And all marked by the rhythm of modernity,

which in Lombardy sheds unparalleled light on historical atractions, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Such as the rock drawings of Valcamonica, the Stradivarius violins of Cremona, and the key Renaissance cities of Mantua and Sabbioneta. If you come here during the Jubilee of 2025, we’ll advise you on the best itineraries. What’s more, Lombardy is the perfect place for green tourism and sport, and it’s no accident that our region will provide the stage for the 2026 Olympics. Lombardy offers unforgetable food and wine experiences too, from the wines of Franciacorta, the Oltrepò Pavese and Valtellina to our local food specialities. I could tell you much more, but you’ll discover it for yourself on your trip… following the trail of Lombardia Style.

THE STORY OF THE DEVIL IN PORTA ROMANA

We find out what lies behind the well-known legend

Astone’s throw from Milan Cathedral stands Palazzo Acerbi, which according to legend was home in the 17th century to Ludovico Acerbi, universally known at the time as the devil of Milan. To learn his story, we need to go back in time to 1630 when plague devastated the city. Given the circumstances, no one was in the mood for celebrating, but in a palace at Corso di Porta Romana 3 there were plenty of banquets and parties, organised by the man himself… Ludovico Acerbi He was a marquis from a wealthy family in Cisterna, and he bought the entire building and hosted his parties there. Physically he was said to be neither tall nor short, with a thick beard, neither fair nor dark, neither fat nor thin. They also say that of all the guests invited to the palace, none caught the plague. Maybe

they all sold their souls to the devil? And there’s one more curious fact about the building: if you look up, you’ll see a cannonball stuck in the wall. It was fired by the Austrian army against the rebellious Milanese during the famous Five Days insurrection in March 1848. And, what a coincidence, it has stayed there, in the very house where the devil once lived. Could it be fate?

Next to the BAM and the vertical forest, has been created Café Gorille, where you can enjoy from breakfast to a snack in a convivial environment with background music. A few steps away from Piazza Meda is Sant Ambroeus. Open every day from breakfast to dinner, it has undergone a renovation which has given it a more international feel, while still maintaining the iconic dishes of Italian cuisine. Finally, Camparino in Galleria, a cult place for drinking lovers where you can enjoy perfectly executed cocktails, overlooking the Duomo and its square, or for dinner before going to the opera. A perfect mix of classic and modern.

Always at the forefront of fashion and design, today’s Milan is also a major tourist destination, thanks to its extraordinary monuments and fascinating urban structure. Of all its many merits, a special place goes to the city’s squares, custodians of beauty and history just waiting to be known and admired. Taking a tour of Milan’s squares means discovering famous or less-known places that deserve to be seen and talked about, at least once in a lifetime. We discover the most beautiful and unusual.

PIAZZA DEL DUOMO, PIAZZA DEI MERCANTI, PIAZZA AFFARI

In the very heart of the city, the most famous square of all is Piazza del Duomo, home to the magnificent cathedral and the stunning Galleria Vitorio Emanuele II. But barely a stone’s throw away there’s another slice of Milanese history in the porticoes of Piazza dei Mercanti. This small and graceful square was built in the 13th century and is one of the oldest places in Milan,

originally a hub for meeting and trade. The medieval atmosphere persists in the distinctive colours and architectural style, which catch the eye of visitors as if time has stood still. Meanwhile, Piazza Affari, also near the cathedral, is a symbol of the Italian economy and financial dealings, today known for the Milan Stock Exchange and Maurizio Catelan’s famous L.O.V.E. sculpture. PIAZZA SAN SEPOLCRO

Not far from the cathedral, Piazza San Sepolcro is a secret treasure chest of art and history: it’s home to the church of San Sepolcro, whose thousand-year story overlaps with the Crusades. Built in the year 1000, the church has been part of the Ambrosiana complex since 1928. The most exquisite spot is the Crypt, with its floor of large marble slabs taken from the 4th century Roman forum. Unfortunately it’s only accessible on guided tours. The church is open Monday to Friday.

PIAZZA FILIPPO MEDA

A short walk from San Babila and the Galleria Vitorio Emanuele and close to the Fashion Quadrilateral, this square contains an extraordinary sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro in the form of a disc-shaped sun. It’s called Sole, or Grande Disco, and it plays on the contrast between the bronze of the statue and the green of the lawn where it stands. Created in 1980, the sculpture is surrounded by grand buildings with porticoes and elegant arches. The square is also home to Casa Hoepli, the headquarters of the celebrated bookstore and publisher, in a gorgeous 50s-style building.

PIAZZA

DUSE

The area known as the Quadrilateral of Silence is an oasis of peace and quiet in the heart of Milan, a Liberty-style residential neighbourhood to the east of Corso Venezia. We’re definitely off the beaten tourist trail here, as we stroll among elegant streets punctuated with secret gardens and facades by illustrious

architects, enjoying the unusual silence. Passing under Piero Portaluppi’s great arch, we come to the delightful Piazza Eleonora Duse, blooming with roses and lawns, and flanked by noble Liberty-style apartment blocks; take Via Cossa to reach the heart of this district.

PIAZZA GAE AULENTI IS THE EXPRESSION OF CONTEPORARY AND MILANESE SPIRIT

PIAZZA GAE AULENTI

Not far from Porta Garibaldi we come to Piazza Gae Aulenti, symbol of contemporary Milan and ultimate expression of the forward-looking Milanese spirit. Inaugurated in 2012, the square is circular in shape and avant-garde in style. Forming a backdrop are some of the best-known skyscrapers on Milan’s skyline: the Garib-

aldi Towers, the Bosco Verticale and the Unicredit Tower.

PIAZZA SAN LORENZO

Living testimony to Milan’s imperial past, Piazza San Lorenzo just outside Porta Ticinese is a picturesque place to pause and marvel at the 16 magnificent marble columns that provide a scenic frame for the basilica of the same name. Over the centuries the colonnade has become a gathering place in whose shade locals meet for an ad hoc aperitif or simply a chat in good company.

PIAZZA SANT’ALESSANDRO

From the church of Sant’Eustorgio on Corso di Porta Ticinese, there’s a route that allows visitors to trace the city’s thousand-plus-year story through some of the most emblematic religious buildings in Milan’s Christian and architectural history Slightly off the route in Piazza Sant’Alessandro stands the eponymous church, whose interior conceals a veritable array of important Lombard artists from the 17th and 18th centuries, including Camillo Procaccini and Daniele Crespi.

Among the sights to visit are the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Ligurian Gothic, the Church of San Martino and the Church of San Giorgio which can be reached by taking a walk up to headland where it stands, beyond which are also Castello Brown and the Punta di Capo lighthouse, from where you can enjoy unforgetable sunsets over the Gulf. In the old village of Portofino there is the Church dedicated to Santo Martin of Tours, dating back to the 12th century, in Lombard Romanesque style, as is the Church of San Giorgio.

several times, in 1867 it was bought by the British Consul, Sir Montague Yeats Brown, who carried out works to enlarge it, which he entrusted to the architect Alfredo d’Andrade.

Among the most significant changes, in addition to the towers, was the transformation of the ancient parade ground into a hanging garden with native maritime pines.

CHRIST OF THE ABYSS

Among the wonders of a trip to Portofino there is one entirely dedicated to diving enthusiasts, who can enjoy a close up view of the famous Christ of the Abyss on the seabed of the Marine Protected Area.

In 1954 the bronze statue was placed on the seabed in San Frutuoso Bay, between Camogli and Portofino, within the Marine Protected Natural Area. It is located at a depth of 17 meters and was created by sculptor Guido Galleti. Every year special dives are organized to visit it,

which always atract divers from all over the world.

NATURE

A trip to Portofino is also a journey into nature, between the deep blue of the sea and the green of a luxuriant Mediterranean park. The entire Portofino Marine Protected Area can be explored on a

series of signposted trails with frequent information panels. The Regional Natural Park of Portofino lies to the east of Genoa and comprises the promontory that overlooks the Gulf of Tigullio.

BEACHES

Paraggi beach, together with

the small Niasca beach, is hidden among the rocks of Paraggi bay: behind is the Monte Portofino Park, and in front, the waters of the Marine Protected Area. The bay is shared between the municipalities of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino and is situated in a strategic position that allows you to explore the nature of both the park on land and the marine reserve. You can reach Punta Cajeca from Paraggi beach by SUP or kayak in a few minutes. This spot separates Paraggi bay from Portofino bay.

Furthermore, from this particular point you have an almost complete view of the eastern coast of Liguria, stretching from Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Chiavari, Sestri Levante as far as the Cinque Terre Park and the Portovenere headland.

On clear days it is not difficult to spot the outlines of Palmaria and Tino islands in the distance.

Xsupercars was launched in the heart of Italy as the shared dream and vision of two extraordinary men, Giuliano D’Alterio and Giorgio Avola. An entrepreneurial adventure inspired by a deep passion for classic and sports cars and by the immense beauty only Italy can offer. al experience and passion for supercars. Together they have created something unique, precisely an experience designed to enhance the beauty of supercars and the Italian landscapes. The intent was clear, they wanted to create exciting itineraries by combining the adrenaline of sports driving with the discovery of cultural and food and wine routes

INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS

If your’s looking to snap some amazing pics in Milan, be sure to check out these colourful spots!

PALAZZO INA

There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram. Corso Sempione, 33

VIA LINCOLN

Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.

FONDAZIONE PRADA

The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee. THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

ARTLINE

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.

Piazza Elsa Morante

VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI

Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.

BOSCO VERTICALE

The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.
