Naples is like no other town in the Finger Lakes, boasting a reputed 18-hole golf course, Bristol Valley Theater, three wineries, two breweries, a distillery, shops, and a surprising variety of unique, mouth-watering eateries. Our valley is close to two downhill ski resorts, as well as day and nighttime groomed cross country skiing! Mix in excellent eateries, shopping and many craft beverage tasting venues, and you have a convenient winter weekend get away! And Naples is a Sunday brunch town, boasting six different farm-to-table restaurants to choose from. Naples is also home to Joseph’s Wayside Market, a large seasonal open air farm market that has been a Finger Lakes destination for over 65 years. Another year-round must-see destination is Artizanns Gifts from the Finger Lakes, a two-story gallery featuring over 200 artists of all genres. Don’t forget to visit beautiful Grimes Glen, located right inside the village limits, which features a onemile water-walk and two cascading waterfalls. Another feature in Naples are many of the most diverse and acclaimed hiking trails in the FLX: Hi-Tor, Conklin Gully, Clarks Gorge and Cumming Nature Center, just to name a few. Naples is also known for its live music in multiple venues including two concert venues. Then, of course, there’s the Naples Grape Festival in September, one of the most iconic festivals in the Finger Lakes since 1961. Along with the Grape Festival comes other Naples autumn traditions: grape pie! Thousands and thousands are sold every year, and you can also pick your own grapes in the fall at Jerome’s U-Pick Grape Farm. Naples is a beautiful and fun place to visit, no matter what the season. It’s an outdoor mecca for hiking, fishing (April 1st is the Naples Rainbow Trout Derby), biking, and skiing. Book your stay in the Naples Valley, choosing from hundreds of beds available in our B & Bs, Airbnbs, cabins and lodges! Visit ExploreNaplesNY.com to see our events calendar, and plan your get-away to one of coolest towns in Western New York. You’ll want to come back again and again!

Celebrating their twenty firstyear anniversary, Finger Lakes Dental Care currently has five locations committed to providing the highest level of dentistry to their valued patients. They take pride in their exceptional dental team and work together to foster personal and professional growth. Their goal is to deliver the best dental care, highlighting the Finger Lakes Dental experience for all. Their flagship Canandaigua office opened on October 28, 2002, aligning with the move of Dr. Jason Tanoory and his wife Kara to Canandaigua that year. The captivating beauty of Canandaigua and its inviting

hometown atmosphere enticed the Tanoorys to choose it as their home and the initial setting for their family and Finger Lakes Dental Care’s practice. On January 10, 2017, Finger Lakes Dental Care expanded, opening their second location in Naples, NY.

A Modern Approach to Dentistry Finger Lakes Dental has a commitment to lifelong learning and staying on top of the newest research and technology available in the dental field. It’s not just a dental office; it’s an experience. From state-of-theart equipment to a dedicated team, they ensure their patients receive the best care possible. Finger Lakes Dental Care At the core of Finger Lakes Dental is a set of values that guide every action. They provide more than dental care: they create an environment that nurtures personal and professional growth. It’s about being more than colleagues; it’s about being a family, focused on constant learning and improvement.

A Passion for Changing Perceptions What inspires them daily is the opportunity to transform the conventional perception of dental visits. Driven by a passion to change the way people feel about going to the dentist, they strive to make each visit positive and impactful. Their goal is not just to fix teeth, but to positively impact the lives of the communities they serve.

Pride in Exceptional Moments Finger Lakes Dental team members say their favorite moments are the smiles and words of their patients. When patients exit the offices, expressing that they’ve never experienced a dental visit like it, the team knows they’re doing something right. Finger Lakes Dental is more than just a place for dental care; it’s a haven of the most up-todate technology and a team that is caring, knowledgeable, informative, and thorough.

Growing with Purpose At Finger Lakes Dental, the team aspires to change lives in the communities they are privileged to serve. Committed to the local communities, they donate time, services, supplies, and financial support in any way they can. Their teams play a crucial role in deciding how and who they serve in their communities. Finger Lakes Dental recognizes that no patient should be denied proper oral care because of financial status, so in addition to participating with a wide variety of health insurance plans, they also offer payment plans, an in-house dental savings program, and multiple third party payment options, to allow all patients the care they deserve. At Finger Lakes Dental Care, there is always room for good. They strive to grow while maintaining control over culture and quality, with the ultimate goal of helping as many people as possible. Naples Trout Derby It features heavily contoured greens, dramatic changes in elevation, and has challenging rolling fairways with many mounds and sand bunkers. All skill levels will enjoy the course. As winter thaws and creeks flow freely in spring, the Naples community reconnects for the eagerly anticipated annual Rainbow Trout Derby hosted by the Naples Rotary Club. Anglers young and old cast away on April 1st each year in hopes of catching the winning trout.

Come and play Reservoir Creek or check out the new clubhouse. The scenery alone is worth a visit! Make a tee time and find out more at rcgolf.com or call 585-374-8010

The Derby features two distinct groups: the traditional group, in which contestants catch fish and weigh them at the fire hall, and the catch-and-release group, in which contestants capture fish, photograph it with a provided ruler and scale, and release it back into the creek. The traditional group offers numerous divisions, including men’s, women’s, girl’s, and a seniors’ division for participants aged 65 and above, as well as a grand prize for the largest overall catch. Committee member Micah notes the traditional method has been the norm, but the catch-and-release approach has gained popularity recently. Typically, winners in each division secure victory with fish weighing between 8-10 pounds. Last year, due to a delayed annual fish migration caused by a late ice melt from Canandaigua Lake to Naples Creek, winners averaged 7.5 pounds per fish. To participate in this year’s Trout Derby, pre-registration is mandatory. Sign-ups will take place at Sutton’s Inn in the village of Naples throughout March, or at the Naples Firehouse (derby headquarters) on March 31st from 5-9 pm and April 1st from 4-7 am. The registration fee is $5 for kids and seniors, and $10 for adults. All proceeds directly support the Naples Rotary Club and its ongoing initiatives to benefit the Naples community. Naples Grape Festival

Each fall, Western NY glows with its autumn brilliance. Residents treasure the Naples Valley and tens of thousands of visitors from the Finger Lakes region and beyond flock to Naples for its iconic harvest season. The grape harvest means the renowned Naples Grape Festival in September. Recognized as “The Best Festival in the Finger Lakes,” the Naples Grape Festival is synonymous with fun,

laughter, and smiles for all. Highlighting the best of local wineries, culinary delights, and talented artisans, alongside performances by local, regional, and national musical acts, the festival’s immersive experience keeps visitors returning year after year. The event also raises critical funds for the Naples Historical Society, dedicated to preserving the town’s rich history, and the Naples Rotary Club, which actively contributes to the community’s future.

naplesgrapefest.org

The roots of the Grape Festival date back to 1874 when it originated as an agricultural fair. Grapes first took root in Naples in 1848, with the establishment of the Naples Valley Wine Company in 1854. A hiatus during the 1940s because of World War II and a decline in grape production halted the festival, but it resurged in 1961, thanks to the Naples Historical Society. The festival gained notable attention in 1961, attracting national celebrities such as Paul Harvey and Robert Kennedy. Although canceled again in 1971 due to unruly crowds, the Grape Festival triumphantly returned in 1989, celebrating Naples’ bicentennial. Since then, the festival has only grown in popularity, becoming a cherished annual tradition. The festival celebrates the Naples Valley grape harvest and pays homage to the distinctive character of the Naples community and its hardworking, creative, and friendly residents. Throughout the years, the event has featured parades, carnivals, street dances, grapestomping, as well as a variety of artisans, local cuisine and beverages. An annual highlight of the festival is the “World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest” held on Saturday, September 28th, on the Memorial Town Hall side front lawn. Grape pies originated in the 1950s, credited to Naples resident Irene Bouchard. The annual contest invites participants to submit 100% homemade grape pies for anonymous judging. Winners receive monetary prizes and plaques, but also the coveted bragging rights for the year. Another crowd favorite is the Brahm-Moore Craft Beverage Garden, a popular tasting area on the festival grounds. Featuring regional wines, craft brewers, and distilleries from the Finger Lakes region, the Garden requires an admission fee but offers a delightful tasting experience. Presale tickets are available, and sealed bottles of wine can be purchased at each winery’s table. A convenient Valet Service allows visitors to store purchases for later retrieval as they enjoy the festival. Live music takes center stage throughout the Naples

Grape Festival, showcasing original acts from across the Finger Lakes region and beyond. The weekend promises a diverse and energetic musical experience for all. For the full music lineup, visit naplesgrapefest.org/music.php. In addition to the lively entertainment, the festival features a vast vendor area at the Memorial Town Hall and Naples High School, where high-caliber local artisans display their wares. With something for everyone, this vendor area adds to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. Given the festival’s popularity, traffic can be challenging, prompting organizers to recommend arriving in the village before 11 am to avoid congestion. Public parking is available at Hazlitt’s Lake Niagara Lane location, with a free shuttle running throughout the festival. Handicapped parking is also accessible off Academy Street on the north side of Naples High School. As September approaches, John French of the Naples Rotary assures visitors that special events will be added to the festival. For the latest updates, interested attendees are encouraged to check the festival’s website or Facebook page at naplesgrapefest.org and facebook.com/naplesgrapefestival.

The Olde Country Store and More A Local Approach

As co-owner Jenny Wells says, “Stop by and step back in time” at the Olde Country Store and More! The shop is known and celebrated for its German roots and for its enormous candy wall! This main attraction consists of 189 bins with over 400 kinds of candies, evolving all the time based on customer recommendations. Co-owner Denise Wells raves about the expanding international candy options; there’s always something new to discover. Besides candy, this unique shop carries a variety of local foods and products, such as honey, maple syrup, and cheese. They have expanded their selection of consigned local crafts, artwork, gifts, and Finger Lakesthemed apparel, with the upstairs full and ever-changing with these selections. With a wide variety of handmade blankets and textiles, wooden bowls, jewelry, candles, soaps, and decorations, there’s something for everyone in the Olde Country Store and More!

German Roots

The mission of the Olde Country Store and More is to stay as local as possible – with a German twist! The

German roots of the store stem from the family. Jenny and Denise were born in Germany when their father, Jeff, a Naples native, deployed with the Army, and met their German-born mother. Jeff relocated to Naples in 2014 and Jenny and Denise relocated in 2015, with the idea to open a store to combine their roots in both Germany and the Finger Lakes. Jenny, Denise, and Jeff opened the Olde Country Store and More on July 4th, 2015. Inspired by their German ancestors’ handmade ornaments, the family decided to import glass ornaments from Germany year-round. With their own personal German connection as well as the population of German descendants in surrounding towns, the shop maintains a dedicated corner showcasing imported German products. German chocolate is a fan favorite!

The Story Behind the Green Heart of the Finger Lakes®

Have you seen the green heart with the eleven etched Finger Lakes on bumper stickers in the area? Jeff designed that logo to signify their store features local products. He hired a local woodworker to create a plaque displaying the design, and when customers inquired about purchasing the plaque, Jeff copyrighted the design and since then, The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes® has been featured on a variety of products at the Olde Country Store and More as well as at over 40 wholesale partners in the Finger Lakes region! Reasons to Shop Local Drive down any Main Street in the area and you will find unique shops featuring local goods and services. These businesses and organizations work hard to make our communities wonderful places to live. Let’s show our support by keeping money in the community. Love Naples? Show it by shopping local!

1. Keep Money Local: Sales taxes fund community services such as police and fire protection, street repairs, and trash collection. Local businesses also tend to support the nonprofits around town and buy and sell with other local businesses, so even more money stays in the community. 2. Find Diverse, Locally-Made Products: Local

business owners sell local products, which helps create more local jobs. Stores often carry inventory not found at chain stores, including unique items from local artists and farmers.

3. Keep it Cost Effective: Smaller businesses have

less overhead than larger stores and tend to better meet customers’ price needs.

4. Make Personal Connections: Small business owners are the decision-makers at the store, and they tend to build stronger relationships with customers, which helps customers and the community. 5. Experience Better Product Knowledge and Better Service: Local business owners are well informed about products, so customers asking questions often receive better product advice. Because they know their customers, small business owners can easily adjust inventory to include goods and services customers want. Local business owners typically get to know their customers, going the extra mile to ensure satisfied customers.

6. Support Future Growth: Shopping locally shows pride in your community and helps protect businesses that make the community unique.

The Woods A Sustainable Oasis in the Heart of Canandaigua

Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and embrace organic, regenerative agriculture at The Woods, a flourishing community farm just 10 minutes from Naples and Canandaigua. Nestled in the lush Finger Lakes region, The Woods, founded by Canandaigua native, Casey Wood, invites residents and tourists to immerse themselves in the bounty of nature through interactive farming experiences and exploration on its 30-acre property. The Woods embodies a commitment to permaculture, where diversity fosters strength. Wood, who acquired the property in spring 2021, champions sustainable practices, focusing on no-till farming, seasonal cut flower cultivation, and the production of native perennials, including berries, lavender, grapes, and fruit trees. Wood integrates livestock such as chickens, pigs, and goats to enhance soil quality, while bees and

bats contribute to pollination as well as insect control. Wood’s goal is to minimize environmental impact through sound land stewardship. At the heart of The Woods is a farmhouse Wood meticulously restored, as well as a horse stable and a 4,000-sq ft barn to host events. The property features about 10 acres of farmable land and a new 3,000 sq ft greenhouse, 10 acres of hiking trails, and breathtaking views of Canandaigua Lake. Visitors can engage in hands-on farming experiences. The farm offers a variety of memberships, including community-supported agriculture (CSA) or “farm share,” allowing patrons to work in the garden in exchange for fresh produce. With family memberships, enjoy event discounts, educational programming, and weekly food shares. The Woods is more than just a farm; it’s a community hub and a destination for families and friends to spend quality time together. Wood envisions a place where people come together to learn about sustainable living and self-sufficiency. As The Woods develops, community involvement becomes crucial, and Wood encourages residents to join the journey. The Woods collaborates with a variety of area nonprofits, including the Canandaigua Lake Watershed, the Farm Bureau, Ontario County Historical Society, and the ARC, and The Woods is working towards its own 501(c)(3) status shortly. Wood beams that this journey has been “overwhelming, exciting, a labor of love,” and “it’s so great to see a dream I had now become reality.” Visit thewoodsflx.com to learn more.

Naples Hotel The Naples Hotel, located in scenic Naples, NY, has a rich and long-standing history. Originally built in 1895 by Jefferson Brown, this historic landmark was formerly a common stopping point for its convenient location between Geneva, Dansville, and Bath on the old stagecoach line. If the walls could talk, they would have many stories to share. From memories shared by past owners to the famous speeches held on the balcony to the unexpected “haunted history,” this hotel bursts with character, charm, and beauty. Whether visiting Naples for a wedding, festival, or enjoying one of the many outdoor activities, the Naples Hotel is a great spot for an overnight getaway with plenty to do and much to see – and only a short drive from Rochester, Syracuse, and the surrounding areas. It’s boasted that George Washington’s army trained and practiced near the original site of the hotel years before its construction. The hotel has hosted several prominent figures, including the late Robert F. Kennedy. While it has undergone a few renovations and owners, this charming hotel never lost its allure to the public. New owners Tom and Destiny Salviski took over the site in 2020 and attract great interest in the hotel as one of the Finger Lakes’ finest tourism attractions. Recently, it even appeared on the Haunted History Trail of New York. Both scenic and historic, the Naples Hotel and Restaurant has become a must-see establishment in the town of Naples. This historic, boutique hotel features many modern luxuries guests experience at a traditional hotel, but also includes many of the quaint, personal touches usually exclusive to a bed and breakfast. Here, for instance, online reservations, contactless keypad entry, and Smart TVs are complimented by handwritten notes, specialty

coffee, fresh fruit, and even local chocolates. The modern Victorian aesthetic is comfortable and welcoming, featuring high-quality antique furniture, velvet fabric, damask wallpaper, and gold accents. Many rooms even have themes unique to the Naples area, which adds to the ambiance. Each suite has its own bedroom, bathroom, and living room with new carpet, new windows, and working fireplaces. Two suites have full kitchen facilities, providing a comfortable place for long-term guests to feel at home. With ten guest suites, an on-site restaurant, bar, and private event space, the charming hotel is the perfect location for those visiting the Naples area. The hotel’s location is convenient for weddings, ski holiday getaways, and staycations. The hotel offers “stay and ski” promotional packages with Bristol Mountain, allowing guests to avoid the check in line at the slopes. The hotel is the headquarters of the 2024 Vintage Wines and Valentines event, a staple Naples event offering visitors a romantic journey through the village of Naples while sipping local brews, wines, and spirits and sampling chocolates. No stop at the Naples Hotel would be complete without dining at The Social Bar and Taproom in the lower level of the hotel. This vintage bar and restaurant offers an assortment of savory steak and seafood menu options, including lobster mac and cheese, apple bourbon salmon, chicken marsala, shrimp alexander, prime rib, artichoke parm bites, and more. The Social has a vintage feel with the fun and electricity of a modern brewpub. With entertainment every week, such as Monday mic nights and “wine down Wednesdays,” there is always something to enjoy at The Social Bar and Taproom. Tom and Destiny invite you to discover the Naples hotel experience, as you’ve never seen it before. from Valerie Dimino (local author, editor, and frequent Quiet Place guest) It’s QUIET! You’re unlikely to cross paths with any other people during your stay. If there are other houses anywhere in the vicinity, there’s an understanding that this is a place for peace, calming, and reflection. At the same time, it’s close to great food, wineries, trails, shops, and more. Naples, Canandaigua, and Bristol are a short drive, so you’ll have plenty of options if you decide to venture out. Beautiful views, surrounded by nature, are a standard accommodation. Every property has a combination of deck, porch, sunroom, and/or fire pit, to encourage you to soak up your surroundings. You’ll feel like you’re in your own little oasis. Every property has a hot tub, and several also have a soaking tub inside or an elaborate shower, for an added element of melting away your stress. It’s well stocked with amenities. You’ll have that “off the grid” feeling while still having electricity, plumbing, heat / AC, and Wi-Fi! Each property has a fully stocked kitchen, making it easy to cook a meal or relax with a cup of coffee (which is also included). Each property is unique, with its own personality. The décor and thoughtful touches demonstrate how much the owners care for their properties and their guests. There are welcoming details at every turn.

Engine 14 Brewery After retiring from 22 years with the Rochester Fire Department, Greg Borden decided it was time to start working on his dream of opening a brewery. Greg and his wife Kate worked through two years of renovations on a historic building, all through the trials and tribulations of Covid, and finally, Engine 14 was born. The Brewery officially opened in June 2022. Engine 14 Brewery is home to the Borden’s 1953 Ward LaFrance fire truck, which the brewery is named after, as well as retired fire apparatus as decor. Greg and Kate believed that it was a now or never opportunity. “We didn’t want to spend the rest of our lives wondering what could have been,” they say. There were lots of back-breaking hours of labor the Bordens did personally due to Covid, spending most of their days there, only going home to sleep. Greg and Kate’s dreams and the vision of their brewery turning into reality before their eyes kept them pushing forward. They both believe the reward has come in seeing local residents as well as tourists from around the world enjoying their space! “We wanted a fun space where people could gather with family and friends. We have a large space people can use for parties.” So far, Engine 14 has hosted bridal and baby showers, retirement parties, birthday parties, and even a wedding! The hard work has definitely paid off! Engine 14 Brewery is located at 52 West Ave. in Naples, within the Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars complex. In fact, their tasting rooms are only steps away from each other! If you are visiting Naples and want to check out two tourist destinations, you can do it here in one stop! They also have an incredible staff that will make you feel very welcome! Don’t be afraid to ask them about all that Naples has to offer. Traditional beer styles at Engine 14 include Pilsner, Cream Ale, Stout, Dunkel, Kolsch, Schwarzbier, and Belgian Tripel. They always have nine beers on tap and a seltzer, all made in house, and customers love their beer! There is always something going on at the brewery! Trivia, cornhole, and euchre leagues, and music every Friday and Saturday night, are just a few of the things that keep people coming back! The music is popular as there is never a cover! The brewery is also involved in a number of community events throughout the year. What’s in store next at the brewery? “We are working on adding a kitchen to our facility and we are hopeful it will be open in 2024. It’s been a long time coming but it is definitely going to be worth the wait!” For more information about the brewery, visit their website at engine14brewery.com, call them at 585-531-0014, or follow them on social media.

BAKING GRAPE PIES SINCE 1977!

Cindy’s Grape Pies

5 Academy St., Naples, NY • (585) 374-6122

www.CindysGrape.com

Cindy’s Grape Pies It’s no secret that grapes are woven into the history of Naples, earning its title as the “Grape Capital of the World.” Locals find creative ways to celebrate the abundance of this versatile fruit, with pies being just one of the area’s many grape delicacies. Although the concept of a grape pie may seem foreign to some outof-town visitors, once they try it, they are convinced – there is no dessert quite like it! The first pies originated from Irene Bouchard who made them to attract new customers to the local Redwood Restaurant. From there it took off, with people seeking out this sweet treat and even putting a unique spin on their own. The story of the grape pie is engrained into the fabric of the town as not just a regional food offering, but a metaphor for the ingenuity of the town itself. Locals celebrate making something that is already great – simple concord grapes – into something even more exciting. The star of this famous dessert is the Concord grape, which is plentiful in the Naples region. There are many grape pie sellers throughout the area, but none of them are as loved or well known as Cindy’s Grape Pies, which has served the community, offering pies and other delicious baked goods made from scratch, using fresh locally sourced ingredients for over 40 years. Founded in 1977 by Cindy Trecziak, the pies were initially a way for Cindy to earn some extra money for Christmas gifts. They quickly became a big hit, and Cindy began selling them full-time until 2019 when she sold the business. Current owner, Matt Cadrette, says,

“We knew what a beloved institution Cindy’s Grape Pies had become over the last 40+ years and we didn’t want to see it go.” With a culinary background and strong connection to food, Matt continues Cindy’s timehonored tradition. Cindy’s remains one of few places in the area where people can get grape pies throughout the entire year, not just during grape harvest season. Although there are many ways to make grape pies, Cindy’s uses an oldfashioned crust and separate cooking process for the grapes, which gives them a nice texture that preserves the grapes’ integrity. In addition to grape pies, Cindy’s also sells other seasonal pies and baked goods made from fresh New York State produce. Their grape-filled cookies are one of the most popular items. Cindy’s even has a pie door where customers walk up to order baked goods. It’s how Cindy’s has operated since its inception, and it’s a charming way to order dessert! It’s a fitting touch for a town that boasts a wonderful sense of community and Cindy’s keeps the tradition alive, one sweet treat at a time. Cindy’s baked goods can be purchased from the pie door in Naples Friday through Sunday from 10am – 5pm. Orders can also be made by contacting Cindy’s on social media, emailing cindysgrapepies@gmail.com, or calling 585-374-6122. Cindy’s grape pies are also available at various locations, including Schutt’s Apple Mill (Webster), Casa Larga Vineyard (Fairport), Zarpentine Farms (Hilton), and Deconninck Farm Stand (Spencerport, in September and October only). To see what they are up to along with news, hours, and other information, follow Cindy’s on Facebook and Instagram @cindysgrape.

Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars Just a few miles south of Canandaigua Lake you will find Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars – one of the most well-known and historic wineries in the area. Home to the popular Red Cat wine, be sure to stop by when visiting Naples! Grapes have been in the Hazlitt family for more than 170 years. The family’s history started when David Hazlitt and Clarissa Roberts Hazlitt purchased land in Hector, NY where they shipped fruit to regional markets and early wine pioneers, including Widmer Wine Cellars. In 1985, the family was faced with a tough decision as crop prices dropped. That’s when Jerry and Elaine Hazlitt started Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards and released the awardwinning Red Cat wine. The history of Red Cat is as rich and colorful as the drink itself. This sweet red wine is made using highquality Catawba grapes, a labrusca variety native to the Finger Lakes. When Hazlitt 1852 opened, it was popular in the area to create wine using these grapes, but it was typically pink in color. Wanting to do something different, Jerry blended the Catawba grapes, which give the wine a sweet, tangy zing, with red hybrid grapes to give it a ruby red color. When harvesting grapes in the vineyard, the farmers often referred to the Catawba grapes as “the cats” for short, and that is how the name “Red Cat” was born. Red Cat was an immediate success and continued to grow in popularity and recognition throughout the years. Today, it is available in several states along the East Coast, available to ship to 38 states, and remains the most popular wine in Hazlitt’s portfolio. So popular, in fact, that to keep up with demand, the family expanded in 2011 to open a production facility and second winery in the village of Naples, Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars. This historic property was previously Widmer Wine Cellars, one of the first in the region with a rich history of its own.

Over time, the family has renovated and restored the original building, but also infused its own history into it. Today, sixth-generation grape growers and sibling co-owners, Doug Hazlitt and Leigh Hazlitt-Triner, continue to expand the family’s legacy. Though it’s most wellknown for its Red Cat wine, Hazlitt offers an impressive lineup of award-winning, high-quality sweet and dry wines, hard ciders, and wine seltzers. Regardless of your palette, you are sure to find something you will enjoy. When visiting, experience the tasting room, tour the large production facility, and hike the neighboring trail that weaves through the historic Widmer vineyard. Enjoy wine in the main tasting room, out on the patio, or in the grassy outdoor picnic area. Hazlitt’s has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that is family-friendly and welcomes friendly dogs … and guests even receive freshly popped popcorn with each tasting! Wine slushies are available daily along with a selection of seasonal snack baskets that include a variety of local goodies, charcuterie, and other perfect pairings.

Hazlitt extended its Cat line!

RAISING SPIRITS IN THE FINGER LAKES:

Hollerhorn Distillery’s Resilient Return In 2018, foodies/artists/live music lovers Karl and Melissa Neubauer fulfilled their dream of opening Hollerhorn Distillery in Naples, offering the Finger Lakes community a haven for craft spirits and community gatherings that persisted through COVID challenges. However, in the early hours of May 12, 2022, a devastating fire swept through the distillery, destroying the tasting room, bar, dining area, and around 100 barrels of whiskey. The resilient spirit of the Neubauers, combined with overwhelming community support, turned this tragedy into an opportunity for rebirth.

Community Unites in the Face of Adversity

When tragedy struck, the Neubauers saw this period as an emotional reset, allowing them to reevaluate priorities both personally and for the distillery. The Naples community rallied around Hollerhorn. A GoFundMe campaign raised $56,480, highlighting the deep connection locals felt with the establishment. Melissa Neubauer expressed her gratitude in an interview with CITY Magazine, stating, “The community was so amazing. You start realizing how much this space meant to people here in Naples.” With community support, Hollerhorn reopened in less than a year in a temporary tasting room affectionately named “The Remedy Room.” In June 2023, they also began hosting concerts at their outdoor stage even as reconstruction continued. The fire led to an unexpected development as well – the birth of the “Phoenix” series of whiskey. Karl, head distiller, explains that the intense heat from the fire accelerated the aging process, resulting in a more mature-tasting whiskey. This series became a symbol of resilience and innovation.

Grand Reopening and New Offerings

Hollerhorn Distillery celebrated its 5-year anniversary in September 2023, with a grand reopening with live music and the release of a new single-malt whiskey marking the distillery’s triumphant return. With a larger tasting room, improved mezzanine area for private parties, and new roofs covering second-floor decks, the facility at 8443 Spirit Run returned better than ever, ready for the community. Karl and Melissa told the community upon reopening, “Thank you! You’ve stood by us, lifted us, and cheered us on the entire way, and we will never tire of saying we appreciate you.” In response to the fire, Hollerhorn Distillery introduced several new initiatives upon reopening. Notable among them are the Sunday Social Happy Hour, the Hollerhome House Concert series, and classes/workshops featuring local artisans. These events aim to engage the community and offer diverse experiences, showcasing the distillery’s commitment to fostering connections beyond its spirits.

Diverse Menus and Craft Spirits for Every Palate

Hollerhorn Distillery’s offerings extend beyond spirits with a diverse menu. Sunday Brunch features unique dishes such as Almond French toast and Gado

Gado in addition to twists on classic breakfast fare, delectable charcuterie, and delicious burgers, tacos, and sandwiches. There’s something for every palate at Hollerhorn at brunch and the rest of the day as well. The distillery’s food menu caters to a variety of tastes, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. The distillery’s commitment to local sourcing and craftsmanship extends to its culinary creations. Hollerhorn’s current spirits reflect a commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. From the Tree Spirits category with unique flavors like Flamed Maple, Seedling, Sapling, and Old Growth, to the Ginship Redistilled Gin, Malt in Motion Single Malt Whiskey, and Devil’s Bedroom Whiskey, the distillery offers a broad

range of options. Fruit Brandies, such as South Holler Aged Apple, Erdbeer Strawberry, Kirsch Sweet Cherry, Wassermelone, and Grappa Pomace Brandy highlight a dedication to preserving the essence of fruit.

Looking Forward: Raising Spirits

Hollerhorn Distillery’s journey from tragedy to triumph exemplifies the power of community support and resilience. The Neubauers’ commitment to innovation, community engagement, and the craft of distilling sets a high standard for the Finger Lakes region. As they continue to evolve and introduce new initiatives, Hollerhorn Distillery remains a beacon of hope and inspiration, raising spirits in many ways.

Old School Cafe Unveiling Nostalgia

Nestled in the heart of Naples, Old School Cafe, owned by Joe Scardilla and Trish Aser, opened its doors in August 2021 after a meticulous renovation. Joe’s experience with restaurants dates back to his family’s landmark steak & seafood restaurant, The Conesus Inn, and five years catering for the Grateful Dead among other notable food-driven adventures. Trish is renowned for the Brown Hound, which opened in Bristol Springs in 2005 and moved to Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery in 2016 with Joe’s help. The two have created a haven where vintage charm meets culinary excellence at Old School Cafe on Main Street, Naples. Stepping into the cafe is stepping back in time. The interior, a careful blend of nostalgia and charm, sets the stage for an experience that transcends the ordinary. Trish’s culinary expertise shines through in the delectable food and pastries, while Joe pumps out the top notch coffee and espresso drinks. What sets Old School Cafe apart is not just the ambiance but the genuine connection formed with patrons. The cozy dining area and expansive front yard, away from the Main St. bustle, provide a space where guests become friends. Trish says the CDGA 4-Country roast and local favorite breakfast sandwich are must-tries. For Joe and Trish, the essence of their work lies in personal connections. Knowing their guests transforms the daily grind into a meaningful experience. The inspiration? Creativity and positive feedback from a satisfied clientele. The cafe’s proudest moment, Trish says, was opening day, marked by a line of eager patrons, a testament to the community’s anticipation after a 14-month renovation of the space. As the business thrives, the duo’s goal is simple – maintain the high standard of food, service, and ambiance year-round. Looking ahead, Old School Cafe plans to add a reproduction of the original bell and belltower, enhancing the cafe’s historical charm. Naples Brewing Company Welcome to Naples Brewing Company, a vibrant hub of community spirit and craft excellence nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes. Founded in 2020 by Trevor Andrews, Larkin Ryan, and Dan & Jillian diGiovanna, this brewery has become a testament to passion, resilience, and the spirit of collaboration. Trevor and Dan, both engineers with a shared dream, met at RIT and, after years of working on opposite sides of the country in their field, embarked on the journey of crafting their own beers. What started in a home garage evolved into the cherished Naples Brewing Company, officially opening its doors in 2021 due to the pandemic challenges. The brewery’s dedication to local products is evident in every sip. Their flagship NYIPA boasts ingredients

sourced exclusively from New York State, with other beers also featuring hyper-local elements, often from locations within three miles of the brewery. As a nano-farm brewery, Trevor and Dan meticulously brew all its small batch craft beers on-site, and they partner with local businesses whenever possible to deliver a true Naples-centered product. The taproom, a bright and cozy space, welcomes well-behaved dogs and encourages patrons to bring outside food. Stop in for the live music throughout the summer. From the outset, the focus has been on community. Naples Brewing Company is actively involved in local events, from Light Up Naples, Vintage Vines and Valentines, the Grape Festival, and even community trick-or-treating when everyone’s out and about. The brewery goes beyond serving excellent craft beers; it provides meeting spaces for organizations, hosts aid stations for trail runs, offers seasonal community classes, such as a rain barrel workshop, floral arranging, wreath making, etc., and occasionally hosts pop-up shops with local artisans. Naples Brewing Company is proud to announce upcoming projects with the Naples Library, a local trail building group, local artists, as well as a closer partnership with the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association. Come for the beer, stay for the community at Naples Brewing Company, where every sip tells a story of dedication, collaboration, and the love for craft brewing. tequilas, and scotch. Their mixologists showcase a signature drink list, emphasizing classics like Manhattans, Boulevardiers, Negronis, and Martinis. With Prosecco on tap, they stand out in the area, and their Sunday brunch features the favorite bottomless mimosas and the best Bloody Mary in town!

The Social Restaurant and Taproom, often referred to as “the hotel restaurant” within the historic Naples Hotel underwent a remarkable transformation under Kevin and Leeann Barton of Barton Hospitality, Inc. The Social marked its one-year anniversary in September 2023, celebrating a successful year of passionate and dedicated service to the community.

Special events at The Social include dinner pairings with wine, bourbon, tequila, and craft beers. Monday Open Jam Sessions and monthly Songwriters nights pay homage to the hotel’s musical legacy, and Leanne says The Social is quickly becoming a key place to experience live music 2-4 times each week. The Social also offers stay and dine packages, room service, and event discounts for hotel guests during the winter months.

The journey began when the Bartons, captivated by the history, elegance, and décor of the space, decided to take on the challenge of revitalizing “the hotel.” They seized the opportunity and created a space that pays homage to the past while offering a contemporary experience for guests. The Gatsby Lounge, with its iconic geometric designs and glass rod sconces, sets the tone for a casual and intimate atmosphere. In contrast, the Taproom underwent significant renovations, revealing layers of the hotel’s rich history. The removal of a wall opened up the space, and new art deco sconces were added to enhance the 1920s aesthetic. The highlight of the Taproom is a thirty-foot mahogany bar, one of the area’s oldest back bars. Head Chef TJ Hess, originally from Hammondsport, NY, brings his barbecue expertise and butchery knowledge to create a menu featuring Hess’ spin on classic steak and seafood options. Locally sourced ingredients, such as grass-fed Black Angus Beef, Flour City squid ink pasta, and Pleasant Valley Marsal for Hess’ famous chicken marsala add a special touch to offerings. The Social offers a perfect setting to relax after exploring, featuring a diverse liquor list with bourbons,

Inside The Naples Hotel, there’s another hidden gem – “The Little Easy” event space. With dim lighting, a private bar, and a separate entrance, it exudes a classic prohibition vibe. This space is perfect for parties and events for 50-75 people. The Little Easy offers à la carte menus, catering, and off-site bartending services, licensed in both Ontario and Monroe counties. Call to book your event onsite or offsite. The Social staff considers themselves a “hospitality playground,” offering a menu strongly anchored in rich traditional fare, focusing on high quality beef and seafood with a careful selection of premium bar eats. This year they will continue to partner with local vendors and expand their seasonal and vegetarian options through participation in CSAs. Leanne explains that their first Grape Fest with a full liquor license, both bars and all 52 tables active, was the Naples Hospitality Superbowl, and she says the homegrown team was amazing to watch as a year of passion, patience, and talent came together. The team at The Social knows that each service is a chance to make someone’s day. Stop in today to experience the excellent service and delectable options at 111 South Main Street.

Festival attendees for two consecutive years. Jim said Colby’s grape pie sales at their bakery continued after the festival due to repeat customers and exposure to the largest crowd ever at the 2023 Naples Grape Festival. In a stroke of genius, Jim Colby envisioned a new grape-infused delight – grape fry cake donuts. These delectable treats, made with local ingredients and crafted in Colby’s very own donut bakery, took the festival by storm. The donuts were such a hit that they sold out in no time, leaving a line of eager customers vying for a taste of this unique and irresistible creation. Not content with resting on their laurels, Jim and head catering chef, Justin Ford, took the innovation to new heights in their second festival year. They crafted a grape-infused BBQ sauce that elevated Colby’s famous pulled pork and chicken sandwiches to unparalleled heights. Jim said, “Festival officials were skeptical at first, but when festival attendees lined up enthusiastically to experience the first-ever Naples Grape BBQ sandwich, they were impressed.”

Colby’s Ice Cream & Bakery Crafting Culinary Marvels with Grape Goodness

Colby’s Ice Cream & Bakery has always been attuned to the desires of its customers, and when the call for grape pies echoed through the charming bakery, owner Jim and bakery manager/pastry chef Emmalie Ladd wasted no time in turning this request into a delectable reality. Recognizing the need for a unique twist, Jim dove into the world of Finger Lakes-style grape pies, a culinary masterpiece that would soon captivate taste buds. After meticulous sourcing, the Concord grape emerged as the chosen star, celebrated for its fruitful flavor, vibrant color, and consistent quality. In a strategic move to ensure a year-round supply of these delectable grapes, Jim forged a partnership with an upstate New York grape farmers’ cooperative. This collaboration not only guaranteed a continuous stream of grape puree but also strengthened Colby’s commitment to supporting local agriculture.

The overwhelming success of the grape-themed offerings at the Naples Grape Festival underscores Colby’s commitment to pushing culinary boundaries while staying rooted in the flavors of the region. Jim’s creative vision, coupled with the dedication of Colby’s team, continues to make the Naples Grape Festival a must-visit for those seeking a symphony of unique and delectable treats. Colby’s dedication to delivering quality extends beyond festival grounds. Customers can enjoy these mouthwatering grape pies year-round, freshly baked and available at their bakery at 7272 West Henrietta Road in Rush. This year, Colby’s is set to unveil its latest creation – the “Peanut Butter Grape Pie,” a fusion of rich, nutty flavors and the sweetness of Concord grapes, a taste experience like no other. This innovative addition is poised to become another star in Colby’s constellation of irresistible desserts. As Colby’s Ice Cream & Bakery continues to blend tradition with innovation, the Finger Lakes-style grape pies stand as a testament to their commitment to quality, local sourcing, and culinary excellence. Come savor the sweet symphony of flavors at Colby’s, where tradition meets creativity, and every bite tells a story of passion and dedication.

The Naples Red Mill

The Naples Red Mill is a time capsule of 19th Century upstate New York. Built in 1815, the Mill was vital to Naples at the beginning of the mechanized new world, as people harnessed the power of nature to produce the goods needed to sustain life. The Mill used water from Grimes Glen to transform grain into flour. It became so important in its day that it redefined the location of the Naples Village. It drew settlers from neighboring towns, and it became a meeting place where the news of the day was discussed as folks gathered on its wrap-around porches. The Mill was built by Simeon Lyon in 1815. Thirty-five years later, Lyon’s son, S.C. Lyon and partners, Watkins and Story, renovated the Mill using the original structure and foundations. Through the 1800s ownership changed several times, and new improvements were made. Steam power was added in 1870, followed by a new waterwheel in 1872, and a general overhauling was begun in 1881. In 1889, N.W. Clark purchased the Mill and installed a [grain] roller. B.L. Clark changed the water wheel to a turbine in 1905. Electricity was substituted for waterpower in 1911, and water was forever shut off from the Naples mill race in 1920. After its purpose as a functioning mill came to an end, the building was purchased by Widmer’s Wine Cellars in 1930 and was used for storage. In 1965, the winery donated the Mill to the Village of Naples. In 1975, Bill Vierhile, Naples Town Historian, and local business owner, bought the Red Mill from the town. After making many upgrades and repairs, he donated the building and its contents to the Naples Historical Society in 2015. Currently, the Red Mill serves as storage for a vast

collection of artifacts and antiques that date back to the early 1800s. Many items define the era of early Naples work history and the settlement of early Western New York, for example: tools, local signs from the 1800s, carriages, and agricultural implements. Items from the 1900s include memorabilia from the Naples movie theater, built in 1920, which due to an accidental fire was destroyed in 1961. In short, the Red Mill contains the memories and treasures of the community from its earliest days. The historical society hopes to restore the mill and create a Naples History Museum for all to enjoy. A $100,000 capital campaign was announced in May 2023 to raise funds for the first phase of restoration – stabilization and new siding for the mill. For more information on this project see “Bill’s Dream” on the NHS website – www.NaplesNYHistoricalSociety.org The mission of the Naples Historical Society is to promote an interest in the history of Naples and the surrounding area by maintaining and displaying historical collections and exhibits, and by providing educational programs.
