Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accreditedschools.Architectswhoworkonresidentialspacesoftenwork with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. TheDOEalsoadvisesthatshading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapescanreducepreviously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which meanstheywillblocksolarheatin the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

Install a low-flow shower head. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful and costly. Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.

Carol Ann May, age 87, died peacefully on April 9, 2024, at the Teresa House in Geneseo. She was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada to the late James and Medora Cloney. Survived by her beloved husband, Carl May, of Honeoye. ey had been married for almost 66 years. Carol had been a resident of Honeoye for almost 70 years. She is also survived by her three children, Scott (Yanxia) May of Honeoye Falls, Sheila Malloy of Honeoye, and Steven (Sue) May of Bristol. Carol also has two granddaughters, Nichole (Pat) Mulkern and Courtney (Paul) Aylward as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Addison and Mackenzie Mulkern.

Carol was a member of the United Church of Christ in Honeoye for many years. e church and its members played an important role in her life both spiritually and personally with her many friendships. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross, organizing the local blood drives for almost 20 years. Carol enjoyed dancing, playing the piano, cooking, knitting, crocheting, gardening, and visiting with her many friends.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 20th, 2024 at 2pm at the Honeoye United Church of Christ, Main Street, Honeoye, NY. Interment will take place privately at Richmond Center Cemetery in Richmond, NY. Brent W. Coryer

Honeoye: At age 79, Brent passed away suddenly on Monday, April 8, 2024, at his home in Honeoye. He was born on September 3, 1944, to the late Armand and Alice (Gauthier) Coryer. Brent was predeceased by his brother, Alan Coryer, and sister, Deborah Coryer.

Survived by his wife, Sandra (Hart) Coryer; daughters, Brenda (Brian) Ward, Tricia (Chad) Carlini; sisters, Sandy (Melvin) Terry, Marilyn Newell, Kim Coryer, Kelly (Barry) Rock. His in-laws, Sherry (Dan) White, Sheila Ford, Patricia (Jerry) Raymond, Michelle (Ed) Gareau, Dale (Pam) Hart, Kevin (Vickie) Hart, and Timmy (Judy) Hart, Cindy Hart; his grandchildren, Andrew (Stephanie) Ward, Brent (Kelsey) Beeley, Aaron (Ceara) Ward, William Beeley, Caleb Beeley; greatgrandchildren, Wesley, Charlotte, Sutton, and Della, as well as many nieces and nephews.

When Brent got out of the Navy in 1966, during a night out with friends, he met the love of his life! He and Sandy enjoyed a whirlwind courtship and married on February 18, 1967. ey moved from the Adirondacks to Rochester where Brent worked at Kodak for thirtyone years. During that time, they welcomed two daughters, Brenda and Tricia, and created a beautiful life for their little family.

When his girls were growing up, Brent rarely missed any of their games or band concerts. Despite the long work days, he was a handson father and devoted family man. He said “I love you” freely and was a good husband to Sandy for fi y-seven years! ey enjoyed spending time with friends and family at their camp in Highmarket, New York, where he was o en heard saying, “Good music, good food, good company. What more could you ask for?” In their later years, they devoted much time and effort to the Honeoye-Hemlock American Legion and Auxiliary Post 1278, where he served as commander during 2016 and 2017. ey also took pride in helping with St. Mary’s Annual Garage sale every summer.

Brent was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing with his brother, Alan, nephew, Robbie, friends, and eventually, his grandsons. He also enjoyed coaching their Little League teams and serving as a volunteer umpire for Honeoye Junior Baseball. He spent many hours playing ball with his grandsons in the backyard, going through baseball cards with them, and indoctrinating them into becoming Boston Red Sox fans!

Brent’s Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 15, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8961 Main St., Honeoye. Brent will receive Military Honors a er his Funeral Mass. Memorial contributions can be made to: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Honeoye-Hemlock American Legion Post 1278.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.

A SWEET TREAT FOR GET-TOGETHERS

Yields 64

Crust

21/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 cups butter or margarine, melted

Filling

3 cups pecan halves, divided

2 cups packed brown sugar

3 eggs

4 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

Powdered sugar, optional

Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack.

Meanwhile for filling,reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans. Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Remove from oven; cool completely.

Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar, if desired. Cut into 32 squares using a utility knife; cut each square in half diagonally.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

Constant Aleve and Ibuprofen Consumption Can Cause Damage

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, age 70, had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his neck, for which he would take Aleve to relieve his discomfort when needed. Just before Christmas last year, his back began hurting so much that he went to his doctor, who said to get up and move more. (We have always exercised and remained active in life, but he did slow down due to his pain.)

My husband then added ibuprofen to the Aleve he was already using. His doctor said that the pain is due to osteoarthritis in his mid-back area. Apparently, there is nothing to do for it but take Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose. Ibuprofen or Aleve isn’t recommended because it causes liver and kidney damage. So, we bought Tylenol, and he used this medication instead of his usual. But his pain only got worse.

So, this morning, he switched back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is what helped before and is helping again now. In addition, he is using a drug-free Aleve Direct Therapy pad that uses waveform technology. He also uses Icy Hot pain relief cream and a heating pad. These reduce his pain, but his back continues to hurt since before the holidays.

Our question is, should he use Aleve and ibuprofen instead of the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to help? He has actually used Aleve for a very long time. He just had his blood tested, and the doctor said his liver and kidneys are good. Is there anything more we can do to relieve his osteoarthritic pain? It is hard to see my husband in so much discomfort when he was previously a very active, pain-free man. -- S.F.A.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis in the neck is a common and painful condition, and there are not always good treatment options. In terms of medicine, anti-inflammatory medicines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil and many other brands), can be very helpful for some people. However, taking both doesn’t improve pain relief. It does increase the risk of toxicity, so he should never take two anti-inflammatory medicines -- choose just one. Tylenol helps some people, but in my experience, most people do better with anti-inflammatories instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does have a smaller risk of side effects. In addition to liver and kidney problems, Aleve and similar medicines can cause stomach problems, ranging from mild upset to life-threatening ulcers; though, this is uncommon with over-thecounter doses. I often recommend a trial of Tylenol to see if it is as good as the anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not for your husband, he should tell his doctor this, and it seems reasonable for him to go back to taking Aleve alone. However, I can’t tell you to disregard his physician’s advice. Some people benefit from Tylenol on top of Aleve.

Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve Direct Therapy pad uses electricity to relieve pain without medicine. It’s fine to combine this therapy with medicines. Creams -- whether they are antiinflammatory, menthol and camphor, or topical anesthetics -provide some relief, but they tend to be better on the hands, wrists and knees than the neck. Though, they still may be worth trying in combination with medicines.

In more severe cases, injections can be used before considering surgery.

Kitty Jospe Shares Her Poetic Words of Wisdom

For Rochester’s Kitty Jospe, creative writing and poetry writing specifically has been a staple throughout her life, even as early as Christmas letters and celebrations as a child. She also reminisces about when she was around six years old and asked her mother on a rainy vacation day, “What can I/we do?” and her mother assigned Jospe’s older sister to write a story about “Millicent Moo” and Kitty to write about “Timothy Chipmunk.” Working with words has always been part of her life, she says.

She says that what she learned about poetry she learned best in a French poetry class as she pursued her MA in French Literature, and then when she taught French poets in AP French Literature for ten years.

A er a few workshops with poet greats, Tom Lux, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Alberto Rios, and then a er retiring from teaching, Jospe pursued her MFA, studies she says “opened my eyes to all Poetry could do.” During that program, she formed a reading appreciation circle to read aloud and discuss National Poet Laureates to identify each poet’s “secret ingredient,” what made the poet stand out, the same question she says she considered for 25 years as a trained docent at Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery.

Training herself to mindfully examine art and poetry extends to the natural world, Jospe explains. “Such mindfulness and curiosity is the stuff of poetry. Equally important is to experiment with possibilities, explore unusual images and juxtapositions, and embrace paradox. e trick is to know all the possibilities of the cra to render it so a reader is totally reeled in.”

In her writing, Jospe is “very mindful of form,” experimenting, letting each poem tell her what form and style it needs. Finding inspiration “everywhere,” whether in a conversation with a friend, adventures in the natural world, or even visual patterns and striking imagery around her, Jospe says she prefers lyric poetry, challenging herself to write well about something in a creative, unique way.

Jospe ritualistically rises early and writes every day. en at the end of the month, she goes through the writings and revises and submits what interests her. She values recognition of individual poems by the time she publishes them as a collection.

Most important to Jospe in her creative writing is connection, “bringing joy to people and helping them see how they can contribute to positive energy. is is the gi of art. It brings out the best in us.”

Jospe explains, “Creative writing invites us to join the universals and big picture of life. It allows us to leave media, society, [and] personal concerns temporarily so that we connect on a greater spiritual level to something we each have inside that prods our curiosity and compassion.”

To budding writers, Jospe says, “Read. Read! Read! Write. Write no matter what. Set aside time to pen your thoughts as a regular practice even if you don’t think you have anything to write about. Re-read a week later what you’ve written and revise. en find friends and share, ask their opinion. Be ready to keep revising. Read how other people have dealt with what you’re thinking about. Google different ways to understand a theme.”

4-H Honeoye Robotics Club Competes in Two FIRST Robotics Competitions

When you are looking to identify future innovators, look no further than our very own town of Honeoye. e Honeoye Robotics 4-H Club is a group of young people ages 13-19 who build robots for competition. is year, they competed with their robot in two FIRST robotics competitions.

Mike Shaughnessy leads the Honeoye team along with other engineering mentors Richard Langkamp, Eric Fiegl, and Keith Richardson, guiding youth in designing, building, and programming a functioning competition robot. rough the project, youth not only learned important science and engineering skills, but also persistence, problem solving, and teamwork.

A global organization, FIRST robotics stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Each year, FIRST gives teams a different challenge. Teams must build robots to complete a given task within specifications FIRST presents. is year, the competition, entitled Crescendo, required robots to place “notes” in designated “speakers” around the course. To finish the match, robots must also climb onto a “stage.”

e Honeoye 4-H team goes by the name of SUITS, which stands for Students Utilizing Ingenuity, Technology, and Science. eir first competition for 2024 was held at RIT the weekend of March 16th. At this competition, the SUITS placed 31st out of 54 teams. e robot fought them all the way, and they had to frequently return to the pit to repair mechanical issues. Under the leadership of their mentors, the youth worked hard to keep their robot going throughout the competition and never gave up. Upon elimination from the RIT competition, the team returned to the shop to continue working on the robot for several hours.

eir second competition was at the NY Tech Valley Regional in Albany the weekend of March 23rd. Plagued with mechanical problems yet again, the team worked hard in the pits trying to improve the robot. ough they finished 49th out 52 teams, their hard work in the pits and the team’s determination and drive resulted in the SUITS’ last three matches being their best, a testament to hard work improving the performance.

e youth learned important engineering (and life!) concepts

for their persistence and problem solving through a difficult season, and a big thank you to their adult mentors for guiding them every step of the way. e following youth club members attended the competitions this year: Daniel Richardson, Chloe Brunk, Chelsie Odenbach, Zachary Struble, Lily Temple, Lucas Mastin, Hunter Manciocchi, Jason Zanche, Cassandra Zanche, and Nicholas Connor.

Everyone at the competitions is very positive towards each other and they are willing to help teams they’re up against. At both competitions I went to this year, I learned a lot about why wiring neatly is important and the struggles of having a double-jointed arm. Also cheering at the competitions is very fun because you can be as loud as you want.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a small mutt from the local shelter and named her “Moxie.” She’s adorable but really energetic. She’ll actually jump straight up in the air as high as my waist! She also tugs hard at the leash when we walk. How do I tame all of this energy? -- Janice F., Hyde Park, New York

DEAR JANICE: Congratulations on your new pet! Moxie sounds like a bundle of joy. But I can understand that all her energy can be tiring.

In addition to walks twice a day (or more, if you can swing it), give Moxie plenty of puppy toys to play with at home, and spend time with her on the floor just playing fetch and helping her work off more of that energy.

She may also respond very well to a consistent schedule of walks, feeding and bedtime (yes, bedtime). Build certain predictable routines around each of these events. When it’s time for a walk, call Moxie and have her sit while you put on her leash. During walks, keep the leash short and work on the “heel” command. But when in a safe, open area, give Moxie more room on the leash to explore. When it’s bedtime, create a routine that is the same every night -- one that is positive, with a little play time and a signal to settle down and rest (such as turning down the lights).

Now, if Moxie’s energetic behavior is morphing into something more serious, like destroying furniture or being aggressive toward other dogs or humans on walks, that’s a problem you’ll need to address as soon as possible. Talk to Moxie’s vet about ways to reduce her hyperactivity and anxiety (if those are the causes). If she isn’t responding to basic behavioral training, hire a trainer to help.

After attending a weekend celebration I have to ask: Why does the band or music have to be so loud? Even when sitting the furthest away you have to turn your ear within a foot to hear someone talk, that’s ridiculous! Then everyone around has to raise their volume. While some of us may have missed out on a clear view of the eclipse, warmth reigned even as the temperature dropped, as we shared and connected with others. So many people spent time with friends and family that traveled for the unique event. Many small towns hosted gatherings for community members to make memories with families, friends, and no-longer-strangers. Thank you to those who hosted events for such amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories! Because – even though it may have been cloudy, the people around you made it feel warm and sunny!

I don’t think young people belong in management positions. There’s so many reasons for this. For one, they walk in without any experience and not truly prepared for what needs to be done. Everyone knows with age comes wisdom. They’re just not comprehending how to run a place properly, or listen to concerns and then sometimes they don’t really know what to do about it. Sometimes it’s just laziness. Some sit around and do nothing. Walk around, looking around, flirting. Please choose better or pay attention to what’s going on.
