Paris, Fin de Siècle
Signac, Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Their Contemporaries may 12–september 17, 2017 galleries 305–306–307 • curator: vivien greene With around 100 works, including paintings, drawings, prints, and works on paper, Paris, Fin de Siècle: Signac, Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Their Contemporaries analyzes the Parisian art scene, focusing on the most important French avant-gardes at the end of the 19th century, especially the Neo-Impressionists, Nabis, and Symbolists, and their most prominent protagonists. Fin de siècle Paris was a period of major political upheaval and deep-seated cultural transformations, and era that witnessed the coalescence of a series of new art movements that reflected the multiple facets of a tumultuous period. The subject matter of these artists was still the same as their Impressionist predecessors, but now they treated them in different ways: landscapes, views of modern urban cities, and recreational activities were presented along introspective scenes and fantastical visions. The exhibition particularly spotlights some of the most prominent artists of the period, including Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Félix Vallotton, Odilon Redon, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
