Bulletin Editor Hi Gators, The school year has just started, and Green Valley High School’s Key Club is kicking off the year with the right foot forward. With the start of the year, our club has already focused on what is most important— service — however, we have one thing in the back in our minds, RTC! Hopefully, the rest of the year goes as well as it has already has started! Sincerely, Nick Phillips

August “On August 13th, Division 28 South held their monthly DCM. This DCM was held at the JW Marriott during the Kiwanis DCON. Two other divisions from region 5 also used this venue to hold their DCM, however we separated for most of the DCM. The DCM, went as usual, except for the amount of guest speakers" -Nick Phillips , 12

DCM

“The DCM was held at the J.W. Marriot in a huge ballroom. People spoke about Dance Marathon and t-shirt designs for Key Club. We then separated into four groups by division. The presidents gave there reports and afterwards I left. -Thao Huynh , 10

Freshman Orientation August 23, 2016 Green Valley High School

Freshman “On August 23, 2016 our club participated in our school’s freshman orientation to represent our club and to recruit more members. As a senior and being in key club for three years, it was very unreal to see freshman and to be one to recruit then considering I used to be the one recruited, It was fun talking to parents and students about what key club was about and what we do and to get them interested in it. It was really great to see more people being interested in a club that i love very much.” - Ronnee Villamor , 12

Orientation

“The freshman orientation was all but nostalgia. Seeing each freshman walk up to the key club table wondering if we actually make keys reminded of myself three years ago, except I was one of the officers advertising key club. We had a lot of freshman at our table, one of them being my little brother, which was relief because I was a bit worried if any would come but it all went smoothly. We made a huge success in recruiting new members and now I can't wait for them to experience what key club is all about! - Phillip Penalber , 11 13

August D2 “The August social at Coronado was really fun. I enjoyed the ice breaker game it was really fun, during the Ice breakers I met new people. It was also really fun bringing my friends along to their first key club event. I also got to meet the new people which was really cool. I had so much fun tie dying and watching movies I think that social was one of my favorites so far.” - Savannah Crawford , 10

“The august social at Coronado was so much fun! We had free food, did a scavenger hunt—which team valor won—tie dyed shirts and a movie! I met so many new people and talked to some people i haven't seen in awhile. Overall everyone was having fun and everyone was so nice. Can't wait for the next social!” - Moira Lopez , 10

RTC “On September 9, 2016, our club had our very first RTC prep meeting for the year. Coming in that room and seeing about 40 people or more was honestly a surprise, and a great one at that. It was so cool to see so many students interested in Key Club. In this meeting, we learned our cheers and practiced our first cheer. After the prep, some students stayed after to make RTC spirit gear in return for some service hours. It was a fun day, especially for a first RTC prep. - Ronnee Villamor , 12

Spread the “This past weekend we volunteered at a place called Spread the Word where people come together to help clean books. It was fun because we all got to bond more with each other while we did our service. We played song games and all sang together to pass time as we cleaned. It was awesome to see everyone come together to help the community.” - Kylie Teruya , 12 “On Saturday morning , students from GVHS key club gathered at Spread the Word. Spread the Word is an organization that donates books to children. When I went to Spread the Word a group of my friends from Key Club all sat together at a table, and got ready to clean some books! There was GVHS key club, other key clubs from different schools and some people doing community service. We were given a bucket of books to look over and make sure they were in good condition to donate. While cleaning the books I got to know some new people and had fun talking to them. I hope our Key Club comes back to Spread the Word, and others come to help!” - Kayla Sotelo - Rios 24

Word Nevada “I got the first volunteering experience since I immigrated to USA, and that day rewarded me with a truly valuable experience. After joining Key Club, I signed up for Spread the Word Nevada. Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing childhood literacy within low-income communities by changing lives one book at a time, I spent 2 hours to help select books from people donated for them make sure that those books still good for reading and suitable contents for kids. Also I have to clean book covers, check inside books and erase words that people wrote or printed on it. It sounded boring but actually it was much enjoyable because most of those books are so cute and colorful. I and my team saw books that carried us back to our childhood such as Cinderella Princess, The Pooh Story Book, The Cat in the Hat, Madeline, The Giving Tree, etc.. I still remember there was a book that has a music box inside, I don’t know what song is it but I love that harmony. In addition, there were some educated books that teach kids songs and my friends sang those songs together. They sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, what lovely voices! I was born and grew up in Vietnam, I came here when I was 15 years old, since 2 years from now, this volunteering experience is an opportunity for me to communicate and make friend with awesome people. Saturday from 9am to 11am usually is my best time to sleep, but I have changed my schedule and I made a charity very meaningful for my community in general and myself in particular. It’s not something huge but I’m so proud of myself and in the future I would participate in more and more activities like this.” - Vy Nguyen 27

President’ “Wow! What an amazing start of the school year. Between freshman orientation, the August social, and the donuts we had the last general meeting, it's been a blast. Though many students are stressed as can be with classes and other activities coming into full force, key club has become a safe haven from stress. Overall, this year key clubbers have all been enjoying general meetings and our RTC preps like never before. If our board keeps up this great work, we'll reach so many unthinkable goals. “ -President, Mackienzy Kahl
