Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

SEPARATED BY CRISIS, REUNITED BY VOLUNTEERS (NAPSI)—Each year, armed conflicts and natural disasters wreak havoc on a global scale. Yet even after the immediate crisis passes, the devastation can last much longer— particularly when families are torn apart amidst circumstance and chaos. In these cases, family members are often left with few resources and no sense of where to begin their quest to find their missing loved ones. Fortunately, there is a worldwide organization that works to reconnect families who have been separated by international crises. The American Red Cross—part of the world’s largest humanitarian network— offers free and confidential services, striving to reconnect loved ones when:

• Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. • The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred.
Servicing your dental needs in a safe and relaxing environment.
Across international boundaries, the organization offers a beacon of hope for families to be reunited. And though the process can take time, Red Cross volunteers do everything in their power—from phone calls and online searches, to in-person interviews and worldwide travel—to fulfill families’ hopes. “These people have broken hearts,” said Fidele, a Red Cross volunteer from Burundi who was previously reunited with his father after a 20year search. “We ask questions about what their loved one looks like or where they last lived to help us with our search. These questions bring them back to the time they were forced to separate from their families.” Little Words, Big Impact The organization also makes it possible for displaced individuals to reach out to their families—even half a world away. The family messages transmitted by the American Red Cross can be very brief, but the three short words—“I am alive”—may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught loved ones. To begin a search, contact your local Red Cross chapter—the critical link in your community to the global Red Cross Red Crescent network. You can also call the free national helpline at (844) 782-9441. From Latin America and Africa to Asia and Europe, the American Red Cross helps people in some of the world’s most at-risk communities. This work is powered by the generosity of volunteers and donors. To learn more visit redcross.org/international.

Does Pet Insurance Extend to Pet Sitters?
PUPPY PALACE Servicing the City of Batavia
585-682-3219
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I left my dog Shep in the care of a pet sitter for a week while I was away on business. The sitter texted me that Shep cut his paw during a walk in the nearby woods, and they took him to my veterinarian for care. Shep is doing fine now. I have pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to pay for this. The injury occurred while the sitter was walking him. The sitter says that injury and illness are my responsibility to cover. Who should pay? -- Bill in Chicago
anitaspuppypalace.com
Penny Saver
DEAR BILL: Did the sitter give any details of how Shep was injured? The circumstances are important. For example, if Shep was on-leash and stepped on an unexpected piece of debris in the path, that’s different than if Shep was let off-leash and was running free in the woods. But, if you normally let him off-leash in the woods and instructed the sitter that it was OK to do that, then that’s another consideration. Talk more with the sitter to get more details. In the meantime, pay the vet and submit the reimbursement claim to the pet insurance company.
Penny is almost 3 and never far from my side. She hogs the couch the bed and the front seat!
Professional sitters routinely include a statement in their contract with clients that any illness or injury is the responsibility of the client. This protects them from financial loss if something does happen. However, if they are accused of deliberately neglecting or abusing a pet in their care, that statement won’t protect them. On this note, I’ll add that sitters should purchase liability insurance that specifically covers them and their business in case a claim is made against them -- or worse, if they’re injured while caring for someone else’s pet.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them. TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Emphasize time management. Hectic schedules can quickly derail resolutions. Many people want to eat healthier and exercise more but find their time is stretched pretty thin, which can make it difficult to get to the gym or prepare healthy meals at home. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year’s resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.

Toys for Tots Memorial Day Detachment # 468, Marine Corps League would like to thank all the individuals and organizations that donated toys or money to the annual Toys for Tots campaign. We were able to distribute over 6,400 toys to approximately 1,900 children through our participating partners due to your generosity. Many of these children would not have been able to enjoy a Merry Christmas without your help. All toys that were collected in Ontario and Livingston Counties were distributed within those counties through the various participating agencies. We are very grateful for their help. We look forward to working with you all again next year.
Seasonal [Local Bridge] is BS Why is the [local bridge] closed in the Summer? It makes it pretty tough to ride a bike between [local town] and [local town]! Also, why didn’t they make the thing 20 feet higher than it is? Seems like they could have done a lot better job with that bridge than they did! Would it really be so tough to change the schedule to let people get across in September, October, and April? We need authority to step up I work at a store in my local town and in my dept. we had a bullying situation. This person tried to ignore the individuals who would harass them, made rude comments or just blatantly gave dirty looks just to get them going. It was horrible to see them stressed or in tears because of this unnecessary drama. This person went to the two different managers to tell them what was going on. Their response was “Just ignore it” or “I’m not a HS Principal, just figure out a way to deal with it.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When we first start we have to watch videos on harassment and bullying and afterwards we need to sign a paper stating that we watched it. The video clearly states that if you are experiencing uncomfortable situations like this, the person to go to was your manager. And they have the audacity to tell them to just ignore it? Do your job as a manager and help protect the employees you’re supposed to oversee and help keep protected from situations like this!

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away. NOW HIRING Qualified Aerial Operators BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Upgrade walkways. Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. According to the renovation experts at HomeAdvisor, homeowners typically pay between $6 and $12 per square foot for new concrete walkway installation. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas first before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced. Hidden issues: Contractors may uncover all sorts of issues that need to be addressed before a project can progress. Examples include the presence of asbestos (common in older homes), plumbing problems, incorrectly wired electrical systems, and leaks or moisture issues. These problems also can impact the cost of the project, so set aside some money in the budget for unforeseen expenses. Chances are you are going to need some extra money to handle a few surprises during the project.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
HOW DOES ACID-REFLUX AFFECT ORAL HEALTH? Heartburn, acid indigestion, and acid reflux happen when stomach acid leaks up the esophagus and into the mouth. When this happens two or more times a week, it is considered a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Over time, stomach acid erodes tooth enamel and begins to dissolve tooth surfaces. People who suffer from GERD need to take extra precautions with their oral health. Refrain from brushing your teeth right after a reflux episode, as the acid weakens teeth and makes them susceptible to damage from brushing. Instead, rinse your mouth with water or a water and baking soda solution, which neutralizes acid and prevents further damage. Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum promotes extra saliva production, which lowers oral acid levels.
take charge of their oral health and do what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. We’ll work together as a team with you to achieve the long-term benefits that quality dentistry affords. Treating both children and adults, our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P.S. Defining Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Finding Out How to Treat It ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men. Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland. Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results. Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid. T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3. Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered. Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily. It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s. ***

We’ve Been Busy! Our local family-owned business continues to grow and evolve in 2024 and we want to take this opportunity to share with you all we have going on to start the year.
Printing We’re very excited to announce our long-term investment in new printing equipment that will arrive in February. We’re incredibly grateful for the history and longevity of our current machines, which arrived in the 1980s from East Germany. But as our capabilities have grown since then, so too has our need to update how we serve you. You might notice our Penny Saver size adjust to a standard 8.5x11 magazine format in the coming weeks. You might also notice the colors, registration and overall quality of our printing improve. We’re investing in us, so that we can invest in you for many years to come. A New Edition Coming this spring we’ll be adding a new weekly tenth edition in Wayne/Ontario counties. It will be distributed in the Macedon, Palmyra, Newark, Clifton Springs and Phelps communities. Please help us name this new edition by going online to gvpennysaver.com/nameit.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A Paris morgue needed help identifying bodies in the 1860s, so decided to open its doors to the public. They probably underestimated people’s morbid curiosity, though, as soon 40,000 people a day were coming to look at corpses. NEW LISTING

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD
12 NOON - 3PM OR CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT Fieldcrest Meadows Subdivision • 36 Fieldcrest, Corfu, NY
Women can measure their bust around the center of the breasts and back. Chest measurements are taken as high up as possible on the widest part of the chest. For women, this will occur directly under the breasts. The waist is measured at the narrowest point width-wise, usually just above the navel. Sleeves are measured from the middle of the back of the neck over the top of the shoulder and down to the point where the sleeve will end. Men should measure a collar around the base of their necks where a shirt collar would sit. Hip size should be taken around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks when feet are placed together while standing. Inseam is measured from the top of the inner thigh to the ankle. Measure shoe size while standing in stocking feet. Pay attention to shoe width as well. Knowing body measurements can make clothes shopping easier and ensure people are wearing the right sizes.

Here’s a Tip • File this one under safety AND energy smarts: Clean the dryer vent after every load. Clean the dryer vent screen monthly with a gentle soap and water bath. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before inserting back into your dryer. • “I used to struggle with plastic wrap every time I tried to use it. But now, it’s a breeze since I learned to do these two things: One, keep plastic wrap in the freezer. It unrolls evenly, not one side or the other. Two, use a serrated knife to cut it instead of relying on the metal strip down the side of the box. You lay it out on the counter, and just run the knife down the edge you want to cut. Works like magic, and it’s no longer frustrating.” -- G.S. in Georgia • Store an apple or two with your potatoes to keep them from sprouting. Be sure to check them often. David Buckel: The Batavian Who Died to Call Attention to Earth’s Plight B Y D AV I D R E I L LY Edited and printed with permission from Reilly’s Small Town Talk, originally published in The Batavian, 7/28/2020
D
avid Buckel was an environmentalist, an LGBTQ advocate, and an attorney. He started his life in Batavia. He ended it in 2018 in New York City to draw attention to the plight of the Earth at a time when it seems so many people are focused on other things. David was born in Batavia on June 13, 1957, the son of an agricultural consultant and a florist. He was a bright student. At Batavia High School, where he graduated from in 1975, he was a member of the National Honor Society and voted the boy Most Likely to Succeed by his classmates. He participated in varsity cross-country, track, and tennis. David went on to college at the University of Rochester, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1980. After graduation, he worked as an attendant caring for in-home hospice patients. After earning a Juris Doctorate degree in 1987 from Cornell University Law School, David began his career as an attorney. While living in Rochester, David was introduced by friends to a man named Terry Kaelber. They hit it off, became a couple, and moved to New York City. Inspired by his earlier hospice work, David began his career at Legal Aid, assisting those in need of legal help but who otherwise couldn’t afford it. In 1995, David began working for Lambda Legal, which helped LGBT (Q was added to the initialism starting in 1996) youth, and he became a director of the organization’s marriage project. During his tenure at Lambda Legal, David was part of the counsel responsible for two big victories: In 1996, the court ruling in Nabozny v. Podlesny established a legal precedent to protect LGBTQ students from being bullied in all school systems, and in 2001, David was one of the attorneys for JoAnn Brandon, who won a lawsuit in Nebraska against a local sheriff for failing to protect her transgender child who was raped and murdered in 1993. In 2008, David retired from Lambda Legal to devote his time and energy to helping preserve the environment. He became an expert in composting and the reuse of organic garbage. He spent several years interning at Red Hook’s Columbia Street Farm in Brooklyn, where he learned the intricacies of composting peoples’ kitchen waste into fertilizer to grow more food. Red Hook had been built on old baseball diamonds to become the biggest urban farm in the United States. Eventually, David applied his talent for organizing and planning to become the director of the Brooklyn operation. With the assistance of volunteers, Red Hook processed 225 tons of compost every year. David cultivated his workforce of volunteers as well as he did the organic material, and he was respected, even beloved, by them. Several workers said he changed their lives.
increasingly upset with the trajectory of government action and inaction. In early 2018, David emailed his assistant at Red Hook with details on everything to do in case of his absence. He also labeled everything at the site, equipment, tools, and supplies. His assistant asked him if he was thinking of retiring, but he assured him he was not. Then, before dawn on the morning of April 14th, David Buckel left his Brooklyn home and headed to a nearby park. Photo credit Lamda Legal. He told no one he was leaving. He stopped at a patch of grass off the walkway and apparently built a small wall of earth around himself. He sent an email to the media detailing what he was about to do, poured a flammable substance on himself, and lit it on fire. Within a minute or two, David was dead. The obvious reaction was shock and sadness. His family, friends, coworkers, former colleagues, and former classmates were bewildered. They couldn’t believe that a quiet, gentle, private man who cared so deeply for others would choose such a public way to end his life. He hadn’t even said goodbye to his loved ones. David’s final email stated: “My early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.” No one will ever completely understand why he chose to make a statement and end his life in such a horrific way. But hopefully, people, including Batavians from the community where he grew up, will remember him for the contributions he made to the world and as the good, kind, helpful person he was.
As he developed his passion for tending to the environment, David pursued a parallel interest in Buddhism, with its tenets of inner peace and caring for others. Buddhist protest methods likely contributed to his untimely end.
