HEADS BEHIND HUUS Gstaad

Their love for the mountains, landscape, nature and, last but not least, the conviction of jointly bringing an extraordinary project to life brought them here. But their backgrounds couldn’t have been more different. Whilst Marwan Naja admits «I never thought I would be a hotelier», Günter Weilguni’s career had been mapped out for a long time: «I knew that I wanted to be a hotelier since I was a young boy». Both the investor and passionate host have similarly high values and goals and were quickly excited and convinced by this outstanding project. Günter Weilguni returned to his former workplace of many years with joy and energy. Born in Tyrol, Austria, he worked at the Steigenberger Hotel Gstaad-Saanen for almost 20 years. He was assistant manager for five years and, for no less than 14 years, he was responsible as the director for the
fortunes of the largest hotel in Saanenland. Günter Weilguni managed the Design Hotel Alpine Lodge Gstaad-Saanen with great success from 2009 onwards. At HUUS Gstaad AG, he has taken over the role of host and CEO. One would be hard-pressed to find anyone who knows the regional features and guests’ expectations in Saanenland better than him. His words reflect the fact that he is totally convinced about the new HUUS Hotel and its creative concept: «HUUS represents pure exhilaration. We also make sure our guests experience this...!» Marwan Naja, who was born and raised in Beirut, also sees his involvement at HUUS Gstaad AG as an appreciation of his adopted country, Switzerland.
ALL YOURS. The HUUSprinciple is simple: all the activity programmes on offer are simply included in the room price. In the winter the price of an overnight stay, for example, includes: lessons at the HUUSskischool and ski equipment rental for children up to 14 years of age. Or: unlimited trips on the cable cars for children up to 9 years of age. A free ride taster day with a mountain guide, daily guided winter hikes, ski guiding with insider tips, guided snowshoe hikes incl. equipment and fondue dinner in the igloo and, of course, also the ski shuttle bus from HUUS to the skiing area and back. In the summer mountain biking, climbing lessons, river rafting, abseiling, Indiana Jones, adventure park and other activities are part of the «all inclusive overnight package». So: ALL YOURS !

Huus Story INTERIEUR DESIGNER
ERIK NISSEN JOHANSEN Erik Nissen Johansen is the founder of Stylt, the multi-award-winning Swedish concept design studio behind the look of HUUS Hotel. The company works with clients from all over the world and specialises in designing hotels, restaurants and other experiences with plenty of personality, sense of place and a unique touch.
Under Erik’s leadership, Stylt has won several awards, including Best New Boutique Hotel in the World and two European Hotel Design Awards, several Swedish Design Prizes, and the World Hotel Award. So far the portfolio includes more than 400 restaurants and 250 hotels. «We believe that personality and character is much more important than the latest design trends,» says Erik Nissen Johansen. «Our concepts are based on a thorough study of the place, the people and the building, ensuring that each hotel fits into its own unique context.» Stylt employs architects, artists, graphic designers, copywriters, engineers and interior designers. The team delves deeply into each hotel’s social, historical and geographic context to find what is most unique about each place, and then creates a central idea on which the entire look of the hotel is based.
invite guests to go outside and find their adventure, whether on foot, on skis, by bike or raft. You can rent equipment and find a knowledgeable guide right in the hotel’s lobby. «We wanted the guests to feel like they were staying with a friend,» says Erik Nissen Johansen, «a friend with a gorgeous home who takes you on incredible outdoor experiences and then serves you a delicious meal in front of the fire.» The lounge, with its adjacent library, is the warm and relaxing heart of the hotel. Like the guest rooms, it is furnished in natural, traditional materials and rich, organic colours. In addition to deep, inviting sofas and a large fireplace, it features personal touches, like the musical instruments and hundreds of hand-picked books and magazines. The effect is something like a living room right on the mountainside - a perfect mix of comfort and adventure. Some Stylt highlights include Lydmar Hotel (Stockholm), Klaus K (Helsinki), Radisson Hotel Sonya (St Petersburg), Stora Hotellet (Umeå), 25h Hotel Le Tour (Düsseldorf, opening in 2017), St George (Helsinki, opening in 2019), The Well day spa (Oslo), Brasserie Le Rouge (Stockholm), Le Pain Français (Gothenburg), Creekside Villa Canmore (Canada) and Stenungsbaden Yacht Club (Gothenburg).
«At HUUS, we wanted to bring the stunning Saanenland nature and all the adventures it offers into the hotel,» continues Erik. «For example, for the reception counter, we went out and waded around in the river until we found the perfectly shaped boulder, giving you a taste of the outdoors right from the minute you arrive.»
Erik was born in Oslo Norway 1965 and graduated from the L‘Istituto per l‘Arte e il Restauro in Florence in 1985, with a diploma in art, art history, marketing and design. Erik’s parallel career as an artist has seen him exhibit his work, both solo and as part of a group, throughout Europe and the US.
Much effort has also gone into opening up the building, erasing the boundaries between inside and outside. The spectacular, ever-present mountains

Well, it’s not quite half bad. More than 400 hotels apply to become a member of Design Hotels every year. But only around five percent are accepted into the exclusive group founded by Claus Sendlinger in 1993. It goes without saying that every hotel is rigorously assessed, above all for its uniqueness, individual character and concept. The marketing, consulting and sales organisation’s portfolio currently comprises 300 hand-picked hotels in more than 55 countries and 185 destinations around the world. All the hotels are privately owned and managed. They all have strong roots in their regions and offer their guests authentic experiences. Günter Weilguni and Mirka Czybik more than just a little proud. Proud of «their» HUUS now being a member of the Design Hotel family. «With the outstanding and exclusive design, the personal service and the unique concept, we intend to not only meet the extremely high expectations of our guests but we would like to exceed them wherever possible», is the motto of the hosts.
Huus Story
THE HOST I am driving comfortably in my vehicle and enjoying the magnificent landscape. My gaze sweeps almost automatically from the road to my holiday hotel in Saanen-Gstaad. I am surprised to see lots of busy construction workers at HUUS Gstaad. My curiosity gets the better of me and I decide to take a look at what is being created with such great diligence. In next to no time, my car is on the huge parking area directly in front of the main entrance between numerous construction vehicles, lorries and containers. While I am still looking around, a charming young lady comes up to me and politely asks if she can help me. A conversation is quickly struck up and the young lady explains that she is the hotel manager of HUUS Gstaad that will be opening in a few days. Although the business of the construction site can be clearly felt all around, the young lady exudes a pleasant calmness that I can feel immediately. She offers to give me a tour of the construction site so that I can get an impression of the HUUS Hotel. But before we can start, she introduces herself as Mirka Czybik. Quite openly and straightforwardly, I ask her about her background and how she came to be the manager of the HUUS Hotel. In an open and forthcoming manner, the host of the HUUS Hotel tells me about her first experiences in the hotel industry as a young girl. Whenever she was on holiday with her parents, she had extensive contact with the employees and managers of the hotel thanks to her open and friendly manner in dealing with people as a child. Her career path was therefore actually already mapped out thanks to her talents, which had obviously already came to the fore at that stage.
Mirka Czybik and experiential background. She has been living in Gstaad for 12 years, seven years of which she has spent working in managerial roles at Steigenberger Hotel Gstaad-Saanen. Since 2009, she has been the assistant manager of Design Hotel Alpine Lodge Saanen and Hotel Landhaus Saanen. Mirka Czybik is now the manager of the newly opened HUUS Gstaad. This role can, of course, only be performed with the proper support of specialist staff in the individual departments, be it the receptionist, head chef, Chef de Service and many more. In addition to the specialist knowledge she has gained and continuously implemented in practice, Mirka Czybik also has a special talent: a motivating and appreciative handling of her team and guests. This became apparent on my tour of the HUUS Gstaad Hotel and I was continuously reminded of it as the craftsmen working there always had time to speak to Ms Czybik. Despite having a thousand and one unfinished things to do, Mirka Czybik always had enough time to handle every concern with the required respect. In a nutshell: I absolutely love the newly created and newly designed hotel. It became clear to me that Mirka Czybik offers her guests at the HUUS Hotel a home in an exceptional atmosphere of well-being and care. As we say goodbye to each other in front of the hotel, I know for certain where I will stay when I next come to Saanenland! Based on what I was fortunate enough to just experience, I recommend every guest in Saanenland to enjoy this special feel-good atmosphere. See you soon at the HUUS!
She passed the standard apprenticeship in the hotel industry with flying colours. For a young girl, the past to success in the hotel industry is paved with particular physical challenges. She overcame them all and, in addition, recognised that there is so much more to the hotel industry than «merely» serving and waiting on tables. She started her onthe-job training and graduated in Switzerland as a qualified hotel manager (dipl. Hotelmanagerin NDS HF) with various advanced training courses. She undertook further training in Cornell in the areas of employee management, human resources, project management, financial accounting, marketing and sales. In her own words as a passionate host, this gave her a highly diversified educational

Fresh ideas at consistently good quality. We have created ads that stand out for twenty years. Kieweg and Freiermuth is an owner-managed advertising agency. We develop ideas that are a good fit for our customers and we love customers that are a good fit for us. We are therefore all the more excited in having had the opportunity to assist in the development of HUUS Gstaad’s image and to design the hotel’s communication because we love good design, be it on paper, on the Web or within the interior design. A brand only becomes relevant and authentic if everything fits together, from the pillows right through to the hosts and the advertising. This is what we are working on together with Stylt and the HUUS Gstaad team. To a successful start for the first season!

ALL GOOD THINGS ARE WILD ‘N FREE - HUUSgarden -
«I want to build a big, square glass house and send it into space.» Nico Wissing
Nico Wissing has a big dream: «I want to build a big, square glass house and send it into space. Glass is the perfect material to bring landscapes closer. Today, no more than two percent of all houses in the world are focused on the garden. However, bringing landscapes to houses is of great significance. For this reason, it is absolutely essential for us to break away from the rigid formats. I hope that I will have the opportunity to be able to create such a spiritual place one day!» And indeed – a first glance confirms: a dream of a garden – completely redesigned, in accordance with the plans of the Dutch specialist – the HUUSgarden. Nico Wissing, founder and owner of ‘Greemm2’ and ‘NL Green Label’ has more than 30 years’ experience in landscape gardening and has won several awards
for designing sustainable garden projects. As he says so himself, a very naturally landscaped park was created. «Guests should feel the nature with every step» that is Wissing’s theme. A symbiosis of nature and functionality. Large green plants that flower from spring through to autumn greet you as you enter the garden. Only organic and sustainable products have been planted. Wissing: «We intentionally wanted to depart from a highly manicured lawn without weeds». Meadows and alpine grasslands with the atmosphere of a mountain pasture now invite you to explore and enjoy. Tall pine trees give shade where needed and the rainwater stream leads directly to a small pond. Wissing also proves his sense of sustainability in his choice of materials. Exotic woods, stones from China or similar do not feature here. «Everything
comes from the surrounding environment», assures the landscaper. The walkways are thus made of clay, the steps of oak sleepers and the modern but natural furnishings perfectly complement the nature garden. Benches and loungers invite one to stay and relax. Wissing also wants guests to discover the garden at night, make themselves comfortable in their lounger and watch the starry sky. The intentional low lighting does not generate any light pollution but still shows the right way in the dark. The natural stones that charge during the day and light up in the dark are a real eye-catcher. And, finally, what would a nature garden be without a natural playground! An upside down tree with many roots and trunks is waiting to be discovered by the kids. «Children’s creativity is put to the test on this playground» says Wissing from many years of experience, «it makes them happier!» And, one should add, parents surely too...

Giuseppe Colella
FRESH FROM THE KITCHEN No one knows flavoursome cuisine like Giuseppe Colella. Having won several awards and earned 16 Gault Millau points, while gaining experience in well-known establishments such as the Four Seasons in Milan, the Adlon in Berlin and the Grand Hotel Park Gstaad, the Italian-born chef from Ischia is now responsible for the HUUSguests’ culinary delights. Whether gourmet menu or hamburger, outdoor BBQ or cheese fondue in the cosy chalet in the stunning hotel garden: sustainable and seasonal products by local providers and regional partners, organic where possible, are at the heart of our culinary offering. This goes for organic raclette cheese or honey or apple juice from Gstaad. Organic or biodynamic fine wine is even served. Colella only uses regional fare in the two HUUSrestaurants. In the à la carte restaurant, the chef serves his sophisticated, legendary pasta creations, among other dishes. Guests can choose the ingredients themselves. Breakfast fans can enjoy breakfast at almost any hour in the HP Restaurant. An extensive «Seven Continents Breakfast» with more than 300 products is available here from morning through to late in the evening. For dinner, we offer international cuisine combined with a buffet. What’s more: our youngest guests will enjoy helping themselves from their own buffet at just the right height. Many children’s dishes are available here. And, once the kids have filled themselves up enough for an eventful day ahead, off they go to one of the two play areas. Meanwhile, the parents, grandparents and older siblings can stay to indulge in the epicurean delicacies in a relaxed environment.
BARADISE AND MORE
We’ll just call it a lounge. Actually it's something like the «HUUS village square» - i.e. a lounge but more comfortable. This is the centre of everything at HUUS - this is where it all happens. A meeting place, or a place for encounters. With the relaxed, informal and simple surroundings. Whether your ski outfit or little black number, your hiking boots or elegant jacket. Everything is allowed here and nothing is prohibited. Sit back and enjoy, watch the tongues of the fire curl their way up the chimney, listen to the crackle of the burning wood, slurp up the foam of your cappuccino or beer and delve into one of the 1000 books from the HUUSlibrary. And, on the top: enjoy the warm rays of sunshine and the natural Saanenland air undisturbed on the 50m-long terrace that spans the entire south side of the HUUS. A village square without a bar would be like an oasis without water: completely meaningless. So, if you’d rather sit on a bar stool than in a comfy lounge chair. Please do so. Take your place at the bar. Here you can also see lots of old wine bottles and various utensils on the eight metre high bar shelf. Barkeeper Maurizio is waiting to spoil you with classic cocktails that he reinterprets with originality and an abundance of flair. The craft cocktails consist exclusively of handmade ingredients or ingredients selected specifically for each individual drink. Home-made syrups and honey from the region refine the cocktails the last dash of bitters is produced on a small scale. Maurizio and his team also have an

affinity for old liqueurs and brandies; for the wines, we have an international offering with a large selection of organic, biodynamic and semi-natural juices of the vine. The wine growers in the producing regions are among the very best. These are unique wines that are rarely found on menus! Our authentic snacks and innovative finger foods, to name just a few examples, are simply delicious. The intentionally open-plan kitchen gives you a great view through to the HUUSpub. And if you want - everything is available to take away. When we say «everything», we don’t just mean drinks and chips. Not at all. We spoil our guests with exciting and healthy snacks to take away. Why not enjoy your mini burger on the balcony of your room or savour a piece of veggie pie on a bench in the nature garden. Everything is there to experience. Welcome to BARadise - here’s to you!

SAY CHEEEEEEEESE! Very cosy. What more do you want. Just a few steps around the HUUS and you’re there - our ‘second hotel’ at the far end of our newly designed adventure garden. True. Its small and modest. But it’s exactly this homely atmosphere that makes all the difference. Simply awesomely comfortable. Say cheese again: this little HUUS is the finest address far and wide for all fondue and raclette connoisseurs. You know: that food with the hot, melted cheese. There is nothing more Swiss, more Saanenland. But there’s cheese... and then there’s cheese. We only use cheese made in the region. The farms in the holiday regions of Gstaad-Saanen are almost all just about milk. The strict requirements for the Alpine
cheese and the famous «Hobelkäse» start with the feeding of the cows. For instance, dairy cows can only eat what grows on the Alpine summer meadows. Which, for you, means nothing other than that we serve a truly top product when it comes to your fondue or raclette feast - and that’s really worth saying cheese for! See you soon at the chalet! TAPAS Y VINO
Wikipedia knows: Tapa (Spanish for «cover» or «lid») is a small appetiser that generally accompanies wine and beer in tapas bars. In Spain, tapas are usually served in tapas bars and bodegas and eaten while standing. And we have them too: the first traditional tapas bar in Saanenland was created in the wonderful adit. Here, in the atmospheric HUUS underground, we serve traditional Spanish tapas and a great selection of fine wines from large wine bottles. With just one little difference: the delicious appetisers can be eaten while sitting down in the adit. It goes without saying that you will want to enjoy your trendy culinary adventure trip to Spain in comfort. ¡buen provecho y salud!

The rumours have already spread far beyond the HUUSborders. HUUSguests can enjoy a number of additional services included in the price of an overnight stay, so-called add-ons. This offer, unique throughout Switzerland at least, is making headlines. But it gets even better: Alpinzentrum, professional organiser of outdoor activities and operator of an in-house, recognised snow sports school operates a satellite office, a so-called basecamp in the HUUS.

Here, HUUSguests have the opportunity of contacting the professionals at any time, getting first-hand information about the outdoor activities programme and booking the offers reserved exclusively for HUUSguests on-site. These include daily guided hikes, freeride taster days with a mountain guide, guided snowshoe hikes or use of the ski shuttle service. In summer, there is river rafting, canyoning, climbing lessons, the rope park, guided hikes, mountain bike tours and much more. In addition, an officially recognised HUUSowned Swiss ski school is offered. For children, lessons and ski equipment hire are included in the room price as an extra add-on. HUUSkids up to the age of 9 can also use the cable cars for free. Oh yes. It is most important to also mention. In the HUUSowned shop, HUUSguests have the option of clothing themselves with the latest sports clothing as well as ski, snowboard and hiking shoes. Skis, snowboards, sleds, snowshoes and, throughout the year bikes and e-bikes, can be rented or reserved here too. The teams at the Alpinzentrum and the HUUSshop are ready and look forward to welcoming you!
Alpinzentrum Gstaad The Alpinzentrum Gstaad with its subsidiaries «Swiss Adventures GmbH» and «Alpinzentrum Gstaad Snowsports GmbH» is considered to be a specialist in snow sport and outdoor activities as well as events throughout Switzerland. The company, which started off as a mountain climbing school, was founded in 1996 and is one of the biggest providers of outdoor activities in Switzerland. Since March 2002, the company has also been ISO 9001:2000 certified. Risk minimisation is a top priority for Alpinzentrum. Managing director, Simon Bolton: «We are responsible for our customers and employees. The safety and quality concept is being continuously developed, while we ensure that all new insights are included in our processes as quickly as possible.»

SNOWBIKING They’re a little crazy aren’t they – pedalling around in the snow with their bikes like that. Europe’s ‘Winter Festival of Snow Biking’ promises to be a great mix of fun, competition and partying every year in January – both on and next to the route. The festival in and around Gstaad comprises a four-day stage race, an eliminator night race, an MTB EXPO and a great deal of partying for participants, spectators and supporters. Fat bikes, mountain bikes and other bikes with wide tyres can be used as snow bikes. The festival also gives beginners the chance to discover this new biking trend and offers all bike enthusiasts an excellent opportunity to get to know the world of snow biking better. HUUS is delighted to accommodate media professionals and the press centre and participate at the forefront in the biking with a snow bar and catering. Tip: Bike to the event with the free HUUSbike...!
TORTOUR
Tooth injury > What now? < Almost half of all children and young people suffer accidents at home during recreational activities or sport where teeth are involved. A tooth can become loose, displaced or knocked out as a result of external forces, for instance, as the result of impact or a fall. Part of the tooth can also break off. The chances of successfully keeping the tooth are very good if the response is quick and calm. Always consult a dentist – for each tooth injury – irrespective of whether it is a milk tooth or a permanent tooth. Heavy bleeding is stopped by pressing a cloth on the wound. If there are any signs of dizziness, vomiting or unequal pupils, there may be a concussion. Please contact the hospital or a doctor immediately in this case. Teeth that have been loosened or displaced should initially be left in their position. Teeth that have been knocked out or which have broken off are best stored in a container filled with water or milk, or in a cloth moistened with saliva. The root of the tooth should not be touched and no attempt should be made to clean this tooth. Special tooth saver boxes have been specially developed for such accidents. They can be obtained at the HUUS reception in cases of emergency or you can purchase them as additional security for your first aid box. This ensures the vitality of tooth cells for at least 24 hours at room temperature according to the manufacturer’s specifications. In order for tooth injuries and any subsequent related costs, which often become evident later in the year, to remain insured via the mandatory basic medical insurance or the company/non-workplace accident insurance, each accident must be reported promptly by you and the treating dentist.
HUUS is fully there! Joko Vogel, co-founder and organiser of Tortour, the first non-stop, multi-day ultra-cycling event in Switzerland, enthuses already today: «The Tourtour Cyclocross in Saanenland will have a lot of resonance amongst bikers». Three races that primarily go through forests and over dirt roads always take place in June. «On the whole, it is not too difficult but also not too easy», is how Vogel describes the level of difficulty. On Friday, the programme includes a prologue over 20 km, followed by a 90–100 km race on Saturday and the final spurt on Sunday with a distance of 50–60 km. A daily winner and an overall winner of all three stages are selected. Vogel is convinced that it will be a great experience for all participants. Besides the sport elements, the beautiful landscape and the camaraderie also promise to be unforgettable highlights. For it is only too appropriate that the HUUS serves as the base for the «Tortour Cyclocross» and that various packages are offered for participants and their companions. What’s more: the race starts directly in front of the HUUSdoor. At exactly 1 111 metres above sea level. If that is not a good omen...!

GSTAAD
According to legend, created by the hand of God. The region has a further 9 chalet villages alongside Gstaad, located at an altitude of between 1 000 and 1 400 metres. According to legend, God wanted to take a short rest whilst creating the world. The imprint of his hand thus shaped the Saanenland region. His five fingers formed the valleys, with Gstaad nestling in their midst. It is hard not to believe that supernatural forces are at work when you let your eyes wander over the natural beauty. And nestling amidst the lakes and mountains lie the homely, Alpine villages with their characteristic chalets. Come and experience Gstaad and the Saanenland from its most beautiful side. Fantastic activities and famous events take place here the whole year round. Gstaad is home to several, regular sporting competitions: the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open international men’s tennis tournament, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour grand slam tournament, the Hublot Polo Gold Cup polo tournament and the Gstaad Winter Games.
Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations
The Menuhin Festival Gstaad in the summer, established in 1957 by Yehudi Menuhin, is one of the oldest and most famous festivals of classical music. In winter, the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad offer classical concerts. The Gstaad Country Night Festival takes place in September. Star chefs from all over the world visit the Saanenland region during the Davidoff Saveurs Festival in late summer. The current dates can be found in our events calendar. The new children’s paradise on the fourth floor is right next to the restaurant where we serve breakfast, and dinner for those guests with half-board. It includes a special children’s restaurant «Bambini Club», which is designed and furnished in a child-friendly way. In their very own world, kids are given professional supervision and spoilt with special children’s meals. Care is taken to make the meals child-friendly, but also healthy and balanced at the same time. Besides the delicious meals, the large glass drawing wall is also a great highlight with kids. They can use special pens to draw on the wall however they wish. By the next day at the latest, the whole surface is cleaned and their artistic creations can start all over again. Dinnertime is also art time! The supervised children’s restaurant means that the adults can enjoy their evening meal ‘undisturbed’. Of course, children accompanied by their parents are welcome in the main restaurant at any time.

Summer PREVIEW 2017 River Rafting
Hiking & Biking
Conditions for rafting and canyoning on the Saane and Simme rivers are nothing if not exhilarating, especially while the snow is melting. But even at the height of the summer a rafting adventure on the cool waters is lots of fun for the young and young-at-heart.
Over the past few years the region has evolved into a biking mecca, in addition to being a classic hiking destination, and is also connected to interregional bike routes. The cultural and sporting events come to the fore in summer.
Hiking The level of difficulty is set on the day of the hike and according to guest requirements. The hikes are guided by a local guide who knows the most beautiful parts of the region. Hikers from 10 years of age can enjoy the unspoiled landscapes and mountain lakes and marvel at the imposing waterfalls without a care – just wonderful for hiking!
