Constant Aleve and Ibuprofen Consumption Can Cause Damage
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, age 70, had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his neck, for which he would take Aleve to relieve his discomfort when needed. Just before Christmas last year, his back began hurting so much that he went to his doctor, who said to get up and move more. (We have always exercised and remained active in life, but he did slow down due to his pain.)
My husband then added ibuprofen to the Aleve he was already using. His doctor said that the pain is due to osteoarthritis in his mid-back area. Apparently, there is nothing to do for it but take Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose. Ibuprofen or Aleve isn’t recommended because it causes liver and kidney damage. So, we bought Tylenol, and he used this medication instead of his usual. But his pain only got worse.
So, this morning, he switched back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is what helped before and is helping again now. In addition, he is using a drug-free Aleve Direct Therapy pad that uses waveform technology. He also uses Icy Hot pain relief cream and a heating pad. These reduce his pain, but his back continues to hurt since before the holidays.
Our question is, should he use Aleve and ibuprofen instead of the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to help? He has actually used Aleve for a very long time. He just had his blood tested, and the doctor said his liver and kidneys are good. Is there anything more we can do to relieve his osteoarthritic pain? It is hard to see my husband in so much discomfort when he was previously a very active, pain-free man. -- S.F.A.
ANSWER: Osteoarthritis in the neck is a common and painful condition, and there are not always good treatment options. In terms of medicine, anti-inflammatory medicines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil and many other brands), can be very helpful for some people. However, taking both doesn’t improve pain relief. It does increase the risk of toxicity, so he should never take two anti-inflammatory medicines -- choose just one. Tylenol helps some people, but in my experience, most people do better with anti-inflammatories instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does have a smaller risk of side effects. In addition to liver and kidney problems, Aleve and similar medicines can cause stomach problems, ranging from mild upset to life-threatening ulcers; though, this is uncommon with over-thecounter doses. I often recommend a trial of Tylenol to see if it is as good as the anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not for your husband, he should tell his doctor this, and it seems reasonable for him to go back to taking Aleve alone. However, I can’t tell you to disregard his physician’s advice. Some people benefit from Tylenol on top of Aleve.
Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve Direct Therapy pad uses electricity to relieve pain without medicine. It’s fine to combine this therapy with medicines. Creams -- whether they are antiinflammatory, menthol and camphor, or topical anesthetics -provide some relief, but they tend to be better on the hands, wrists and knees than the neck. Though, they still may be worth trying in combination with medicines.
In more severe cases, injections can be used before considering surgery.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES
Select a reliable carpet retailer and installer for your business. Competent installers will lay the carpeting in the correct manner so that it will look beautiful and maintain its durability for the life of the product. Shop around to find the right installer or even do the work yourself if you feel capable.
The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage.
Songbirdsalsowilladdcharactertoayard.TheAudubonSocietysuggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
CURTAINS: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly.

GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS
Makes 10 to 12 skewers
Basting Sauce (optional)
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup mirin
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces
1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths
1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil
Salt (optional)
Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high.
If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl.
Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil.
The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and bastingwithadditionalsauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill.
Serve the skewers piping hot.

* On April 18, 1989, thousands of Chinese students continue to take to the streets in Beijing to protest government policies and issue a call for greater democracy, resulting in the Tiananmen Square Massacre and thousands of protestors dead. Fear that a severe U.S. reaction to the massacre might result in a diplomatic rupture limited the official U.S. response.

e activities proposed are Categorically Excluded under HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58 from National Environmental Policy Act requirements.
is is the first tier of review in a 2-tiered process. e specific addresses of homes are not known at this time because the participating property owner identification process is ongoing. erefore, under 24 CFR Part 58.15 (Tiering) and 24 CFR Part 58.32 (Project Aggregation), HCR will use a tiered approach and Tier 2 site specific reviews will be completed for those laws and authorities not addressed in the Tier 1 broad review for each address under this program when addresses become known. No physical work will begin on properties until all levels of environmental review are complete and found to be in compliance. Tier 1 review addresses specific environmental factors for which compliance has been documented, regardless of specific site locations. It prevents repeating the same compliance factors on a Tier 2 site-specific basis, once all participating homeowners are known.
An Environmental Review Record (ERR) that documents the environmental determinations for this project can be obtained by accessing https://hcr.ny.gov/hcr-environmental-review.
Tier 2 Site Specific Review: e site specific reviews will cover all the laws and authorities not resolved in the broad Tier 1 review as discussed in the ERR that is available for public inspection.

PUBLIC COMMENTS
Any individual, group, or agency may submit written comments on the ERR to Cody Sargood, either by mail to Environmental Analysis Unit, NYS Housing Trust Fund Corporation, 38-40 State Street, Albany, New York, 12207 or by Email to environmental.comments@hcr.ny.gov. All comments received by April 19, 2024, will be considered by HCR prior to authorizing submission of a request for release of funds. Comments should specify which part of this Notice they are addressing.
ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION
HCR certifies to HUD that Cody Sargood, in his capacity as Certifying Officer consents to accept the jurisdiction of the Federal Courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to the environmental review process and that these responsibilities have been satisfied. HCR’s approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under NEPA and related laws and authorities, and allows Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation Inc. to use Program funds.
OBJECTIONS TO RELEASE OF FUNDS
HUD will accept objections to its release of funds and HCR’s certification received by May 7, 2024 or for a period of fifteen days following its actual receipt of the request (whichever is later) only if they are on one of the following bases:
(a) the certification was not executed by the Certifying Officer of HCR; (b) HCR has omitted a step or failed to make a decision or finding required by HUD regulations at 24 CFR Part 58; (c) the grant recipient or other participants in the project have committed funds, incurred costs, or undertaken activities not authorized by 24 CFR Part 58 before approval of a release of funds by HUD; or (d) another Federal agency acting pursuant to 40 CFR Part 1504 has submitted a written finding that the project is unsatisfactory from the standpoint of environmental quality. Objections must be prepared and submitted in accordance with the required procedures (24 CFR Part 58, Sec. 58.76) and shall be addressed and sent via email to CPDRROFNYC@hud.gov
Potential objectors should contact HUD to verify the actual last day of the objection period.

HOW RISING FOOD DEMAND IS AFFECTING FARMING
Climate change: Climate change is predicted to cause issues to crop yields, especially in portions of the world where the population is growing the fastest. For example, a recent NASA study published in the journal Nature predicts that high greenhouse gas emissions may cause corn output to decline as early as 2030, but wheat output would increase. Farmers may need to roll with the punches and shift operations to cope with the environmental changes.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN
Change your reading habits. E-reader enthusiasts may have access to millions of books at their fingertips, but that access could come at a steep cost. Distractions abound when reading books on tablets, smartphones and e-readers. The internet is only a swipe or two away when reading e-books, while print books provide no such access to the internet.Tablets and e-readers employ the he same notification system as smartphones, so readers who insist on going the digital route can turn those notifications off before cuddling up with a good book. But that might not be enough, as readers can still visit the home screen of their devices and begin browsing the internet. Print books are ideal for those who want to read with as little device-related distractions as possible.

Lessons in Problem Solving and Perseverance:
4-H Honeoye Robotics Club Competes in Two FIRST Robotics Competitions
BY SARAH BAGLEY WILHELM, ONTARIO COUNTY 4 H EDUCATOR
When you are looking to identify future innovators, look no further than our very own town of Honeoye. e Honeoye Robotics 4-H Club is a group of young people ages 13-19 who build robots for competition. is year, they competed with their robot in two FIRST robotics competitions.
Mike Shaughnessy leads the Honeoye team along with other engineering mentors Richard Langkamp, Eric Fiegl, and Keith Richardson, guiding youth in designing, building, and programming a functioning competition robot. rough the project, youth not only learned important science and engineering skills, but also persistence, problem solving, and teamwork.
A global organization, FIRST robotics stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Each year, FIRST gives teams a different challenge. Teams must build robots to complete a given task within specifications FIRST presents. is year, the competition, entitled Crescendo, required robots to place “notes” in designated “speakers” around the course. To finish the match, robots must also climb onto a “stage.”
e Honeoye 4-H team goes by the name of SUITS, which stands for Students Utilizing Ingenuity, Technology, and Science. eir first competition for 2024 was held at RIT the weekend of March 16th. At this competition, the SUITS placed 31st out of 54 teams. e robot fought them all the way, and they had to frequently return to the pit to repair mechanical issues. Under the leadership of their mentors, the youth worked hard to keep their robot going throughout the competition and never gave up. Upon elimination from the RIT competition, the team returned to the shop to continue working on the robot for several hours.
eir second competition was at the NY Tech Valley Regional in Albany the weekend of March 23rd. Plagued with mechanical problems yet again, the team worked hard in the pits trying to improve the robot. ough they finished 49th out 52 teams, their hard work in the pits and the team’s determination and drive resulted in the SUITS’ last three matches being their best, a testament to hard work improving the performance.
e youth learned important engineering (and life!) concepts
for their persistence and problem solving through a difficult season, and a big thank you to their adult mentors for guiding them every step of the way. e following youth club members attended the competitions this year: Daniel Richardson, Chloe Brunk, Chelsie Odenbach, Zachary Struble, Lily Temple, Lucas Mastin, Hunter Manciocchi, Jason Zanche, Cassandra Zanche, and Nicholas Connor.
Odenbachsays,“ erearesomanyfunthingsaboutrobotics, but one of my favorites is that community at the competitions and the learning experience. Everyone at the competitions is very positive towards each other and they are willing to help teams they’re up against. At both competitions I went to this year, I learned a lot about why wiring neatly is important and the struggles of having a double-jointed arm. Also cheering at the competitions is very fun because you can be as loud as you want.”

POISON PREVENTION TIPS
Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safety protocols that can save lives.
Retail credit cards: Many retailers offer their own credit cards. Consumers may be enticed to sign up for such cards by the opportunity for instant, and often significant, savings. For example, a home improvement store may offer an immediate 25 percent discount to customers who sign up for a store credit card and use the card to make a purchase. As enticing as such savings can be, consumers should recognize that a recent study by CreditCards.com found that the average retail credit card APR is 25.9 percent. That’s more than 6 percent higher than a general purpose credit card. Consumers who cannot pay balances in full each month could end up paying much more in interest if they use retail credit cards instead of general purpose cards.

THE ROAD
ALONG
VENT BRIGHTER
Grateful to Alert Driver
Excess Noise
Saturday, April 6th just before noon on 15A in Rush, a child ran into the road right in front of my vehicle. There was no other option than to slam on my brakes. The driver following me in a black SUV quickly veered into the other lane, avoiding striking my vehicle, which surely would have been catastrophic for the child as it would have propelled me forward and into the child’s path. I am extremely grateful for the driver’s alertness and defensive actions and wish to express a very sincere THANK YOU. From the Red Honda CRV
After attending a weekend celebration I have to ask: Why does the band or music have to be so loud? Even when sitting the furthest away you have to turn your ear within a foot to hear someone talk, that’s ridiculous! Then everyone around has to raise their volume. To come home with ringing in your ears and a sore throat ruins the fun.
Young People in Management
Eclipse brings “sunshine”
While some of us may have missed out on a clear view of the eclipse, warmth reigned even as the temperature dropped, as we shared and connected with others. So many people spent time with friends and family that traveled for the unique event. Many small towns hosted gatherings for community members to make memories with families, friends, and no-longer-strangers. Thank you to those who hosted events for such amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories! Because – even though it may have been cloudy, the people around you made it feel warm and sunny!
I don’t think young people belong in management positions. There’s so many reasons for this. For one, they walk in without any experience and not truly prepared for what needs to be done. Everyone knows with age comes wisdom. They’re just not comprehending how to run a place properly, or listen to concerns and then sometimes they don’t really know what to do about it. Sometimes it’s just laziness. Some sit around and do nothing. Walk around, looking around, flirting. Please choose better or pay attention to what’s going on.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Con apartamento espaciosos, cable e internet listos, electrodomésticos y ventanas de bajo consumo, cocinas completamente equipadas, armarios espaciosos, instalaciones de lavandería, estacionamiento fuera de la calle y cerca de tiendas.
Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers says that fatal and nonfatal poisonings overwhelmingly occur among adults. This is largely attributed to the opioid epidemic in the United States and overdoses linked to prescription medications. The National Safety Council says more than 90 percent of nonfatal poisonings and 99 percent of fatalities attributed to poisonings occur in adults older than 19.The NSC says that, in 2019, the most recent year for data, there were 65,773 preventable poisoning deaths in the United States.

Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The CanadianNurses’Association, formerlytheCanadianNationalAssociation of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
