Richard A. Renzoni March 13, 2017 Cohocton: March 13, 2017 at age 62 years. Predeceased by his father Anthony Renzoni. Survived by his wife of 34 years, Naomi Renzoni and children; Emily Renzoni of SC and Zachary (Taylor) Renzoni of Corning, and his dog Bruno. Also survived by his mother Deborah Renzoni and siblings; Jerry Renzoni, Nancy Dennette (Bob Huey), Debbie (Eddie) Paul, Paul Renzoni, and Lisa Aldridge. Several nieces, one nephew, cousins, and friends. Richard was born on September 10, 1954 in Middletown, CT. He spent his childhood between CT and NH, eventually moving to New York State viewing it as an opportunity to provide his family a better future. Rich found work in Greece, NY at Acro Industries where he continued to work until he was no longer able. Rich worked hard every day to make sure his family that he loved so dearly were always provided for; of which, his family will be forever indebted to him. Richard, often known as Dickie or Sunshine and most importantly Dad to those closest to him, was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends alike. The inherited skills from Richard’s father Tony Renzoni gave him the uncanny knowledge base and ability to perform any type of odd job you may come across. Rich enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with anyone willing to listen to him and his opinionated ways. All those he encountered will miss his voice, his laugh, and his opinions more deeply then could be expressed in words. During this time of grief and loss family and friends of Dickie’s will forever cherish the memories we have with him. He was a tough love kind of man who rarely showed how he felt, but, those who loved him knew how much he cared through his actions. Richard would never have hesitated about volunteering to concrete a basement for a neighbor, or in helping a friend to work on their car or plow their driveway so they could get to work. Dickie often did this without asking for favors or anything in return and he always took the time to help the people he cared about in the best way he knew how. Richard will be remembered for many good deeds like this; surely, too many to count. The future ahead will be a lonely one without him and his generosity towards others. We, his family, hope to see all those who are mourning him at the remembrance picnic which will be held in his honor and announced at a later date this spring.

“The best-educated human being is the one who understands most about the life in which he is placed.....” ~ Helen Keller
Education is not limited to formal schooling in classrooms. We are continually being educated by our associations with other people, with nature and by our own realization of the meaning of the things we see around us. Such education leads to a more perfect understanding and the reasons why we are here. Not everyone wants to be educated. Some not only ignore their opportunities to learn but actually resist all chances to gain a better understanding of life..... an understanding that could mean greater satisfaction and happiness. You can call on us to provide advice and comfort as you would expect from your closest friends, in your time of loss. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust.

NAVIGATING LIFE AFTER A LOVED ONE’S DEATH The grieving process, while different for everyone, usually lasts from six to twelve months. During that time, it is likely that those who have lost a loved one will experience a deep sadness and feelings of regret. It is also common to vividly recall memories with the deceased, along with mental images and even the sound of a loved one’s voice. These recollections may trigger emotions such as remorse, guilt, and even anger, which can lead to fatigue and general agitation. Some people respond to loss by withdrawing and becoming irritable. As feelings tend to ebb and flow, grief-stricken individuals come to understand that dealing honestly with loss helps them to accept the reality that they face. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our compassionate staff understands that everyone grieves in their own way. We are here to assist you during your difficult time. We will honor your requests: no detail is too large or too small for us to handle. We are here for you, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities, conveniently located at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Death is not the opposite of life, but part of it.” ~ Haruki Murakami

Adopting a dog or cat later in life Companion animals bring great joy to their owners. The unconditional love cats and dogs provide appeals to people of all ages. While many people associate pets with kids who can’t wait to welcome the first cat or dog into their homes, pets can benefit aging men and women as well. It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, their children move away or they lose a spouse or close friend or friends. The American Humane Society states that studies show pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide muchneeded mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well. Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have anywhere to live. This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt. Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors. When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them. · Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them. · Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are less active and do not need to be walked

or played with as much as dogs. Cats also are small and easily maneuverable, meaning even seniors who have arthritis or other physical limitations can easily care for cats. Many cats are also content to spend long periods of time sleeping on their owners’ laps. · Small dogs that can be active within the house might be a good idea as well, especially for seniors with mobility issues. They’re also easily transported to and from vet appointments. It’s important that seniors carefully weigh the benefits of adopting a pet against any limitations they may have. Having a backup plan for care is advantageous as well. Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel or medical care that requires they be away from home for long periods of time.

Keep battery-operated flashlights and lanterns in easily accessible places in case of pow er failure.
• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Add Little Touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles.

Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

I’ve read about it, heard about it but this happened to us today. Ordered a couple of drinks at the drive thru of McDonalds and some angel in back of us paid for our order. They gave the cashier a card from a local church we have been to, through, to give to us. Thank you for your kindness toward us. It touched my heart when I was losing faith in people. You were used more than you know by the love you showed toward us. I will pay it forward and do the same as you did. Thank you to the truck behind me in the Tim Horton’s drive through on West Main on Tuesday, February 22. We were all waiting so long to move forward. When I got to the window the worker told me the truck behind me paid for my purchase. Made my day to see there is still that goodness in the world. Thank you. I would like to sincerely
thank my family, all of my many friends, classmates of 1957, and my Methodist Church family, Pastor Jerry Kolber, Pastor Denise McKenzie, and Pastor Tim Hamlin for their many acts of kindness shown to me after my open heart surgery. It was very much appreciated. Sincerely, Mary Ellen Willsey I would like to thank Matt Griffo, Deputy Sheriff Jeff Szczesniak and Jimmy from Harris Service Station for helping me out when my car had a transmission cable mishap on Ward Place. I am truly grateful for Matt’s concern when he happened by and helped me with the dilemma I was in and for Deputy Szczesniak for calling Jimmy to sort out the problem and watching out for traffic. I am forever grateful. Donna B. My husband and I want to give a very special thank you to Charles Webb, the Internet Manager and Sales Consultant at Farnsworth Chevrolet in Canandaigua. Charlie took time with us to make sure we found the perfect car. He is a fantastic salesman and a really great guy. Farnsworth Chevrolet is very lucky to have Charlie on their team! R & L McGovern

The State Law: Must yield to pedestrians within the crosswalk does not mean “It is ok to walk in front of a vehicle anywhere.” We live in upstate NY. Ever hear of black ice? If a vehicle slides into or even hits you because the driver does not see you walking into traffic between parked cars, YOU will be the one to suffer the pain of being hit, or even worse. The driver may or may not be responsible, but will feel responsible for your carelessness. Is that text you are reading or writing while crossing in front of a vehicle as important as your life? Crosswalks have been provided for your safety. While it may not be convenient for you to walk in one, crosswalks and the law that governs them are for your safety. Shouldn’t you be teaching your children the law and to find a crosswalk?
Why hasn’t a certain private school in [local town] had an
First, to anyone who orders anything at a restaurant or take out; if you use the word EXTRA you should plan on paying EXTRA. Do you go to Tops and take an extra jar of sauce and not expect to pay? Secondly, I don’t know how it’s possible for wings to be dry AND undercooked. Undercooked wings would be soft and rubbery. Something definitely does not add up here. I would guess that it is a mutual relief to both you and the proprietor that you will not be going back.
To the driver in the black SUV who stopped OVER 400 yards short of the train crossing, would you please move into the shoulder of the road so others can stop closer. You stopped a ridiculous distance away, which put others in line close to a quarter mile from the crossing. No, I’m not exaggerating. Then you speed away, wasting gas to cover up your obvious phobia.

BEE SAFE W HILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS Stinging insec ts suc h as bees and w asps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. How ever, a multitude of fac tors, inc luding the lac k of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pestic ide usage, have threatened pollinator health in rec ent years. As a result, many people have realized the importanc e of protec ting pollinators and even developed gardens geared tow ard providing safe sourc es of nec tar and pollen. The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w ants to remind homeow ners that w hile c reating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely benefic ial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insec ts c an pose signific ant health and safety risks. In fac t, stinging insec ts send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year. People w ith know n allergies to insec t stings or w ith asthma should be espec ially c areful around pollinators, as stings c ould trigger a potentially life-threatening reac tion. There is also a c ommon myth that bees and w asps c an only sting onc e before they die. This only holds true for some spec ies of stinging insec ts, and people should alw ays be c autious around hives and nests. If a person c omes in c lose c ontac t w ith a stinging insec t, sw atting at it w ill often provoke it to bec ome more aggressive. The best c ourse of ac tion is to remain c alm and slow ly w alk in one direc tion until the insec t loses interest. M aintaining a garden that serves as a w elc ome oasis for w ild bees or c ommunity bees that are being raised by loc al professionals is a great w ay to protec t pollinators. W ithout proper beekeeping training, how ever, homeow ners should never allow stinging insec ts to take up residence on their property. If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be c ontac ted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe loc ation w here the bees c an be allow ed to thrive w ithout posing any dangers to the public . If the hive is loc ated in a building, utilizing a professional is also c ritic ally important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover c ombs c ould c ontain honey that c an ferment and c ause serious damage, as w ell as attrac t pests to the property.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS OF WATER Dehydration is a dangerous condition that can cause a host of complications and even prove fatal in severe cases. But as dangerous as dehydration can be, many cases are entirely preventable. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink enough water. When the body does not take in as much water as it puts out, it can become dehydrated. People who live in warm climates or in elevated altitudes may lose more water than those who do not. In addition, water loss is accelerated during strenuous exercise, highlighting the emphasis men and women must place on drinking enough water during their workouts. Water helps the body in myriad ways, many of which might surprise people unaware of just how valuable water can be to the body.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 77-year-old man in good health except for irritable bowel syndrome for 35 years. Six months ago, I started taking two low-dose aspirins daily as a preventive, and since then all IBS symptoms have disappeared. Stools and frequency are now normal and without any intense cramping, gas or urgency, which I had for all those years. Frankly, I’m pleasantly shocked, since I thought IBS had no cure. I take no other medications or supplements, so it seems likely that the aspirin has alleviated or maybe cured my IBS. I thought other readers might be interested. Any thoughts? -- B.C. ANSWER: Yours is a very unusual but not unheard of response to aspirin. Most people with IBS find that aspirin and other antiinflammatories worsen IBS symptoms. I have read of others who have the same response you seem to, however. Aspirin remains controversial as a preventive in people without heart disease, but I believe the benefits outweigh the risks in people at high risk for heart disease, even if they are undiagnosed. Always speak with your doctor before beginning a course of aspirin, even if it’s low-dose. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken the same dosage of Synthroid for several years. Since this dose successfully maintains my thyroid level, is it still necessary for me to have my bloodwork done once a year, or could I either stop having bloodwork done or have the test performed every other year? -- R.M. ANSWER: In general, the dose of replacement thyroid remains roughly constant over the long term. However, the dose may need to be adjusted for several reasons, including weight change, other medication use, change in absorption due to gastrointestinal developments or pregnancy. Also, even normal aging alters the metabolism of thyroid hormone, so I’d recommend continuing to check levels once yearly at a minimum. The booklet on thyroid disorders provides insight into the various forms and treatment of this disease. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Several weeks ago, I contracted a bad cold with much congestion. I have received an antibiotic plus nasal spray, and most of the congestion is gone. I have no pain. My concern is that my ears are still partially blocked. I can clear them by pinching my nose and blowing, such as one does in an aircraft, but I must do this frequently. I am worried about hearing damage. I don’t know what else to do. -- R.F. ANSWER: The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear with the back of the throat and equalizes the pressure in your ear. It is common for congestion to linger. Fortunately, it does not permanently damage hearing, and usually goes away by itself. Decongestants can help, but do not use a decongestant spray such as Afrin (oxymetazoline) for more than three days. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Norma Alsdorf Celebrates Milestone Birthday!
GARYS DOOR COMPANY for garage doors and openers. Parts, Service, Sales and installations. Commercial, Residential, Automatic. FREE ESTIMATES. 585-226-8995. Insured.
By Allison Case
The celebration was in full swing on Friday, March 3 at Grande’Vie Senior Living community. What kind of celebration? Residents and staff alike gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of resident Norma Alsdorf! Adorned with decorations and flowers, the Caring House, Grande’Vie’s memory care unit, was the setting for the celebration as over 35 residents and staff surprised Alsdorf with a party to help her ring in her 100th year. Alsdorf, who has been a part of the community for over two years, found herself surrounded by family and friends as she was showered with gifts and a delicious cake. The former Palmyra teacher has made an incredible impact on the other residents and staff during her time at Grande’Vie. “She was very excited about turning 100 years young,” Activities Director Theresa Emler said. “Norma was so touched with her surprise party and very grateful to the staff that gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers and personal gifts from the residents.” Some of those gifts included a new set of comfortable pajamas, hand and body lotions and a stuffed animal. For the staff, they couldn’t be happier to be celebrating such a kind-hearted person. “Norma is an absolute sweetheart and is always concerned about others before herself,” Caring House Coordinator Monica Costanzo said.
PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: Norma Alsdorf admires her cake while celebrating her 100th birthday
“Norma is the most kind and caring person,” Emler added. Norma’s fulfilling 100 years have taught her many lessons and she even shared some of her pearls of wisdom during her party. “Exercise, just be yourself and don’t worry about anything,” Norma said when asked how she got to her 100th year. “I think that really rings true for Norma, as she is always saying how she wants everyone to know who she really is,” Costanzo said. With those excellent pieces of advice from Norma, anyone can live a long and fulfilling life. Happy Birthday Norma and wishing you a great day and many more blessings and celebrations to come!
