The conceptual point of departure of this exhibition is the collaboration between Basque artist Eduardo Chillida and the philosopher Martin Heidegger in 1969 that led to the publication of an artist’s book titled Art and Space, whose title has been adopted for this exhibition. By updating and developing the concepts present in the dialogue between Heidegger and Chillida, the show offers more than 100 works by international artists and aims to be a reinterpretation of the history of abstraction in the past six decades. The inquiry into the properties of space has been one of the cornerstones of 20th-century art and remains so even now well into the 21st century. Some of the key moments in the recent history of Basque sculpture can be identified, especially in the career of artists like Chillida himself and Jorge Oteiza, who earned international recognition during a time when other European movements such as Spatialism and Zero were exploring alternatives to reserch into similar issues. PRIZE DRAW FOR 25 DOUBLE INVITATIONS TO THE EXHIBITION OPENING Log in at www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus/en (Join & Support/ Museum Members/ Private Area) to find out if you are one of the 25 Members, who will receive a double invitation to attend the opening of the exhibition.
