Paris, Fin de Siècle
Signac, Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Their Contemporaries may 12–september 17, 2017 galleries 305–306–307 • curator: vivien greene With around 100 works, including paintings, drawings, prints, and works on paper, Paris, Fin de Siècle: Signac, Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Their Contemporaries analyzes the Parisian art scene, focusing on the most important French avant-gardes at the end of the 19th century, especially the Neo-Impressionists, Nabis, and Symbolists, and their most prominent protagonists. Fin de siècle Paris was a period of major political upheaval and deep-seated cultural transformations, and era that witnessed the coalescence of a series of new art movements that reflected the multiple facets of a tumultuous period. The subject matter of these artists was still the same as their Impressionist predecessors, but now they treated them in different ways: landscapes, views of modern urban cities, and recreational activities were presented along introspective scenes and fantastical visions. The exhibition particularly spotlights some of the most prominent artists of the period, including Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Félix Vallotton, Odilon Redon, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
A CONVERSATION ON FIN DE SIÈCLE ART IN PARIS Vivien Greene, curator of the exhibition, and Cornelia Homburg, curator of the Washington University Gallery of Art and an expert in 19th century French art, will talk about art and the artists included in the show. date and venue : May 10, 7 pm, Auditorium

Bill Viola: A Retrospective june 30–november 9, 2017 second floor curator: lucía agirre A pioneer in the use of video and in the exploration of the moving image, Bill Viola is one of the most outstanding contemporary artists. Viola investigates both figuratively and literally the cycles of life, death, and rebirth using primordial elements like fire and water. His works frequently include studied changes of scale and time that seek to arouse profound and often unexpected responses within the viewer. Always linked to art history, Violas’s pieces address weighty subjects and concepts, such as perception and spirituality. Bill Viola: A Retrospective traces the artist’s career both thematically and chronologically, starting with his earliest pieces made in the 1970s—such as The Reflecting Pool (1977– 79)—until his most recent installations monumental in scale, including Going Forth by Day (2002), Fire Woman (2005), Tristan’s Ascension (2005), The Dreamers (2013), and Inverted Birth (2014). The exhibition reveals the transformation that has taken place in Viola’s language, as well as the increasing technological sophistication that his works have adopted. Appealing intensely to the senses, Viola’s oeuvre offers a spiritual reflection on transcendence and the fleeting nature of human life. Bill Viola, Fire Woman, 2005. The 20th Learning Through Art exhibition presents the works created by 113 schoolchildren between 6 and 12 throughout the academic year with the assistance of six artists and nine teachers. This educational program reinforces curricular subjects in primary school through artistic activities. During academic year 2016–2017, schoolchildren used art as a tool to explore topics like the different kinds of families that exist, what makes us different from each other, and in what ways we are the same using photography, painting, sculpture, video, and performance in order to discover and try to understand reality.
