HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Eat before and after a workout. Early risers who like to exercise first thing in the morning might develop muscle fatigue if they workout on empty stomachs. The HSS recommends eating a light meal or snack roughly two hours before exercising, and then eating again within one hour of finishing a workout. Doing so provides some energy during a workout and helps muscles broken down during exercise refuel and repair.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Try Baking Soda for Underarm Odor --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a leftbreast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. -- D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people. If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another oldfashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based handsanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H. ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Do your think Colin Kaepernick should be the face of Nike’s “Just Do It” Campaign? The former NFL quarterback, Kaepernick was the one of the first players to take a knee during the playing of the national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice. Kaepernick is one of the faces of a new Nike campaign meant to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the brand’s iconic “Just Do It” motto. The new ad features the message: “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” • Yes • No

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE

w/coupon good through 9/30/18

Pack the right gear While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily. There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors.

Shopping local shops, farms and fairs is a great w ay to enjoy the fresh autumn air w hile supporting local businesses.

Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it’s best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

B ecause

W e C are by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

ONE FINAL KINDNESS Jewish burial tradition calls for mourners to participate in the deceased’s burial by shoveling dirt on the casket. In doing so, the mourners are seen to be performing one final kindness for an individual who requires nothing more of them than the assurance of having his or her body honorably and properly buried. As might be expected, throwing dirt on the grave is more than a symbolic act. While it may be fraught with emotion and pain, this gesture goes a long way to bringing psychological benefit to surviving friends and family. Participating and witnessing the burial commits mourners to undergo one final loving act for their beloved departed and helps mitigate any illusion about the finality of death. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. For more information, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “The reward for attending a funeral is limitless.” ~ Talmud, Sota

Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

Chet Fery, "The Bread Man" came to St. Mary's in Honeoye to share his bread-time stories, humor, and fresh home baked bread for everyone's pleasure. And the wonderful parishioners of St. Mary's provided a delicious breakfast for participants. What a delightful morning! The message of the Breadman is that the world needs, now more than ever, acts and words of kindness. Thank you Chet Fery and the parishioners of St. Mary's for your kindness and for demonstrating that an act and a word of kindness feeds and inspires another.

Thank you to the volunteers and all who participated in this year's Clarkson Good Neighbor Days. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community!

be finished at that location!!! I've been reading whether to change your name after marriage or not. I changed mine and wished I hadn't because I didn't know that by changing my name I became his property. He told me that I took an oath to love honor and obey; I told him that they don't do that anymore. He called me a liar. I still go by his last name even though I could have changed it after his passing in 2014. After a yard sale this past weekend we put out a bunch of items for free! That didn’t include the table and extension ladder that was taken- nowhere near free items!!! The nerve of some people! Would like you to at least return ladder so work can

There is a scam going on around here mostly on Facebook. He is using my name and my picture. The person is calling asking for money, banking account and etc. This is

what I was told. Please Do Not Listen to him. He is a hacker. I'm an 82 year old widow on Social Security and a small pension. Last year I fell and broke my shoulder bone. I was under Physical Therapy for almost all year, but still didn't regain full use of my arm. I also have back problems from an injury years ago and also have a balance problem and have to be careful bending over. I made repeated phone calls to organizations asking for someone to come in and help me organize my bedroom to make it safer for me to get around but was only able to find one that I have to pay for. Isn't there an organization to help the elderly in circumstances such as mine at no cost or at a special senior price?

for your friendly service and taking the car to AAA location. A big shout out to these two businesses! It makes a better world with people like you! Thank you to Steve Harrison for flying the big Genesee Valley Penny Saver flag at half-staff honoring the late Sen. John McCain.

To The Non-All Star Baseball Parent: A Couple of Points - 1. Stop Always Complaining and Stand Up To The Plate and Be A Coach some time. 2. There are no perfect teams, and life, unfortunately, will never be fair, but a team is a family. Maybe it is your negative complaining attitude that prevented your child from making the team. Coaches do not get paid, and put a lot of dedication into their teams. Constant negative parent pressure doesn’t create a family atmosphere. 3. Think about your actions and how they reflect on your children. 4. Wait until they are older, and all have to try out for a team, but then I guess if they still don’t make it, it will again be someone else’s fault.

Supporting the Arts in Dansville By:Amanda Dudek It’s a storefront on Main Street with decorated windows and a sign out front. This only hints at the visual feast within. Paintings, photographs, baskets, pottery, mixed media work and jewelry are among the several different items displayed as Dansville␣ArtWorks␣strives to fulfill its purpose which is “to cultivate and enhance the visual, literary, and performing art opportunities in the greater Dansville Community.” In fact, artists are very local, coming from places such as Wayland, Sparta, Hornell and Geneseo. Artworks’ holds an annual juried photography contest in February, this was the first juried painting contest it has held.␣ Dansville ArtWorks also supports other art forms, especially during Open Mic which takes places on the second Tuesday evening of every month. July’s Open Mic Night featured a Jazz group. August’s Open Mic Night welcomed a poet from Geneseo. September’s Open Mic Night Guest will be Storyteller␣Cris␣Riedel herself, bringing␣old␣folklore from many different cultures to life. Not only are a variety of artforms embraced at␣ArtWorks, but various art and craft classes are taught here, as well.␣␣ Another artist and supporter of the arts, also hails from Dansville, having graduated from Dansville High School in 1975. This artist, Daniel Hogan, was recently recognized by Rochester Mayor, Lovely Warren, with a Mayor’s Choice Award for selling one of his works and using the proceeds to purchase gift cards from local art stores for students at Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School in Rochester. Hogan shared that he was so inspired by two high school students’ desire to turn Wilson into Rochester’s premier school for the arts, that he decided he had to do what he could to support their dream. So, aspiring artists are supported in realizing their vision through the help of other artists who care. How wonderful that this help is coming from␣local communities such as Dansville!␣

Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss.

By learning about what impacts hearing loss, people can make changes to prevent damage.

• Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Alreadypaired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Keep a rein on that green-eyed monster. Jealousy is counterproductive. Instead of resenting a colleague’s good points, concentrate on developing your own abilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Spending time on a creative project during this high-energy week can pay off both in emotional satisfaction and in impressing someone who is glad to see this side of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Now is a good time to start planning that trip you’ve put off because of the demands on your time. Be sure to choose a destination that is new and exciting. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That upbeat mood in the first part of the week makes you eager to take on new ventures. A more serious note sets in later to help you assess an upcoming decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A high energy level gives the Goat the get-up-and-go to finish outstanding tasks before deadline, leaving time for well-earned fun and games with friends and family. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Dealing with disappointment is never easy. But the wise Aquarian will use it as a vital lesson and be the better for it. A close friend has something important to say. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Best bet is not to get involved in an argument between colleagues until you know more about who started it and why. And even then, appearances could be deceiving. Be alert. BORN THIS WEEK: You have creative gifts that inspire those who get to see this sometimes-hidden side of you.
