Van Gogh to Picasso: The Thannhauser Legacy september

21, 2018–march 24, 2019

curator : megan fontanella galleries

305, 306 and 307

Drawn from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s Thannhauser Collection, Van Gogh to Picasso: The Thannhauser Legacy features works by Impressionist, PostImpressionist, and early modern masters, including Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent van Gogh. It marks the first occasion that a significant portion of this illustrious collection has been exhibited outside of New York since its arrival at the Guggenheim in this American city over fifty years ago. After a distinguished career in the art world, where he played a critical role in the development and dissemination of modern art in Europe and the United States, in 1963 dealer Justin K. Thannhauser announced a bequest of essential works from his private collection—spanning the past one hundred years of art history—to the Guggenheim. Hilde Thannhauser, Justin’s widow, subsequently expanded these holdings with additional gifts to the museum in 1984 and 1991. Today, the Thannhauser Collection provides an important survey of the period directly preceding that represented by the Guggenheim’s original core holdings, which are largely concentrated in abstract art. The Thannhauser works bring to the fore avant-gardists who sought to liberate art from academic genres and techniques, exploring instead the fleeting effects of nature and urban subject matters, and employing stylistic devices such as loose brushwork and unusual compositions. Innovative practices continued in the next decades as artists began to fracture and facet the picture plane, not to mention depict the spectacle of the changing city at the start of the 20th century. Van Gogh to Picasso: The Thannhauser Legacy documents the Thannhausers’ engagement with some of the most groundbreaking artists of their day and underscores the family’s broad-mindedness and staunch support for experimental art, which lives on at the Guggenheim. Alberto Giacometti. A Retrospective october

19, 2018– february 24, 2019

curators : catherine grenier and petra joos associate curator : mathilde lecuyer - maillé galleries of the second floor

“Seeing, understanding the world, feeling it intensely, and expanding our capacity for exploration to the maximum.” This is how Alberto Giacometti described the creative drive that guided him throughout his career. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao welcomes this retrospective devoted to one of the most influential sculptors and painters of the 20th century, Alberto Giacometti (b. 1901; d. 1966). The exhibition relies on the support and numerous loans from the Fondation Giacometti in Paris, which possesses exceptional and diverse holdings from all stages of the Swiss artist’s life, from his Cubist and Surrealist period to the works created between the 1940s and the end of his life. Featuring sculptures, paintings, and drawings, the show will be one of the most comprehensive surveys of the innovative work of Giacometti, who has been a model for many creative generations. The Bilbao exhibition also represents a rare opportunity to view his exceptional Women of Venice (Femmes de Venise), a group that has only been shown twice in its totality, at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and Tate, London, in 2017. Exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in collaboration with the Fondation Giacometti, Paris

Diana Thater: A Runaway World november

29, 2018– march 3, 2019

curator : manuel cirauqui film

Diana Thater, A Runaway World, 2016–17. Video installation. Dimensions variable. Installation view, The Mistake Room, Los Angeles

& video gallery 103

For the last thirty years, Diana Thater (b, 1962, San Francisco) has been a pioneer of multimedia art, combining innovative technologies of the moving image with forms that defy the narrative conventions of film and television. By manipulating color in the exhibition space and using projection screens or monitors as a medium, Thater’s works engage in dialogues with the most iconic names in video art while also addressing the greatest questions and concerns of contemporary culture. A recurring theme in her oeuvre is the extinction of animal species as a result of human activity.
