Henri Michaux: The Other Side

Henri Michaux Untitled, 1981 Acrylic, India ink, and pencil on paper 500 x 650 mm Private collection © Archives Henri Michaux, VEGAP, Bilbao, 2018

february 2– may 13, 2018 galleries 305, 306, and 307 curated by manuel cirauqui This exhibition is designed as a select survey spanning six decades of visual work by Henri Michaux (b. 1899, Namur, Belgium; d. 1984, Paris), an unclassifiable figure in 20thcentury art and literature and an object of worship for prominent artists like Francis Bacon and Asger Jorn. Starting with Michaux’s earliest experiments with drawing and gouache in the 1920s and 1930s, this show explores his many stages of experimentation until his last works on canvas from the early 1980s. Organized in close collaboration with the Michaux Archives in Paris, this exhibition presents more than 200 works, including numerous never-before-seen works on paper and archival material, along with holdings from important public and private collections. Henri Michaux: The Other Side is the first major exhibition of this author’s works at a Guggenheim institution since the retrospective held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1978.
