Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. · Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. · Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. · Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners

finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. · Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel

• On April 23, 1987, the Chrysler Corporation purchases Nuova Automobili F. Lamborghini, the Italy-based maker of high-priced, highperformance cars, for a reported $25 million. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Serotonin Syndrome Affects Mood, Muscles DEAR DR. ROACH: After being on Paxil for about 15 years, it wasn’t working anymore. My doctor decreased my dose, and I slowly started Viibryd. The first week I felt great. When I increased the dose of Viibryd, I began feeling sick. I had a bad headache, anxiety and couldn’t sleep, and my muscles began jerking. I went to the doctor, and she had me stop immediately, prescribed Deplin for seven days, and said that I’d had serotonin syndrome. When I looked it up, I found it can be fatal if the SSRI is not stopped. I was off all SSRIs for about 10 days but started feeling unconfident and fragile, so I began taking 25 mg of Paxil CR. My doctor seemed concerned that the serotonin syndrome could return, and advised me to take Deplin along with the Paxil. How common is this syndrome? I am weaning myself off the Paxil, but what if I need an antidepressant? -- M.M. ANSWER: Serotonin syndrome is more common than often is suspected. It is an abnormality of brain chemistry caused most often by medications, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like paroxetine (Paxil) and vilazodone (Viibryd). You had many symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome may consist of mood changes such as anxiety and restlessness, but a person may develop confusion and disorientation. Abnormalities of the muscles, such as rigidity and the uncontrollable jerking you mention, are very common. Finally, sweating, high body temperature, vomiting and diarrhea also may be part of the syndrome. Treatment is stopping the medication that caused the symptoms. Many experienced practitioners will use the same or similar medications that caused the serotonin syndrome at a lower dose if it is the only effective treatment, but this requires expertise and careful monitoring. Deplin, a brand of methylfolate, is a B-type vitamin that can make SSRIs work better. It’s not associated with serotonin syndrome, as far as I have been able to find. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A diagnosis of “Cameron erosions of the esophagus” was made after my gastroscopy. I was not able to find that term at nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus. Have you ever heard of this? -- A.M. ANSWER: To be honest, no. However, I did look it up, and found that Cameron erosions are found only in people with a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia isn’t like an umbilical or groin hernia; in a hiatal hernia, the stomach goes upward into the chest through the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen. It is our primary muscle for breathing. There normally is a hole in the diaphragm (the hiatus), but in a hiatal hernia, the structures that hold the stomach in place weaken and allow it to go into the chest. The part of the stomach inside the chest is prone to bleeding, and the areas that bleed can be seen by the endoscope and are called Cameron erosions, or ulcers. Small hiatal hernias usually can be managed with medication as necessary. However, large hernias and those with a history of bleeding may require surgical repair. An expert is needed to decide whether surgery is required. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Professional Women of the Finger Lakes Announce Annual Women of Distinction Event By Ellen Martin

Professional Women of the Finger Lakes have announced their annual Women of Distinction event to be held on May 3rd at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua. The event recognizes outstanding women in the categories of Professional Achievement, Entrepreneurial, Volunteer Service, Women Helping Women and Outstanding Youth. Olympic Gold medalist Megan Musnicki will be the keynote speaker for the event. Musnicki is a two-time Olympic champion as a member of the women’s eight rowing team in both 2012 and 2016. “The Women of Distinction Event recognizes outstanding women who contribute to their professional and volunteer organizations,” said event committee co-chair Rhonda Vaccaro. “It’s always an inspiring night.” Proceeds from the event support the Professional Women of the Finger Lakes Scholarship program, supporting local women and High School students for nearly fifty years. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and have topped $80,000 in the last ten years. “The adult women learners are really the heart and soul of our work,” said Scholarship Committee Co-chair Amy Morrisey. “These range from women who stayed home to raise their families to those who experienced difficult times in their lives and are not what you would consider traditional students. Supporting these women as they return to school and continue their education is inspiring to see.”

Hearthside Cats, Inc.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Hi my name is

D.Va and I am 3 months old! I am very spunky and love to be petted. I live with my 3 other siblings which look kind of funny to me (2 cats and a rabbit). I am just learning how to sit and I love playing with the cat toys! I love my family and I am so glad they gave me a furever home. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open. ~John Barrymore

MAKE EASTER EGGS LAST Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

Thank you to a wonderful lady, Connie, and Livonia ambulance crew. I fell and broke my leg while walking my dog. I was sitting in the snow and trying to wave someone down for help, luckily my guardian angel, Connie, came along and called for ambulance, and my friend, to get the dog. A lot of cars had passed; one fellow even waved and tooted his horn! Anyway just wanted to say a BIG thank you to you all and let you know I am continuing to heal. I broke both bones in my leg, so it is a long process, but doing fine! Bless you all! I would like to thank the person who turned in my lost cell phone to the Sheriff’s department, that I lost it in September of last year, while moving my children to their new home. It was powered up and is still in working condition, even though it went through the winter elements. I wish that I knew who you were to

thank you in person, and where it was found. Thank you again. We want to say thanks for a job well done to Norm & Danielle of Norm’s Handyman Service. They gave us a bathroom redo which put our old bathroom to shame. They came to our home & treated us with respect. Their work was stellar. We have already recommended them to our friends. We will be contacting them again for other repairs. Sincerely, MaryLou & Tony I am a Senior Citizen and I want to thank the kind person who found my purse, which I had inadvertently left in the shopping cart on March 1st in Wegmans on Calkins Rd., in Henrietta. You turned it in to the Customer Service Dept. intact. I wish you had left your name etc. so that I could have thanked you personally. Your honestly is sincerely appreciated. J.A. What a wonderful surprise I got when I went to the window to pay for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts in Avon on Friday, March 17th. Thank you so much to the young women in front of me who paid for my beverages! What a wonderful way to start my Friday! I will pay it forward!

At a minimum, schools should let leagues know so we are prepared to pay admission in advance to watch our kids play basketball. Yes, it’s crazy as it sounds.

When a dog comes up to you unaggressive and wagging his tail, there’s no reason to dramatically accuse him of “coming after you” just because of his breed. He could easily attack you in seconds but doesn’t because he’s a sweet dog, so don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. Honestly, it’s disappointing to go to schools and have them charge admission to parents to watch their kids basketball games. All 3 of our kids are in sports and recently we were charged admission at 2 local schools. There is no advance notice on the league website or any type of communication to let parents know that there would be admission costs. The process is not consistent across all schools and for all we know the money collected may not even get transitioned to the school. There are numerous other fun and creative ways that schools can raise money.

Like everyone in this country I’m entitled to my opinion which sometimes comes with criticism. Unlike you I don’t care who you voted for, but if I had to guess you probably didn’t vote. The person I voted for won; if he would have lost my signs would have been removed the day after the election but my plan was to keep them up until after the inauguration. If the signs bothered you so much why didn’t you knock on my door and I would have explained. But you chose to do what a lot of people do, hide. There is no discussion or dialog between people anymore and is why some people believe this country is in trouble. Why is it that a developer who wants to build a supermarket and plaza near a congested intersection, blaming a supermarket 1/2 mile down the road? The town is not really for it, nor are the residents in the area. Adding a traffic light will only add more congestion from the entrances and exits. Poor choice of location, move on.
