“When you enter a grove peopled with ancient trees, higher than the ordinary, and shutting out the sky with their thickly inter-twined branches, do not the stately shadows of the wood, the stillness of the place, and the awful gloom of this doomed cavern then strike you with the presence of a deity?” - Seneca

GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES
Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

Whitney Houston - With a big voice and personality, Houston was incredibly popular during the 1980s and 1990s. While she is known for many chart-topping hits, her fame reached a new level when she covered Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” for the movie “The Bodyguard,” in which she also starred. Houston’s version bridged the gap between country and R&B/pop.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET
BATHROOMS: Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of winter weather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in which it’s too cold to open bathroom windows to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, shower stalls, and floors for any signs of mold growth or grime. Mold growth in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma, so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold growth throughout winter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time.

Kitty Jospe Shares Her Poetic Words of Wisdom
BY SUZIE WELLS
For Rochester’s Kitty Jospe, creative writing and poetry writing specifically has been a staple throughout her life, even as early as Christmas letters and celebrations as a child. She also reminisces about when she was around six years old and asked her mother on a rainy vacation day, “What can I/we do?” and her mother assigned Jospe’s older sister to write a story about “Millicent Moo” and Kitty to write about “Timothy Chipmunk.” Working with words has always been part of her life, she says.
She says that what she learned about poetry she learned best in a French poetry class as she pursued her MA in French Literature, and then when she taught French poets in AP French Literature for ten years.
A er a few workshops with poet greats, Tom Lux, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Alberto Rios, and then a er retiring from teaching, Jospe pursued her MFA, studies she says “opened my eyes to all Poetry could do.” During that program, she formed a reading appreciation circle to read aloud and discuss National Poet Laureates to identify each poet’s “secret ingredient,” what made the poet stand out, the same question she says she considered for 25 years as a trained docent at Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery.
Training herself to mindfully examine art and poetry extends to the natural world, Jospe explains. “Such mindfulness and curiosity is the stuff of poetry. Equally important is to experiment with possibilities, explore unusual images and juxtapositions, and embrace paradox. e trick is to know all the possibilities of the cra to render it so a reader is totally reeled in.”
In her writing, Jospe is “very mindful of form,” experimenting, letting each poem tell her what form and style it needs. Finding inspiration “everywhere,” whether in a conversation with a friend, adventures in the natural world, or even visual patterns and striking imagery around her, Jospe says she prefers lyric poetry, challenging herself to write well about something in a creative, unique way.
Jospe ritualistically rises early and writes every day. en at the end of the month, she goes through the writings and revises and submits what interests her. She values recognition of individual poems by the time she publishes them as a collection.
Most important to Jospe in her creative writing is connection, “bringing joy to people and helping them see how they can contribute to positive energy. is is the gi of art. It brings out the best in us.”
Jospe explains, “Creative writing invites us to join the universals and big picture of life. It allows us to leave media, society, [and] personal concerns temporarily so that we connect on a greater spiritual level to something we each have inside that prods our curiosity and compassion.”
To budding writers, Jospe says, “Read. Read! Read! Write. Write no matter what. Set aside time to pen your thoughts as a regular practice even if you don’t think you have anything to write about. Re-read a week later what you’ve written and revise. en find friends and share, ask their opinion. Be ready to keep revising. Read how other people have dealt with what you’re thinking about. Google different ways to understand a theme.”
Jospe is o en featured at poetry readings and events around Rochester. She recently read from her latest book, Whispers of Perhaps,
Whispers of Perhaps cover photo, capturing what it looks like to be a city in the sky, reflecting the implied perhaps of our human capacity for subjective perception – pareidolia, which imposes meaning
and this May, she will read for the Poetry Trail at the Webster Arboretum. Check out Jospe’s websites for more information on her publications and upcoming readings: kdjospe.blogspot.com, foothillspublishing.org/jospe/ Whispers of Perhaps
“In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.”
Perhaps this proverb brings hope, and perhaps we each have magic and imagine one hand on a staff, one hand on another’s shoulder... See how that woman smiles, how you can’t even guess that old man has a limp, and no one makes wrinkles in the forehead, no eyebrow hinting of worry.
Perhaps some ask, what is best knowing there is no answer. Others ask about the king, hearing both hands are on his stick Some answer, Perhaps it will help him guide. Others implore fate. Others continue to smile. Who knows?
Look at him, that bandage slung over his eye, the other eye staring ahead so intently. Can anyone guess what he sees?
What do we ever know about what another is thinking, seeing, feeling? Tell me, how do you color your perhaps? What whispers do you want it to tell you?
Love to write? You could earn CASH when you share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! It may be featured on our popular website for all to see and even selected for print! Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver.com or email hometown@gvpennysaver.com!

• Change the oil and filter per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and filter changes keep your engine clean on the inside.
• Check the tire pressure monthly, including the spare. Your car’s tires affect its ride, handling, traction and safety.
• Have the alignment checked annually. Potholes and other road conditions, as well as normal wear, can take their toll on your car’s steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fueleconomyandhandling, and increases driving enjoyment and safety.
• Inspect the windshield wipers andlightsonthecar.Lightsand wipers play a major role in safe driving, and they are normal wear items that need periodic replacement.
To help make vehicle ownership more enjoyable, economical and convenient so you can keep your relationship with your car on track, the Car Care Council has a free custom service schedule available on its website.
The Council is also the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

VENT BRIGHTER
Grateful to Alert Driver
Excess Noise
Saturday, April 6th just before noon on 15A in Rush, a child ran into the road right in front of my vehicle. There was no other option than to slam on my brakes. The driver following me in a black SUV quickly veered into the other lane, avoiding striking my vehicle, which surely would have been catastrophic for the child as it would have propelled me forward and into the child’s path. I am extremely grateful for the driver’s alertness and defensive actions and wish to express a very sincere THANK YOU. From the Red Honda CRV
After attending a weekend celebration I have to ask: Why does the band or music have to be so loud? Even when sitting the furthest away you have to turn your ear within a foot to hear someone talk, that’s ridiculous! Then everyone around has to raise their volume. To come home with ringing in your ears and a sore throat ruins the fun.
Young People in Management
Eclipse brings “sunshine”
While some of us may have missed out on a clear view of the eclipse, warmth reigned even as the temperature dropped, as we shared and connected with others. So many people spent time with friends and family that traveled for the unique event. Many small towns hosted gatherings for community members to make memories with families, friends, and no-longer-strangers. Thank you to those who hosted events for such amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories! Because – even though it may have been cloudy, the people around you made it feel warm and sunny!
I don’t think young people belong in management positions. There’s so many reasons for this. For one, they walk in without any experience and not truly prepared for what needs to be done. Everyone knows with age comes wisdom. They’re just not comprehending how to run a place properly, or listen to concerns and then sometimes they don’t really know what to do about it. Sometimes it’s just laziness. Some sit around and do nothing. Walk around, looking around, flirting. Please choose better or pay attention to what’s going on.

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES
Participate in local events: Local events like holiday bazaars and town festivals provide great chances for business owners to communicate directly with new and existing customers. Take advantage of the chance to set up a booth at such events, and make a concerted effort to reach out to consumers who stop by the booth. The customer feedback experts at Apptentive found that 97 percent of consumers are somewhat likely to become more loyal to a company that implements their feedback. Setting up a booth at a bazaar or festival provides a great chance to solicit feedback that businesses can then implement to retain more customers.
DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Constant Aleve and Ibuprofen Consumption Can Cause Damage
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, age 70, had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his neck, for which he would take Aleve to relieve his discomfort when needed. Just before Christmas last year, his back began hurting so much that he went to his doctor, who said to get up and move more. (We have always exercised and remained active in life, but he did slow down due to his pain.)
My husband then added ibuprofen to the Aleve he was already using. His doctor said that the pain is due to osteoarthritis in his mid-back area. Apparently, there is nothing to do for it but take Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose. Ibuprofen or Aleve isn’t recommended because it causes liver and kidney damage. So, we bought Tylenol, and he used this medication instead of his usual. But his pain only got worse.
So, this morning, he switched back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is what helped before and is helping again now. In addition, he is using a drug-free Aleve Direct Therapy pad that uses waveform technology. He also uses Icy Hot pain relief cream and a heating pad. These reduce his pain, but his back continues to hurt since before the holidays.
Our question is, should he use Aleve and ibuprofen instead of the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to help? He has actually used Aleve for a very long time. He just had his blood tested, and the doctor said his liver and kidneys are good. Is there anything more we can do to relieve his osteoarthritic pain? It is hard to see my husband in so much discomfort when he was previously a very active, pain-free man. -- S.F.A.
ANSWER: Osteoarthritis in the neck is a common and painful condition, and there are not always good treatment options. In terms of medicine, anti-inflammatory medicines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil and many other brands), can be very helpful for some people. However, taking both doesn’t improve pain relief. It does increase the risk of toxicity, so he should never take two anti-inflammatory medicines -- choose just one. Tylenol helps some people, but in my experience, most people do better with anti-inflammatories instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does have a smaller risk of side effects. In addition to liver and kidney problems, Aleve and similar medicines can cause stomach problems, ranging from mild upset to life-threatening ulcers; though, this is uncommon with over-thecounter doses. I often recommend a trial of Tylenol to see if it is as good as the anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not for your husband, he should tell his doctor this, and it seems reasonable for him to go back to taking Aleve alone. However, I can’t tell you to disregard his physician’s advice. Some people benefit from Tylenol on top of Aleve.
Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve Direct Therapy pad uses electricity to relieve pain without medicine. It’s fine to combine this therapy with medicines. Creams -- whether they are antiinflammatory, menthol and camphor, or topical anesthetics -provide some relief, but they tend to be better on the hands, wrists and knees than the neck. Though, they still may be worth trying in combination with medicines. In more severe cases, injections can be used before considering surgery.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
Behavioral side effects
Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT
Retail credit cards: Many retailers offer their own credit cards. Consumers may be enticed to sign up for such cards by the opportunity for instant, and often significant, savings. For example, a home improvement store may offer an immediate 25 percent discount to customers who sign up for a store credit card and use the card to make a purchase. As enticing as such savings can be, consumers should recognize that a recent study by CreditCards.com found that the average retail credit card APR is 25.9 percent. That’s more than 6 percent higher than a general purpose credit card. Consumers who cannot pay balances in full each month could end up paying much more in interest if they use retail credit cards instead of general purpose cards.
HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING
Apply lessons learned during the pandemic. A recent Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. government and Eurostat data found that roughly 9.6 million workers in the United States lost their jobs in the first three quarters of 2020. That period coincides with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When forced to confront sudden and unexpected job losses, millions of individuals learned how to get by on less income. Cost-saving measures adopted during the pandemic can be continued or reimplemented, helping individuals to combat higher energy costs and other rising expenses.
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
This
little dog has
a lot of moxie
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a small mutt from the local shelter and named her “Moxie.” She’s adorable but really energetic. She’ll actually jump straight up in the air as high as my waist! She also tugs hard at the leash when we walk. How do I tame all of this energy? -- Janice F., Hyde Park, New York
DEAR JANICE: Congratulations on your new pet! Moxie sounds like a bundle of joy. But I can understand that all her energy can be tiring.
In addition to walks twice a day (or more, if you can swing it), give Moxie plenty of puppy toys to play with at home, and spend time with her on the floor just playing fetch and helping her work off more of that energy.
She may also respond very well to a consistent schedule of walks, feeding and bedtime (yes, bedtime). Build certain predictable routines around each of these events. When it’s time for a walk, call Moxie and have her sit while you put on her leash. During walks, keep the leash short and work on the “heel” command. But when in a safe, open area, give Moxie more room on the leash to explore. When it’s bedtime, create a routine that is the same every night -- one that is positive, with a little play time and a signal to settle down and rest (such as turning down the lights).
Now, if Moxie’s energetic behavior is morphing into something more serious, like destroying furniture or being aggressive toward other dogs or humans on walks, that’s a problem you’ll need to address as soon as possible. Talk to Moxie’s vet about ways to reduce her hyperactivity and anxiety (if those are the causes). If she isn’t responding to basic behavioral training, hire a trainer to help.

Lilies
The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Jane E. (Lynch) Greiten
March 26, 2024
Jane E. (Lynch) Greiten of Honeoye Falls, NY passed away peacefully on March 26th, 2024 at the age of 88. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 65 years, Roger Greiten; her children, Paul Greiten and Karen (Greiten) Kibbey; son-in-law, Aaron; her granddaughters, Gillian and Liah; her sister, Mary (Lynch) Sweeney; nephews, John (Shelly) Sweeney, Tom (Ela) Sweeney, Kevin (Donna) Sweeney, Brian (Heidi) Sweeney; niece, Laurie (Jim) Fish, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Jane was first and foremost a loving and dedicated wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, grandmother and friend who led a long and full life. She was born to Clement and Laura Lynch on March 22, 1936 in Holley, NY. When she was a young child the family moved to Rochester where she graduated from Nazareth Academy in 1954. Always intellectually curious, Jane was proud to be the first person in her family to pursue a degree in higher education. She graduated from Nazareth College in 1958 with a teaching degree and went on to teach Social Studies at John Marshall High School in the city of Rochester. She and Roger were wed at Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Church in Rochester in 1959. ey raised their family first in Mendon and then in Honeoye Falls where she resided for over 50 years. She and Roger delighted in raising and showing Golden Retrievers and she taught dog obedience classes for the Rochester Dog Obedience Club. Jane was an active member of her church community, taught religious education and was instrumental in forming a youth outreach music program at St. Catherine’s Church
General eulogy preparation tips:
* Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service.
* Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening.
* Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments?
* Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander.
* Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself.
* Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again.
* Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
in Mendon. She later joined the St. Paul of the Cross Church Prayer Committee, knitting and distributing numerous prayer shawls for those in need. She made her Crucillo in Elmira, NY, completed the Sunday Celebration in the Absence of a Priest program (SCAP) and was the first person to lead a service at St. Paul of the Cross Church. As a breast cancer survivor, Jane was an early member of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life team where she helped facilitate and participated in annual events for Team Honeoye Falls. Jane was an avid reader, lover of birds, geology, the ocean and anything related to nature. She and Roger enjoyed numerous trips to the coasts of Maine, Massachusetts and North Carolina as well as Alaska, Europe, Ireland, Puerto Rico and many of our esteemed national parks. She also adored the arts and was a season pass holder for years at her beloved Geva eatre.
Family and friends may call on Friday, April 26th between 4 & 7pm at Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls, NY 14472. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 10am at St. Paul of the Cross Roman Catholic Church in Honeoye Falls.
If interested, donations may be made in Jane’s memory to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester at: Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester | Home or the U of R Wilmot Cancer Institute at: Wilmot Cancer Institute - University of Rochester Medical Center, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14642
A special thank you to the loving caregivers at the Avon Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility for your incredibly compassionate care of Jane at the end of her life.

DID YOU KNOW?
In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
