A Backward Glance: Giorgio Morandi and the Old Masters

Giorgio Morandi, Still Life (Natura morta), 1956 Oil on canvas, 35.8 x 35.4 cm. Istituzione Bologna Musei | Museo Morandi. © Giorgio Morandi, vegap, Bilbao, 2019

12–october 6, 2019 curators: petra joos, with the collaboration of giovanni casini, and in consultation with vivien greene galleries 305, 306, and 307 april

From his years as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, Giorgio Morandi centered his practice on engraving and painting landscapes and still-lifes, which account for much of his output. Initially influenced by the Italian masters (Giotto, Uccello, Masaccio) and later by Cézanne, Cubism, and Futurism, his work gradually acquired a metaphysical orientation. In 1920, he began to investigate the world of objects (bottles, vases, boxes) and landscapes, reduced to their most elementary sobriety. His quintessential figurative painting is unlike any other 20th-century pictorial oeuvre, possessing a unique intensity, beauty, and timelessness. Morandi’s still-lifes, inspired by the most mundane objects and highly personal in terms of composition, color, and light, take his zeal for purity, concentration, and the essential to an extreme level. As the artist himself once said, “One can travel this world and see nothing. To achieve understanding it

is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see.” This exhibition will cast new light onto Giorgio Morandi’s work, approaching it from a new perspective, analyzing the influence on his work of the Old Masters of the Spanish (El Greco), Bolognese (Jacopo Bassano, Giuseppe Crespi), and French (Jean Siméon Chardin), Schools from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.

Lucio Fontana (b. 1899; d. 1968) was one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. A witness to the political, cultural, and technological transformations that defined his era, Fontana became an essential reference in post-war European art, due to the systematic cutting of the painted canvas with the help of a stiletto, starting in 1958. This extraordinarily radical gesture emblematizes the anxiety haunting a historical period that was marked by the Cold War and the space race. Although Fontana put painting at the center of his investigations, his practice covers a much vaster and complex territory that he addressed with the concept of Spatialism. Evoking the synthesis of all art forms, this term encompassed multiple systems of representation and materiality, including sculpture as well as stage design. Looking at the fascinating complexity of the

artist’s oeuvre, Lucio Fontana. On the Threshold comprehends a large selection of paintings, sculptures in bronze and ceramic, drawings, and environments, created by Fontana between 1929 and 1968. This ambitious survey will offer Museum visitors a unique opportunity to assess the historical legacy of this fundamental figure. Exhibition organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), in collaboration with the Fondazione Lucio Fontana (Milan) and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was born shortly before the outbreak of World War II, in Dresden, which would become a part of East Germany following the end of the conflict. His interest in the Informalism and Expressionism developing on the other side of the Wall quickly led him to abandon his hometown. After establishing himself in Düsseldorf, he made what he defined as “his first paintings based on photographs,” through which he sought a “new beginning,” and although he had already previously created pieces in this style, Richter considered that the photo paintings from before 1962 belonged to the past. Within this category, the Seascapes was a series that Richter worked on from the end of the 1960s up until 1998, the date of Seascape (Seestück), a piece that belongs to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection. This exhibition is the first to present a significant set of seascapes,

in which the author relies both on traditional sources, such as the melancholy and atmospheric landscapes of German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, as well as the popular snapshots usually taken while on vacation, presenting a reflection on nature and visual perception. Through these paintings and drawings, Richter forces us to face the problem of representation, merging the painted surface and the photographic record into one. To do so, he applied highly diluted paint, achieving the smooth surface of a photograph, and like in many instant photos, he slightly blurred the image to make it more difficult to distinguish whether it is a photograph or a painting. In some of these works, the sea and the sky from different sources merge, becoming almost interchangeable, leaving it up to our perception to identify which is which.
