GAME NOTES
BONNIES HOST VCU AIMING FOR SEASON SWEEP
• St. Bonaventure eyes back-to-back victories after bouncing back from consecutive road losses in a big way with a 91-72 win over Saint Joseph’s Friday night.
• Bona is aiming for its first-ever season sweep of VCU. The Bonnies took a 9-8 alltime series lead over the Rams with an 89-78 win in Richmond earlier this month. SBU previously scored two wins over VCU in the same season during the 2020-21 campaign, splitting the season series with the Rams before winning the rubber match in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game.
• SBU enjoys one of the best home court advantages in college basketball. Since 2015-16, the Bonnies are 54-15 (.782) at home in Atlantic 10 games. • The Bonnies bettered their offensive output from last Tuesday’s 54-50 loss at Duquesne by 41 points in Friday’s 91-72 win over Saint Joseph’s. That represents the biggest scoring swing in back-to-back Atlantic 10 games, during regulation, since the Bonnies scored 90 in regulation of a 100-97 overtime win at Duquesne on Jan. 22, 2015 before a 53-48 loss at Rhode Island three days later.
• The last two games represent what has been a bit of an up-and-down season for SBU. In their 12 victories, the Bonnies average 82.5 ppg while shooting over 51% from the field and almost 43% from long distance. In seven losses, however, SBU averages 59.9 ppg while shooting 37% overall and 25% from deep. • Daryl Banks III is on this week’s Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after unquestionably his best game of the season Friday vs. Saint Joseph’s. He poured in 29 points while matching a career-high of seven 3-pointers (7-11). He also added five assists in the victory.
• In Friday’s win, the Bonnies had three players top 20 points: Banks (29), Moses Flowers (23) and Chad Venning (21). It was the first time that three Bonaventure
players have topped the 20-point mark during regulation in the same game since November 2016.
• Charles Pride has just seven turnovers in over 500 minutes of game time, ranking eighth nationally in turnover rate. Point guard Mika Adams-Woods also has 63 assists against 25 turnovers. Pride is one of two guards nationally to own over 1,700 career points and 850 rebounds, joining Baylor Scheierman of Creighton. TRENDING NUMBERS 3 – The Bonnies are doing well both in shooting from beyond the arc as well as limiting opponents from deep. Bona ranks fourth among A-10 squads in three-point percentage at 37.0% while holding opponents to 31.5% in their long range attempts. For three-point percentage defense, only Richmond (29.8%) and VCU (29.2%) have been better at limiting teams in 3-point tries. 7 – Daryl Banks III sank seven 3-pointers in the win over Saint Joseph’s Jan. 26. That marks the most triples in a game by a Bonnies player since Banks hit six vs. George Mason over a year prior on Jan. 4, 2023. 11 – SBU had a season-high 11 steals vs. Saint Joseph’s Jan. 26, led by three from Mika Adams-Woods. Barry Evans, Assa Essamvous and Chad Venning all had two swipes apiece. 23 – The 23 points tallied by Moses Flowers vs. Saint Joseph’s represent his most in an Atlantic 10 game.
78.0% – St. Bonaventure ranks 12th nationally so far this year in free throw percentage at 78.0% on the season. Daryl Banks III is best on the team, sinking 90% of his tries at the line (37-41).
89 – Bona’s has scored 89 or more points seven times this season, the most times in a season that the Bonnies have reached that total since also doing it seven times during the 2016-17 campaign and finished the year as A-10 regular season co-champs.

GAME NOTES SERIES HISTORY This will be the 18th meeting all-time between St. Bonaventure and VCU. The Bonnies have won five of the last seven contests between the two programs since January 2021.
The 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship Game came as the rubber match after two regular season meetings that year. St. Bonaventure captured its second Atlantic 10 title in program history, 74-65, over VCU in Dayton that season.
Prior to their first matchup as A-10 foes in 2013, the Bonnies defeated VCU in backto-back years during the late 70s - a 63-61 victory in the 1978 ECAC Championship Game to reach the NCAA Tournament as well as a victory in the following season on home court. In the 1978 ECAC Championship, Tim Waterman’s buzzer beater sent the Bonnies to victory - and a spot in the NCAA Tournament - in Rochester’s War Memorial Stadium with one of the most memorable shots in program history.
ABOUT VCU

• VCU is 13-7 in its first season under head coach Ryan Odom who came to Richmond from Utah State. Prior to his stint out west, Odom coached at UMBC where his squad orchestrated one of the greatest upsets in NCAA basketball history as the 16th-ranked Retrievers knocked off No. 1 Virginia in 2018.
• After an 0-2 start to A-10 play, VCU is starting to hit on all cylinders as winners of five in a row to climb the conference standings. Max Shulga has been one of the league’s top guards after following Odom from Utah State. He leads the team with 14.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, starting all 20 contests. Graduate forward Sean Bairstow, who also followed Odom from Utah State, missed the first 12 games due to injury before making his VCU debut Dec. 22. He averaged over 10 points per game at Utah State last year and is posting 10.8 ppg in his nine games since returning from injury this year. Also joining the roster is Joe Bamisile who missed 10 games waiting for an NCAA waiver decision to grant him eligibility after previously playing at George Washington, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. Bamisile starred at GW two years ago, averaging 16.3 ppg, and is averaging 13.5 ppg in 10 games with VCU. • Havoc may no longer be the style at VCU under a new coaching regime, but the Rams remain strong defensively, ranking top-70 nationally in scoring defense while holding opponents to 66.8 ppg. VCU also blocks almost five shots per game, 38th in the country. Opponents only shoot 29% from distance as well, standing 20th in Division I.
• VCU has won 11 straight true road games, the longest streak in the country. They’re 3-0 on the road this year and 20-3 in their last 23 A-10 road contests.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK The GoBonnies.com Student-Athletes of the Week presented by CPL are men’s basketball redshirt senior Daryl Banks III and women’s track freshman Meghan Lex. Banks poured in 29 points in Friday’s win over Saint Joseph’s, going 9-for-13 from the floor and 7-for-11 from 3-point land. It was his best performance of the season as he also handed out five assists. His seven threes tied a career-high he first set last year vs. Bowling Green. The fifth-year guard from Somerset, N.J. now has over 1,500 career points and 234 3-pointers entering Tuesday’s game.
Daryl Banks III
Lex had an outstanding indoor track debut in Bona’s season-opener at RIT on Friday night. She immediately made a mark in the program record book as she set the school record in the mile and also jumped to second all-time in the 800 meters. Lex established a new school record in the mile with a winning time of 5:18.92 in the RIT Invitational. She beat out 24 other competitors and crossed the finish line over a second quicker than second-place finisher Amelia Gilbert of RIT (5:20.27) as she claimed victory. She also crushed the previous Bona record mark of 5:25.29 set two years ago by Amberlee Robertson at Atlantic 10 Championships.
Meghan Lex
The New Jersey native also ran a strong time in the 800 meters as she finished second out of 30 runners with an effort of 2:28.25. She was less than a second off the winning mark of 2:27.67 by Mia Vizcaino of Brockport.
