H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Alreadypaired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Keep a rein on that green-eyed monster. Jealousy is counterproductive. Instead of resenting a colleague’s good points, concentrate on developing your own abilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Spending time on a creative project during this high-energy week can pay off both in emotional satisfaction and in impressing someone who is glad to see this side of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Now is a good time to start planning that trip you’ve put off because of the demands on your time. Be sure to choose a destination that is new and exciting. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That upbeat mood in the first part of the week makes you eager to take on new ventures. A more serious note sets in later to help you assess an upcoming decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A high energy level gives the Goat the get-up-and-go to finish outstanding tasks before deadline, leaving time for well-earned fun and games with friends and family. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Dealing with disappointment is never easy. But the wise Aquarian will use it as a vital lesson and be the better for it. A close friend has something important to say. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Best bet is not to get involved in an argument between colleagues until you know more about who started it and why. And even then, appearances could be deceiving. Be alert. BORN THIS WEEK: You have creative gifts that inspire those who get to see this sometimes-hidden side of you. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Try Baking Soda for Underarm Odor --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a leftbreast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. -- D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people. If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another oldfashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based handsanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H. ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss.
By learning about what impacts hearing loss, people can make changes to prevent damage.
• Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Veterans Memorial Park Rededication During Bicentennial By: Amanda Dudek
␣ While the park was created in 1948, its iconic millstone wasn’t added until September 1954 when it was excavated from the Honeoye Creek bed by Rush water pipeline constructors. It was yet another 10 years on Thursday, May 28th, 1964, before the park was finally dedicated, and the millstone received its bronze plaque, which reads in part: “VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK In memory of those who served their country in time of war.” At that time, Congressman Horton presented a Capitolflown flag to the town, commenting as others had on the remarkable initiative of the people of Rush. Although five memorial trees were planted in the park throughout the 1970s, it has now been 54 years since commemorative ceremonies have taken place at Rush Veterans Memorial Park. Tragically, wars have come and gone; other heroes have been added to the ranks of the fallen. We cannot let them go unrecognized. Therefore, on Saturday, September 15th, 2018, the Rush Veterans Memorial Park Rededication will take place at 11am with the unveiling of new War Memorial plaques. New interpretive signage has been installed which includes all veterans who have been born in Rush, drafted or enlisted from

In February 1948, the people of Rush mobilized to create a park to honor their fallen heroes.␣␣The town had already purchased property for the park alongside Honeoye Creek. The property was formerly the location of a mill, owned by Roscoe Tomkinson, which had burned down in September 1941. How apropos that up from the ashes of destruction should rise a memorial to the fallen. The people of Rush immediately sprang into action.␣␣The community members themselves asked that they be permitted to give what they could to the cause directly. A letter was sent out regarding the funds needed. A few notable lines from it read, “With the exception of this letter, there will be no follow-up, personal calls, or special soliciting done for your contribution…that you give is more important than how much you give. We know that every citizen of Rush will want to be part of this most worthy cause.” No contribution, no matter how small, was insignificant or unwanted, for a community-created memorial was more important than grandeur. In April 1948, they succeed.

Veterans Memorial Park Rush or lived in Rush before or after serving. This will include the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama and the Persian Gulf. Certainly, this is a significant addition, and to Norm Miller, member of the Executive Committee of the Legion Post, this is something we should all remember. “We should never forget to those who died to protect our nation’s freedom,” says Miller. “The park is a small reminder and tribute to their sacrifices on our behalf; a gentle reminder to take time out and reflect on the price of freedom and the rights we can take for granted. This park brings us all together in appreciation of the men and women who left the serenity and security of their homes and families to defend us.” This is also a cause that is close to the heart of Keynote Speaker, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, himself a decorated Army veteran and the former Director of the Veterans Outreach Center. The event is free and open to the public. Luncheon tickets are $10. Come out and honor those who gave everything for their families and for us, the generations to follow. For more information, contact Town of Rush Historian Sue Mee at (585) 6247822.␣Lunch tickets can be purchased at the Rush Town Hall, Rush Creekside Inn, Colby’s Ice Cream and Bakery and also online at: ␣http:// rushhistorical.org/product/veterans-memorialpark-re-dedication-luncheon/ .␣Have an inspirational story? Chet Fery, "The Bread Man" came to St. Mary's in Honeoye to share his bread-time stories, humor, and fresh home baked bread for everyone's pleasure. And the wonderful parishioners of St. Mary's provided a delicious breakfast for participants. What a delightful morning! The message of the Breadman is that the world needs, now more than ever, acts and words of kindness. Thank you Chet Fery and the parishioners of St. Mary's for your kindness and for demonstrating that an act and a word of kindness feeds and inspires another.
Thank you to the volunteers and all who participated in this year's Clarkson Good Neighbor Days. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community!

be finished at that location!!! I've been reading whether to change your name after marriage or not. I changed mine and wished I hadn't because I didn't know that by changing my name I became his property. He told me that I took an oath to love honor and obey; I told him that they don't do that anymore. He called me a liar. I still go by his last name even though I could have changed it after his passing in 2014. After a yard sale this past weekend we put out a bunch of items for free! what I was told. Please Do Not Listen to him. He is a hacker. I'm an 82 year old widow on Social Security and a small pension. Last year I fell and broke my shoulder bone. I was under Physical Therapy for almost all year, but still didn't regain full use of my arm. I also have back problems from an injury years ago and also have a balance problem and have to be careful bending over. I made repeated phone calls to organizations asking for someone to come in and help me organize my bedroom to make it safer for me to get around but was only able to find one that I have to pay for. Isn't there an organization to help the elderly in circumstances such as mine at no cost or at a special senior price?

To The Non-All Star Baseball Parent: A Couple of Points - 1. Stop Always Complaining and Stand Up To The Plate and Be A Coach some time. 2. There are no perfect teams, and life, unfortunately, will never be fair, but a team is a family. Maybe it is your negative complaining attitude that prevented your child from making the team. Coaches do not get paid, and put a lot of dedication into their teams. Constant negative parent pressure doesn’t create a family atmosphere. 3. Think about your actions and how they reflect on your children. 4. Wait until they are older, and all have to try out for a team, but then I guess if they still don’t make it, it will again be someone else’s fault.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.
HOME IMPROVEMENT Your Perfect State of Organization (Family Features) Life gets busy and clutter has a w ay of sneaking up on everyone. But, w hether you’re a single person living in an apartment or have a large family in a spraw ling house, everyone can benefit from more organization. By simply thinking about storage differently and coming up w ith a smart organizational system that w orks for you, you’ll be on the w ay to creating a w ell-balanced, happier home. Starting the process If you’re just beginning, remember: baby steps. Focus on one small area or room - or even your junk draw er. Don’t get overw helmed by the big picture. Be sure to finish the project you’ve begun. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and be encouraged to tackle subsequent rooms and projects. Already started Stuck midw ay through an organizational project and need some inspiration to finish? Don’t be afraid to utilize online resources. Thinking of your project as a minimakeover can help make it more exciting and less of a chore. Already organized If your home is already organized, you know that keeping clutter at bay is a full-time job. Be sure to keep a w atchful eye on areas that naturally accumulate clutter, such as entryw ays and child play areas. If you do have children, get them involved in the organization process by teaching them w here items belong and how to store them. By labeling storage bins, baskets or draw ers, your kids w ill alw ays be able to help your home stay organized and clean.

Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo.
