H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor new romances for unpaired Ewes and Rams. Alreadypaired Arian twosomes experience renewed harmony in their relationships. Money matters also take a bright turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Use that strong Bovine determination to help you keep the faith with your convictions while you move through a period of uncertainty. Things begin to ease by the week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to your intuition. It could be alerting you to be more careful about accepting a “statement of fact” simply on trust. Don’t be shy about asking for more proof. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Concern for the well-being of someone in need is admirable. But don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Ask a family member, close friend or colleague to help you. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) It’s OK to focus on the demands of your career. But try to avoid misunderstandings by also reaching out to family and friends. Your sharp intuitive sense kicks in by midweek. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Keep a rein on that green-eyed monster. Jealousy is counterproductive. Instead of resenting a colleague’s good points, concentrate on developing your own abilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Spending time on a creative project during this high-energy week can pay off both in emotional satisfaction and in impressing someone who is glad to see this side of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Now is a good time to start planning that trip you’ve put off because of the demands on your time. Be sure to choose a destination that is new and exciting. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) That upbeat mood in the first part of the week makes you eager to take on new ventures. A more serious note sets in later to help you assess an upcoming decision. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A high energy level gives the Goat the get-up-and-go to finish outstanding tasks before deadline, leaving time for well-earned fun and games with friends and family. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Dealing with disappointment is never easy. But the wise Aquarian will use it as a vital lesson and be the better for it. A close friend has something important to say. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Best bet is not to get involved in an argument between colleagues until you know more about who started it and why. And even then, appearances could be deceiving. Be alert. BORN THIS WEEK: You have creative gifts that inspire those who get to see this sometimes-hidden side of you. LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

WOOD STAINING TIPS
Don't Miss This Once A Year Event!
Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old female. I had a leftbreast lumpectomy (with some lymph nodes removed) about 15 years ago, leaving me with a much heavier right breast. I don’t know whether this plays an important role with my problem. Since the surgery, I have had a problem controlling underarm odor. I do not use any aluminum-based products. I have tried vinegar, milk of magnesia and a deodorant made from milk of magnesia. Within a matter of just a few hours, I notice quite an odor, particularly in my right armpit, which gets worse as the day goes on. I do not perspire profusely, but do develop some underarm moisture. Can you think of any reason this is happening, or any remedy that might work for me? I would appreciate your comments. -- D.M.M. ANSWER: I would start by trying a non-antiperspirant deodorant. These are not aluminum-based and work well for most people. If the deodorant doesn’t work, you should consider another oldfashioned remedy that you haven’t tried: baking soda. It changes the pH of the armpit and helps to keep it dry, and both of those things help get rid of odor. Underarm odor is caused by bacteria that live on our skin; the sweat itself is odorless. Thus, if you get rid of the bacteria, you can get rid of the odor. I have prescribed topical antibiotics on occasion. Some people have told me that an alcohol-based handsanitizing gel helps. It might be that it dries out the skin and also kills bacteria. I would be cautious about overusing this as a solution. The underarm is a sensitive area that can get irritated. I’d be happy to hear from readers about other solutions for this common problem, and I will report back on the most successful methods. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe halitosis. I have had my sinuses, teeth and gums checked to see if they are the cause of the odor, but the dentist and ENT found nothing. I was referred by my primary doctor to a G.I. specialist, who found I had a sliding hiatal hernia, which was causing acid reflux. He recommended surgery to push the stomach back into its normal position below the diaphragm. I decided to pass on the surgery. He recommended taking over-the-counter medications such as Nexium, but after several days my lower back started to hurt, so I stopped taking them. I am reconsidering the surgery and was wondering if this is a good idea. Is it possible that the hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis? -- E.H. ANSWER: Experts believe that 90 percent of the time, halitosis comes from the mouth. What your gastroenterologist is suggesting as the cause of the halitosis is plausible. I found several anecdotal cases where surgery cured the halitosis. However, it’s not only possible that the hiatal hernia has nothing to do with the halitosis, I think it is unlikely that it does. Since surgery would not otherwise be recommended for a sliding hiatal hernia, I can’t recommend surgery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy GUM DISEASE AND STROKES Two recent studies found that, although having gum disease significantly raises the risk of stroke, regular dental care may lower that risk. The two studies, which (combined) reviewed the medical records of over 17,000 individuals with gum disease over a period of fifteen years, found periodontal disease to be independently associated with a significantly higher risk of stroke. In light of this sobering finding, it is heartening to note that regular dental exams, cleanings, and treatment were associated with a 23 percent lower risk of stroke. With this in mind, there are very good reasons to see the dentist twice a year and brush and floss teeth at least twice a day at home. Our many years of experience have taught us that prevention is a
key factor in maintaining good oral health as well as overall health. If you are new to the Batavia area and are looking for a family dentist, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL would like to extend a welcome and an invitation to visit our office. We know how difficult it can be to find qualified professionals without reliable references. However, we feel that with our approach and our commitment to excellence, we have something unique to offer at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P.S. U.S. adults between the ages of 50 and 64 experience the highest rates of periodontal disease (11.88 percent).

Veterans Memorial Park Rededication During Bicentennial By: Amanda Dudek In February 1948, the people of Rush mobilized to create a park to honor their fallen heroes.␣␣The town had already purchased property for the park alongside Honeoye Creek. The property was formerly the location of a mill, owned by Roscoe Tomkinson, which had burned down in September 1941. How apropos that up from the ashes of destruction should rise a memorial to the fallen. The people of Rush immediately sprang into action.␣␣The community members themselves asked that they be permitted to give what they could to the cause directly. A letter was sent out regarding the funds needed. A few notable lines from it read, “With the exception of this letter, there will be no follow-up, personal calls, or special soliciting done for your contribution…that you give is more important than how much you give. We know that every citizen of Rush will want to be part of this most worthy cause.” No contribution, no matter how small, was insignificant or unwanted, for a community-created memorial was more important than grandeur. In April 1948, they succeed. ␣ While the park was created in 1948, its iconic millstone wasn’t added until September 1954 when it was excavated from the Honeoye Creek bed by Rush water pipeline constructors. It was yet another 10 years on Thursday, May 28th, 1964, before the park was finally dedicated, and the millstone received its bronze plaque, which reads in part: “VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK In memory of those who served their country in time of war.” At that time, Congressman Horton presented a Capitolflown flag to the town, commenting as others had on the remarkable initiative of the people of Rush. Although five memorial trees were planted in the park throughout the 1970s, it has now been 54 years since commemorative ceremonies have taken place at Rush Veterans Memorial Park. Tragically, wars have come and gone; other heroes have been added to the ranks of the fallen. We cannot let them go unrecognized. Therefore, on Saturday, September 15th, 2018, the Rush Veterans Memorial Park Rededication will take place at 11am with the unveiling of new War Memorial plaques. New interpretive signage has been installed which includes all veterans who have been born in Rush, drafted or enlisted from

Veterans Memorial Park Rush or lived in Rush before or after serving. This will include the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama and the Persian Gulf. Certainly, this is a significant addition, and to Norm Miller, member of the Executive Committee of the Legion Post, this is something we should all remember. “We should never forget to those who died to protect our nation’s freedom,” says Miller. “The park is a small reminder and tribute to their sacrifices on our behalf; a gentle reminder to take time out and reflect on the price of freedom and the rights we can take for granted. This park brings us all together in appreciation of the men and women who left the serenity and security of their homes and families to defend us.” This is also a cause that is close to the heart of Keynote Speaker, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, himself a decorated Army veteran and the former Director of the Veterans Outreach Center. The event is free and open to the public. Luncheon tickets are $10. Come out and honor those who gave everything for their families and for us, the generations to follow. Learn about the causes of adult hearing loss Hearing loss is quite common and can impact people’s lives in profound ways. Although there are some treatments that can improve one’s ability to hear and communicate, many people are interested in learning about the ways they may be able to prevent hearing loss in the first place. Medical experts from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advise that hearing loss can be caused by different factors. Learning about these causes can help individuals make smart decisions at a young age to prevent future hearing loss when possible. In certain circumstances, hearing loss may be unavoidable. In such instances, audiologists, or doctors specializing in hearing, can help. Conductive hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss refers to problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear and its bones, states the Hearing Loss Association of America. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: • Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear in which fluid accumulation can interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles. • Impacted earwax also can cause hearing problems. • Fluid in the middle ear may obstruct hearing. • Otosclerosis, which is a middle ear disease, can make it difficult for the tiny bones in the middle ear to move. Surgery can correct the problem. • Malformation of the outer ear, ear canal or middle ear structure can impact hearing as well. Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss, or SNHL, occurs due to problems of the inner ear. It is often referred to as nerve-related hearing loss. • Aging is a common cause of hearing loss that may not be reversible. Age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis and is marked by muffled or unclear speech. Treatment with assistive hearing devices can help improve hearing. • Trauma to the ear or head may impact hearing. Wearing protective gear during sports or other activities can protect against neurological damage that may cause hearing loss.

By learning about what impacts hearing loss, people can make changes to prevent damage.
• Damage to the inner ear can result from prolonged exposure to loud noises, states the Mayo Clinic. These noises cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea that send sound signals to the brain. When these hairs or nerve cells are damaged or missing, electrical signals aren’t transmitted as efficiently, and hearing loss occurs. Using hearing protection and turning down the volume can help. • Ménière’s disease is an inner ear problem of unknown origins. It usually starts in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Dizziness and ringing of the ear are common, and hearing loss comes and goes. Some loss can become permanent. • Viruses and diseases as well as family history also may play a role in SNHL. In some instances, hearing loss may be the result of a combination of factors. Anyone finding their hearing has become less acute should visit with an audiologist. One resource to visit is www.asha.org/profind. The doctor can then prescribe a treatment plan to help improve hearing.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.
4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.
4,495 $
In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. “People seem to me to be happiest when they are working for nothing and can afford to do so…” ~ Robert S. Lynd
Oh, deer! @ Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Victor, New York Ken Hutton, Farmington, NY
As an American sociologist of considerable note, Lynd spoke with the authority of experience. He observed that when people are engaged in volunteer work, they are usually doing what they enjoy best. Most people work for nothing because they truly enjoy the work for which they volunteer. Although this may seem to apply mainly to retired persons, most of us could afford to volunteer a few hours to projects where our help is greatly needed. Our reward would be rich…Happiness! The rewards of pre-planning one’s own funeral service are peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing your desires will be carried out. Let us provide further details to answer your questions, without obligation.

Chet Fery, "The Bread Man" came to St. Mary's in Honeoye to share his bread-time stories, humor, and fresh home baked bread for everyone's pleasure. And the wonderful parishioners of St. Mary's provided a delicious breakfast for participants. What a delightful morning! The message of the Breadman is that the world needs, now more than ever, acts and words of kindness. Thank you Chet Fery and the parishioners of St. Mary's for your kindness and for demonstrating that an act and a word of kindness feeds and inspires another.
Thank you to the volunteers and all who participated in this year's Clarkson Good Neighbor Days. We are very lucky to live in such a caring community!

To The Non-All Star Baseball Parent: A Couple of Points - 1. Stop Always Complaining and Stand Up To The Plate and Be A Coach some time. 2. There are no perfect teams, and life, unfortunately, will never be fair, but a team is a family. Maybe it is your negative complaining attitude that prevented your child from making the team. Coaches do not get paid, and put a lot of dedication into their teams. Constant negative parent pressure doesn’t create a family atmosphere. 3. Think about your actions and how they reflect on your children. 4. Wait until they are older, and all have to try out for a team, but then I guess if they still don’t make it, it will again be someone else’s fault.

usg.com/careers BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
