Focus on projects with betterthan-average returns that may yield additional savings in other ways. For example, installing new windows will cost $10,000 to $20,000 on average but return 75% to 80% of your investment. And those improvements have the added benefit of making your home more energy-efficient, so you’ll also save on your electricity and heating bills. Plus, you may qualify for tax credits that will further offset the cost of making the changes. For the complete list, go to energystar.gov.

Getting the House Ready to Sell - Kitchen Clutter The kitchen is a good place to start removing clutter, because it is an easy place to start. First, get everything off the counters. Everything. Even the toaster. Put the toaster in a cabinet and take it out when you use it. Find a place where you can store everything in cabinets and drawers. Of course, you may notice that you do not have cabinet space to put everything. Clean them out. The dishes, pots and pans that rarely get used? Put them in a box and put that box in storage.

Make vacations and travel a key component of retirement When the time comes to bid farewell to conference calls, meetings and daily commutes, retirees have open schedules to fill with whichever activities they choose. Travel is one exciting way to pass the time. Traveling can be a rewarding prospect for active seniors, particularly those who successfully preplanned for retirement and have the income to fund various excursions. Many seniors, both in the United States and Canada, find that travel tops their to-do lists once they retire. According to Senior Travel magazine, new travel options are emerging for newly minted retirees looking for something a little different from the status quo. The list of destinations retirees have at their disposal is limitless. The following ideas are some of the more popular ways retirees choose to travel. · Road trips rule. Taking to the highways and byways is an excellent way to see the country. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which places they want to visit. RV travel can be as comfortable or as rustic as travelers prefer. Many seniors spend months traveling in their campers, which offer many of the same amenities of home. Campsites and special RV hook-up sites offer the other necessities of traveling the open road. · Genealogical tourism is popular. People hoping to trace their ancestry and visit their ancestral homelands are one of the fastestgrowing travel segments. Visiting an old church in Europe where ancestors were married or buying food from a market in which a great aunt or uncle once worked leads retirees on many international adventures. adventure-seeking couples may be particularly attracted to exotic travel destinations that are slightly off the beaten path. Travel tours may take vacationers to destinations such as excavation sites or backpacking through the rainforest. With passport in hand, seniors can go just about anywhere their desires take them. · Enjoy a relaxing seaside trip. A seaside vacation can be the perfect trip for seniors who want to put their feet up and sip some cocktails while watching the waves lap the shores. Many beach resorts offer all-inclusive packages for different age groups. Meals, excursions and hotel rooms can be bundled into one affordable, confusion-free price. · Go cruising. Speaking of all-inclusive vacationing, cruising seems tailor-made for those ages 50 and older because it offers the convenience of accommodations, food, entertainment, and transportation all in one. The various activities offered on the ship mean travelers can find ways to spend their time how they see fit. Cruising couples can opt to spend all of their time on the ship enjoying carefully prepared meals and entertainment or disembark and explore the various ports of call along the way. Now that they have more free time, retirees can gear up for travel adventures to remember.

• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

My vacuum died right in the middle of cleaning up after putting up holiday decorations out MidDecember. What a mess, tinsel in the carpet, evergreen pieces, in addition to your normal weekly vacuuming. And what a bad time of year with all those extra expenses during the holiday season. I took my vacuum into a Fairport Vacuum store and dropped it off. I let them know that I couldn’t afford to pick it up till after Christmas because of holiday expenses. They offered me a vacuum loaner (nice customer service). When I did pick up my vacuum later, I realized that the store had also replaced my extension cord at no cost to me and my vacuum ran better that it had in years. It’s was a pleasant surprise to get service nowadays that goes above and beyond expectations. Thank you!
On December 24 our 11 yr. old dog got out without us realizing it. He got frightened and took off and for 19 days was lost. We put up posters, and went door to door hoping someone had seen him, but no luck. Everyone in town knew Scampy was lost and many prayed for his safe return. We had lost hope but on day 19 we got a call that he had been spotted. Our grateful thanks to Patty in West Bloomfield for looking at his face on the posters, and caring enough to stop and call us, and then stomped through the fields and finally got to him. I am sure he would not have lasted much longer. Thanks to everyone who wished for his return, and was on the lookout for him, and especially to Cindy B. and Stephanie T. for their hours of searching, and most of all to Patty for bringing our boy home to us. Every day I drive down Chili Ave. past St. Pius X and I am always inspired by the messages displayed out front. Thank you so much to whoever does this, and yes, I truly missed them when you took a little vacation this past summer.
The staff, at our local hospital, park in the front of the hospital! I had to take my husband in for surgery and had a hard time finding a spot to park. But then I see people in scrubs and dress clothes with their badges parking and walking in the front door. I inquired when I was inside and was told that employees were to be parking at nearby Street and a (FREE) bus would bring them over. And just to inconvenience many of us a little more, the parking in the back is not much better, as employees are doing the same thing. I had to park way out to get to my designated office. It is truly horrible to hear about elder abuse. I have seen the ads on TV. It is not anything I could ever imagine happening. My parents needed my help and that is exactly what I did. I gave up my job to take care of them full time. There was no question in my mind that that was what I was going to do. I did it alone for twelve years.
But what about caregiver abuse? I have been slapped across the face, punched, mentally abused. I understand it is a sickness and they could not help themselves. But it changed me. It made me a very unhappy person. I have been in therapy for over a year. It has helped some, but I have a long way to go. There needs to be more attention brought to this subject. Caregiver abuse does happen. I lived it. I know. Working on becoming me again We have always been taught to have faith in our justice system. That judges will listen to all the facts and findings before making important decisions. What has happened to our county family court where professional opinions do not matter (lawyers, child protective services, councilors, etc.) Even the judges themselves who previously put a court order in place then fail to uphold their order when a violation is found! How can we have faith in our judicial system when our children’s safety and wellbeing are not a consideration in the judgements made…? It is time for a change!

Churchville-Chili Teacher Receives SHAPE America Grant By Amanda Puleo

MAGIC MAZE GRAB BY THE HANDLE
Churchville Elementary School physical education teacher Brooke Elnicky has been coordinating the school’s Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs since she joined the district nine years ago. The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) recently recognized her commitment to physical education and contributions to these American Heart Association (AHA) initiatives with their Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart ( JRFH/ HFH) grant awarding her $2,500 designed to support professional development and provide funds to purchase school equipment. Elnicky plans to use the stipend to purchase heart rate monitors which will be easier for her younger students to use. As part of the grant, she will also be attending the SHAPE America National Conference this March in Boston, Massachusetts. “This is really exciting for me,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to get new ideas, to meet the best of the best in my profession, from all over the country. It will be a reinvigorating experience.” In 2016, Churchville Elementary raised a record $18,456 during their Hoops for Heart event – more than any other elementary school in the state. The program promotes physical education and provides children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke. The funds raised go toward cardiovascular disease and stroke research and health education.
Brooke Elnicky has a passion for helping children develop strong character and life-long healthy habits.
“It’s wonderful to see children develop empathy for others through their involvement in this activity,” Elnicky said. “They are learning to help other people while they are having fun and forming healthy habits.” For 2017, there are already plans to hold a variety of school-wide heart health events as part of American Heart Month. The Society of Health and Physical Educators is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. It is committed to ensuring all children have the opportunity to lead healthy, physically active lives.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Back Surgery Comes With No Guarantees DEAR DR. ROACH: An MRI showed that I have severe stenosis of my C6 vertebrae. I have pins-and-needles sensations that often go down my right arm and in the neck area of my left shoulder. I saw an orthopedic surgeon, who stated that he could “cure” my stenosis with a laminectomy surgery. Based on his recommendation, I have completed a six-day pack of prednisone and four weeks of physical therapy, with little diminishment of my symptoms. I am now taking Celebrex daily. I have spent hours going through the various medical journals online, but could not locate any journal article that summarizes the prognosis of this surgery. Do you know of any research that discusses the post-surgery results, including the degree to which symptoms are reduced and what percent of patients require further surgical interventions? It would be informative to know if there are any other options if PT has provided little benefit. -- J.N.U. ANSWER: As physicians, we like to practice evidence-based medicine, but the sad fact is that evidence to help guide us often is lacking, so we are left with our own education, training and clinical experience to make those decisions. In this situation, we have a few studies to help us. The most-cited one, an analysis of two randomized, controlled trials, showed a faster improvement from surgery, but no difference in symptoms one or three years after surgery in the operation group, compared with the medication and physical therapy group. Several morerecent observational trials have shown significant improvement in pain and movement after surgery. The real problem is that a population doesn’t go to see a doctor about neck pain -- an individual does, and studies that examine population outcomes can’t give precise information about outcomes. Further, these studies don’t even apply to some people. For example, progressive weakness is a clear indication for surgery, and people with that complaint wouldn’t be considered for the trials. You still require an experienced surgeon to give you the best information he or she can about your condition. It stands to reason that the more severe the pain and restrictions on activity, the more likely surgery is to help. Back surgery really should be contemplated only by people with moderate to severe symptoms, and those who recognize that, despite the best care, sometimes surgery does not help and, rarely, can make things worse. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of a number of different things to help acid reflux. Does raising the head of your bed fit into that category, and if so, by how much? -- T.E.D. ANSWER: Yes, raising the head of the bed can reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The traditional method is a brick or two under the head of the bed, but a wedge-shaped pillow works too. Using lots of regular pillows usually does not. When we sleep, any acid that gets passed backward (refluxed) from the stomach into the esophagus stays there for a long time, since neither gravity nor the swallow reflex helps it down. With the head elevated, there is some gravity acting against reflux and getting it back into the stomach. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I need a home Mr. Magoo is a recent intake looking for a retirement home that can care for a senior dog’s medical & physical needs. Although he gets around pretty well currently, as he ages this may become more difficult. He may require medications & assistance with things as he ages. His adopter will need to be understanding that sometimes senior needs are not easy but rewarding beyond measure. He does get along well with other dogs, he will even play with some, but he does also enjoy his space so living with more than 2 dogs is not ideal for him.
