Henri Michaux: The Other Side

Henri Michaux Untitled, 1981 Acrylic, India ink, and pencil on paper 500 x 650 mm Private collection © Archives Henri Michaux, VEGAP, Bilbao, 2018

february 2– may 13, 2018 galleries 305, 306, and 307 curated by manuel cirauqui This exhibition is designed as a select survey spanning six decades of visual work by Henri Michaux (b. 1899, Namur, Belgium; d. 1984, Paris), an unclassifiable figure in 20thcentury art and literature and an object of worship for prominent artists like Francis Bacon and Asger Jorn. Starting with Michaux’s earliest experiments with drawing and gouache in the 1920s and 1930s, this show explores his many stages of experimentation until his last works on canvas from the early 1980s. Organized in close collaboration with the Michaux Archives in Paris, this exhibition presents more than 200 works, including numerous never-before-seen works on paper and archival material, along with holdings from important public and private collections. Henri Michaux: The Other Side is the first major exhibition of this author’s works at a Guggenheim institution since the retrospective held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1978.

Esther Ferrer: Intertwined Spaces march 16– june 10, 2018 gallery 105 curated by petra joos Esther Ferrer (b. 1937, Donostia/San Sebastián), a pioneer and one of the leading representatives of performance art in Spain, began to participate in the activities of the ZAJ group with Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce, and Juan Hidalgo in 1967, and since then she has worked in action art as her main medium, even though in the 1970s she went back to creating staged photographs, installations, drawings, paintings based on the series of prime numbers or ∏, and objects. Her oeuvre began during the 1960s and falls within the Minimalist and Conceptual Art movement. Other influences were Stéphane Mallarmé, Georges Perec, John Cage, and Fluxus as its leading figures—as well as of the feminist movements of the time. Throughout her extensive career, Ferrer has participated in numerous action art festivals and has presented works at numerous museums. She has also won multiple awards: in 1999, she was one of the Spanish representatives at the Venice Biennale; in 2008, she was awarded with the National Fine

Arts Prize; in 2012, she received the Gure Artea Prize from the Basque Government; and in 2014, she was awarded the MAV (Women in Visual Arts) Prize, the Marie Claire Award in Contemporary Art, and the Velázquez Fine Arts Prize. This thematic exhibition is dedicated almost exclusively to installations that have never been seen before.
