I want all those who have worked tirelessly in the severe weather to restore power, those keeping the roads clear as possible, those Emergency and 1st responders having to risk their lives to help others to know your efforts are not unnoticed. You are very much appreciated. Truly owed a big debt of gratitude. Well done and may you be truly Blessed. Hope after all this a little extra rest. Thank you to the Bloomfield Town Workers who put the snow fence up on Route 444/Victor Holcomb Rd every year. The snow fence makes a huge difference when it is snowing and blowing. Went to breakfast at T’s Family Restaurant in Webster recently. Waiting for waitress to bring our bill, she said do you know that lady who just left in this booth? We did not; she asks if we are sure, yes we do not know her, she told us that she had paid for our breakfast. What a wonderful

Last night my doorbell rang and (to my delight) it wasn’t someone selling roof repair or tree removal service. It was a local Fairport Village Brownie Girl Scout, taking orders for cookies. Instead of placing an order, I made a cash donation on the spot. Later, I discovered a package of (delicious) ‘Thank You’ cookies in my mailbox! What a refreshing and welcome surprise! I did not get the Scout’s name, but I wish I could thank her personally for delivering something more scrumptious than cookies that day! Kudos to The Girl Scouts organization for encouraging the practice, and instilling the value of appreciation in their youngsters.

leave my valuables in plain sight. There’s the old saying: outa sight, outa mind. Leaving something valuable out does tempt unscrupulous people, precisely why my stuff is locked up and out of sight. Sorry it happened to you, but being more careful protects your valuables better.

surprise, have heard that people do this type of thing, but never have experienced it. Thank you so much, and we hope you and your granddaughter had a wonderful day too. We too will pass it on to someone. During the bad weather the last few weeks, I was blessed with caring family, great neighbors and concerned friends. I want to say “Thank You” for ALL you did and for being there. They say you can’t choose anyone to be your relative, friends or neighbors - but I wouldn’t change anyone! Thank You! Kitty Englert West Henrietta

For those who use [local roads] as a pass through, please slow down. The speed limit is 40 MPH, not 50 or above. This is a residential street and not a speed way. Many residents walk, jog and walk their dogs on this road. It is also getting dangerous to even cross the road so we can get our mail. It boils down to inconsiderate motor vehicle operators. There is also a stop sign. This means that you stop and not drive through it. Use common sense. Maybe it is time we have the County Sheriffs sit in our driveways and give you tickets, so you are even later to wherever, you are headed. If you hit someone, they could lose their life. SLOW DOWN and be CONSIDERATE. To the pizza complaint, contact your local BBB bureau and eat elsewhere. To the stolen lawn mower complaint: it’s not elder abuse. Things get stolen from people any age. Bottom line if you don’t want your stuff stolen, lock it up. If you had a garage sale, box things up and lock your mower up. I don’t

To the person who got what looks like chocolate on the Jayne Ann Krentz Book, Illusion Town. I took the book out after you and ended up having to pay your fine for the damage. It would be nice if you would donate $40 to the Public Library. Regarding Vent about Elevator and Weight the person is OLDER. When people get older, they say things like that. If the person is old cut some slack. It also says judge not lest you be judged. You don’t know who will make it and who won’t, so you yourself stop judging. The problem is people get offended at the littlest things. Only you can decide whether to let it roll off your back or make an issue of it. I think there are more important things in this world that deserves to be angry about. I have a weight problem, if someone says something I don’t come down to their level and have to retort back. By letting it go, I forgive. So you need to forgive this person and show some mercy.

D id you k now ? Damage to a law n may be indicative of various problems. Everything from insects to rodents to the family pet may be responsible for causing burnt patches, holes and other eyesores. Getting to the bottom of the problem is the first step in remediation. Burning and discoloration of the law n is often a re sult of high concentrations of dog urine pooling in one area. Diluting the urine by hosing dow n areas of the law n can clear up many problems. Birds, raccoons, skunks, moles, and other rodents may feed on grubs that reside ju st under the thatch of the law n, and animals may tear up law ns in search of this delicacy. Treating the grub problem usually alleviates damage caused by animals. M ole crickets are another common law n destroyer. These insects resemble crickets, but they burrow beneath the turf to feed on plant roots. The mole crickets can pu sh up channels of turf as they burrow, exposing roots to the elements and causing the grass to die. Gettin g rid of the insects canrevitalize the law n.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS

Stinging insects such as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and w asps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should alw ays be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact w ith a stinging insect, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slow ly w alk in one direction until the insect loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elcome oasis for w ild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great w ay to protect pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location w here the bees can be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as w ell as attract pests to the property.

Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. · Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. · Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. · Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners

finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. · Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

NEW HOPE FOR NATURAL TOOTH REPAIR A team of researchers recently discovered that an Alzheimer’s drug has the ability to stimulate the renewal of living stem cells in tooth pulp, thereby paving the way for natural tooth repair. “Dentin,” the primary component of teeth, is the bone-like substance that surrounds the tooth pulp and provides support for the overlying layer of enamel. Researchers found that applying a small amount of the substance called “Tideglusib” (which had been previously used to treat neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease) to a cavity, it promoted the growth of dentin. It is hoped that this natural treatment can be used in the future to reduce the size of the fillings now necessary for large cavities. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is committed to treating patients with respect and honesty. This commitment means that we will respond with

kindness to your concerns and anxieties, talk with you to make sure you understand your treatment options, and ensure that your experience with us is positive and friendly. We have adopted advanced technologies to make your care more effective and more comfortable than has ever been possible. To schedule an appointment, please call (585) 343-4246. Our office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. When the soft pulp (which is at the center of a tooth and contains blood vessels, connective tissue, and large nerves) becomes exposed due to trauma or decay, the body produces a layer of dentin to seal it and protect it from infection.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After being on Paxil for about 15 years, it wasn’t working anymore. My doctor decreased my dose, and I slowly started Viibryd. The first week I felt great. When I increased the dose of Viibryd, I began feeling sick. I had a bad headache, anxiety and couldn’t sleep, and my muscles began jerking. I went to the doctor, and she had me stop immediately, prescribed Deplin for seven days, and said that I’d had serotonin syndrome. When I looked it up, I found it can be fatal if the SSRI is not stopped. I was off all SSRIs for about 10 days but started feeling unconfident and fragile, so I began taking 25 mg of Paxil CR. My doctor seemed concerned that the serotonin syndrome could return, and advised me to take Deplin along with the Paxil. How common is this syndrome? I am weaning myself off the Paxil, but what if I need an antidepressant? -- M.M. ANSWER: Serotonin syndrome is more common than often is suspected. It is an abnormality of brain chemistry caused most often by medications, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like paroxetine (Paxil) and vilazodone (Viibryd). You had many symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome may consist of mood changes such as anxiety and restlessness, but a person may develop confusion and disorientation. Abnormalities of the muscles, such as rigidity and the uncontrollable jerking you mention, are very common. Finally, sweating, high body temperature, vomiting and diarrhea also may be part of the syndrome. Treatment is stopping the medication that caused the symptoms. Many experienced practitioners will use the same or similar medications that caused the serotonin syndrome at a lower dose if it is the only effective treatment, but this requires expertise and careful monitoring. Deplin, a brand of methylfolate, is a B-type vitamin that can make SSRIs work better. It’s not associated with serotonin syndrome, as far as I have been able to find. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A diagnosis of “Cameron erosions of the esophagus” was made after my gastroscopy. I was not able to find that term at nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus. Have you ever heard of this? -- A.M. ANSWER: To be honest, no. However, I did look it up, and found that Cameron erosions are found only in people with a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia isn’t like an umbilical or groin hernia; in a hiatal hernia, the stomach goes upward into the chest through the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen. It is our primary muscle for breathing. There normally is a hole in the diaphragm (the hiatus), but in a hiatal hernia, the structures that hold the stomach in place weaken and allow it to go into the chest. The part of the stomach inside the chest is prone to bleeding, and the areas that bleed can be seen by the endoscope and are called Cameron erosions, or ulcers. Small hiatal hernias usually can be managed with medication as necessary. However, large hernias and those with a history of bleeding may require surgical repair. An expert is needed to decide whether surgery is required. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Olympic Gold medalist Megan Musnicki will be the keynote speaker for the event. Musnicki is a two-time Olympic champion as a member of the women’s eight rowing team in both 2012 and 2016. “The Women of Distinction Event recognizes outstanding women who contribute to their professional and volunteer organizations,” said event committee co-chair Rhonda Vaccaro. “It’s always an inspiring night.” Proceeds from the event support the Professional Women of the Finger Lakes Scholarship program, supporting local women and High School students for nearly fifty years. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and have topped $80,000 in the last ten years. “The adult women learners are really the heart and soul of our work,” said Scholarship Committee Co-chair Amy Morrisey. “These range from women who stayed home to raise their families to those who experienced difficult times in their lives and are not what you would consider traditional students. Supporting these women as they return to school and continue their education is inspiring to see.”

Professional Women of the Finger Lakes have been active in the community since the 1950’s, when they were first founded as the Canandaigua Chapter of Business and Professional Women. The group expanded to include the entire Finger Lakes region and changed their name in 2010. Today’s membership includes over fifty women who are business leaders, volunteers and philanthropists in their communities. Goals of the group include networking, professional development, community involvement, and work-life balance. Events are held monthly and include networking events, professional development seminars, and social events. Membership is open to all women in the Finger Lakes region- regardless of work status. For more information on Professional Women of the Finger Lakes and the scholarship program, please visit their website www.pwflnys.org.

No ‘Mother’ should ‘Outlive’ her ‘Child’, That’s not how things were meant to be… They’re supposed to ‘Grow’ and ‘Marry’ And bring ‘Grandchildren’ to our knees… Some things we just don’t understand, Our ‘Hearts’ have been ‘Ripped Out’… Is it wrong to feel so ‘Angry’, We just want to ‘Scream’ and ‘Shout’… Our throats feel like we’ve swallowed glass, Such a ‘Deep Ache’ always there… Life seems to go on in slow motion But we are just too numb to care… Our mind’s finely tuned to special things, Times we’ve spent together… You’ll always be our Treasured Child’, And stay in our hearts ‘Forever’…

Advice from the Pros: Do Not Neglect Auto Service The average age of a personal vehicle on the road today is more than 11 years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it’s natural to rein in spending. But the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) warn that putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals is false economy. Small issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example, failure to replace worn brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -- both relatively easy services for qualified auto technicians -can result in expensive brake rotor service or costly replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified auto technicians. Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that’s neglected, notes ASE.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.
