Until December Maggio Musicale Fiorentino The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino season gets underway on 13 September with the Bentornati al Maggio concert, conducted by Zubin Mehta and dedicated to the music of Mozart. On the programme from 14 to 29 November is La bohème, an introduction to next year’s Puccini centenary. The children’s opera La meravigliosa storia del flauto magico, based on Mozart’s masterpiece, is on stage from 14 to 16 December.

Liu Bolin is known to the greater public for his mimetic performances. Referred to as “the invisible man,” he has made camouflage his hallmark. Remaining motionless like a living sculpture, Bolin blends, through meticulous body-painting, his physical form with the context behind him and then photographs the illusion.

Since I was young, the hotel world has always fascinated me. The idea of meeting people from all over the world with different cultures made me decide that hotels would be the only places where I would work. After finishing my studies at the Istituto Professionale Alberghiero I was lucky enough to join the concierge staff at Excelsior where I had the opportunity to work with important hotel concierges, real and own institutions in our job. After spending a few years in Switzerland, where I

perfected the art of hospitality, I returned to Italy and in 1997 I became part of the fantastic «family» of the Golden Keys and from that moment I had the opportunity to wear proudly crossed keys sign of excellence, dedication and quality of service. The church in Piazz a S. Martino was rebuilt in 1479 by th e Compagnia dei Buonomini di Sa n Martino, a confraternity estab lished in 1441 with the aim of helping the ‘shameful poor ’. The frescoes inside are attributed to Domenico Ghirlanda io’s workshop.

The museum is located in the apse area of the parish church of San Pietro a Cascia. There are works by very important painters of the Florentine area. The Triptych of San Giovenale, dated April 23, 1422, is Masaccio’s first known work.

TAGLIOLINI ALLA BUTTERA Discover the secrets to preparing this delicious Tuscan pasta dish by Osteria Belguardo TEXT Martina Olivieri

repare the base of the wild boar sauce with the chopped onion, celery, carrot and garlic. Fry these together in a pan with extra virgin olive oil over moderate heat. In the meantime, clean and dice the wild boar meat, which is then added to the base of vegetables once they are seared golden brown. Brown the meat well; when the liquid has all gone, splash with red wine and let it evaporate completely, stirring occasionally. Once the wine has completely evaporated add the tomato

pulp, vegetable broth, sage and rosemary bunches and cook for a few hours. Season with salt and pepper and add the taggiasca olives at the end, which should cook for a few minutes more. In the meantime to prepare the fresh pasta. Make a well with the semolina flour, crack the eggs into the center and start kneading. If the dough is too stiff, add water a little at a time. The dough should be left to rest 30 minutes in the refrigerator, and then rolled out to make Tagliolini. INGREDIENTS FOR WILD BOAR MEAT SAUCE: 1 kg wild boar meat (cinghiale), 2 red onions celery

stalks, 2 carrots, 3 cloves garlic, 1 kg tomato pulp, 200 ml red wine Taggiasca (Cailletier) olives - to taste, salt and pepper - to taste, extra-virgin olive oil - as needed, 1 sprig of sage and 1 of rosemary. THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE FLORENTINE PALACES CLEARLY REFLECTS THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY

hen the Florentines, in Midthe dle Ages, called it Palazzo dei Priori they had no idea -caught as they were in their Republican dream- that one day it would have been named ‘della Signoria’ and then ‘Vecchio’. In fact, the powerful Uberti family, the owners of the two towers upon which the Palazzo was built, were brought to trial non only because Ghibellines, but also because deemed as heretics. In ancient Roman times, there was a theatre here. The building was designed

in the late 1200s (supposedly by Arnolfo di Cambio) to keep the magistrates safe in years of political turbulence. Then came the Medicis, followed by the House of Lorraine and the Savoia family. Today, Palazzo Vecchio is home to the Mayor of Florence and to the Museum of Palazzo Vecchio. A jump ahead in time and we reach Florence’s first Renaissance palace, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, which well reflects the accumulated wealth of the merchant class after the tower-house and so-called palagetto. Tradition has it that Co-

simo the Elder, in 1444, rejected Filippo Brunelleschi’s sumptuous design in favor of Michelozzo’s simpler plan, which was more in keeping with the Medici family’s seemingly low-profile, while they were actually seizing power over the city. The building currently houses the offices of the Province of Florence and a fascinating museum, which includes the wonderful Magi Chapel frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli. Shamelessly rich and unscrupulous, the Strozzi family of bankers drew inspiration from their rival’s 37

were supposed to continue non-stop until completed: the penalty was the confiscation of the property. Another Filippo Strozzi, Europe’s wealthiest banker at the time and he too an anti-Medici man, would see the Palazzo Strozzi’s completion in 1538, but he was imprisoned by Cosimo I in the Fortezza da Basso where, according to legend, he preferred killing himself to being put to death by the executioner. Also Luca Pitti dearly paid for his rivalry with the Medicis, when he attempted a coup to overthrow Piero (Cosimo’s son and Lorenzo 43

the Magnificent’s father). Luca was financially ruined and deprived of the Palace that he was building in the Oltrarno area and was designed to outdo the Medicis’ residence in scale and splendor: it is said that Luca Pitti demanded that the windows be larger than the Medicis’ main entrance and the courtyard big enough to contain Palazzo Strozzi. Palazzo Pitti ( which maintained its original name despite the political vicissitudes) was bought by Eleanor of Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I, in 1549, and became the chief residence of the Grand Dukes of Tus44

n a sunny morning in late August, following a lengthy and meticulous restoration, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I returned to its home in Piazza della Signoria. The son of the condottiere Giovanni dalle Bande Nere and Maria Salviati, granddaughter of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Cosimo I was a descendant of the secondary branch of the Medici family. He spent most of his childhood and adolescence at Villa del Trebbio in Mugello and Villa di Castello, both owned by his father, devoting himself to outdoor activities such as hunting, falconry, combat and horsemanship. A strong and proud young man, he was undaunted by his sudden ascent to power at the age of just 17, after the assassination of Alessandro de’ Medici. On the 50

contrary: Cosimo had inherited the fighting spirit of his father and his paternal grandmother Caterina Sforza and,

Cosimo was also an able politician and patron of the arts, backing numerous building projects that changed the face of Florence and gave his government an image of wise, enlightened power that brought economic and cultural prestige to the city. Among the outstanding architectural works he instigated are the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens. Giambologna’s commemorative statue of Cosimo I has been completely restored, removing surface deposits and the effects of corrosion to reveal the patina of the bronze, then coating it with several layers of protective substances. A spectacular intervention that drew on the very best restoration techniques.

his autumn Palazzo Strozzi celebrates Anish Kapoor, the colossus of contemporary art who has revolutionised the idea of sculpture. Curated by Arturo Galansino, Director General of Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the exhibition creates an original and engaging dialogue with the building’s architecture and audience. Palazzo Strozzi becomes a place both concave and convex, simultaneously whole and fragmented, in which visitors are invited to doubt their own senses. Difficult to define, it would be reductive to place Kapoor in aesthetic or conceptual canons: whether we like his work or not, he shakes up the soul, causes anxiety and disquiet, invites introspection…Born in Mumbai in 1954, Anish Kapoor has lived in London since the mid-70s, studying at Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea College of Art. He currently lives and works in London and Venice. His works are displayed in important permanent collections and major museums all over the world, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Tate in London, the 66

Fondazione Prada in Milan and the Guggenheim Museums in Venice, Bilbao and Abu Dhabi. His connection with Tuscany dates back to 2003 and his exhibition Ascension at Galleria Continua, a largescale installation that subsequently toured the world, including the Venice Biennale. The following year saw Aima, a permanent installation at Castello di Ama. “In Castello di Ama’s chapel a luminous circle opens in the centre of the floor, a small-lighted pit. Fire and light. A precious substance, indefinable certainly, and as misleading…” Kapoor’s own description is almost a poem. In 2005, inside the Torrione di Sant’Agostino in the

ancient city wall of San Gimignano, the artist conceived his installation for the 10th edition of Arte All’Arte: cement, stone and a magical location are the ingredients Kapoor uses to create Underground, a huge organic form that fills, but does not overfill, the space. With this work, Kapoor seeks to convey the idea of an enormous chrysalis in which we see, from one moment to the next, the explosion of new life, a birth. 2015 and 2018 saw two more exhibitions at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano: the first a solo show entitled Descension; the second with Daniel Buren, Daniel Buren & Anish Kapoor.

ne has the perception of how and strong rooted wine culture is in Florence not by casting a glance at the unique and rare landscape of the city’s hilly surroundings - which is the obvious fruit of millenary winegrowing practices that have contributed greatly to its design-, but by going below ground, where age-old wine cellars preserve intact the charm of the Etruscans’ invisible cities or where modern hypogeum cathedrals with a high aesthetic and technological content have

Here are the seven most beautiful wineries, both age-old and avant-garde, worth exploring just a one-hour drive from the Ponte Vecchio. CANTINA ANTINORI Hidden in the Val di Pesa hills, the monumental Antinori Winery has more than one surprise within its walls. The building’s ultramodern architecture, which underground, develops combines a strong aesthetic impact and a special attention to the land-

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296 and it is the world’s third largest church after St. Peter’s in Rome and St. Paul’s in London.
