PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

People who welcome cats into their homes can expect a companion for a long time, as cats can live up to 20 years or more.

Chet Fery, "The Bread Man" came to St. Mary's in Honeoye to share his bread-time stories, humor, and fresh home baked bread for everyone's pleasure. And the wonderful parishioners of St. Mary's provided a delicious breakfast for participants. What a delightful morning! The message of the Breadman is that the world needs, now more than ever, acts and words of kindness. Thank you Chet Fery and the parishioners of St. Mary's for your kindness and for demonstrating that an act and a word of kindness feeds and inspires another.

Thank you to the volunteers and all who participated in this year's Clarkson Good Neighbor Days. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community!

I changed mine and wished I hadn't because I didn't know that by changing my name I became his property. He told me that I took an oath to love honor and obey; I told him that they don't do that anymore. He called me a liar. I still go by his last name even though I could have changed it after his passing in 2014. After a yard sale this past weekend we put out a bunch of items for free! That didn’t include the table and extension ladder that was taken- nowhere near free items!!! The nerve of some people! Would like you to at least return ladder so work can

There is a scam going on around here mostly on Facebook. He is using my name and my picture. The person is calling asking for money, banking account and etc. This is

what I was told. Please Do Not Listen to him. He is a hacker. I'm an 82 year old widow on Social Security and a small pension. Last year I fell and broke my shoulder bone. I was under Physical Therapy for almost all year, but still didn't regain full use of my arm. I also have back problems from an injury years ago and also have a balance problem and have to be careful bending over. I made repeated phone calls to organizations asking for someone to come in and help me organize my bedroom to make it safer for me to get around but was only able to find one that I have to pay for. Isn't there an organization to help the elderly in circumstances such as mine at no cost or at a special senior price?

for your friendly service and taking the car to AAA location. A big shout out to these two businesses! It makes a better world with people like you! Thank you to Steve Harrison for flying the big Genesee Valley Penny Saver flag at half-staff honoring the late Sen. John McCain.

To The Non-All Star Baseball Parent: A Couple of Points - 1. Stop Always Complaining and Stand Up To The Plate and Be A Coach some time. 2. There are no perfect teams, and life, unfortunately, will never be fair, but a team is a family. Maybe it is your negative complaining attitude that prevented your child from making the team. Coaches do not get paid, and put a lot of dedication into their teams. Constant negative parent pressure doesn’t create a family atmosphere. 3. Think about your actions and how they reflect on your children. 4. Wait until they are older, and all have to try out for a team, but then I guess if they still don’t make it, it will again be someone else’s fault.

Cars lined the lane leading to the new Mercy Flight EMS facility just outside the city limits on Call Parkway in Batavia. Firetrucks and other emergency vehicles were out and open for display. Firemen and emergency responders were available to answer questions and give tours of their vehicles to those interested, young and old alike. A vintage Mercy Flight helicopter greeted visitors with its smiling face as they entered the grounds. Food trucks and Boy Scout Troop 6069 provided food for sale, including such staples as hotdogs and cotton candy. Balloon animals and henna tattoos were some of the fun features available, and a free model plane building workshop just for kids was provided by Home Depot. The goal, of course, was to bring the entire community together. Batavia Outreach Coordinator, Pam Cherry, explained that another of the primary purposes of the event and one reason why personnel and emergency vehicles as well as the new facility were so accessible was to help children become comfortable with emergency and law enforcement personnel as well as their corresponding vehicles. The new building is about bringing all aspects of law enforcement and emergency personnel—local police, state police, fire department, EMS, Mercy Flight—together under one roof.␣␣Now that the building is outside of town, there is also space to work and relax during down time, living spaces, eating spaces, supply areas, office areas. Having enough space creates a better community. Terry Thompson, an AEMT for Mercy Flight/ EMS and a firefighter from the Alabama Fire Department, agreed, adding that moving to this brand-new, state-of-the-art facility has finally given them their own identity. Now, they finally have their own space, the room they need to function, rather than sharing a steadily decreasing space elsewhere. When asked about the concern that the move may increase response times, both Ms. Cherry and Mr. Thompson were adamant that this is

What’s Your Story?

simply not the case. They explained that ambulances will still be stationed throughout the community as they were before the move. Having a central location will, however, better equip personnel to serve not only Batavia but also the rest of Genesee County as well as parts of Erie and Wyoming Counties, as well. This heart to serve the community was further exemplified by the car seat checks offered by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department as well as the rollover demonstration conducted by the New York State Police. The demonstration utilized a device that looked like the front cab of a vehicle. Two cloth dummies, an adult and an infant, were placed in the vehicle first unbuckled, then buckled. A vehicle in a real rollover crash will roll at whatever speed it was traveling, for example, rolling at 55 mph if it was traveling at 55 mph. However, this device could only roll from 10-15 mph. Almost immediately, the child dummy was ejected from the vehicle. The adult dummy continued to be banged around the vehicle with its arms, legs and head emerging from the vehicle at random. In a real crash, they would be striking the ground. What a difference a seatbelt makes! No dummy bodies nor appendages protruded from the vehicle once they were buckled properly. Contrary to what one may think, rollover accidents are not uncommon and may comprise as much as 15% of vehicular accidents, and this demonstration aptly reinforced the need for seatbelt use. All said, the new facilities were beautiful, the law enforcement and emergency personnel were friendly and available to answer questions, and the demonstration was both engaging and poignant. Adults and children were informed and entertained. What a wonderful way for the community to connect with those who serve so selflessly! Your Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss.

By learning about what impacts hearing loss, people can make changes to prevent damage.

• Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Alreadypaired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Keep a rein on that green-eyed monster. Jealousy is counterproductive. Instead of resenting a colleague’s good points, concentrate on developing your own abilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Spending time on a creative project during this high-energy week can pay off both in emotional satisfaction and in impressing someone who is glad to see this side of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Now is a good time to start planning that trip you’ve put off because of the demands on your time. Be sure to choose a destination that is new and exciting. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That upbeat mood in the first part of the week makes you eager to take on new ventures. A more serious note sets in later to help you assess an upcoming decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A high energy level gives the Goat the get-up-and-go to finish outstanding tasks before deadline, leaving time for well-earned fun and games with friends and family. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Dealing with disappointment is never easy. But the wise Aquarian will use it as a vital lesson and be the better for it. A close friend has something important to say. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Best bet is not to get involved in an argument between colleagues until you know more about who started it and why. And even then, appearances could be deceiving. Be alert. BORN THIS WEEK: You have creative gifts that inspire those who get to see this sometimes-hidden side of you. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Try Baking Soda for Underarm Odor --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a leftbreast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. -- D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people. If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another oldfashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based handsanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H. ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy GUM DISEASE AND STROKES Two recent studies found that, although having gum disease significantly raises the risk of stroke, regular dental care may lower that risk. The two studies, which (combined) reviewed the medical records of over 17,000 individuals with gum disease over a period of fifteen years, found periodontal disease to be independently associated with a significantly higher risk of stroke. In light of this sobering finding, it is heartening to note that regular dental exams, cleanings, and treatment were associated with a 23 percent lower risk of stroke. With this in mind, there are very good reasons to see the dentist twice a year and brush and floss teeth at least twice a day at home. Our many years of experience have taught us that prevention is a

key factor in maintaining good oral health as well as overall health. If you are new to the Batavia area and are looking for a family dentist, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL would like to extend a welcome and an invitation to visit our office. We know how difficult it can be to find qualified professionals without reliable references. However, we feel that with our approach and our commitment to excellence, we have something unique to offer at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. U.S. adults between the ages of 50 and 64 experience the highest rates of periodontal disease (11.88 percent).

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.
