Andy Warhol: Shadows february 26–october gallery 105

2, 2016

In 1978, when he was 50 years old, Andy Warhol—assisted by his entourage at the Factory—embarked upon the production of Shadows, a monumental body of work that formalized some of the artist’s explorations of abstraction seen in earlier and later series. The radical implications of Shadows begin with their format: the series was conceived as one painting in 102 parts, where the final number is determined by the dimensions of the exhibition space. Unlike earlier works, in which thin layers of rolled acrylic paint constituted the backgrounds onto which black images were silkscreened, the backgrounds of the Shadows canvases were painted with a sponge mop, adding a sense of gesture to the picture plane. All 102 “shadows” are displayed at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, alternating between positive and negative imprints as they march along the gallery wall. Far from replicas, each Shadow corresponds to a form that reveals its space with precision, directing the spectator’s gaze to the light. By focusing on the shadow to devise light, Warhol returned to the quintessential problem of art: perception. Exhibition organized by the Dia Art Foundation

Louise Bourgeois Structures of Existence: The Cells march 18– september second floor

4, 2016

In a career spanning seven decades, Louise Bourgeois (b. 1911, Paris; d. 2010, New York) used a wide range of materials, forms, and sizes to create a unique body of work. This is the first major survey of her Cells (1986–2008), a series that encapsulates all of Bourgeois’s artistic preoccupations, which she began in the 1980s and continued to work on until shortly before her death. These evocative spaces are like rooms whose solitary interiors are off-limits to viewers and yet invite them to come closer, peer inside, catch a glimpse of their essence, and gain an intimate perspective on a private world. Like all of Bourgeois’s creations, the Cells are steeped in autobiographical references. The exhibition includes important works from previous decades that led up to this series and brings to light key facets of Bourgeois’s thoughts on space and memory, the body and architecture, the conscious and the unconscious. Exhibition organized by Haus der Kunst, Munich, in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao sponsored by:

DINING OPTIONS Visitors to the Museum can enjoy quality cuisine in three different spaces: Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao offers a unique culinary and cultural experience where Chef Josean Alija takes his cue from nature, working wonders with the bountiful products of local gardens, orchards, farms, and, of course, the sea. True to his principles, Alija defends the merits of this land and the local producers who help him achieve his goal: to constantly innovate and experiment without losing the flavor of his roots. Bistró Guggenheim Bilbao bases its cuisine on signature recipes and sauces that have been refined, perfected, and

adapted to suit the tastes of diners from far and wide, serving savory, healthy food in an informal setting. It’s the perfect place for celebrations, business meetings, or dinner with friends... And the unique location makes it ideal for a chic urban wedding reception! Bar Guggenheim Bilbao invites visitors to sample and savor surprising concoctions in a different way without sacrificing quality. The unconventional cuisine, featuring our famous pintxos, puts a premium on quality products and time-honored traditions that reflect the history of the Basque people: an invitation to celebrate life with a flavorful social ritual. Show your membership card to get 5% off at Bistró and Nerua and 10% off at the Bar. Discounts not compatible with other promotional offers
