Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection november
27, 2015–april 3, 2016
third floor curated by: lucía agirre
Since its inception, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has worked to assemble a collection of significant works of art from the mid-20th century to the present day. Many of the 130 pieces that now comprise this collection stand out as icons of the contemporary era; when they were first unveiled, they made a strong impression, and over the years they have grown in stature, becoming veritable landmarks in the history of contemporary art. Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection offers visitors a chance to contemplate some of these highlights in an exhibition that , for example, juxtaposes Mark Rothko’s luminous Untitled (1952–53) with the unmistakable bright blue tone patented by Yves Klein that dominates his Large Blue Anthropometry (ANT 105)
(ca. 1960), and Andy Warhol’s repeated use of the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe in One Hundred and Fifty Marilyns (1979) with Robert Rauschenberg’s highly expressive Barge (1962–63) and Cy Twombly’s Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963). Sculpture is present in the form of notable pieces by Basque masters Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza, set in their international context, and other major European and American artists like Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter (Germany) and Clyfford Still and Jean-Michel Basquiat (US) are also represented in this showcase of the collection’s most important works.

Ho Tzu Nyen: The Cloud of Unknowing december 3, 2015– april 24, film & video gallery curated by : lucía agirre
2016
In his immersive multichannel video installation The Cloud of Unknowing (2011), artist Ho Tzu Nyen (b. Singapore, 1976) explores the representation of an elusive, amorphous subject: clouds. The work takes its title from an anonymous 14th-century mystical treatise, written in English in the Christian Neoplatonist tradition and intended to be used for contemplative prayer. It was also inspired by the book A Theory of /Cloud/: Toward a History of Painting, published in 1972 by French philosopher Hubert Damisch, in which the author uses symbology (the interpretation of symbols) and semiology (the study of signs) to examine the significance of cloud imagery in art history. The Cloud of Unknowing, originally created to represent Singapore at the 2011 Venice Biennale, unfolds in a deserted, low-income public housing block in Singapore. Each of the eight vignettes that comprise the piece revolves around a character who is unexpectedly met by an ethereal cloud that permeates their immediate surroundings, and the scenes allude to historically significant works of art by Western and Eastern masters. The Cloud of Unknowing plunges viewers into dreamlike realities thanks to the multiple sensations
triggered by the fusion of image and sound and by the artist’s use of cloud imagery as a metaphor for transcendence and spirituality.
