A National Award is Earned by Dr. Sandro R. Popelka DDS, MPH, MAGD The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is pleased to announce that Sandro R. Popelka, DDS, MPH, MAGD, of Canandaigua, NY, received the association’s Mastership Award during the AGD 2016 annual meeting, which took place July 14 to 17 in Boston, MA. The Mastership Award is the AGD’s highest honor and one of the most respected designations within the profession. To earn this award, Dr. Popelka completed 1,100 hours of dental continuing education. As a Mastership Award recipient, Dr. Popelka joins more than 2,300 active AGD Masters who have gone above and beyond the basic requirements to care for their patient’s oral health. “This award requires an extraordinary amount of time and effort,” says AGD Immediate Past President W. I would like to congratulate law enforcement in Geneseo, N.Y. on 3/23/17 for doing their job. All members of law enforcement have taken an oath to protect and serve. The officer made a simple traffic stop for speeding. If a person decides to disobey the law and speed, they might get caught. Once the officer realized this was more than a simple traffic violation, he called for more qualified people to sort out the situation. A medic can determine that an injury is beyond his expertise, so he notifies a doctor that a person needs help that he is not able to provide. As far as the people involved in this incident being mistreated because they are in this county illegally, I do not believe that to be true. We are a county of laws and people should abide by them. If a business wishes to employ temporary or guest workers, then the federal government should develop software and a program available to all law enforcement to identify them. This way things would be safer for the worker, the employer and society. Thank you,

Thinking about dental implants? Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.
Home from College? Need your wisdom teeth out? Wisdom Teeth Extractions, Gum Treatment or Surgery Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is both a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a Periodontist (gum surgeon). He is licensed and certified in the delivery of general and IV anesthesia, making your surgical experience as comfortable as possible. His team has the skills required to provide the quality surgical care you deserve. They also provide IV anesthesia for patients who are anxious about routine dental treatment by their dentist.

Some benefits of growing older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population - persons 65 years or older - numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old. · Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness. · Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in
person ($20 online or via mail). · Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously - something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. · Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging. Pizza Burgers (Family Features) Are your burgers the stuff of neighborhood legend? Do you love dreaming up inventive new recipes? Thanks to pork’s versatility, even the most unconventional toppings make top-notch burgers. Here are three ideas to get the juices flowing: • Play up your family’s favorite flavors: Love the spicy kick of jalapenos or the smoothness of good old fashion yellow mustard? Let your favorite toppings do the talking. • Elevate your sides: Try piling your go-to side dish onto the pork burger in order to create a two-in-one meal. • Think beyond the bun: Just because it’s a burger doesn’t mean it needs a hamburger bun. To ignite your inspiration, fire up the grill and tease your taste buds with this scrumptious pizza burger recipe featuring new Johnsonville Italian Sausage Patties. Pizza Burgers - They’ve been deep-dished, thin-crusted, pocketed, and rolled-now try Johnsonville’s take on an iconic dish. Ingredients • 1 package (32 ounces) frozen Johnsonville(r) Italian Sausage Patties (package of 6 patties found in Walmart’s frozen burger section) • 6 slices provolone cheese • 6 ciabatta rolls, split • 1/4 cup olive oil • 6 tablespoons pizza sauce • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil 1. Grill patties according to package directions. Top with provolone cheese; grill 1-2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Brush rolls with oil; grill until lightly browned. Serve burgers on rolls with pizza sauce and basil.

Helen E. France (Weaver)
FOREVER REMEMBERED
March 24, 2017 Geneseo/Livonia: Passed peacefully at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home on March 24, 2017 at age 91 years. Predeceased by her husband George E. France; her sons, David, William, & Daniel Ace, and her daughter Barbara Fischer; siblings; James Weaver, Gert Burger, and Charles Weaver. Survived by her children; Robert Ace of FL, Thomas Ace of FL, Beverly (Ronald) Pollock of Pittsford, Donald Ace, and Michael France both of Geneseo. Grandchildren; Jeffrey, Lori, Christopher (Lisa), Michelle, Tammy, Yvonne (Leon), Dale, Adam, Carrie, David, Donald; siblings; Katherine Arilotta of NC and Emil Weaver of HI. Also survived by several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces & nephews, and dear friends. Helen lived her entire life in the Avon, Geneseo, and Lakeville areas. She was a devoted and loving mother of 9 children. Most of her time was spent in service to others at a restaurant in Lima, that she owned with her husband George. When she was not busy at the restaurant, Helen enjoyed playing bingo, cards and board games, traveling, and sharing a laugh or a story with family and friends. She always looked for the good in others, and had a positive outlook on life, no matter what life may have brought her way. She was an inspiration for others to share those same qualities. A graveside service will be held in the future at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneseo, NY at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to Hearthside Cats, PO Box 282, Geneseo, NY 14454. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com

“The follish person seeks happiness in the distance; the wise person grows it under his feet.....” ~ James Oppenheim
It takes a certain amount of maturity and wisdom to realize that the grass is NOT always greener in the other fellow’s yard, even though young men have traditionally gone to distant places to seek their fortune. It is easy to deplore the lack of opportunity near to home. We know the situation here and we see no easy way to fame and fortune, so we may look to faraway places. The wisest among us looks for, and often finds, whatever he wants… including happiness… at home, right under his feet.
Our family would like to express or heartfelt gratitude to the first responders for their kindness, professionalism and their diligence in helping our father. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
We are always available to help, whether with pre-need planning or at the time of need. You can depend on us for the kind of help and advice you would expect from a trusted friend.
Friends called on Monday, March 27th, from 5-7pm at the Faith Fellowship Church, 5630 Pebble Beach Road, Lakeville, NY 14480, where a Memorial Service followed calling hours at 7pm. Burial was held at Bath National Cemetery, on Tuesday, March 28th, at 11am with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #20, PO Box 12580, Rochester, NY 14612 or to the Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487.

CROSSWORD

GARDEN CEMETERIES Today’s cemeteries owe a great deal to the “garden cemeteries” that were planned in the outlying suburbs of London during the mid-19th century. These eternal resting places featured walled-off fields, catacombs, chapels, and planted trees. As exclusive resting places, they not only provided areas of interment for the dead, but they were also places of instruction for the living. They provoked a mood of quiet contemplation and respect. Within their walls, Victorians could wander and ponder the hereafter. These fashionable cemeteries soon blossomed around every major British city and were considered one of the great successes of their age. Parliament ordered the building of seven new “great gardens of sleep,” which are now referred to as the “Magnificent Seven.” KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME hopes you found this topic to be both informative and interesting. Our caring staff will provide you with a wide range of commemorative options to appeal to your taste and to meet your budget. We are here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (585) 346-5401. You are invited to tour our conveniently located facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. We have been serving our communities with pride for many years. QUOTE: “The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.” ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

Thank you to a wonderful lady, Connie, and Livonia ambulance crew. I fell and broke my leg while walking my dog. I was sitting in the snow and trying to wave someone down for help, luckily my guardian angel, Connie, came along and called for ambulance, and my friend, to get the dog. A lot of cars had passed; one fellow even waved and tooted his horn! Anyway just wanted to say a BIG thank you to you all and let you know I am continuing to heal. I broke both bones in my leg, so it is a long process, but doing fine! Bless you all! I would like to thank the person who turned in my lost cell phone to the Sheriff’s department, that I lost it in September of last year, while moving my children to their new home. It was powered up and is still in working condition, even though it went through the winter elements. I wish that I knew who you were to
thank you in person, and where it was found. Thank you again. We want to say thanks for a job well done to Norm & Danielle of Norm’s Handyman Service. They gave us a bathroom redo which put our old bathroom to shame. They came to our home & treated us with respect. Their work was stellar. We have already recommended them to our friends. We will be contacting them again for other repairs. Sincerely, MaryLou & Tony I am a Senior Citizen and I want to thank the kind person who found my purse, which I had inadvertently left in the shopping cart on March 1st in Wegmans on Calkins Rd., in Henrietta. You turned it in to the Customer Service Dept. intact. I wish you had left your name etc. so that I could have thanked you personally. Your honestly is sincerely appreciated. J.A. What a wonderful surprise I got when I went to the window to pay for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts in Avon on Friday, March 17th. Thank you so much to the young women in front of me who paid for my beverages! What a wonderful way to start my Friday! I will pay it forward!
At a minimum, schools should let leagues know so we are prepared to pay admission in advance to watch our kids play basketball. Yes, it’s crazy as it sounds.
When a dog comes up to you unaggressive and wagging his tail, there’s no reason to dramatically accuse him of “coming after you” just because of his breed. He could easily attack you in seconds but doesn’t because he’s a sweet dog, so don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. Honestly, it’s disappointing to go to schools and have them charge admission to parents to watch their kids basketball games. All 3 of our kids are in sports and recently we were charged admission at 2 local schools. There is no advance notice on the league website or any type of communication to let parents know that there would be admission costs. The process is not consistent across all schools and for all we know the money collected may not even get transitioned to the school. There are numerous other fun and creative ways that schools can raise money.
Like everyone in this country I’m entitled to my opinion which sometimes comes with criticism. Unlike you I don’t care who you voted for, but if I had to guess you probably didn’t vote. The person I voted for won; if he would have lost my signs would have been removed the day after the election but my plan was to keep them up until after the inauguration. If the signs bothered you so much why didn’t you knock on my door and I would have explained. But you chose to do what a lot of people do, hide. There is no discussion or dialog between people anymore and is why some people believe this country is in trouble. Why is it that a developer who wants to build a supermarket and plaza near a congested intersection, blaming a supermarket 1/2 mile down the road? The town is not really for it, nor are the residents in the area. Adding a traffic light will only add more congestion from the entrances and exits. Poor choice of location, move on.

Shop Smart For Vintage Signs Antique shops are one venue for antique signs and coordinating pieces. Some sellers specialize in vintage signage. Antique stores are popular in many tourist towns and major cities, where more artistic neighborhoods tend to include one or more antique shops. If a particular antique store does not have what you are looking for, they may be able to secure certain pieces you desire from other vendors. Shoppers looking for antique signs also can purchase reproductions. There are many retailers that produce very good likenesses that may be considerably more affordable than the originals. You also can commission an artist to reproduce signage that fits with your design plans. Some research online or a query of artists in your community may yield prospects who can produce the sign you covet.

Clean Closets M ake a Happy Home (Family Features) W hen it comes to getting the house clean and tidy, closets often get left off the to-do list. From hall closets and linen closets to bedroom closets, “ out of sight, out of mind” thinking quickly leads to clutter - and then frustration w hen you can’t find w hat you need w hen you need it. Start by sorting. If you haven’t w orn a piece of clothing in the past year - or you can’t remember the last time you w ore something - then you don’t need it. Sort your remaining clothes by season and then into piles to keep or pass dow n. If you have limited closet space, keep only the current season’s w ardrobe in your closet. Carefully pack and store the rest for later. Linen closets stay more organized w hen you stack similar sized items together. Sort sheets by size, and group w ashcloths, hand tow els and bath tow els together. For closets that hold everything from the vacuum cleaner to art supplies and anything in betw een, w ork one shelf at a time. Sort items by cate gories and dedicate one shelf or area of the closet to each group.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 89 years old and just learned that I have the first stages of bed sores on my buttocks. My dermatologist said that I should stay off of it as much as possible and apply hydrocortisone cream. I have COPD, and I need to sleep sitting up. I wonder if you have any other suggestions to help my pain and discomfort. -A.A. ANSWER: Bed sores (also called pressure ulcers) are potentially serious problems that require immediate attention. We “stage” bed sores into four categories. Hopefully you have stage one, where there is skin redness, usually over a bony prominence such as the sacrum, the hand-shaped bone at the base of the spine. A stage two bed sore may be a shallow, open ulcer or a blister. At stage three there is full-thickness loss of the skin, while a stage four has exposed muscle or bone. Sometimes, it is impossible to stage ulcers from their appearance alone. A stage one bed sore often is treated with a clear film for protection. Hydrocortisone cream is surprising to me, since steroids can thin the skin when used excessively, which you certainly don’t want to do. The pain should be treated, but you should be taking this as your body’s warning that there is a problem. The key to preventing further injury is to find a way to take pressure off the area. Sleeping sitting up puts all your weight on your lower back, buttocks and thighs, which in turn puts these areas at a high risk for pressure ulcers. There are several ways to combat this, including different kinds of mattresses and pads, and even a device that adjusts automatically to pressure. Changing positions frequently (every two hours or less) is critical if you are not using a special mattress or pad. There are wound-management specialists, both nurses and doctors, with expertise for your particular situation. I would ask your doctor about finding and consulting with one. People with COPD are at high risk for poor nutrition, and making sure you are getting adequate protein and calories is critical, as poor nutrition is a big risk for serious bed sores. I strongly recommend a visit with a nutritionist. Also, perhaps your COPD treatment could be optimized to make it easier to sleep in a supine (lying-down) position. This means a revisit with your regular doctor or the consultant doctor who is treating your COPD. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing to you regarding your recent column about psoriasis. My husband spent most of his life suffering from severe psoriasis, until he was told of an all-natural solution: cilantro. In a matter of a few months he was completely symptom-free, and remains so after more than a year. He simply adds a few sprigs of cilantro to a garden salad once a day. -- J.L. ANSWER: I also have read that eating fresh cilantro helps psoriasis. I couldn’t find any study that looked at this, and people responding to online support groups reported mixed results. However, it is very safe and might be worth a try. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 6 Fresh New Ways To Enjoy Potatoes (BPT) - Potatoes are the vegetable that take breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to the next level of yum. They are quick to disappear but also quick and easy to buy, prepare and serve. Not only are potatoes uber satisfying, but research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition also shows that when prepared healthfully, they can be a part of a weight loss program-just call them the 9th Wonder of the World. If you’re looking for flavorful and nutritious dishes that can be part of your weight management plan, then look no further. Here’s a little inspiration for potato dishes sure to become favorites: DIY potato chips: This is a super easy and delicious recipe. Boil a russet potato and a few purple potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, dry and cut into thin slices. Toss the freshly cut slices in one beaten egg white. Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray and evenly space the chips throughout the pan. Bake slices at 400ºF for 35 minutes, turning halfway through. Top chips with sea salt. Season with new flavor favorites: Spice up your baked or roasted potatoes with healthy toppings that really raise the bar on nutrition and flavor. Start with a plain, thick and creamy yogurt and a good source of protein. If you’re serious about spice, try adding a tablespoon of Sriracha and orange juice to a halfcup of your yogurt, mix, and add a dollop to your potatoes. Love a Mediterranean flair? Top your taters with Greek yogurt mixed with lemon, garlic, roasted red peppers and oregano. Wholesome mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes with a low-fat spread, Greek yogurt or skim milk for that creamy, delicious texture you love, without all the calories. Slim-belly baked potato bar: Families will love a baked potato bar. Top a baked potato with ground turkey, salsa and light sour cream for taco night, or top your potatoes with tomato sauce, turkey pepperoni, Italian blend shredded cheese and other veggies for a pizza-style delight. One medium-sized skin-on potato has just 110 calories and contains 45 percent of your daily value of vitamin C. On its own, a potato contains no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol and has more potassium than a banana. Healthy eating is so much better with foods you love and new ways to enjoy them. The Lakeridge Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Western New York celebrated World Thinking Day on February 12th. World Thinking Day, formerly Thinking Day, is celebrated annually by both Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. It is a day when they think about their “sisters” in all countries of the world. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts selects an important international issue as the theme for each year’s World Thinking Day. The theme chosen for 2017 was “Grow.” Girl Scouts and Girl Guides use the day as an opportunity to study and appreciate
other countries and cultures and equally increase awareness and sensitivity on global concerns as it relates to the theme. During World Thinking Day, the Lakeridge Girl Scouts traveled the world by visiting different booths to learn about the theme of growing throughout the countries. At these booths, the girls learned about the culture, food, and the resources of each country. They also worked on crafts such as making magic wands, bracelets and tattoos. To find out more about the programs offered by the Girl Scouts, please visit their website http://www.girlscouts.org/

303-2970 HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. And rather than mailing contracts to prospective clients, email contracts that accept e-signatures, ultimately storing the contracts on your file server rather than in a dusty old filing cabinet.

Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

Anything less than a week will seem too lastminute and might give clients the impression, whether true or false, that a host and his company are disorganized and sloppy. When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance.
Learn How to Set a Goal (NewsUSA) - To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.” Setting a goal, whether it be to lose weight, earn a promotion or spend more time with your family, is easy -- it’s carrying through that proves problematic. And yet, the world’s most successful people are intensely goal-orientated. They know what they want, and they focus on achieving it every day. So what’s the difference between a top executive and everybody else? “The fact is that successful people fail far more than unsuccessful people,” says Brian Tracy, a top management consultant, in a recent Q&A with SUCCESS Magazine. “Successful people try more things, fall down, pick themselves up and try again -over and over before they finally win.” So how can you learn to quit giving up on your goals? SUCCESS Magazine offers the following tips for more successful goal-setting: - Write down a list of goals. Cynthia Kersey, author of “Unstoppable: 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You,” suggests focusing on how you want to be remembered. “List the qualities, deeds and characteristics for which you would like to be remembered by your friends, spouse, children, co-workers, the community and even the world.” - Set out a plan to accomplish your goals. Tracy suggests listing what little steps will take you to your goal, then organizing them by priority and sequence. Figure out how much time and money you will need to accomplish your goals, and revisit and revise your plan accordingly.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
