A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. Mark Donald, DMD, MAGD. “Dr. Popelka should be commended for his unflagging commitment to continuing education, which allows him to provide the best possible dental care and oral health education to his patients.” Dr. Popelka graduated from University of Rochester in 2005 and currently practices dentistry in Canandaigua. He and his wife, Anna, have 3 children, Giannina, Adriano, and Marcello.

Churchville-Chili Teacher Receives SHAPE America Grant By Amanda Puleo

Churchville Elementary School physical education teacher Brooke Elnicky has been coordinating the school’s Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs since she joined the district nine years ago. The Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) recently recognized her commitment to physical education and contributions to these American Heart Association (AHA) initiatives with their Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart ( JRFH/ HFH) grant awarding her $2,500 designed to support professional development and provide funds to purchase school equipment. Elnicky plans to use the stipend to purchase heart rate monitors which will be easier for her younger students to use. As part of the grant, she will also be attending the SHAPE America National Conference this March in Boston, Massachusetts. “This is really exciting for me,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to get new ideas, to meet the best of the best in my profession, from all over the country. It will be a reinvigorating experience.” In 2016, Churchville Elementary raised a record $18,456 during their Hoops for Heart event – more than any other elementary school in the state. The program promotes physical education and provides children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke. The funds raised go toward cardiovascular disease and stroke research and health education.

Brooke Elnicky has a passion for helping children develop strong character and life-long healthy habits.

“It’s wonderful to see children develop empathy for others through their involvement in this activity,” Elnicky said. “They are learning to help other people while they are having fun and forming healthy habits.” For 2017, there are already plans to hold a variety of school-wide heart health events as part of American Heart Month. The Society of Health and Physical Educators is the nation’s largest membership organization of health and physical education professionals. It is committed to ensuring all children have the opportunity to lead healthy, physically active lives.

Wearing Hand-me-down Gowns

Shop Smart For Vintage Signs

Brides-to-be devote plenty of time to thinking about their wedding gowns, and some women spend months scouring stores for their ideal designs. But what if the perfect gown is already tucked away in a family member’s closet?

Antique shops are one venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors.

Some brides view a hand-medown gown with a degree of skepticism. After all, people may poke fun at dresses passed on by well-meaning friends and family that feature styling that is out-ofdate (think 1980s shoulder pads). However, in most cases, dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique. Wearing a hand-me-down gown is something many brides consider, especially if the dress has sentimental meaning or is a family heirloom.

Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.

A house with any kind of age will have dozens of stories to tell. I suppose if a novelist could live long enough, one could base an entire oeuvre on the lives that weave in and out of an antique house. ~Anita Shreve

T h ank Y ou ! The Family of Bob “Bear” Pullyblank would like to warmly thank everyone for their comforting words and genuine acts of kindness in our time of sadness. The hundreds of sympathy cards, Mass cards, food, flowers and donations to the Dr. Andaloro Scholarship Fund helped give us some comfort during this difficult time. Special thanks to Dr. Lori Ferris, her staff and the staff at Avon Nursing Home for giving Bob such loving care. Thank you to the Alhart Funeral Home, St. Columba Church, Caledonia Fire Dept., Michelle Carson, and The Village Florist. FOREVER REMEMBERED Creating Timeless Memories

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.

Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty

CELEBRATING A LIFE Memorial services have become increasingly popular, especially among those whose loved ones have been cremated and whose remains have already been disposed of. A memorial service is an option when all family members and friends of the deceased are not able to make it in time to attend the burial. In such cases, it is possible to have a timely funeral, and a memorial service may be scheduled at a later date when more people are able to attend. A memorial service may be planned when a large gathering of people is expected that would not fit into the confines of the burial site. In that case, a memorial service can be conducted in a restaurant, hall, or other event space. Should family and loved ones be scattered, it may be appropriate to consider a memorial service held at a later date when everyone is able to gather together. At KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, our caring staff will assist you in planning the service. We have a wide variety of commemorative options from which to choose. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our tastefully appointed facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Bernard A. Fischer “Bernie” “Pops” February 25, 2017 Conesus Lake: February 25, 2017 at age 77 years. Predeceased by his parents Bernard & Orlina Fischer and his wife, Marie Fischer. Survived by his sons; Bernard “Bud” Fischer of Conesus, Mark Fischer of Ohio, and Glenn (Lesley) Fischer of Ohio. Grandchildren; Tom Donovan, Mike Donovan, Donna Marie Fischer, Donnie Fischer, Richie Fischer, Amanda Fischer, Marquelle Fischer, Drew Fischer, Cadi Fischer, and Ben Fischer. Great-granddaughter Cory Donovan. Also survived by his sister Joyce Larson of Geneseo, many other loving family and friends. It’s difficult to reduce 77 years of life to a few words. His roots were deep and relationships were long. He had one wife, Marie. He had one employer, Xerox. He had one house that he built on Conesus Lake. He didn’t embrace change but at the same time seemed to fill his life with enough variety to keep it interesting. His interest included Fishing, Hunting, NASCAR (Jeff Gordon), the weather, Buffalo Sabres, New York Yankees, and he suffered with much of Ohio as a diehard Cleveland Browns fan. However, all of those interests took a back seat to anything that his grandchildren were involved in. There was an unmistakable tone of joy within his voice and laugh when he was relaying stories of something one of the grandkids had done. Through the lives of his grandchildren, he experienced athletic success, enjoyed the chemistry and unique bond that comes with identical twins, academic success, military service, and countless other triumphs. “Pops” was a good friend to many and every one of his friends has a memory full of laughs or funny stories. He knew what was right but never forced his way of thinking on others. Friends may call on Saturday, March 4th, from 3-4pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY where a service will follow calling at 4pm. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of a Memorial Contribution, take your family or a friend out to dinner and enjoy each other’s company. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

CROSSWORD

“A child educated only at school is an uneducated child...” ~ George Santayana It seems likely that professional educators subscribe without reservation to Santayana’s “thought.” Some parents seem to feel that the public schools are fully responsible for the education of their children, and they feel absolutely no responsibility for assisting. Indeed, the “support” from such homes may be negative. The schools have a child for a few hours each day. It is in the home where children learn some of the most important lessons. The parents who truly love their children will do all they can to supplement the school’s efforts, especially in the examples they set. We recognize the need of some families for a minimum services at minimum cost. We offer immediate disposition when such service best meets a family’s needs.

• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) W hen a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A w orking smoke ala rm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than tw enty percent of American homes are w ithout them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. The peak time for home fire fatalities is betw een 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., w hen most families are asleep. Bedrooms Do not trap electrical cords against w alls. Heat can build up, posing a fire hazard. Use only lab-a pproved electric blankets and w armers. M ake sure cords are not w orn or coming apart. Do not leave electric blankets sw itched on all night unless they are marked “ suitable for all night use.” Keep bedding, curtains and other combustible items at least three feet aw ay from space heaters. Never smo ke in bed. Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal M attress Flammability Standard. By law, mattresses made since then are required to be s afer. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. . CLIP-N-SAVE

Add Little Touches - An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles.

How does w ind energy w ork ? The blades on a w ind turbine act like an airplane w ing. W hen the w ind blow s, low -pressure air forms on the dow nw ind side of the blade. This low pressure pocket pulls the blade tow ard it, causing the rotor to turn, called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the w ind’s force against the front side of the blade, w hich is called drag. As the rotor continues to spin, it also s pins a generator to produce electricity. Turbines may be connected to a pow er grid to pow er larger areas or be stand-alone units for personal use. M any elect ricity providers have contracted w ith w ind plants to offer w ind-pow ered electricity to customers. How t o soundproof your hom e

To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and w indow s. Take a quick w alk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate w hich ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room w here volumes w ill be blasting on TV’s and stereos. W ith this information, you should have a good idea of w here you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet: Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help w ith the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow dow n the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home. Insulate your w alls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors w on’t just drive aw ay excess noise, it w ill also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and c old months. For the best sound proofing and easy installation quality. Seal up all cracks and holes around w indow s and doors, and add double glazed w indow s to your current glass panes. Once you’ve selected the best soundproofing method, implement it and enjoy the bliss of silence throughout your home.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On March 17, 461 A.D., Saint Patrick -- Christian missionary, bishop and apostle of Ireland -- dies in Ireland. Much of what is known about his legendary life comes from the “Confessio,” a book he wrote during his final years. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held not in Ireland, but in New York City in 1762.

4 FOODS THAT CAN BOOST ENERGY LEVELS Diet can go a long way toward increasing or lowering energy levels. No one wants to consume foods that will make it harder for them to get through the day, so the following are a handful of foods that pack an energetic punch. 1. Cashews: Cashews, which are high in magnesium, help to convert sugar into energy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to low energy levels, so nuts that are high in magnesium, including cashews, can provide that mid-afternoon jolt that some people are seeking. Cashews are high in calories, so it’s best for those looking to lose weight or maintain healthy weights to adhere to serving suggestion guidelines. 2. Skinless chicken: A study from researcher Judith Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Clinical Research Center found that alertness tends to increase when the brain produces the neurotransmitter dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine. Skinless chicken contains an amino acid known as tyrosine that helps in the production of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If skinless chicken is not available, other foods that may provide this same effect include fish, lean beef and eggs. In addition, lean meats like skinless chicken contain enough vitamin B to help ease insomnia. 3. Salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids can help the body fight inflammation, which has been linked to a host of ailments, including chronic fatigue. Salmon is also high in protein, which can eliminate the mid- to late-afternoon hunger pangs that can derail healthy diets and contribute to weight gain. 4. Beans: Beans are loaded with fiber, and that’s a good thing for energy levels. Like magnesium, which can also be found in beans, fiber takes awhile to digest, extending the energyboosting properties of foods loaded with fiber. In spite of the growing movement to eat and live healthier, many adults still do not include enough fiber in their diets. Men and women can consult with their physicians to determine how to make that happen, but eating more beans is a good start.

FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 2017

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Back Surgery Comes With No Guarantees DEAR DR. ROACH: An MRI showed that I have severe stenosis of my C6 vertebrae. I have pins-and-needles sensations that often go down my right arm and in the neck area of my left shoulder. I saw an orthopedic surgeon, who stated that he could “cure” my stenosis with a laminectomy surgery. Based on his recommendation, I have completed a six-day pack of prednisone and four weeks of physical therapy, with little diminishment of my symptoms. I am now taking Celebrex daily. I have spent hours going through the various medical journals online, but could not locate any journal article that summarizes the prognosis of this surgery. Do you know of any research that discusses the post-surgery results, including the degree to which symptoms are reduced and what percent of patients require further surgical interventions? It would be informative to know if there are any other options if PT has provided little benefit. -- J.N.U. ANSWER: As physicians, we like to practice evidence-based medicine, but the sad fact is that evidence to help guide us often is lacking, so we are left with our own education, training and clinical experience to make those decisions. In this situation, we have a few studies to help us. The most-cited one, an analysis of two randomized, controlled trials, showed a faster improvement from surgery, but no difference in symptoms one or three years after surgery in the operation group, compared with the medication and physical therapy group. Several morerecent observational trials have shown significant improvement in pain and movement after surgery. The real problem is that a population doesn’t go to see a doctor about neck pain -- an individual does, and studies that examine population outcomes can’t give precise information about outcomes. Further, these studies don’t even apply to some people. For example, progressive weakness is a clear indication for surgery, and people with that complaint wouldn’t be considered for the trials. You still require an experienced surgeon to give you the best information he or she can about your condition. It stands to reason that the more severe the pain and restrictions on activity, the more likely surgery is to help. Back surgery really should be contemplated only by people with moderate to severe symptoms, and those who recognize that, despite the best care, sometimes surgery does not help and, rarely, can make things worse. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of a number of different things to help acid reflux. Does raising the head of your bed fit into that category, and if so, by how much? -- T.E.D. ANSWER: Yes, raising the head of the bed can reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The traditional method is a brick or two under the head of the bed, but a wedge-shaped pillow works too. Using lots of regular pillows usually does not. When we sleep, any acid that gets passed backward (refluxed) from the stomach into the esophagus stays there for a long time, since neither gravity nor the swallow reflex helps it down. With the head elevated, there is some gravity acting against reflux and getting it back into the stomach. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

DID YOU KNOW? While parents often struggle to get their children to put down their devices and/or turn off the television, an unscientific 2014 study from researchers at Boston University Medical Center discovered that parents might just be the ones who need to step away from their smartphones. Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental pediatrician, and two fellow researchers observed 55 separate groups of caregivers, oftentimes parents, and young children dining at restaurants around Boston. Of the 55 caregivers under observation, 40 used mobile devices during the meal and 16 used such devices throughout the meal. In addition, Radesky and her fellow researchers noticed that children whose caregivers were most absorbed in their devices were more likely to act out.

My vacuum died right in the middle of cleaning up after putting up holiday decorations out MidDecember. What a mess, tinsel in the carpet, evergreen pieces, in addition to your normal weekly vacuuming. And what a bad time of year with all those extra expenses during the holiday season. I took my vacuum into a Fairport Vacuum store and dropped it off. I let them know that I couldn’t afford to pick it up till after Christmas because of holiday expenses. They offered me a vacuum loaner (nice customer service). When I did pick up my vacuum later, I realized that the store had also replaced my extension cord at no cost to me and my vacuum ran better that it had in years. It’s was a pleasant surprise to get service nowadays that goes above and beyond expectations. Thank you!

On December 24 our 11 yr. old dog got out without us realizing it. He got frightened and took off and for 19 days was lost. We put up posters, and went door to door hoping someone had seen him, but no luck. Everyone in town knew Scampy was lost and many prayed for his safe return. We had lost hope but on day 19 we got a call that he had been spotted. Our grateful thanks to Patty in West Bloomfield for looking at his face on the posters, and caring enough to stop and call us, and then stomped through the fields and finally got to him. I am sure he would not have lasted much longer. Thanks to everyone who wished for his return, and was on the lookout for him, and especially to Cindy B. and Stephanie T. for their hours of searching, and most of all to Patty for bringing our boy home to us. Every day I drive down Chili Ave. past St. Pius X and I am always inspired by the messages displayed out front. Thank you so much to whoever does this, and yes, I truly missed them when you took a little vacation this past summer.

The staff, at our local hospital, park in the front of the hospital! I had to take my husband in for surgery and had a hard time finding a spot to park. But then I see people in scrubs and dress clothes with their badges parking and walking in the front door. I inquired when I was inside and was told that employees were to be parking at nearby Street and a (FREE) bus would bring them over. And just to inconvenience many of us a little more, the parking in the back is not much better, as employees are doing the same thing. I had to park way out to get to my designated office. It is truly horrible to hear about elder abuse. I have seen the ads on TV. It is not anything I could ever imagine happening. My parents needed my help and that is exactly what I did. I gave up my job to take care of them full time. There was no question in my mind that that was what I was going to do. I did it alone for twelve years.

But what about caregiver abuse? I have been slapped across the face, punched, mentally abused. I understand it is a sickness and they could not help themselves. But it changed me. It made me a very unhappy person. I have been in therapy for over a year. It has helped some, but I have a long way to go. There needs to be more attention brought to this subject. Caregiver abuse does happen. I lived it. I know. Working on becoming me again We have always been taught to have faith in our justice system. That judges will listen to all the facts and findings before making important decisions. What has happened to our county family court where professional opinions do not matter (lawyers, child protective services, councilors, etc.) Even the judges themselves who previously put a court order in place then fail to uphold their order when a violation is found! How can we have faith in our judicial system when our children’s safety and wellbeing are not a consideration in the judgements made…? It is time for a change!

Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

Are you thinking about volunteering, but aren’t quite sure where you’d be needed?

Make vacations and travel a key component of retirement When the time comes to bid farewell to conference calls, meetings and daily commutes, retirees have open schedules to fill with whichever activities they choose. Travel is one exciting way to pass the time. Traveling can be a rewarding prospect for active seniors, particularly those who successfully preplanned for retirement and have the income to fund various excursions. Many seniors, both in the United States and Canada, find that travel tops their to-do lists once they retire. According to Senior Travel magazine, new travel options are emerging for newly minted retirees looking for something a little different from the status quo. The list of destinations retirees have at their disposal is limitless. The following ideas are some of the more popular ways retirees choose to travel. · Road trips rule. Taking to the highways and byways is an excellent way to see the country. Seniors can customize their routes depending on which places they want to visit. RV travel can be as comfortable or as rustic as travelers prefer. Many seniors spend months traveling in their campers, which offer many of the same amenities of home. Campsites and special RV hook-up sites offer the other necessities of traveling the open road. · Genealogical tourism is popular. People hoping to trace their ancestry and visit their ancestral homelands are one of the fastestgrowing travel segments. Visiting an old church in Europe where ancestors were married or buying food from a market in which a great aunt or uncle once worked leads retirees on many international adventures. Such trips provide travelers with a unique opportunity to understand their roots up close and personal while enjoying some international travel along the way. · Exotic tours can be exciting destinations. History buffs or

adventure-seeking couples may be particularly attracted to exotic travel destinations that are slightly off the beaten path. Travel tours may take vacationers to destinations such as excavation sites or backpacking through the rainforest. With passport in hand, seniors can go just about anywhere their desires take them. · Enjoy a relaxing seaside trip. A seaside vacation can be the perfect trip for seniors who want to put their feet up and sip some cocktails while watching the waves lap the shores. Many beach resorts offer all-inclusive packages for different age groups. Meals, excursions and hotel rooms can be bundled into one affordable, confusion-free price. · Go cruising. Speaking of all-inclusive vacationing, cruising seems tailor-made for those ages 50 and older because it offers the convenience of accommodations, food, entertainment, and transportation all in one. The various activities offered on the ship mean travelers can find ways to spend their time how they see fit. Cruising couples can opt to spend all of their time on the ship enjoying carefully prepared meals and entertainment or disembark and explore the various ports of call along the way. Now that they have more free time, retirees can gear up for travel adventures to remember.
